After watching The Dark Knight Rise's I was pretty impressed by Bane's physique and how big Tom hardy managed to get for the role. My discussion is do you think movie stars are using steroids to get these buffing body's or do you think it just hard work?. It's not just Tom hardy that ime talking about here, the list is endless of movie stars that have bulked up.

Tom Hardy looks like it's definitely done out of pure hard work(he has gone up and down over the years for various film roles), you should see him training in various videos over the years with a friend who is one of his personal trainers and talking about the diets he goes on to get that way and so on.

As for ones that do take steroids. I really don't care, they are not taking them to win/get strong for a race, they are doing it to make themselves look bigger/stronger for a film role they are already signed up for. It's their body and if they want to pump rubbish into them, their life and health.

It's hard to tell with a lot of the actors out there. I'd say there's a few that do.

Christian Bale I think is an example of someone who doesn't. He lost a ton of weight for The Machinist, then put it all back on again, plus another 30kg for Batman Begins. There's no mention of drugs, just diet, fitness training and weightlifting.

It's really tough to tell though most of the time, but I reckon Vin Diesel is on something though.

I know Arnie used them. He's admitted using them back in the 70s when Anabolic Steroids were legal in muscle competitions.

To me, when I hear the word steroids, I see a mutant like this:

He doesn't seem that big to me. In the film you can tell where they've used lighting and shadows to accentuate every curve, every groove, every line etc. That and I imagine they used makeup as well to add extra definition to his muscles. Even in Spider-Man they added muscle patterns to the Spidey suit, they know some tricks.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but equally I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.

When you've got nothing but time to work out all day long and a personal trainer to make it happen, you probably don't need the 'roids. If someone paid you 8+ figures to work out for 6 months before the role even begins, you could look like that, too!

6 months to gain 3 stone of muscle, not a chance mate.

I think we need more sources or opinions from body builders/athletes before we say what's impossible or not.

From a body building website.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy when it comes to gaining muscle. Nine times out of ten, most of us fail in the dedication department. What starts out as a carefully planned and calculated program, ends up hitting some bumps along the way.

However, even if we are dedicated (some may call it obsessed) and diligent about our nutrition, with proper training and recuperation practices, we still would not be able to add more than 1 pound of muscle in a week. That's right, only one pound a week--and this is assuming you've had a darn good week both inside and outside the gym!

Often, people believe that if they take in 3500 more calories during a week that they will be successful at packing on slabs of muscle. However, the old adage that one pound equates to 3500 calories is right for fat but NOT muscle. If you want to gain one pound of fat, then you should be taking in an extra 3500 calories a week. Now there's one way of putting on some weight!

1.71 stone of muscle in 6 months is more realistic going by calculations apparently.

I don't think Hardy used steroids. I know Charlie Sheen (who is a hell of a baseball player and was set to play college baseball) used steroids so he could throw a baseball at 91 MPH in Major League

I don't think Hardy used steroids either, neither did Bale. Both of those people spent a good hour of the day working out to fit their roles.

Why would you assume the worst about people?

Isn't is simply easier to think that, since they have no day job other than working out, that they put on the weight and muscle the legal way?

Protein Shakes + Eating Properly + Working out = Results like those of Hardy's.

(plus I am sure he has a personal coach)

Movie time is not as it seems. First off, if memory serves (and it does), Warrior was one of Hardy's latest films. He's probably quite built from that already.

Second, even if an actor has two films released months apart, the time between could be a considerable amount of time. How long of a time passed between The Fighter and The Dark Knight Rises? Have you seen Bale's physical transformation between those two films?

It could have been a year or long since Hardy has acted before starring in TDKR, no matter how long it's been since the release of his last film.

That post has nothing at all to do with the topic at hand. We have no real sense of time between films.

I did point that out back in the topic, his friend is a personal trainer to him and someone who works with him is a marine or ex marine, don't know if it's the same person but he would most definitely be pushed to work hard by a marine.

As for time, there is a lot of time waiting around for actors and actresses in the film world and plus if it's for the role they are going to be given time to work on their body for the role.

Steroids aren't illegal.

Tom said him self it took him 6 month's to get into shape! And as that article said before... If you are pushed to the limet and you do everything right you can only put 1 pound of muscle on per week.

Assuming the Protein Shakes have a lil extra oomph, then yes. Otherwise not so much.

Even if he was "that" big, they'd still use lighting, angles, color, and camera to "accentuate every curve, every groove, every line."

A friend of mine spent a good while working out with protein shakes and he put on a six pack within a month/month+half.
