Both films are about the distintegration of a life (or two) right before your eyes. One is real and one is metaphorical. Now, I'd never say that I always prefer the reality over the artificial. I certainly am one who can equate "artificial" with "artful", but even though I find almost all of von Trier's films watchable, there is just such a level of "artifice" in them that I cannot usually fully commit my emotions to them. He can't just make a movie; he seems to have to stack the deck. In the case of Bus 174 though, I believe the deck is stacked against him, and the poor kids are more interesting than the spoiled rich folk. I'm sorry if I used too many "art" words.

I don't disagree with mark f, but I'll always vote for fiction over real life ;). Von Trier's films are always a little self-conscious and calculated in some ways, while being very natural in others. Melancholia is a strange, fascinating, boring, irritating, stunning, ugly beautiful film. I'm not sure I liked it, but it left an impression on me. Bus 174 is very interesting both in the events it portrays and the way it chooses to reveal them, but about half an hour too long.
