View Full Version : How Did You Find This Site?

I am just curious how other posters found MovieForums.com.

I am a regular poster at TuffSports.com -- I joined in October and have over 1100 posts there. They also use vBulletin software, so I went to the Jelsoft Enterprises website and did a search on other posting sites I thought I might like. I found MovieForums was one of them --and the rest is history!

I am a huge sports fan but like everyone else, I also enjoy going to the movies. I may not always post here but I stop by every day to read what you folks write.

Actually, I was searching for something similar on Google, I think it was, and ran into movie forums...It was my intention originally to start my own movie discussion forum if I didn't find a decent one on the net, but I had luck :)

Ah how did I get here? Gather around kiddies and I shall tell you a tale....

Many moons ago, back in July or August I think, I was on a mission to find the directors cut of Mortal Kombat, no luck by the way, but on my journey to find it I came across Movie Forums. And it wasn't by searching, or by someone telling me, it was when I just tried seeing if it was a web site by typing in movieforums.com, and it worked. I even remember my first post. Mortal Kombat the Movie. It turned into just a friendly conversation between me and Chris. I think I even became a moderator that night, at like 1 in the morning.

;) yeah, funny how that happened, huh, chris?

i found the big boss man's site by the URL in his signature after reading a post of his in Swirve.com's Very Crappy Movie Forums.

I remember posting there! It's a shame I couldn't use an actual link there - just the text of the URL.

I still post there a bit with the URL afterwards to help promote the site. There arn't more than a handful of movie forums out there - 9 out of 10 are totally inactive for the most part.

Thanks to people like y'all, this is one of the few thriving ones. :)

I'll try to do my part in terms of trading links, buying advertising time and such sometime in 2001 to try to return the favor to all of you! :)

Let it also be known that loyal, active (and of course, knowledgable) MovieForums posters are the most likely to receive higher titles, such as official News Editors once we start posting news and reviews. :)

Commish threatened me. He said that if I didn't join "movieforums," he would break my legs. I didn't take him seriously at first...but then I found my favorite horse's head under my covers. Basically he offered me an offer I couldn't refuse. Don't mess with that guy!

Been on a lot of movie forums before this one. First, got started on SALON Table Talkers, but some boring intellectual type posters came on & started ruining threads. "To its credit, the uncomfortable feverishness of teenage menustration is captured in CARRIE, thanks to Sissy Spacek's arrested-development Medusa." Whatever.

And then I got on the New York Times, but they have only one general thread there for all movies, and it was taken over by a 55 year old art-house fanatic who can't stand any picture that makes over 4 million dollars.

Now CHUD is interesting. They seem friendly at first, but the message board is really one big exclusively male fraternity, in which movies are only peripheral. Basically, they talk about themselves. A LOT.

This forum, however, seems to strike a happy balance. Knowlegeable posters, an excellent format, and a large number of topics. By the way, I found this site when a thoughtful somebody posted the link on JoBlo. (I've been on JoBlo too, but had a problem with the upper hierarchy of Blo-ness.)

Zephyrus
03-10-01, 02:16 AM
Looks like you got really lucky!! I love this place because there are heaps of people around my age (so no 55 year olds as far as I know :)) and no boring posters. Makes me feel right at home (which is all of course a part of my conspiracy to eventually take over the forum and kick out TWT, but shhhhhh don't tell him)! :D

Yoda
03-10-01, 11:47 AM
Hadn't heard of JoBlo - I'll have to go check it out. Very glad you like it here, however. I'll try to keep the same feeling that you have now present at all times. We will be upgrading in a short while, though, so you might be surprised by a new design out of the blue one of these days.

A friend told me about this forum. Now, he's a fan like me of film but we don't get together too often (on account of how far I live) to discuss film so he recommended I join a forum. He mentioned CHUD and this one. I like this one better. Its better organized. And I like the little personal funny touches--even in the instructions like "Disable those Smilie Face Thingies" :)

I found this site by giving birth to a big ol' baby boy nearly 17 years ago, and, somewhere along the way, letting him pluck on the keyboard of my computer, then watching him eventually go his own way and start his own movie web site.

Oh, that, and he threatened to break my legs, too.

TWTAdmirerFromAfar
05-03-01, 02:08 PM
Well, I was outside TWT's window in a tree one day... and I saw him posting on this site. and I said to myself "go to that site" so I did.

TWTwannaBe
05-03-01, 04:10 PM
One time TWT went downstairs to eat his soup that i got for him, and i stumbled into his room and movieforums.com was on his computer. Immediatly i figured, hey this must be cool, and ever since i started posting on movie forums i chew a lot more gum.

OG-

I think this whole TWTwannabe deal is just a cover up for wanting to be like me. You OG-Wannabe. I know I'm your only friend Jeremy. Give it up. I'm on to you.

TWTwannaBe
05-03-01, 04:19 PM
Actually "TWTadmirierFromafar" is Jeremy. This (TWTwannabe) is his step brother (name confidential). All i can tell you about myself is that TWT is really cool. TWT seems to have a strange affection for cats, I guess that means cats are cool.

OG-
05-03-01, 04:23 PM

Austruck
05-03-01, 04:47 PM
OG, I can enlighten you a bit. I'm the mom of both TWT and TWTAdmirerFromAfar (which, yes, is Jeremy). And, yes, TWTwannabe is their stepbrother.

If it helps, the two "new" TWTs are 14 going on 15. I think this explains a lot. ;)

If it gets too thick in here, just ignore them. That's what we do at home. Not that it works. :)

TWTwannaBe
05-03-01, 05:00 PM
HEY, im not strange. And TWT is certainitly not strange, he's my step brother and he is very cool. As for you Linda... I think somebody needs some priviledges revoked for giving out my personal information (not that its true, Im actually 34). What are you talking about 14 going on 15 "explains a lot". I think its time we all learn a little bit about Austruck, She's married to Wayne She's married to Wayne, now i think that explains a lot.

Hmmm...

Emergency room is too risky. They ask questions like "How did he get that bruise?"

Freeway. Now there's an idea. Drop 'em off on I-79 somewhere and split....

I was referred by Peter (OG-), whom I met through Mark (Zweeedorf). I like how it's sort of a community here, it's not as impersonal as a lot of forums. I've stuck around for so long, I've become a wacko!

By the way, let's have a moment of silence for Zwee, who quit posting because he didn't like to be considerate of others.

I'm suprised I never found this thread.

So gather 'round children, it's high time ye learn, 'bout a hero named Homer and a devil named Burns...

Actually, I was just searching for information of Walt Disney the Facist and the rascism in his films and I'd read a few essays from the top couple of Google search results and then there was one that had discussions on it and it led me smack bang into the middle of the "Best Animated Film" thread. And that's where it begins.

This name was an alias. It's not the name or any of the variations on the name I use elsewhere on the 'net. I'm usually known as "Cat"... which would be a lot easier to type than SamsoniteDelila. Ah, hindsight.

I started posting regularly here because there are cool people, good discussions, few trolls/flamers... and a few other reasons I'll just leave off. Long story short: I'm a MoFo addict and really glad someone suggested we try and give Yoda a (friendly) hard time, a year ago.

I used a search engine. Typed in 'return of the king soundtrack audio clips', it brought me to this site which had a link to another site. If I hadn't been lazy I would of bookmarked the other site with the clips, but no I wasn't feeling particulary active. So for almost all of last December i would venture to these pages to follow a link. I slowly began to read the threads though, and several times I considered joining. A few years ago I did a search for a site that might shed some new insights for a game I was currently hooked on and stumbled onto a forum for it. It was the first forum I had ever seen and thought it was a pretty nifty thing. Yet, within time, I became bored because games come and go, and the topics became stale. So I decided to see what other forums were out there that might keep me interested for more than a month. I thought to myself, “Self: what is it that you love, would love to talk about endlessly, and never get tired of?” Sex was the answer, but my dog was watching me, so I searched for a “movie forum” <----- (actual words in google), and viola! Here I am.

Anyone wanna talk about sex? My dog’s asleep. No? Okay. :(

Anyway…I am so happy I found this place. What I love most about MoFo is that new people join, and then we school them. I know that sounds patronizing, but if you come here thinking that Gone in 60 Seconds is one of the greatest movies of all time, and one year later you’re discussing The Bicycle Thief and are completely amazed that you ever thought that Gone in 60 Seconds was anything more than a trite piece of crap movie made from excrement belonging to a sick and injured pig, well…you been schooled.

All hail MoFo! School for the ignorant cinephile!

I honestly forget. I was part of amother forum that I forget the name of now, and they were all really unbelievable art movie snobs, you know, the type of people who like nothing but indecipherable foreign films and who will put you down for liking something even remotely mainstream...my favourite quote of theirs was that "Almost Famous," which is one of my favourite movies, was okay for an entertainment film....I mean what good are movies if they DON'T entertain you?

Anyway, after that, I found MoFo and I was an unbelievable ass for a good long time, and I am surprised I was never banned. I drifted away after an EXTREMELY painful time in my life, that well, there's still reminders of on here, but oh well, life goes on, and I am back, and hopefully less of a pain.

I really like the people here, they have been very friendly and I've even talked with a few of them on AIM, and thats wicked cool. I consider y'all my friends, really. (I miss Sexy Celebrity and Mary Lo a lot.)

i used to be apart of another movie forum, but it was mostly just Horror forum. i used to love horror, but not as much now, since most horror film new releases are just horrible, and you get sort of tired of talking about the same old classic horror movies over and over again. theres only so much you can talk about the same movies. plus, everyone here is so much nicer and really welcomes new people. i seriously can't think of anyplace on the web that is so open to new people. most people are like "ew a newbie!"

this place is really unique in that way. :yup:

Good thing I really AM interested in movies.

Of all the family members he initially signed up, I think I'm the only one still left (besides him). That's either really cool, or really pathetic. Haven't decided which.

Sure, but it varies from day to day. Over the weekend, for example, there were about 15 members on throughout most of the afternoon. On weekdays, I think the peak time would be a little later, but it's not perfectly consistent.

Most times I come on here there are a few dozen members on and, like, a few *hundred* guests. Right now it says 10 members and 203 guests. I have a nice handful of forums I visit and read a lot on, but that I've never joined. I'm a "guest" at those places but a regular one.

Well, anyway, I found this site because my son made me come here. ("Mom, become a member of my site, please? Do you think Grandma will sign up too?") :) :)

This is a fairly small site, but it has the considerable advantage of being a little community. People here generally feel freer to share more personal things than people on bigger forums do, and it's resulted in some great connections between people.

I don't know what kind of standard you're using, but I've been doing this (and variations on it) for a very long time, and the turnonver here is above-average at worst, especially for its subject matter. I also don't know what other forums you're referring to, but I guarantee they either a) have higher levels of traffic to begin with, and thus more activity in general, or b) routinely prune their membership rolls.

Also, you seem to be operating under the assumption that our goals have to do with raw numbers. Maybe that's the case for some sites, but not this one. Quality comes first here; always has. If that turns off the hoards of teenagers who worship at the Alter of Keanu and have nothing of substance to say, all the better. I'll trade quantity for quality any day of the week.

Perhaps you should expand and revise the Site a little; maybe lighten up the colour scheme? Just a thought.
I'm sorry if this seems defensive, but you've been a member for a grand total of 11 days, and you're already trying to tell me how to run the place?

I've made expansions; news, DVD updates, et cetera. And you know what? The members appreciated them, but were relatively uninterested. They came here (and still do) for the intelligent discussions, not the rehashed movie news you can get on literally hundreds of other sites.

Coming in and sharing your thoughts and any constructive criticism you might have is always welcome. But complaining about activity levels in a thread on an entirely different topic and making broad, sweeping suggestions devoid of perspective to people who have been here for years is, in my opinion, rather rude.

The messenger is delivering a message from...himself. So yeah, that's who you kill in that scenario.

I know it's tough to keep people, but if you're going to take everything I say so defensively (especially when I'm trying to help) then I'll guess there's no reason to hang around.
No, it's really not tough to keep people. Like I said, I don't grant your premise. And after, I dunno, roughly 8 years of community management at roughly every rung on the totem pole, I think I'm in a position to rebut those sorts of things.

There's a line between trying to help and being downright haughty. You were (and are) on the wrong side of that line. Toss in a bunch of bizarre criticisms that wouldn't add up to anyone with any real experience running an online community (and the fact that you're posting this in a thread on a completely different topic), and the response your comments got was inevitable.

Have a good one.
You too.

I had a vision. A horse with iron wires for hair galloped across an ocean of quick sand and stopped before crushing me with its razor hoofs. The rider glided down and bestowed upon me a secret address written in dust and magic marker. I punched him and jacked his horse for its precious jewels then came here within the hour. It wasn't so much a vision as it was an acid trip invovling some homeless guy, his basket of plastic bags, and an empty parking lot. Needless to say I have his plastic bags and I wont be giving them bag, I mean back.

That's exactly why this site always has a crap load of new members signing up (they don't always stay of course) because of the words "movie forums". Its usually the first words someone will google if they are searching for something like this. It was for me too.
