Vampyr vs. McCabe and Mrs. Miller

Look, I love Dreyer and Vampyr. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it and him. He's a totally unique voice in this world of cinema. Lots of people compare him to von Trier. I know von Trier made Medea, based on a Dreyer script, but I don't think people should vote for Vampyr because they think it's a vote for von Trier too. I have a lot of problems with Altman, and McCabe, but in general, I think it's the better movie and the more-influential one.


SE7EN vs. Kind Hearts and Coronets

Two awesome movies about serial killers which I feel are far superior than the last set. I could vote for the Brit classic since I've loved it 20 years longer than Fincher's flick, but I just can't do it. Dennis Price is into specific revenge and I understand and appreciate that when it involves people who deserve it. The thing about SE7EN is that it's just so damn random. All the victims may well deserve it, but there's no specific reason why the killer picked them.

Volver vs. Jurassic Park


I suppose that both movies have to do with some form of mutations, although I don't really believe that in the context of Volver. What really matters is what the characters may believe it. I believe that Jurassic Park is Jaws lite, but damned if it doesn't carry the same weight to a newer generation. I'll never agree with that, but I can understand how the T.rex scene and Jeff Goldblum could draw its share of fans. Make sure you guys watch as many Almodovar as you can. He's great!

La Cercle Rouge vs. King Kong

I'm not sure how to compare/contrast these flicks, but I suppose both are about criminals who are willing to do whatever is necessary to get what they want. I guess you could call Carl Denham naive but he's ripped off enough people to be considered dangerous, Both the cops and crooks in Le Cercle Rouge have obviously been involved with death, but ultimately Denham kicks their ass by causing more deaths than everyone in this thread put together. Does that make King Kong the better film? Maybe not, but it definitely makes it more subversive and less romantic. Once again, watch every Melville film you can get ahold of.
