Love Acid House (I nominated it) but I couldn't stand the pessimism in Eyes Wide Open. If you like Trainspottign checkout The Acid House.

Coming from a guy who has only been able to vote in a handful of matchups, not sure how they could be strategic.

Love Acid House (I nominated it) but I couldn't stand the pessimism in Eyes Wide Open. And Acid House is not pessimistic how? Also not too sure how a depiction of a very real, modern situation could be unbearably pessimistic.

It was dark humor, which is much different. Not even that dark just highly sexual and perverted. Maybe the second act had pessimism, but it had a bright side and IMO much more powerful. You'd think Eyes Wide Shut was about the holocoust, or genocide in Rwanda. Exaggerated, and it's sad that this happens it must be executed in a humane way for a film.

Sorry, strategic was the wrong word. Instead I'll say some strange, coincidental pairings.
And WT: change your dang avatar - you're confusing me.

what's a strange pairing in this bracket? I only ask because I've only seen 3 of the films.

I thought The Acid House was one of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune to watch. And no, I'm not just saying that because I nominated Eyes Wide Open. I didn't think Trainspotting was all that it's cracked up to be but it's a flaming masterpiece compared to Acid House. I'm really at a loss to understand how you can think Eyes Wide Open is more pessimistic about human nature than The Acid House. It's depressing, certainly, but I hardly think that makes it a bad film. The Acid House was an exercise in poorly produced, badly acted, plotless unpleasantness with little or no redeeming features.

And how much some people despise it, adds to my love of it. It's certainly unpleasant but it's one of the few movies that actually shocked me. It's ****ed up, and for me it made lovable. But no I don't think it's that pessimistic as everyone is suggesting, the second act had drama certainly, but it had a bright ending. And the first two, for me, were nothing more than dark humor. But I don't see the acting was bad, sometimes it was overdone, but it was mostly believable. And I think it kicks the **** out of Trainspotting, which looks like a kiddy film compared to it.
Winter, if you've seen both why didn't you vote for one?

To me, it felt like it was being shocking and offensive for the sake of it. There was no artistic, intellectual or storytelling merit to justify it or to balance it out.
the second act had drama certainly, but it had a bright ending.
I thought this was the most depressing of the three! Sad people doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over. Sure, there was a wry humour to that, as there was with the character of God in the first, but not enough to make the rest of the film worthwhile. It felt like a lot of padding, despite it being really only three shorts strung together.
I imagine that, like Trainspotting, the book was more effective. But at least Trainspotting the film had a certain amount of style and visual inventiveness. It captured a zeitgeist while this just seemed to be riding on Trainspotting's coattails.

Young Guns got two votes (still loses to Little Big Man though).
Some upsets in this bracket. I'm quite delighted that The Shawshank Redemption lost out, I think it's dreadfully overrated most of the time (sorry rauldc14). Surprised Four Lions was so popular (actually quite surprised 10 people have seen it, considering how few votes some of the other match-ups got).
