first, before I delve into my list of favorite movies, here's a brief premise of why I set out to make a list like this. I haven't been around MovieForums for too too long so I'd like to divulge a bit of my mindset. First reason I set out to make a list like this-
simply to organize what I've watched and boost to the top the movies that interest me and stand the test of time in my mind.
Secondly, I especially try to find movies I can share with some close friends, my brothers & family, etc. I enjoy finding movies and then sharing certain selections with others, and hearing people's reactions. There are still a lot of movies I haven't seen, and some are likely to be "typical" selections... considering the extensive movie knowledge many possess here. Hopefully there will be a couple that are interesting picks, or several someone hasn't seen and might take a look at and enjoy. So before I lull you to sleep, here's my first selection

#30
the General (1926)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_91h_OwUG-QU/TDofyZ2euAI/AAAAAAAAAUY/lR7mbWxG4Zk/s1600/Annex+-+Keaton,+Buster+%28General,+The%29_01.jpg

I think there's a beauty to the simplicity in this story. Worth watching even if you've never cared to watch a silent movie. Really all Johnnie Gray ever wanted was to get his train back, what he loves most.

My family isn't too adventurous when it comes to movies, but I showed this to them on vacation about a year ago and they liked it. I wasn't really introduced to that many movies as a kid, so that's probably part of why I set out to see what all is out there movie-wise.

Why 30? Most people do 50 or 100. Rebel.

Nice choice for your first pick. I'm not a big fan of the storyline, but the stunts in this movie are really spectacular.

my list would get too arbitrary if I went beyond 30. Hopefully this will also allow me to spend more time contemplating the ones I've enjoyed most, so that I don't get burned out on my list before I get to the top

Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955)

http://images2.static-bluray.com/reviews/6294_25_large.jpg

the middle part in Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy, based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, starring Toshiro Mifune as the Japanese folk-hero Mushashi Miyamoto. it's a bit larger than life, & I found part II to be the most satisfying from the trilogy. It acts as the bridge and transition of Musashi's rise from an unknown ronin, to gaining more widespread respect across the countryside.

found it to be a gratifying taste of Japanese samurai culture, a different culture than my own. played like an engaging exotic folk tale to me

I have seen all three of the Musashi movies, and the second I feel is the best as well. Though I enjoyed all of them. I am a sucker for a good samurai flick, especially with Toshiro Mifune.

Moon (2009)

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/sam_moon_zps5536a950.png

a science fiction story starring Sam Rockwell and his character's solitary mining operation on the moon. Duncan Jones' directorial debut. an absorbing watch late at night when I scan my blu-ray/dvd collection seeking a space flick

Blade Runner (1982)

http://onlyhdwallpapers.com/wallpaper/blade_runner_pyramids_ci_tyrell_pyramid_bladerunner_desktop_1920x1080_hd-wallpaper-752795.jpg http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/blade_r_zps894cdef3.png

this can be a polarizing movie, and I understand why. It has a lot of hype and that often comes with high anticipation. On first watch I was slightly miffed by its following because it does not have the strongest plot in the world. But after repeat viewings, it grew on me. I like it bc it's an example of a visual treat that brings me into its atmosphere. Kind of plays like a strange, vivid dream that maybe doesn't make the best sense in the world.

#26
the Public Enemy (1931)

http://www.movieactors.com/photos-stars/james-cagney-publicenemy06.jpg

James Cagney's breakthrough movie. The controversial grapefruit scene, for its time, put him in the spotlight and the center of the public eye. the scene has Cagney's character smash a grapefruit into his girlfriend's face. It has been noted that many restaurants often used to serve Cagney complimentary grapefruit in acknowledgment of his breakthrough role. He played Tom Powell, a young hoodlum rising through the ranks of the Chicago underworld. As is customary of Cagney Gangster Warner movies, it has a great ending.

the Thief of Bagdad (1924)

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/the-thief-of-baghdad-1924_2_zps75ba00bb.png

Douglas Fairbanks, the original swashbuckler, plays the Thief. the movie is an adaption from One Thousand and One Nights (the Arabian tales). Fairbanks has to be one of the most athletic actors ever and it shows here. loved the Arabian sets.

Captain Blood (1935)

http://i50.tinypic.com/30lm1vk.jpg

the next great swashbuckler after Fairbanks, Errol Flynn stars in his first major performance as Doctor Peter Blood in 1935. I wish there were more good high seas adventure movies like this. Flynn is paired for the first time with romantic counterpart Olivia de Havilland, and I think they have the best romantic chemistry I've ever seen on screen. I've read that they really were mad for each other in real life. Some may see this movie as too dated these days... I guess it's good old-fashioned fun from a different time. If a movie came out just like this nowadays it might be laughed at in some regards... yet I find it charming, proud to put it on my list :D

Modern Times (1936)

http://thefadeout.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/paulette-goddard.jpg?w=620

classic Chaplin as the Tramp tries to survive in a modernized industrial society. I found Paulette Goddard to be fantastic here, a breath of fresh air.

I too should have done a top 30, since them it would have only the top of the top quality movies I watched. Moon and Blade Runner are amazing science fiction movies (specially Blade Runner, but Moon is almost great). Modern Times was not that good, but it has been a long time since I watched it.

Moon is awesome. Another sleeper flick with Sam Rockwell. Its a shame hes not well known by the masses. The Search For One Eyed Jimmy with Rockwell is probably one of best worst movies ever made. He was also amazing in Choke. I have a fetish for anything Rockwell.

Agree about Modern Times. Highly clever, witty and moving socioeconomic commentary. And yes, Paulette Goddard's performance is truly memorable. The cafe scene near the end is one of my favorites of any movie.

the Natural (1984)

http://img2-2.timeinc.net/ew/i/2012/01/01/GLENN-THE-NATURAL_610.jpg

love baseball so much. It was the first thing I loved to do when I was a kid. Ran around in the backyard all day playing baseball with kids in the neighborhood. As for the movie, not only does it have great cinematography, it's got two of my favorite character actors-

the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

http://images4.static-bluray.com/reviews/3989_18.jpg

try and erase all the sequels for a moment. This wasn't meant to be anything more than a standalone movie. I don't hear much about this one anymore, and I think it might be remembered better if not for the forced, cash-grabbing sequels. People often say if it weren't for Johnny Depp this would have been nothing... guess they have a point to an extent. Yet I like Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa in CotBP, he's more evil here than the sequels. This is the movie that made me fall in love with the movies at 16 years old when it came out in theaters in 2003. That seems like much longer than just 10 years ago somehow. I haven't watched this in some time, but for whatever reason, I can put this movie on at any time and it instantly makes me happy. Can't explain it.

sleeper favorite character-

POTC is a great movie. I wouldn't say that it would be nothing without Johnny Depp, but it would have been a very different movie and probably not the phenomenal success that it was had he not been in it. And I agree that Rush was awesome as Barbossa.

Metropolis (1927)

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/metropolis_zpsb78b51cd.png

Metropolis was the first silent movie I saw, about 3 years ago... I watched the "Complete Metropolis" blu-ray with the Gottfried Huppertz score, and it put a serious spell on me. I was expecting to be a little bored or put off by the style of a silent movie, yet only a few minutes in I had forgotten those concerns and found myself completely mesmerized by the story, the music, the characters, it was unlike anything I had seen before. pretty much fell in love with Brigitte Helm... and the movie in general

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/BrigitteHelm_Metropolis_zpsd1a5e5d4.png

"'We shall build a tower that will reach to the stars!' Having conceived Babel, yet unable to build it themselves, they had thousands to build it for them. But those who toiled knew nothing of the dreams of those who planned. And the minds that planned the Tower of Babel cared nothing for the workers who built it. The hymns of praise of the few became the curses of the many - BABEL! BABEL! BABEL! - Between the mind that plans and the hands that build there must be a Mediator, and this must be the heart."

"for over 1,000 years the jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old republic.
before the dark times.
before the empire."

I'd like to talk a little bit now about selective canon. I find I can enjoy certain movies more by deciding to disregard sequels or prequels that come along. the sequels or prequels are often not very well thought out, and can ruin the imagination that came from certain lines from the original movies. i do this for star wars. I also do this for curse of the black pearl compared to its franchise. I can choose to disregard that they resurrected Barbossa, thus undermining the plot of CotBP.

I will find myself using this kind of "selective canon" with the new star wars sequels that will come out in the coming years. the fact is, these are franchises and movie companies will run the stories into the ground... bc they're not concerned with quality, but with maximizing profit. and why shouldn't they be? many would be the same way if you were in the studio's shoes. you'd get no special bonus money for shutting a franchise down at the right time...

if disney makes six, or nine, or however many new star wars movies, my prediction is that maybe one or two of them will be good. and that's fine. i can choose to enjoy the ones i like and disregard the ones i didn't. life is too short to dwell on something that is disappointing.

and if none of the new star wars movies are any good, i can still enjoy the originals and disregard the others.

I don't completeley disagree with this sentiment. I do think there is something to be said for the world building that comes with these franchises however. The Hobbit is a good example of this. The story does have some issues, but I enjoyed it so much because I enjoy Tolkeins world and the creatures in it. Jackson is bringing that to life and that in itself is entertaining to me. I think the same has been done and can continue to be done with Lucas's world.

I agree that that is a good way to look at the prequels for Star Wars. And while I try my best to ignore them, I think the damage has been done. I just need to reconnect with the old movies but I need to get my hands one old versions of the series without the extended edition stuff in them or other **** that was added.

Alien (1979)

username gives away that Ridley Scott's 1979 slasher-haunted-house-movie-in-space was gonna be high up on my list. this completes a long run of sci-fi movies in my top 10.

i like to draw... when I watch this movie my imagination runs wild. when it comes to my top four favorites, they're so close that they're essentially interchangeable.

a Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/sleepkills_zpse5668ac8.png

in hallowed territory now. the perfect movie to put on late at night when it's dark outside and you're all alone. Wes Craven's classic dark fantasy. i love the Charles Bernstein score... it's so 80's. I'd be fine with it if some movies still used scores like these. I much prefer this kind of soundtrack to the pointlessly "epic" sounding ones

Classic horror movie with by far the most fun of the horror movie villains!

thought i had seen the best, most classic horror movie when I saw Halloween '78... & then a Nightmare on Elm Street '84 topped it (to me)

For a Few Dollars More (1965)

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n617/frankog10/key_art_for_a_few_dollars_more_this_zpsa478a60a.png

it's so hard not to put this #1... hell, it was hard enough to put anything in front of Nightmare on Elm Street '84 bc of how much I love that movie. Hopefully that gets across how much I love this flick and the last one to come on my list.

http://images4.static-bluray.com/reviews/2898_3_large.jpg

this is the only western in my top 30... probably bc i don't even see it as a western... but as a mystical old folk tale masquerading as a western... about bandits and bounty killers, with some of the best music i've ever heard by the master, Morricone.

well-said gunslinger, that's my stance on westerns as well

as you can see by there being no other westerns in my top 30, i'm not exactly crazy about them...

this just happens to be one that rises above (almost) every other movie, to me :) not a statement on westerns but on one individual movie

Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)

could ramble on about it... but i'll try not to be too self-indulgent. directed by Michael Curtiz, starring James Cagney and Pat O'Brien, along with Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan... the story follows two childhood buddies from new york city slums, who grow up on opposite sides of the law.

thanks JayDee

i've been trimming my favorites list down as much as possible over the past few weeks

here's a list of movies I like a lot that just barely missed out:

Horror of Dracula (1958), the Thing (1982), Nosferatu (1922), Dawn of the Dead (1978), the Invisible Man (1933), an American Werewolf in London (1968), Gremlins (1984), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Heat (1995), GoodFellas (1990), Taxi Driver (1976), It Happened One Night (1934), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Unforgiven (1992), High Plains Drifter (1973), Sunset Blvd (1950), Chinatown (1974), the Maltese Falcon (1941), Harakiri (1962), the Sting (1973), Aliens (1986), the Godfather (1972), Godfather Part 2 (1974)

honestly, i'd have a hard time putting these in any kind of sensible order

hope you guys enjoyed my list

if anybody happens to watch one from my top 30 that they hadn't previously seen, let me know what you think if you'd like. i'd enjoy hearing about your viewings
