So I actually took quite a bit of time to compile my list. I went through a list of all the movies that came out each year that I've watched movies, and jotted down my favorites from each year. That left me with about 300 titles, which I finally narrowed down to 200. I think some of you may think I have odd taste, and I'm not a very good writer, but we'll see how it goes. I hope some of you enjoy the list, and with any luck, someone may discover one of their new favorites.

Looking forward to it cricket. With a massive 200 films there is certainly a lot of scope to have quite a mixture with a few surprises thrown in, and hopefully a few films I'm not really aware of.

Well I said I was hoping for a few films I wasn't really aware of, and I think I just got 4 out of 4! :D

cricket
11-05-12, 04:00 PM
Yea you know I think the fact that I went through every movie released year by year helped me not leave anything out. So it's not just all films that are fresh in my mind. I'm also 41; I'm just guessing that might be older than most of the members here.

I need to watch Clean and Sober again. I don't really remember it. Talk Radio and Essex Boys are both films I like a lot and I haven't seen the other.

#196-Hostel(2005)
Trashy but I enjoy it, definitely a guilty pleasure. It has a sick sense of humor which I like.
http://www.moviemarket.com/library/posters/505041.jpg

#195-Hooper(1978)
Burt Reynolds and Jan-Michael Vincent are rival stuntmen in this boyhood favorite. I loved this as a 7 year old when it came out, and it is still enjoyable now.

No seen any films yet unfortunately. Really want to see Hostel as I want to start watching more lower quality B-movie type horrors and it's directed by Roth and produced by Tarantino. Then Airplane I really need to see as well, everyone seems to love it.

honeykid
11-05-12, 04:46 PM
Three of the first four are great, and Essex Boys is watchable. Talk Radio was one of the films that came close to making my 100, but I've not seen it for years, so I dropped it. Hostel I have, but haven't watched, while Hooper is 'one of those Burt Reynolds films' that I just don't get along with. Poltergeist and Airplane are both superb.

Why did you pick 200?

cricket
11-05-12, 04:47 PM
I would say Airplane and Poltergeist are considered classics that most people have seen. A lot of the others so far weren't even considered hits, I don't think.

cricket
11-05-12, 04:51 PM
I picked 200 because I started with about 300. So just narrowing it down to 200 was a chore. And also, a tough thing was finding the right balance between my all time favorite, and movies I would watch now. For instance, I wouldn't be in such a rush to watch Hooper right now, but I absolutely loved it as a boy. It deserves to be on my all time favorites list and it wouldn't be possible if it was only 100. I hope that makes sense.

I love Poltergeist, but I don't like films like Hostel. The only torture porn type movie that I like is The Loved Ones.

Not sure about Hostel though, I'm not a big fan of Torture Porn...

Yea there was a part of me that didn't want to include it as I figured it would get some flack. But I wanted to be completely honest in my choices. I certainly don't feel like I'm growing intellectually while watching a film like that. But if I do enjoy it, I guess there's nothing I can do about it.

#192-House of Games(1987)
A David Mamet film about con men. A great plot with twists that will keep you guessing until the end.

#191-Hustle and Flow(2005)
The only film of it's kind on my list. Terrance Howard is amazing as a pimp with big time dreams of becoming a rap star.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e9/Hustle_and_flow.jpg

#190-Southern Comfort(1981)
Deliverance type of film except it's National Guardsmen fighting each other and the backwoods *Louisiana Cajuns whom they have royally pissed off. Directed by the great Walter Hill.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/be/Southerncomfortposter.jpg

#189-The Stepfather(1987)
Creepy horror/thriller about an outwardly normal man who likes to change identities and families. Good enough to spawn a remake, which I have avoided.

Wow so far I've only seen one!!! That being Airplane. Certainly a lot of films for me to investigate, see it they seem like my kind of thing (though Hostel will not be one of them, I've no time for torture porn). Southern Comfort I'm aware of as I want to explore more of Walter Hill's work. House of Games looks interesting.

#185-The Witches of Eastwick(1987)

Cricket,
First I must congratulate you for completeing a list of 200!! (Well I know so far you only listed 15 but knowing you went thru that whole process of narrorwing down so many you deserve a round of applause!) LOL you should have done all 300 since you started with that many!! OMG you know what would make the biggest list ever is if someone listed in order from EVERY MOVIE THEY EVER SAW!!! That would prolly be like 5,000!!!!!!!!!! (that may be a bit over-exhadurated, lol).

So far I like your list, well a few I havn't seen but if I could thumbs up more than once per post it would be for Hostel, Airplane, Poltergeist and Bad Boys.

Still liking the list Cricket, Bad Boys is fun, hope the sequel is in the list as well though, it's brilliantly OTT fun.

I recently saw the original Maniac, pretty good horror flick, much of what it has suspense wise was newer back then. It was also kickass to see Tom Savini, love his backseat joke.

Some of these older flicks I hadn't even heard of, need to check them out.

Romper Stomper.

Finally one I've actually seen! (I have it on DVD as well)

It's an interesting movie, for sure, and very well acted. I wouldn't rate it near as high as you did, but it's a solid choice.

#176-Every Which Way but Loose(1978)
Clint Eastwood does comedy as a prize fighter who pals around with an orangutan. The sequel, Any Which Way You Can, is also fun. Another one of my boyhood favorites.
http://www.moviemarket.com/library/photos/285/285264.jpg

#175-Cabin Fever(2002
Probably an unpopular choice but I thoroughly enjoyed it, and found it quite funny. Eli Roth has this thing about putting weird, demented children in his films. I don't know why but I always get a kick out of that.

#174-Cliffhanger(1993)
Sylvester Stallone is at his best in this underrated action flick with terrific villains.

This is why you like the stuff you do. :D

Requiem for a Dream is the only one of the first four that I like, however, A Few Good Men is decent, though I think it's Cruise, Bacon and a chillingly disturbing Kiefer Sutherland that make it.

Assault on Precinct 13 is on my 100 and, like you, I think the remake is decent. I also agree with you about Eric Roberts in Star 80.

The 1st time I saw this, it didn't do anything for me. Watched it again recently, and really liked it. I like every single thing about it, but I'm afraid I don't quite love it as much as most. But it is the type of film that's very re-watchable, so who knows; maybe it moves up my list some day.

I quite like Lethal Weapon, it's one of the few Mel Gibson films I like. It's really quite dark and I like that. I've never seen the appeal of "Escape" nor Snake. Killing Zoe I've not exactly stayed away from, but it's never appealled. The Sure Thing is meh.

Chopper's just outside my top 10. Love that film. Commando should've been on my 100. It's about the only action film from that period that I love in the same way and just as much as I did back then. Jackie Brown is horribly underrated. The attention Kill Bill and IB get, when this doesn't, is criminal. Though I still think it's self-indulgent and about 20 minutes too long. Return Of The Living Dead is just straight up fun.

Although it is responsible for every pop culture reference that, at the moment, has culminated in this.

Rosemary's Baby I liked more the last time I watched it than I did before, but that's not the same as liking it. "Fast Times" is ok, but, again, it's not something that's ever appealled to me the way it does for others.

Dirty Dancing? No. Definately not. Possibly my least favourite of the "girly five" as I call them. (Grease, Pretty Woman, Ghost and Mamma Mia are the other four.)

That's an interesting perspective. To me, as a big De Niro fan, he was virtually non-existent in this film. That's not to say he wasn't good. It just means that it's not the De Niro role I go into hoping for. This was a very understated role for him, not the iconic role I want to see from him in a gangster film. Great action and special effects highlight one of the best sequels ever. Lower ranked then it once would have been. It was lacking a little something for me last time I saw it, but I'm not sure what. I thought Robert Patrick was especially great in this.

This John Carpenter horror also has a dark sense of humor. A really well done movie for what it is.

#105-The Longest Yard(1974)
If you like football and Burt Reynolds, which I do, you'll love this sports comedy with a great concept. Another movie that spawned a piss poor remake.

A set of ok films.

It's been a while since I've watched it, but Straw Dogs , has that low-key menace that I like. T2 is good, but I'm always bored by the end. Christine is also good, but it's not something I love. JD will be pleased, though, as he's a recent convert. The Longest Yard is ok, but I think The Cannonball Run is the only Burt Reynolds film that I truly love.

Not seen Straw Dogs. While I've become quite the fan of Dustin Hoffman it doesn't exactly appeal to me as a good time at the movies.

Terminator 2 is still awesome, and yes Christine is another film of yours that I just watched recently. Really enjoyed it. Got Longest Yard on DVD but not watched

This is the funniest I've seen Robert De'Niro. He plays a bounty hunter trying to bring in a perfect Charles Grodin. Dennis Farina is hysterical as a mob boss.

#99-Manhunter(1986)
Before Silence of the Lambs you had this thriller directed by Michael Mann. The great actor Brian Cox plays Hannibal Lecter but Hannibal is not as big a focal point as in Silence of the Lambs.
Manhunter is not as well known as the other, but the effectiveness is comparable. It's just lacking the other's big name stars and production values.

#97-Deliverance(1972)
Burt Reynolds headlines the cast in this controversial hillbilly tale of terror. Most notable for perhaps cinema's most famous rape scene and the dueling banjos. Also some great lines such as "squeal like a pig", and "you sure got a pretty mouth".

#96-Rampage(2010)
I've heard a lot of negative things about the Director, Uwe Boll. I'm not familiar with any of his other work, but this was a chilling film. Most films that deal with shooting rampages only show small snippets of the actual event, if any at all. Most films focus on the events before and after. This does too but the whole rampage is shown in great detail, and the effect is unsettling. I almost felt guilty watching this. The ending, showing how it plays out, is also done rather well.

Arguably the best low budget horror film ever, The Evil Dead is a pretty scary movie. I'm interested in the remake as it looks pretty good.

Al Pacino is good here playing a pathetic, and somewhat sympathetic mob guy, who is frustrated because he never moves up the ranks. Overlooked crime film starring Sean Penn as a man who returns to Hell's Kitchen after an extended absence. He quickly hooks back up with his best friend, played by Gary Oldman. He also hooks back up with his old girlfriend(Gary Oldman's sister) played by Robin Wright. Gary Oldman's brother, played by a chilling Ed Harris, is an Irish mob boss. All the action you would expect from a crime/mobster flick is here. But it's also about internal struggles and loyalty. Gary Oldman is in top form here and this is a must see for his fans.

I suppose that's kind of the reason why, although Keitel is great in this film, De Niro steals the show with a fantastic and disturbing performance as Johnny Boy and certainly Scorsese recognised his potential and reversed the roles of the duo - Taxi Driver. But yeh aside from Scorsese it's a bit odd how he never really starred as a lead as many times as he should in good films instead of just being a great supporting star (Pulp Fiction).

I think this movie rates higher than it would because I frequent the area and know a few guys like this. The lingo and settings are very authentic, the acting is very good, and the action is intense. My only negative is the FBI agent played by Jon Hamm. I thought this character and actor was very weak.

#39-The Departed(2006)
Another one set in Boston, this film is actually a slight disappointment for me. With my favorite director(Scorsese) joining my favorite actor(Nicholson), I expected this to be top 5 material for me. Besides the opening sequence, Jack Nicholson did not make a big impression on me in this. The rest of the cast carried this film for me. I thought DiCaprio was the standout, and this is the first time I was really impressed by him. Matt Damon was also great playing against type as a snaky bad guy. Ray Winstone was awesome as always in a small role and Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg were a riot. The ending could've been better for me but overall I love this film.

Very personal choice for me as when it came out, I was similar to the main character-everybody compared me to him. I saw this when it was out and remembered liking it. I recently saw it again, and was stunned by how much I enjoyed it. I really liked Al Pacino, and his character, in this. Equal to Pacino was Sean Penn, almost unrecognizable and playing against type, as his nerdy attorney who has demons of his own. Brian De Palma directs this gangster flick that also features a great supporting cast and a cool 70's disco soundtrack.

#30-Casino(1995)
Conflicting feelings as this film disappointed me somewhat. It has *a lot of things going for it that I love; Scorsese, De Niro, Pesci, Las Vegas, gangsters, and a great soundtrack featuring the Rolling Stones. And for the first two thirds of the movie, I thought it may end up being my favorite film of all time. But the last third of this film started to lose me, as I didn't care for the direction the story went. Another negative: I like violent and disturbing films, I actually prefer them. But in the latter stages of this film, there was a particular scene of violence that left a bad taste in my mouth. Special mention should go to Sharon Stone here; she was phenomenal, and I thought she stole this movie. James Woods was also great as her longtime, lowlife pimp/boyfriend.

The fifth of only five films in my top 100 that is not rated R of higher. This is the only film that I've seen in my adult life, where I've felt "movie magic". It really has a lot going for it, and I'm particularly fond of films that tell a story over a number of years. Wonderfully nostalgic, with an incredible soundtrack which can really enhance a film for me. Based on how much I loved it the first time I saw it, it should probably be ranked higher. But it's not quite as rewatchable as some of the films ahead of it.

Of that set I've only seen Unforgiven but I definitely agree that it is a masterpiece. Fantastic film making from Eastwood who creates a Western like no other, one of my all time favourites, I've said it before but I just love how it takes the traditional myths of the Western that we often associate from the glamorised genre and looks it them and shows us that everything wasn't so pretty, that it wasn't as simple as the great hero, the evil villain and that killing isn't all fun - "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man". Man I really do need to write a review for that sometime :p

Unforgiven is a terrific Western! The only thing I hated was the ending, which was peddling what it strove to condemn. If only Eastwood's character did not go all revenge-crazed and instead have the film concluding with a cautionary tale against how violence breeds violence, that would surely have nailed it as a masterpiece.

*Of course John Wayne wouldn't have approved of it.

Whilst I agree that to some extent the ending wasn't fitting with the message I feel to some extent it was. We know that Munny is a man who has previously killed woman and children, and we know Hackman's character is only trying to uphold the law by killing Freeman, but through watching the film we become angered by his death and we like Munny want him to get revenge. The scene in the bar is very good when he says the 'deserve's got nothing to do with it' to Hackman's character and further enforces the blur between good and bad and proves the point that everything is not so clear and pretty, we know looking at it now that the ending and what Munny does is not right but it did feel right at the time. I feel like I'm rambling now anyway so I'm going to stop there :p

Tyler1

We know that Munny is a man who has previously killed woman and children, and we know Hackman's character is only trying to uphold the law by killing Freeman

Which brings us to a very interesting scene right at the beginning where one of the prostitutes offered a cash reward for the killing of 2 cowboys who disfigured her friend and Hackman lets both of them off. Hackman clearly knew that keeping guns out of the town was the best way to avoid bloodshed.

but through watching the film we become angered by his death and we like Munny want him to get revenge.

We are infuriated at how Hackman brutally tortured Logan to extract information about Munny, hence we silently wished the death of Hackman.

The scene in the bar is very good when he says the 'deserve's got nothing to do with it' to Hackman's character and further enforces the blur between good and bad and proves the point that everything is not so clear and pretty, we know looking at it now that the ending and what Munny does is not right but it did feel right at the time.

I think both Hackman's character and Munny were too busy caught up with their notion of justice that they failed to see the bigger picture. One wants to avenge the death of his friend and the other is bent on keeping guns out of the town, both having positive intentions but ironically leading them to greater disaster. Thus the film questions us about our perception of justice. Very interesting, isn't it?

I feel like I'm rambling now anyway so I'm going to stop there :p

Go on ahead... this is what a film forum is for anyway :p

I tried watching this a few times but for whatever reason, I couldn't get through the opening wedding scene. I finally watched it in full a few months ago at age 41! It was more intense than I thought it would be and I loved it. I was expecting Marlon Brando to be the main character of the film, but didn't see it that way at all. Al Pacino as Michael was a revelation. I gained a whole new appreciation for Pacino as an actor after watching this. He was fantastic, as was James Caan. Now I have to get through part 2.

An interesting film to me in that it is slow moving, but never boring. I think all the credit would have to go to Stanley Kubrick and Jack Nicholson. Without either of them, I don't think this is nearly as effective. Kubrick shows his skill creating a mood which would be hard to duplicate; also some unforgettable images. In some ways, I think this is Nicholson's finest performance because he carries this film without much help.

#21-Saturday Night Fever(1977)
First off, I don't like musicals. Movies like Chicago or Moulin Rouge don't interest me at all. This is a drama that just happens to have great music. It is not a light hearted movie like some may think. It's a serious film and a little dark. If you haven't seen it, and plan to, make sure you see the original R-rated version. This is another film that wouldn't be the same without it's lead actor-John Travolta. For me, this is the most iconic film of the 70's. Because besides the movie, it was the music and the lifestyle(The Bee Gees were my first concert in 1979). I'm not sure how popular this movie is with the younger generations, but i love it. On a side note, this was the late film critic Gene Siskel's favorite film.*

Now..American History X was a good movie, with a concise message to it, although I must admit that the ending was rather loose, and confusing. The thing about the ending to American History X is that one doesn't know whether the guy who supposedly changed from being a White Supremacist racist to being a non-racist really stayed changed, or whether or not he reverted back to being the way he'd been before, when his younger brother, Danny, was shot and killed in the boys' room of the school by an AFrican-American student.

#184-The Brood(1979)
A bit slow moving but this horror film freaked me out a bit. Directed by David Cronenberg.

#183-Revenge of the Nerds(1984)
Raunchy 80's comedy classic.

#182-Something Wild(1986)
Melanie Griffith and Jeff Daniels play a wild girl and a straight-laced type who meet and share an adventure. Ray Liotta has his breakthrough role as her violent ex, just out of prison. Perfectly cast and directed by Jonathan Demme.

#181-The Salton Sea(2002)
After a Man's wife is murdered, he changes his identity and infiltrates the world of junkies. Val Kilmer is very good in the lead. Vincent D'Onofrio is awesome as Pooh-Bear, a sicko drug dealer who lost is nose from doing too much blow.

#132-Wedding Crashers(2005)
One of my favorite comedies of the last 10 years or so. I actually think Vince Vaughn is a riot and I loved the Will Ferrell cameo at the end.

#131-Shame(1988)
Another Australian film is amongst the most powerful I've ever seen. I think the only reason I was lucky enough to see it, is because I worked at a video store when it came out. Since then, I've never once heard anyone mention it. Has anybody else seen it? Or even heard of it?

#130-Young Frankenstein(1974)
Classic Mel Brooks comedy. Gene Wilder is one of those guys where I crack up just by looking at him. On a side note, Blazing Saddles was the last cut from my list.

#129-Born on the 4th of July(1989)
I believe this to be Tom Cruise's best overall performance in a lead role. Directed by Oliver Stone.

Born on the 4th of July was an excellent movie, and the book on which it was based (Ron Kovic's autobiography) was fantastic. Oliver Stone did a great job directing this film, and Tom Cruise did a good job as the lead character.

As for Blazing Saddles, well, it was okay, but not a movie that I would've wanted to see more than once. I can't really get into outright make-em-laugh comedy like most people can.
