I haven't seen anything new lately because I haven't been able to. College has taken it's toll on my spare time so here's something older but definitely worth talking about: SpaceCamp
This movie is quite generic, bland in some ways, not very well made as far as the overall quality goes and I absolutely love it. This may just be because I love every space movie I come across but SpaceCamp is up on the list for me despite being a little cheezy.
The movie got critisized quite badly when it was released but not so much because it was bad. It just had bad timing. Unfortunately, when the movie was supposed to be released, the space shuttle disaster happened. The movie was postponed, but still, it was too soon and people simply didn't like to be reminded about this tragedy. This would be the reason why it's not a very nice memory for some people.
Many elements of this movie were done very well. It does give you some insight into how some of the space equipment works and what it takes to be an astronaut. If you have any interest in this kind of stuff, you will at least like the movie for that.
The characters differ from each other which makes some scenes interesting. Unfortunately, the story didn't take advantage of that very much. At the end of the day, it's just a bunch of kids accidentaly launched into space whose issues are resolved because of the near death experience. We've seen that already in many other movies about kids. Really, watching this or any other generic family movie is the same experience. The only thing that's different is the setting.
To sum up, this movie is not for everyone. If you're just looking for a good 80's movie, watch something else. If you like space movies though, this is a must for you. It may not be Star Wars but still, in my opinion, you can't call yourself a space kid, if you haven't seen this movie.
