Most of you have probably already noticed, but last week we officially launched our Oscar Picks Pool (http://www.movieforums.com/oscars). It's the fourth year running, so most of you know the deal already. :) Just figured I'd toss a thread up to go with the annoying box exhorting you to participate on the forum home page.

Same deal as last year: all registered users can dive right in and make their picks (http://www.movieforums.com/oscars). Non-registered users just need to enter and confirm an email address, and they're good to go. You can update your picks any time up until the ceremony starts on February 24th, and it's all free and low-key, so don't worry if you're just guessing. If you learn more about the favorites later you can always come back and update them, and if not, it's still fun.

As a small bonus, we'll send a Blu-ray or DVD of any of the nine Best Picture nominees to whoever finishes with the highest score. Ties will be broken based on whoever submitted their final list earliest. And we reserve the right to reject entries based on collusion. Or if we just don't like you.

So that's that! Make your Oscar picks! (http://www.movieforums.com/oscars) The more people who make picks, the more fun it is, because I post real-time stats on the results of each category in the Oscar Chat, which, yes, we'll be holding again, for the sixth consecutive year.

At some point I'll have to give badges or something to everyone who's done it.

Or maybe shame badges for people who don't. :suspicious:

I've just clicked Lincoln for each one it was nominated for. It's the only one out of all the Noms that I've seen.
If Lincoln isn't nominated I just went for Les Mis.

I voted Prometheus for Visual Effects though.

I'll be making some picks.

Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges.

Actually, I could go for some stinkin' badges.

I'm going to try and do some research this year. It's always the documentaries, short films (live and animated), foreign film, and sound and visual awards that throw everything for a loop.

You know, I'm not the biggest fan of the Oscars but I like the season here at Movie Forums. It actually makes me like and care for the Oscars just a bit more, and I think that is largely due to the members here on the forum and what Yoda does for the awards show.

^^Me too,^^

We all know Satan killed the Oscars back in the 90's, but I do, at least, sit and pray over its corpse here, with you good people, on Oscar night.:D

I usually end up in the top 5 with my picks, never been #1 though.

Yoda

Yup; in 2010 you tied for third. In 2011 you tied for fourth. And in 2012 you tied for fourth again. Two off the lead the first time, and three off the other two times.

Skepsis93

If I remember I was pretty close to winning last time, hopefully this year I can go one better. :D

Yoda

Yup, you were only two off the lead, 17 of 24.

Yeah, same. They're way, way more fun for me because of the chat. Stressful, too, sometimes, since I've got lots of things to worry about now. But I enjoy them far, far more than I used to thanks to the picks and the chat and everyone's running commentary. It's probably tripled my general interest in the Oscars.

Bump!

We've already got two-thirds as many people as last year, with four weeks left to go. Great pace! If you haven't made your picks yet, do it now (http://www.movieforums.com/oscars)! I'm just going to keep bugging you until you do. :D I'm even gonna bust out some big overlay on the home page.

I participated because Yoda asked me and because he clearly put in some hard work once again.

Did I participate in last year's?

Yep. And you tied for third.

I'm going all the way this year, I feels it in me bones. I even made half-informed guesses in the shorts/docs categories this year, rather than just blindly guessing.

I've done the same with shorts/docs even though I haven't seen them, this is the first proper year where I've paid attention and should be watching the Oscars and I'm looking forward to it :)

Probably/hopefully, how do I access that then? And seeing as you are a UK member, how are you planning on watching the Oscars? I've seen they've got a program on tonight on Sky Movies but I'm not sure if it'll actually cover the event and awards, PM me if you want cheers :)

Yoda
02-25-13, 12:33 PM
To those who couldn't make the chat, IrishSansRed ended up taking the win, tying the all-time pool record of 20 of 24. The leaderboard shows a tie with 19, but that's because of the tie (the first in over 40 years) in the Best Sound Editing category. Needless to say, the picks system wasn't setup for such an unusual occurrence, so anyone who picked Skyfall (as Irish did) actually got one more correct than is listed. I'll have to rework that for next year, even though it'll probably never happen again.

Congrats to Irish for the big one, and to all the other leaders. And a special shout out to Fiscal, who won this thing each of the last two years and came one away from tying for the win again this year. Very impressive!

Darn, shame on me. It sounds like a lie, but I did change from Brave to Wreck it Ralph. Still, would have been one or two away.

Yoda
02-25-13, 02:41 PM
I believe you; I did the same thing. And I went back and forth on Waltz and Jones a ton, too. That would've been enough to force the tie! Very competitive year; lots of people a pick or two away from the top.

rauldc14
02-25-13, 02:43 PM
I know it's insanely early, but I was looking at potential canidates for this year and well I'll just say it looks like it could potentially be a down year for film.

Miss Vicky
02-25-13, 02:57 PM
Well, Wreck It Ralph is the better movie and should have won. Brave was the inferior, illegitmate offspring of Brother Bear and How To Train Your Dragon. Huge disappointment.

Hey Yods, when is the overlay thing coming down? It never actually went away for me after I voted for some reason, but it's still asking me to make my picks.

Me too. And between Spielberg and Lee. Director and Original Screenplay were the ones that screwed me over. :p

Thanks for reminding me.

For my own technical edification, and to improve the script, do you browse in private mode, and/or without checking "Remember me" when you login? Because once you've made the picks it shouldn't show up any more. It'd also be helpful to know if by not going away, you mean it showed up every time, or just once or twice after the first (the latter is intended; the former isn't).

Thanks in advance. :)

Miss Vicky
02-25-13, 06:17 PM
I don't use private mode. I don't think I checked "remember me" either.

It showed up every time I came here, both from the home computer and from the work computer.

The only way that can happen, theoretically, then, is if you have JavaScript or cookies turned off. Do you know offhand if either of those is the case?

Either way, it's removed for now. But it's a useful thing I'm sure I'll be using again, so it's always helpful to debug this stuff. :)

Miss Vicky

No. Grand Hotel and The Broadway Melody won one.

Okay, so the overlay is gone, but there's still the "Make Your Picks" box over the "This Just In" feed.

Next year I'll probably have a smaller ballot option for people who just want to pick the more prominent awards. They won't qualify to win the pool, but most people just do it for fun, anyway. It can be hard getting people to pick 24 categories! Might as well have a scaled down option.

rauldc14

well, not everything has to be filled out though either, am I correct?

Yoda
03-01-13, 02:32 PM

Not sure I understand, but the picks pool has always required that choices be made in all 24 categories.

I wrestled with this when I first built the system four years ago, but decided to require them all, so that everyone would be eligible to win. But next year I think I'll make it optional. Anyone who fills them all in gets a chance to compete, but people who just want to pick the "big" categories for fun can do so, too.

rauldc14
03-01-13, 03:20 PM
ah, didn't know all 24 were required. That answers the question.
