Sexy Celebrity.....does it make me gay is I thought that the male stripping scenes were the best part of the film? :p
Mike is a stripper by night and wannabe entrepreneur by day. While at a roofing gig, he meets Adam and they instantly hit it off. Mike introduces Adam is his night life, of stripping and Adam soon finds himself thrust into the wild and wacky world of male stripping. Adam's sister isn't to keen on the idea and makes Mike promise that he will take care of her brother, but the money, girls and drugs soon becomes too much of a temptation for Adam to resist.
Inspired by Channing Tatum's early life as a real male stripper, Magic Mike is an odd bag. It aims to please the female audience and yet it has a director that male audiences respond to. Steven Soderbergh is behind the lens and he gives the film a visual flare that is more or less his signature style. The film is not all about the loud, crude and overly sexual sequences involving the young (and not so young) men dancing up a storm on stage, it tries to dig deeper into the lives of these boys with Tatum as the lead anchor.
There are two big problems Magic Mike faces, the first is the running time, which is atrociously long. Running ten minutes shy of two hours, the film drags and drags in a lot of scenes that do not involve losing clothing. The reason is that the story, or lack there of, is boring. We follow two characters, Mike and Adam, a master and protégé type relationship. Tatum has never been known for his acting skills and here it is no different. He awkwardly spews out his lines and looks uncomfortable doing anything off the stage. On the stage is a different story, as his dance moves (have you seen Step-Up?) take front and centre stage. He has talent and his real life experience is clearly evident here. He was the best stripper of the bunch. Adam, played by I Am Number Four's Alex Pettyfer is a boring character that has no likability factor. Mark Walhberg's Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights was the fish out of water character that fell from grace and he did it with a schoolboy charm. Alex portrays the character as cold and unlikable.
With two lead characters that aren't very good, it seems that the rest of the strippers have to pick up the slack. Matthew McConaughey is the club owner, Dallas, who dreams of bigger and better things in Miami. He gets his chance to shine at the end and of course, spends 90% of the film with no shirt on. No stretch for him there. There is a bit of a subplot involving him and Tatum in which McConaughey more or less screws him over. It's only slightly touched upon and never drives the film. The other male strippers, involving a CSI agent, a former wrestler and a werewolf, have absolutely nothing to do in this film aside from being strippers. We get a sense that Tarzan (Kevin Nash) is too old to be doing this, but the film never bothers to do anything with his character. He seems odd and out of place. They each get their own strip scenes, mostly done in montages, but nothing more.
The stripping/dancing scenes are the most interesting aspects of the film and I fond myself bored with everything else. It tries to be more than a stripper movie, but it fails at it. It's not fun, it's not dramatic it's stuck in the middle and it seems to be an autopilot a lot of the time. I think if the film had taken more chances and tried to be darker, it could have been somewhere along the lines of Boogie Nights for the stripper industry. Instead it has to settle for a film that women in their 50's rush to go see so they can see some man butt. It's a shame because Soderbergh is such a talent, that it seems wasted here.

Did you get uncomfortable in your theater seat? Was it a packed house full of women and did the other two guys there cat fight over who was gonna sit on your lap because no other seats were available?
I have not seen Magic Mike, yet. I will eventually. Channing Tatum is hot. I like sexy striptease movies, even ones with women. I love Showgirls. It's nice to see a sexy striptease movie in theaters again, but I wouldn't want to be in a movie theater hanging out with a crowd of horny women. I'm not embarrassed, but I'd hate to feel like I'm joining in with them, especially if the stripping scenes and the movie are just blah.
Those guys are also all very smooth and the guy on the right in that picture you posted is ugly to me. It all looks like vanilla fluff. Women seeing naked men is all the rage these days, especially with shows like True Blood. I actually must say I root for the return of Elizabeth Berkley -- Showgirls 2!

Magic Mike is a Steven Soderbergh film that was inspired by true events. The star Channing Tatum was a male stripper and always wanted to do a movie about one.
He got his wish.
The film starts with Dallas (Matthew McConaughey). Discussing the rules of where you cannot touch. Than switches to Mike (Tatum) who appears to be cleaning up after a three way with two girls. The one girl who appears to be a mainstay in his life asks him about an odd piece of furniture. He tells her that he wants to have his own furniture business. Follow these two story lines.
At the construction site that he works at he meets Adam. Adam is a 19 year old who lives with his sister Brooke and lost a football scholarship due to fighting with his coach.
After Adam abandons a date with Brooke and her obnoxious boyfriend, he goes to the nearby club and spots Mike. After begging Mike lets him in. But he owes Mike a favor.
Mike uses Adam to talk to these girls to unknowingly lure them to the male strip club he works at. Once inside the club and after seeing the strippers perform, Adam is impressed.
He even gets to perform when one of the strippers is well not quite up to it. Enough to impress Dallas.
This films reminds me of boogie nights. Just not as bold. It serves as a cautionary tale. And you can tell that they actors had fun with the dance numbers.
Tatum and McConaughey give great performances and hold the film on their shoulders. This could have been a great film. If only they had been a bit more daring.

Looks like we have some homophobics here. I went with my girlfriend so it was all good. There is a scene wear this girl is naked (the only person that is actually seen naked). During that scene stand up and yell "That's hot!" so everyone knows you are not gay.

Me a homophobe? lol. I'm a huge advocate for homoerotism, it's one of my favourite past-times.
The fact that people waste time and money on this film is saddening to me, however.

I work at a movie theater so I didn't spend a dime :D.
It is a good movie. Because of Matthew McConughey's and Channing Tatum's performances though. 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Why don't you watch it since it is out and give a legit judgement. All you are saying is "well it looks like crap". BTW I thought it looked stupid too. Glad to say I was pleasantly surprised.

I mean, you're right. I shouldn't judge a film without experiencing it myself, but I would hate to spend time and money on a film that didn't leave me with even the slightest amount of mental or emotional impact. From what I've seen this movie is only a bunch of men wagging their penises around and gyrating.
What did you like about it, though? I won't use anything you say against you, I promise.

The performances made the film. I am not a fan of Matthew Mconaughey at all. But this was one of his best performances. He had a short monologue at the start of the movie where he described what the ladies couldn't touch. Not that may not seem like a big deal. But it could have been done wrong. But he nailed it. Channing Tatum did a good job too. It is a nice cautionary tale. Nothing special. But it is worth a watch.

This must have been the only Matthew McConaughey film you've seen.
Dazed and confused: Best acting job and it was his first too
A Time to Kill: He was amazing
Fool's Gold: Awful
Failure to Launch: Awful
We are Marshall: A good performance
Tropic Thunder: His role really didn't mean much. But he was okay.
Magic Mike: best performance of the whole movie.
He really has done a good job in only four maybe five films.

Magic Mike sequel confirmed!
Get ready ladies, Magic Mike might only just have come out but there will be more stipper goodness coming your way soon!
Actor Channing Tatum, has confirmed that a sequel or prequel is already in the works.
Speaking to Glamour magazine, he said: “We're working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger.”
Channing stars alongside Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello and Alex Pettyfer in the movie.
And as Channing can’t seem to get enough of stripping off, he’s also shown interest in playing a certain Mr Grey. However, he did have one condition if he was to be part of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.
When asked, he said: '1) Yes. 2) I'd only be allowed if my wife was Ana. She’s read the books so I don’t think she’d be impressed if she couldn’t be Ana!'
Ryan Gosling is currently the bookies favourite to play Grey, with Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder putting his name in the hat.
Speaking to MTV News, he said: 'I think it would be an amazing thing. One interesting thing is, by the virtue of playing (vampire) Damon for a few years, [he's] 170 plus years old, in love with an 18 year old, I officially have a lot of experience seducing younger women. I'm just saying.'
Irish actor Michael Fassbender is also linked to the role, along with True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard, who told E! Online: 'I was born to play that part.'
Maybe Channing can find them all a role in Magic Mike 2 and then we all win!

Saw this yesterday. I'm not sure who this movie is supposed to appeal to or what story its supposed to tell. Those who are wanting a parade of man flesh are sure to be disappointed, and those who wanted a story about the world of male strippers ( like I did) are going to find the movie lacking as well. The only thing we learned was that they go to a lot of sleazy parties and do a lot of ecstasy. So do a lot of people in Tampa.
We learn a little about Tatum's character. He wants to be more than a stripper and has dreams and aspirations.(that's a new one) He gets a youngster involved in the business and falls for his responsible, comparatively uptight older sister. The movie seems more about their relationship more than anything. When you get to the core of the movie, it's nothing more than a drawn out love story and the stripping is merely a backdrop.
Like TUS, I didn't understand why the character of Tarzan was never explored further. Why bring up his age and make it a point to show that he could barely do the choreography only to never address it? There are quite a few other fragments and that's not something I expect from Soderbergh.
I give it a D+ The plus is because it is fairly well acted by Tatum and Cody Horn.

Your review is spot on. I never understood McCaunaghey's sex appeal to women. In this movie, he was also boring and his character kind of cowboy cheesy.
On the other hand, Tatum does have some great moves and it's quite understandable why women would like this movie.
