Well folks, the time has finally arrived. It's that time of year again to get our brackets rolling. The quest for the 2013 championship is underway. Which film will join 2001: A Space Odyssey and Le Cercle Rouge as the MOFO tournament champions? Well, we have a ways to go before we know that answer, but this will be the beginning.
Perhaps the champ will come out of bracket 1, a bracket that on the outside looks stacked with best picture winners All About Eve and No Country for Old Men, comedy favorites Harold and Maude, Royal Tenenbaums, and Groundhog Day, or perhaps one of the best war movies of all time in Saving Private Ryan.
Like normal, the beginning brackets will last for 1 month, giving everybody up until March 1st to vote on these matches. Rules remain the same (tiebreakers etc.). So without further ado, here is bracket 1! Enjoy!

1. Harold and Maude
Saving Private Ryan
This is pretty easy one for me, SPR is one of my favorite of the nineties and my second favorite Spielberg. One of the best war movies, and of course props to the opening sequence. Harold and Maude was a bit of a let down for me though. It wa decent but both of the characters were such turn offs.
8. No Country for Old Men
9. Fargo
Another easy one for me, No country was one of the most overrated films I've ever seen. While Fargo was fun and memorable.

Bracket 1
1. Harold and Maude
16. Saving Private Ryan
8. No Country for Old Men
9. Fargo
5. The Five Obstructions
12. Girls will be Girls
4. The Isle
13. In the Loop
3. All About Eve
14. The Royal Tenenbaums
6. Sangre de mi sangre
11. Z Channel: A Magnificient Obsession
7. Never Give a Sucker an Even Break
10. They Might Be Giants
2. Groundhog Day
15. Pygmalion
These are the 1st 3 matchups that I am able to vote on. Saving Private Ryan is one of my favorite war movies of all-time, and it is a gimme over a Harold and Maude movie that I just don't like one bit. Spielberg casts a true look of how devasting war can be.
No Country wins (by a bigger margin than I originally thought). I do think that it is a superior film to Fargo, and while I do like Fargo, I may have overrated it a tad upon its first viewing. No Country has to be my favorite from the Coen's.
The Royal Tenenbaums beats All About Eve, though I'm not too fond of either of them. The casting is what makes my choose Tenenbaums over All About Eve, though I don't believe anyone gives their best performance in the Tenenbaums. Maybe upon another watch of All About Eve I would change my opinion, but it didn't connect as that good a film for me. I know its a favorite of everyone's but it isn't my cup of tea.

Argh! This is a horrible bracket. There's only four films there that I even like.
I'm guessing The Isle is the Korean one?

Like I said, it seems strange the coincidence that Fargo and No Country are matched up against each other. But it really is a match that could go either way. I like No Country more because it feels a bit more badass, whereas Fargo sometimes treads into territory where it seems a bit horrifyingly unrealistic. I mean really, a woodchipper? But to be honest, they are both grand.

It was a weak attempt for me to say why No Country is better, but that's just how I feel. Liked the woodchipper actually.

8. No Country for Old Men
9. Fargo
Unfortunately this is the only set that I can vote in, and believe me this is really, really close. I'm a massive fan of the Coen Brothers and I absolutely love both of these films, I think I nominated Fargo for this tournament though, and I would probably say I slightly enjoyed it more for its dark comedic side.
