The Rodent

Well, I've got a Review Thread... and I've done a Top 94 based on my non-biased reviews...

... so here's my own Personal Top 100, based on my own personal preferences and favourites. I've got a feeling that they all appear in my Reviews Thread at some point as well.

Taken me a few weeks to get through it all, but thanks to my new 'pooter I've been able to finish it and get it all listed and ready for the forum.
You also may have noticed that my Favourite Movies List has been deleted from my profile... to keep you wondering what my Top 10 will be :D

I'll put up 3 per post until I get to the Top 10 then go for one per post... first up then:

The Sith

I've not seen any of these three movies, but then I don't generally care for sci-fi or horror.

I'll give you plus rep for sharing, though.

The Rodent
10-20-12, 11:53 PM
Cheers MV! They do get better though. A lot of my favourites could be called guilty pleasures and they're movies that most will be thinking "Eh?" but hey, they're my personals...

... they definitely do get better though.

Miss Vicky

^ That's the way it should be. Personal lists aren't about what's popular or well-respected. They're about what that particular person likes. Other people's opinions be damned.

Someone neg repped you for that? Wow, I'll only  if the post is spam or really offensive or idiotic, not if it's just a different opinion. Aren't we supposed to be having interesting discussions about these things rather than making snap judgments/condemning personal and subjective points of view?

and yeah, much. :D

donniedarko
10-21-12, 12:16 AM
Someone neg repped you for a top 100? I never neg rep during movie discussions (except accidentally as Rodent knows), let alone a top 100 or a movie review. Those are truly all opinions that can differ amongst different people. I just think its retarded that someone would negative rep on a top 100

wintertriangles

I wouldn't neg rep a favorites list unless it had some contemptible picks. These aren't great yet at least Silent Hill I can understand, it's great visually.

Miss Vicky
10-21-12, 12:26 AM
What exactly would qualify as a comtemptible pick?

Was hoping you would do an actual top 100 list and had been meaning to mention it to you recently. Oh yeah and 'personal' lists are definitely the best. How boring would it be if every list was just an AFI clone?

Anyway of what you've listed so far I like/really like Lake Placid, Die Hard 2, Godzilla (decent fun) and True Grit (though I thought it would be better). I love Saving Private Ryan, and would have said the same of K-Pax and Short Circuit in the past but it's been so long since I've seen them that I don't know if I'd still feel the same way.

Looking forward to the rest.

So far, so good.

I'm not a fan of the Star Wars prequels, but I think of "Sith" in a similar manner to "Jedi", so I'm ok with that. I like Lake Placid and, while it's not a favourite, I certainly can understand how it is for others. Silent Hill is good for the first 40 minutes or so, then it just became a video game and I lost interest altogether by the end. Still, it stars Radha Mitchell, so I liked that.

Never cared for "Ryan", enjoyed K-Pax and never bothered with Godzilla. Ditto True Grit. I've not seen Short Circuit since the late 80's and, unlike most, I really like Die Hard 2. In fact, I like it more than ... With A Vengence.

Not a big fan of Cat's Eye, but then, it's a King adaptation so it's hindered from the start. My enjoyment of Dusk Til Dawn is on the wane, but it's still worth watching. I think I've only seen Dog Soldiers 3 or 4 times, but I enjoy it more every time.

Love The Fog and Arachnophobia is good fun (plus, I usually enjoy those animal disaster/infestation films) and then Rambo, which I've not seen.

Looking forward to this. :)

The Rodent
10-21-12, 12:29 PM

Seen TMNT and 8LF, TMNT I absolutely loved as a child but haven't seen it in a while where as I thought 8LF was just all a bit too stupid, I can understand why some may enjoy its style though and should probably give it another viewing.

Anyway I love seeing top 100 lists and how different people have their own unique styles, definitely some choices I'd disagree with so far but yet I love seeing them up there :D

True Grit I think is great though :)

The list is certainly continuing in the same vein it started, very personal and unique. Quite a bunch I've not seen in the last few batches, although I've been meaning to try From Dusk Till Dawn for a while and just recently bought The Fog as I expand out into some of John Carpenter's horror output. Don't think I've even heard of The Quick and The Dead.

Got to give you rep for Arachnophobia and Rambo, and huge props for the Turtles!!!

Damn Rodent, tough to keep up with the fast pace you're setting. And I think nebbit has got it spot on by calling your list interesting. :D

Particular favourites of mine since my last post include Unforgiven, Timecop, Innerspace, American Werewolf in London, First Blood, Rocky Balboa, Stand by Me and Roger Rabbit along with a couple of others.

And no matter what people think of the scattershot 'quality' of your films I don't think anyone could begrudge you credit for having the guts to go with such a personal list. With so many films likely to receive a pasting I can imagine a lot of people who wouldn't be brave enough (myself included! :D)

EDIT - Just saw the new post. Rep for Star Trek and The Fly. I actually only just watched the latter for the first time a few days ago. Still need to see the Expendables films.

If I could watch a movie with you, Rodent, this would be it. I love Poltergeist II and III, I think they're really bad and funny. The first movie is good, but its the sequels that really go beyond borders. Much of it thanks to Zelda Rubinstein, who makes me laugh in II a lot by the way she's always sneaking up on people unexpectedly. II is a lot better than III.

TylerDurden99

It's my favourite of the series, too. It takes the cartoonish elements to the extreme, so much it becomes relentlessly entertaining. It almost becomes a parody of itself, but it's also very self-aware and unashamed.

Most importantly, Indiana Jones character undergoes a change from greedy explorer in search of 'wealth and fame' to a humanitarian.

WOO! Blade Runner, my gosh I havn't seen that in ages! That's on my "watch this week" list!! :)

I love that you listed the ORIGINAL Karate Kid. The newer one with Will Smith's son is alright and all, but you just can't beat the original. And all of last week I swear they were playing the new Karate Kid a couple times a day... I kept looking at the "info" on each one hopeing that they would play the original.

JayDee

The interesting ride continues! Rocky, Karate Kid and Fellowship of the Ring get a huge , and indeed all made my list as well.

I remember liking Predator 2 but think I've only seen that the once compared to the numerous times for the original. Despite being a huge superhero fan still not seen Superman, mostly as I find Superman to be a dull character. And I really didn't like Blade Runner when I watched it a couple of years back. Found it hugely disappointing.

Nope, there's no connection with my recent 80s marathon in my reviews thread... but I'd disagree that the 80s wasn't a special movie decade... the 80s gave us some of the greatest films of all time... including Little Shop Of Horrors...

... which brings me to wintertriangles' question... why Little Shop Of Horrors?... well, good music, well written music, good acting, cheesy acting, knowingly cheesy in every department... and... some of the finest effects and puppetry in cinematic history...

... also overall it's one of the most fun movies you can watch... whether with someone, or by yourself.

Extremely universal.

... which brings me to wintertriangles' question... why Little Shop Of Horrors?... well, good music, well written music, good acting, cheesy acting, knowingly cheesy in every department... and... some of the finest effects and puppetry in cinematic history...I'm not doubting either film, I'm asking why you chose the 80s version as opposed to the original

The Rodent
10-22-12, 11:17 PM
The 80s version simply outweighs the original 1960 version through sheer pizzaz and full on comedy and basic memorability.

Also... I just prefer the remake to the original... which is something you'll never often hear me say.

Good choices in The Goonies and The Shining.

The Goonies is an classic for me, just such a memorable film from when I was younger that never seems to get old.

The Shining is a brilliant film, I love Kubrick and this is one of my favourite of his, Nicholson's character is just brilliant of course.

You've definitely found some consistency quality wise (in my eyes anyway) with the last few posts. Terminator, Terminator 2, Ghostbusters, Lost Boys, Fifth Element and WALL-E are all huge favourites of mine. I'd say 5 would be definites for my top 100 list with one possible. WALL-E in particular is a fantastic pick (#7 on my list), didn't realise you were such a fan of that.

Just going through this is actually making me want to start posting my revised and updated top 100 list but unfortunately still a long way off. I am working on it but there are a lot of films I still want to revisit first

Cheers guys! Winter, which four are the ones you liked?

Not sure what you lot will think if my top 10 though...

The biggest thing for me was how many Stallone movies made it onto the list... I gues I'm a bigger fan of his than I thought.
The other thing is films that are from the past 10-12 years... I always class the more modern films as substandard but was surprised at how many I actually like.

I could be wrong but I think he just meant all of the films in the last post (Alien, Lost Boys, Fifth Element, WALL-E). Apologies to winter if I'm wrong.

That bit about your top 10 worries me though! :p After settling into a nice rhythm of late are you going to go insane for the last 10?!!! :D

Is that a hint to expect some Stallone in the top 10? How many have we had so far? 4 is it?

And I think your list must be one of the most contemporary I've seen on here. :yup: Don't think you've got anything pre-70s do you?

The Rodent

6 Stallone movies... First Blood, Rambo, Rocky, Rocky Balboa, The Expendables, The Expendables 2.
There's more Bruce Willis and Arnie movies in the list than I expected as well. I guess action films are a preference for me.

It's quite an eye opener really when compiling a list like this.

No pre 70s films though. There's a couple from the 70s, Jaws, Superman, Star Wars etc but nothing before that.

As for the Top 10... you'll have to wait till tomorrow ;)

Well, it's finally here... one of the finest movies I've ever seen.
A spookily accurate portrayal of the future for a movie that was seen as far fetched when it was made 25 years ago.

It has everything, love/romance, violence, gore, humour, some great movie quotes for the movie history books, a melting man and a haunting story mixed with a haunting soundtrack and even better special effects and visual effects.
The acting throughout, especially the lead actor, is an utter masterclass too.

I give you:

Cheers HK... it's one of the reasons I've been slamming the remake, even though it's not out yet. It's one of the films I really am not looking forward to.

I'll go see it, and I guarantee I'll hammer it afterwards.

Robo was one of the first adult films I ever saw... I was only about 9 years old and saw it at my brother's house and loved it immediately. My love of Verhoeven is down to the same thing, he's the first genuinely adult directors I saw.

Verhoeven's films pretty much sum up my love of cinema and what people are actually capable of doing with a camera.

Obviously my love for Robocop as a kid is down to the action and gory violence and my current love is through nostalgia and childhood memories etc... but as I've grown older, I can see the movie for the incredibly detailed and clever film that it is.

Great top 10, even though there are some films there I've never seen (Robocop, for one). Definite thumbs up for The Dark Knight (and Rises), Lord of the Rings 3, and Aliens (third movie didn't do anything for me).

The Rodent

You've never seen Robocop, MM?
As you can see, I'd highly recommend it :D Would like to see you guys do a review of it actually, be interesting to see other people's thoughts on it.

Alien 3 is another film that has grown on me over the years. I didn't like it at first but watching the extended cut after I began to love the cinematic version made it one of my faves... I think the dark and dingy look and feel appealed to me.

The rest of them are movies that I can (and have) watch over and over and over in a single day.
Young Guns I've seen over 2500 times and still haven't grown tired of it.

Robocop in particular I've watched like 6 times in a single day, I never get tired of it.
LOTR ROTK I watched 3 times, Aliens I watched 4 times in a day I think.
Have seen TDKR 3 times in the cinema so far and am saving up for the DVD release in about a month's time from now.

I knew you'd be one to mention Alien 3 :D

Don't really know what it is about the third film, I just find it more haunting and much more impacting than the first two... there's just something about it that sticks with me more than the original two.
Still though, the first made 14th and the second came in 10th place, so I guess there's not a lot on it in regard to favouritism.

There are some things I like about Alien 3, but for the most part I think it's a disaster compared to the first two movies and I enjoy Resurrection far more than 3. Alien 3 is a semi-good idea for a movie -- there are things about it that I feel should be changed to make it even better, such as lots of aliens all over the place, just like there was in Aliens. It needs that level of high energy again. James Cameron could have made a better Alien 3. I like the stuff about Ripley having an alien in her body and ultimately killing herself, but I don't know, I think the movie is a great big mess. I really hated how they portrayed Ripley in that film, too.

If it was me, I would have made it bigger and badder than Aliens, but kept the theme of sacrifice. Maybe Ripley crash lands on another planet where human prisoners are sent to live, but the planet is controlled by aliens who watch over the prisoners and in fact the whole planet is crawling with aliens besides these prisoners. In an explosive ending, some of the human survivors leave the planet, but Ripley, having been impregnated with a baby alien, does something that blows up the entire planet, killing herself in the process by staying on the planet.

Too crazy? Well, for me, it would probably be better than the real Alien 3.

The Rodent
10-24-12, 10:48 PM
I think it's why I like 3... it's a completely different tone to the others... it has essences of the first and second mixed into a new background and different tone of tone.

If the filmmakers had gone with a similar concept to what you posted it would just be more of the same, a bit bigger to try and be better but it would just come off like a hustle, like many many sequels of other franchises, namely say, Blade, Resident Evil, Robocop, Star Wars Prequels and so on...

... Alien 3 has expansion in the Alien legend ie; it was the movie that gave us the concept of the Alien taking on the characteristics of its host... it's also the movie that brought the whole thing to an end and wrapped it all up wonderfully with Ripley finally managing to kill off the species for good after near 60 years of nightmares.
Hollywood still brought them back though with cloning in Resurrection.
Most... unneeded... sequel... ever.

I can totally see why people don't like it though which is why I was expecting a ribbing from some Mofos over having it on a Top 100 and having it in 6th place too... I didn't like it at first either as I've said.
A lot of the problems the film has is due to the studios having no trust in the David Fincher or his team of filmmakers.
But learning the history and looking at how well made it is, especially artistically and aesthetically, makes it a firm favourite of mine.

Sexy Celebrity
10-24-12, 11:58 PM
David Fincher himself doesn't even like Alien 3!

"No one hated it more than me; to this day, no one hates it more than me,"

I think it's really boring and I feel like Ripley is not herself. AT ALL. For one reason, I can't believe she shacks up with a new man so soon after all she went through in Aliens and knowing that Newt died. "Oh, well! Let's have some sex!"

I don't wanna change your mind if you really like it the most, but I find it hard to watch. Maybe there's something I'm missing?

The Rodent
10-25-12, 12:02 AM
True, Fincher hates it... mainly through the stuff he went through during production stopped him making the film he wanted to make I guess.

Have you ever seen the extended cut? It's far better than the cinematic release.

Masterman
10-25-12, 08:03 AM
I have to agree with Alien 3. I enjoyed it alot more after a more recent viewing but its not up there with the other movies in the franchise. I agree also on Ripley, they ruined her character in the 3rd movie. Ripley went from badass, to..... Erm, lame. The Sex scene totally took away how the first two movies made her out to be.

Nice list tho.

TylerDurden99
10-25-12, 08:15 AM
The biggest problem with Alien 3 is that you can feel Fincher's hate for it throughout. It's so grim, and bleak, and mean-spirited that it's sometimes hard to enjoy. The way the characters are developed and built and then killed off in the blink of an eye can be hard-goings at times, and Ripley is a bit of a downer in the film. She has nothing left in her anymore and looks she just doesn't care most of the time.

I still like the film a lot, for it's tone, visual look and suspense created by Fincher, but I can see why it's considered by fans to be the weakest of the series.

Ok... after much deliberating... I've decided I don't like how my Top 100 turned out...

Yoda said in the Shoutbox the other day, he likes to know why people change their choices so soon after making them... a couple other members also stated that I had only just recently completed the last list... so here's my reasons.

I feel that I may have rushed the list a little, just to get one done, and although the films on the list are kinda faves of mine, I don't think that all of them deserve to be in the Top 100 bracket... I have a number of films in my head that I love/like more than those that actually made it...

... plus there are a few films from recent years that I completely disregarded on how much I actually liked them, in place of olde favourites too.

Also, after pondering about those that did make the list and are going to stay in the New Top 100, I feel they aren't in the exact order that I'd really like them to be.

I know what you mean about wanting to re-arrange the order for some of them, though nowhere near as close to as many as you've shifted about. And some of them you've done a brutal job on. Signs dropping 65 places?! Ouch!

Anyway here are new additions I approve of (which is after all the most important thing! :p) - Monsters Inc, Speed, Total Recall, Repo Man, the Lethal Weapon flicks

It's a shame some have dropped so low, such as Die Hard. Oh and you completely foxed me with Turkish Delight. Never heard of that one.

I'm baffled by how many inferior (in my eyes) sequels you have above the superior (again in my eyes :D) originals. Return of the Jedi above A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back? Two Towers as the top Lord of the Rings? Curse of the Black Pearl not the top Pirates film?!!!

I also prefer Two Towers and Return Of The Kings over Fellowship. ;) As for POTC,personally I like them equally but it's quite obvious that the first is the best one.

Also,I'm planning to finally have Star Wars weekend but I'm wondering is it better to watch them by chronological order (from I to VI) or the way they were released (IV - VI and I-III).I'm thinking that the best way would be to see them as they were released because I believe there's a visible change in quality since there's ~25 years gap between the first and the last film but I wonder what do those who has seen it think? :)

Hannibal?
I love the book it's based on. Have you read it? So much better than the movie.
Jesus! That's literally the worst book I've ever read. Honestly. The worst. I even phoned up the friend who recommended it, to ask her what the hell she was thinking of when she asked me to read it and she said, and I quote, "I'm sorry. I just wanted to know if it was as bad as I thought it was." This is a woman who adored Red Dragon and Silence Of The Lambs and had been waiting for Hannibal since it'd been announced and thought it was so bad, that it had to be her that was wrong.

It's a shame some have dropped so low, such as Die Hard. Oh and you completely foxed me with Turkish Delight. Never heard of that one.

OK, Lethal Weapon 2 isn't terrible, but seeing as you have two Indiana Jones film and Predator 2 in the same set, it's actually a little low. :p:D

Also, how the hell did Die Hard With A Vengeance gain so many?!?! Have you watched it again recently? You do know you have it above Die Hard, don't you?

I'll end on a positive. It's good to see The Fifth Element going the right way. Hopefully, in your next re-shuffle, it'll disappear all together. :)

Wow the Expendables flicks were huge gainers. Knew you loved them but didn't realise it was that much! And double wow at Dredd flying all the way up to 2nd. Do you think it will remain there for a while or is it just flavour of the moment kind of thing? For example I remember Rise of the Planet of the Apes being like 5th or 6th on your list not long after its release and now its down to 28th.

Really, really like your list (I think we'd have about 25-30 films in common) although for me personally it falls off a bit in the top 10. Lethal Weapon, Robocop and Predator I love. Not really a fan of The Thing or Dark Knight, and you've really pained me with the double shot of Pegg & Frost! :D

But yeah well done mate.

Cheers JayDee! Yeah I like Dredd that much... I've seen it now like 15 times and haven't grown bored yet :D
When I had Apes in the top 10 though, that was well before I made a Top 100 lis, so it kinda got in there like you said, for being flavour of the month.

As for Pegg and Frost, Shaun and Fuzz are their best work to date and some of the funniest films I've seen too. Seriously kicked myself for not puttingthem in last time.

Snuffstuff, what can I say?... I'm an action and sci-fi fan...

... but I wouldn't say all of my picks are solely action films.
3 of my Top 10 aren't: RoboCop, The Thing and Shaun Of The Dead.
RoboCop is classed as sci-fi action, but there's a lot more to it than just guns and violence.

Damn, 15 times already for Dredd?!!! That's insane! Outside of when I was a kid I'm not sure I've ever seen a film that many times, never mind in such a short span of time

So which films dropped off the list altogether? What was the highest-placed casualty?

Watching a movie 15 times is like watching only 2 minutes of a 220 minute film for the first time in Rodent Time.

It means he's barely watched Dredd. He has to watch a movie millions of times before it's really a lot of times to Rodent. He's seen Young Guns every day of his life, but he still doesn't feel like he's seen it, yet.

JayDee
03-15-13, 10:05 PM
Aww man you dropped a lot of great films - K-Pax, Timecop, American Werewolf, First Blood, Stand by Me, Universal Soldier, Rocky. Poor Rocky! From inside your top 50 to outisde your top 100? That's harsh man! What did Stallone ever do to you?! :D

The Rodent
03-15-13, 10:13 PM
Lol! I haven't seen Young Guns every day of my life. I watched it every day from the age of 10 till I was 15 and then periodically since then.

Yeah, Rocky and Rocky Balboa... First Blood and Rambo... 4 Stallone films I like but I had them in the list for the sake of it.
It's like, if you ask someone to name a Stallone film, the bets are they'll say First Blood or Rocky.
I did the same with the last list, I put them in simply because, well, I like them... but I didn't put enough thought into whether I liked them enough to make a Favourites List and ended up dropping out the likes of the Frost and Pegg films and the other new entries.

I lived in Scotland though... there's little to do up there apart from get into trouble or watch films.
So I watched films when getting into trouble got boring.
