Hi all

I very recently registered on this forum, mainly because I thought it was a movie discussion forum.

Indeed, this part of the forum is entitled 'General Movie Discussion.'

However, I don't find any real discussion - just a bunch of lists and rankings. Of course, these can be helpful when someone recommends a movie I haven't seen. But it's not the same as discussing films.

Am I missing something?

Sounds a lot more like a rhetorical question than an actual one. But I'll answer it anyway. :)

There's nothing about lists or rankings that precludes discussion. Indeed, they tend to spark quite a bit of it. For example, here's a thread called Top Ten Ganster Movies (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=14485). If you were just skimming thread titles you'd probably assume this was just a list. And while it is technically a list, there's a lot more there than just a series of movie titles. There's discussion, argument, and elaboration. Lists and categories are generally just jumping off points.

But if partaking in discussions in this context is problematic for whatever reason, then you should peruse some of the other forums. "Real" discussion presumably means depth, and that's achieved with focus. Which means the topic is usually going to be either a) a specific film or b) a specific director/writer/actor. And threads on those topics are usually found (or moved into) the Movie Reviews (http://www.movieforums.com/community/movie-reviews.html) or Actors, Awards, & Directors (http://www.movieforums.com/community/actors-awards-directors.html) forums.

I'd also recommend the Movie Club archives (http://www.movieforums.com/movieclub/archive.html), as well. Some of the discussions aren't as long as others, but they're all pretty in depth.

I kinda see what the OP means but as Yoda said, maybe looking into the threads rather than just the titles...

When I make a list though, I welcome discussion on my choices... most of the time it evokes confusion in whoever reads them and I get asked lots of questions about my sanity... but still, it does start a discussion or three.

Start your own thread and discuss whatever you want.

I would dig a little deeper than just skimming thread titles. PLENTY of discussion going on.

Indeed, go in and read the actual topics and you will find a lot of film talk.
