That's a pretty random list, I'm curious as to why you put movies like Happy Gilmore, Batman Begins, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall alongside Citizen Kane, Star Wars, and Shawshank Redemption. Doesn't really make sense. What is your definition of 5/5? Is this a movie without major flaws? If so, I don't think The Matrix or the above 3 movies I mentioned really qualify.

What did you like so much about Forgetting Sarah Marshall that you rewarded it 5 stars?
I forgot to add wing chun to the original list, my favorite action comedy.
Edited to add it above

All good questions. Some of these movies do have major flaws, but what they do well, they do it so well that I love them for it and can overlook those flaws.
The man from nowhere is my favorite action thriller but I would change the beginning and end. It was only after subsequent viewings that I really started to appreciate how awesome the middle hour and a half was, and i increased my rating from 4/5 to 5/5. the style and atmosphere are incredibly well done.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is my favorite comedy. Not necessarily the funniest movie, but overall i thought a great one. The characters are all real personalities, and it kind of feels like a vacation in hawaii just watching it with all the oceans and pretty colors. relaxing and funny and great characters, so i loved it
Anything with comedy though is very difficult to rate and I think much more subjective than a drama. So happy gilmore falls under that too, it's a comedy and really made me laugh even after multiple viewings, but some people might not find the jokes as funny, like chubbs wooden hand.
Do they deserve to be in the same category as citizen kane? Well they're certainly not as artistic, but what comedy is? It's hard to justify that they're equal, but I can say they were both a great experience for me, although very different.
I don't know how to justify batman begins haha. i could say i really enjoyed it but thats a crappy argument.
I'm curious though why you threw the matrix into the flawed list. The whole thing about fusion of humans for power was a little stupid, but as I understand it there is a better explanation it was just thought that most viewers would be too dumb to understand it and so they left it out. I also went to college for computer science so maybe I have a bias toward all the computer metaphors

Let's see, these are among the 5/5 movies that I have seem, by director. I am bound to omit something, but about 60 of my top 100 favorites and all movies that I certified great on the thread "Guaporense's certified greats" are 5/5 movies in my book. So I have about 70 movies that I rate 5/5.

Batman Begins, Finding Nemo, Fifth Element, Shrek, The Lion King, Ace Ventura When Nature Calls, Happy Gilmore
These are 3/5 movies at best.
But kudos for Dreams, Gladiator, Back to the Future, LOTR and Citizen Kane among other movies that I also agree deserve 5/5 stars.

Comedy is a personal preference, so I understand rejecting those, but lion king?
That movie was fantastic, and simbas character arc is one of the best i've ever seen in a film
I really didn't enjoy barry lyndon or alien. Alien had absolutely no characters, aside from the two guys that wanted more money everyone on board was really bland. aliens was better, definitely a move up when they replaced ridley scott with james cameron
Some of those are good, i really liked bicycle thieves, clockwork orange, shining, apoc now, once upon a time in america, good bad and the ugly, ikiru, seven samurai, blade runner, pulp fiction all 4/5 for me.
I still have to see tokyo story but I've heard it's really good. Also haven't seen a couple of those kurosawa films you listed, looks like you're a huge fan of his.
I actually edited pulp fiction and watched it in chronological order.. it wasn't as good lol

I've given 7 5 ratings from the films I've seen. Most of these movies are worth high ratings, but some of them are more on the lines of a 2/5.

Feel free to point out which ones and what you hated about them.
Helps me to get a feel for what people on this board are into

I appreciate your love of comedy, Foster - a genre that seems to get short shrift on these boards.
I also really liked Shrek, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Tootsie.
After seeing your rating of Happy Gilmore I'm tempted to watch it. But I'm also apprehensive. When Adam Sandler bombs it's such a nightmare. Is it really that good?

I've seen 16 adam sandler movies
4 are 2/5
11 are 3/5
1 is 4/5
1 is 5/5
The two good ones are billy madison, and the best is happy gilmore by far, which incidentally are also two of his earliest films.
Kind of like m night shyamalan how he came out with sixth sense and unbreakable.. two great movies and then he's been bombing ever since

Cool experiment, but you had to know it wouldn't be as good. The film is designed to take advantage of anachronistic storytelling from the start. It's not like they shot it and just decided to shuffle occurrences around to make it a better movie.

Yes I did know it would be as good haha.
And it has been called a crime by a couple of people.
But the point was dissection, not desecration
My attempt to better understand exactly why they did what they did

That's a cool experiment.
I remember after I watched Pulp Fiction for the first time, I spent a while discussing with a friend how and whether everything fit together chronologically.

Beginning: travolta and jackson get the case and grab breakfast at a diner
middle: travolta goes on a date
end: willis meets zed
oddly enough once you see willis box, the entire end of the film is in chronological order. it's only the beginning that is mixed up

It felt a bit too much simplistic for me and the song and dance numbers made me cringe. I think I have watched about 100 animated films superior to the lion king.
I really didn't enjoy barry lyndon or alien. Alien had absolutely no characters, aside from the two guys that wanted more money everyone on board was really bland.
But not all movies have to be about having entertaining characters. In fact, most of the greatest movies ever made are not about the characters.

They are very different movies. Alien is a horror movie, Aliens is an action movie.

Indeed.
It felt a bit too much simplistic for me and the song and dance numbers made me cringe. I think I have watched about 100 animated films superior to the lion king.
I'll chalk it up to personal taste.
I thought the songs fit really well into simbas character, "just can't wait to be king" didn't make me cringe at all. I typically don't even like musicals.
But not all movies have to be about having entertaining characters. In fact, most of the greatest movies ever made are not about the characters.
That may be true, but I was just pointing out one flaw with the film that I thought could have been used to improve it.
They are very different movies. Alien is a horror movie, Aliens is an action movie.
I actually just rewatched both Alien and Aliens last week, including a second viewing with the directors commentary on both. So I am very well aware of the fact that they're different genres. Having said that, I typically don't like horror movies as much as action so I'll admit I may have a bias. Still I've seen many horror movies better than alien. Frankly, I was shocked at how slow and boring it was (compared to my expectations from having watched it as a kid) and if you're going to draw things out that slowly then I would argue that having some real personalities and complex relationships becomes vital. Maybe I'll go sniff out a horror thread and see what I'm missing
As every literate film buff should be.
I can't argue with that. He's one of the few directors to have more than one film on my list. I won't consider myself a real film buff until I've rated 2000 so I've still got 300 or so to go. and a couple of those in my queue are the kurosawas I've yet to see

I wouldn't agree with some of your choices but if you love those films, then why not?I give maximum to either flawless films or just personal favorites.
As every literate film buff should be.
it's probably one of the stupidest things I've read in this forum.
I have about 30 movies that i rate 5/5, all of them are personal favorites that moved me one way or another and / or got me more involved in movies.

This is great! Know I know where to get my next movies to watch. Thanks guys, great lists.
It's been almost two years and I haven't added any new films to this list :(
Someday I'll modify my ratings to make things like this more practical and easier to track, but so far my amount of 5/5 in feature movies alone is 203. The last one being His girl Friday just five days ago.

Pretty bizarre list with no rhyme or reason to it...I'd love to know why you give these particular films 5 out of 5 stars.
titanic---without a doubt .
Well, I decided to change a bit my rating system and become more rigourous... So, I'll only give 5/5 to movies I watch more than once and that still hit me as perfect or even better after the second watch!
The movies on my top 10 deserve all that rating but not a lot more...
