Allrighty Carl Crawford do your thing. I'm lookin for a decent average and a stolen base or 2, but dont do so much that the red sox actually win the game.

So far he hit a single and came around to score. So far so good. I was a lil surprised the Bosox have Ellsbury in the leadoff with Crawford going second, id have thought it would be the other way around.

Ha! I just noticed your quotation PW. Im honored. ;)

Lance Berkmans back, and Allen Craigs batting average has cooled this last month so there may be a quandry. Craigs slugging homers well though. Never thought Id have to keep an eye on that slot. St Louis should just chuck their 2nd baseman Tyler Green, and make Craig their 2nd base guy. Thats the position he played last year till he broke his kneecap.

Chris Tillman just got crushed by the Twins, 8 runs in 2 innings. He too will be available on waivers tomorrow. Jeff Karstens #'s now will be nothing but damage control at best. Ever since I went so heavy on Rays pitchers my numbers have gone down the toilet. Must change trend....

Since we all like to feel sorry for ourselves (me too!), a conceptual question. Which makes you feel worse about a should I/shouldn't I starting pitcher decision: benching them and seeing them throw well, or playing them and seeing them get killed? Clearly the latter is worse for your team, but I'm amazed at how almost-as-bad the former feels.

rauldc14

More than often I've played a pitcher with a great matchup and they've been killed. On the contrary i've benched them against tough matchups and they've done well. I'll start them more often than not, since I'm in no danger of the innings limit. They are on my team for a reason, that reason being I think they are worthy of a roster spot.

I hate seeing a guy like Dickey get blown up. You watch someone masterfully pick apart the best line-ups a few starts in a row, and then he gets on the mound and you can tell he just isn't home that day. I feel like, when this happens, it just trashes my hopes for my team, because my "best" guy is getting destroyed. So yeah, seeing a top pitcher get creamed really hurts.

I howl the loudest when I dont slot a guy that has a great game. I feel like I failed as a coach to not slot correctly, but if they get beat up when I slot them then thats on them. :)

Hellickson vs Masterson tonight, and I got them both. I had decided to go with Jeremy since he has shown good form the last 2 starts, and Masterson got beat up for 8 runs by the Rays in their last matchup. Now Im wondering if I should go with both of them. Why? Cause Clayton Richard had 2 K's in his win today in 8.1 innings! 2! Francisco Rodriguez had 2 in his lone 9th inning close today.

I need more K's, and sadly the Rays have provided strikeouts for many pitchers this season. For example Chris Sale got 15 K's on us. Hes good, but not that good. The Rays have had an incredible ability to make good pitchers look great, bad pitchers look good, but then we beat great pitchers outright. Like Verlander who we beat twice, and Justin Masterson. I dont know what to do.

D'oh. Spot-started Wandy...matchup was good. Perfect through three and really good through four. Then completely implodes in the fifth, but by being pecked to death with tons of singles, walks, etc. So very close.

I think my team's ERA would drop half a run if I had the option of slicing a single inning off of a handful of their starts.

this is a bit of a copout perhaps, but for me i guess it depends on who killed em, or often has been teh case, how it was done.

I've been fortunate i suppose, in that the only 2 times my starters got completely slammed was Morrow and Weaver, both @ the Rangers during that 16 day stretch or so that J. Hamilton seemed to be cracken 2 homers a game every game. So in those instances, it was more a.."hey dummy what were u thinken " sorta things, which doesnt bug me near as much as :

having Your starter pitch effectively for 6 1/3 with say, 1 earned run allowed, but with his team up by 5. So the ballclubs relief pitchers are all weary from the starter that got blown up in the 2nd inning the day before or whatever, so my guy is asked to log as many innings as he can.

And then it happens. A lil squibber that splits the infield, a seeing eye flare that drops, a couple of walks maybe, and then a homer. Yeah its a team game and all that, and blah blah blah, but fantasy wise, thats just a killer. That very situation seemed to happen to me, like everytime i streamed a spot starter in the first month, and this was totally cherry picking the opponent ( padres, mariners, cubs etc.)

Having said that, if i dont start a guy and he pitches lights out, all things being equal, that stings, stings bad.

Equally crappy is when u slot your lineup, the team scratches him, and he comes on as a pinch hitter and goes 0-1, bubye avg for the day, thanks a bunch. (sure if he goes 1-1 the reverse is true, but when that happens, its because we are brilliant awesome managers dontcha know :D )

Or i bench a guy who is a career sub .150 hitter against lefties, and he ends up getten walked twice and steals 4 bases, which happened to me earlier in the week.

that shat drives me mental.

Tongo, did you really group Verlander and MASTERSON as "great pitchers" in your comments above? Masterson isn't anywhere near the level of Verlander. Not even close. Definitely not a great pitcher, and never really has been.

Also - calling shenanigans on the waiver manipulation. Why would you pick up a claim (keeping others off a pitcher), then wait just enough time to drop him so he goes on waivers again, without ever using him at all to play? People stream players all the time, but they actually slot them when they pick them up, using them to get points.

Seems fishy!

It might loook that way, but in actuality I was wishy-washy, and have picked up and dropped so many pitchers Im not 100% sure which instance youre speaking of. This last time I had dropped Jarrod Parker for Milone, then regretted it. So since nobody picked Parker up on waivers -whew!- I nabbed him again.

TONGO

There! I finally figured out my backup pitcher strategy for this week. Decided to go with Collmenter, Homer Baily, and Leake as all 3 pitch vs the Houston Astros. whew. Baily has a matchup with the Brewers tonight but on the pine he'll stay as they got 13 hits off him in their last meeting. He'll face the Astros his next game.

Sedai
07-20-12, 04:05 PM
Haha nice. The Twins and Astros have been great for pitchers this year. I streamed a chump from the orioles last night, and even though he looked bad at the start, he eventually got under control and locked the Twins down to give me a win and a few more Ks on the week.

I'm sitting both Dempster vs teh Cards and Weaver vs the Rangers, so this will be tested.

My thinking is law of averages dictates that Dempster is gonna get rocked eventually, why risk his last start with teh Dextroyas

and as for Weaver, as much as i love him, its the Rangers.

DexterRiley

Ricky Romero = back on Dex's radar.

Sonar is more accurate.

Yeah so anyway, I benched both Weaver and Dempster, and really the results were terrific.

Dempster did get whacked about a bit, which he was due for, and Weaver displayed why he is in the conversation for Cy Young.

Rangers lineup skerred me, but now i know i can slot him in against anyone, now that hes excorsised that demon of getten shellacked earlier.

oh and Flash, activate Kemp for cripes sake already.

Oof, hadn't seen that. Wow.

Still afraid of me, eh, even 40 points back? ;D

I didn't have particularly great luck; Sabathia pitched pretty well but the Yanks blew the save and he missed the win. Oh well. Pitchers were solid, though, and the team average keeps climbing. I'll be genuinely surprised if I don't run away with that category. Guess I should trade some of the excess there, even.

Slow but steady progress since the break. Might have a real second half gem on my hands with Sheets, too. We'll see.

DexterRiley
07-22-12, 08:55 PM
I wasnt that worried, but with Dionne, Tongs' buddy and Vonny not bothering to set their lineups half the time, the logjam in many a category will be less challenging.

Got to hand it to Dexter for being so strong on pitching, and his only ace was Weaver. As for Toronto Im not looking forward to putting my new A's pitchers up against them. They just cranked out 15 runs without Bautista!? :nope: Pineride!

Marks a rock. I still think hes the one to beat.

Yodas roster has to come thru for him eventually. When it finally does, and if it does suddenly like Dexters did (yeah the Topes have that potential) then I think Chris will float in a relieful glee.

I see Adams Chevelles eventually sliding further.

Zimmermans rocking it for PWs Roiders right now, and I think it possible Pujols will have a megasurge sometime.

If you look at the last 30 days for Sedais Clowns pitching, a staggering comeback in that dept for Mikes squad.

As for me I will hurt myself less with bad pitching matchups, and have more cushion for the future with Weaver. That sounds small but its huge. Pitching is underated, and my crap pitching was hurting me more than anyone elses production. If that has ended, I will whoop you all :)

Well, it's the team that was in last at the beginning of July, that has now decide to rocket up (6th currently, though nipping at Tongs heels). Watch out, folks. TONGO
08-11-12, 01:03 AM
Ha! Yeah I said no to him. Chase Headleys gonna be a constant on your roster. 3rd is a lonely position for talent. Cling to him :yup:

Picked up new Dodger aquisition Joe Blanton, and nervous even though hes pitching against the fish. Blantons a competent strikeout pitcher, his ERA is 2.79 this past month, has a good team backing him up now, but hes far from indestructible. His season ERA is 4.52, and the Marlins have averaged 8 hits a game off him.

Hoping Albert Pujols continues at this last months pace healthily till seasons end. His "pop" will be welcome, but Ive had a couple of good days without him. With him, plus Ellsbury and Longo, I may go on a surge and finally break into the "big boys club" with Dex and Mark. Its possible as this is the first time Ive had first round picks on my roster all season.

Yeah, ditto.

Check this out: my pitching has been awesome in the second half and has come all the way back, basically. But now my offense has gone down (though not as much). My lineup still looks sick on paper, but apparently the bigger names have slumped at the wrong time and/or gotten injured (losing Votto was huge). So now my pitching is getting me more points than my hitting, amazingly.

But yeah, I had the narrative down months ago: dug myself too deep a hole. A few more weeks and I think I'd have been able to dig myself out of it completely, but I'm just gonna run out of time, most likely. Nice that it still started to happen, though. Its so weird really. I was in the bottem third for most of the first month, and then Chevelles stumbled a bit, Matt Kemp got hurt, and i strung together ridiculous days at the plate for 8 or 9 straight, with David Ortiz hitting at a completely unsustainable .500 clip.

Sure i had a plan and it came together but man oh man, i never thought it would happen in such a quick fashion what with all the moons alignen just so.

Good job, Dex! I am struggling to keep third for 2 more days! I have Dickey (today), Verlander and Morrow (tomorrow) still to go, so we shall see what happens.

This is it! MIL went and pulled Gallardo for his final start, so I went ahead and slotted the rook they are starting instead. Mistake? Time will tell! Not much time...as the season ends in mere hours....

Will Sedai keep 3rd for the bronze??

You probably will.

I guess I should be happy; my pitching's come all the way back. It's top five every pitching category and the ERA that was over 5 for something like half the year's all the way down to 3.80. But my offense fell off in the second half. Looks more and more like the Votto injury really killed me; missed that production, and he hasn't been the same since coming back, either, so I basically lost half a season from one of the 4 or 5 best hitters in the game. Combine that with Upton and Haren both falling off, and there was just no way. You have to be good to win, but you also have to dodge those kinds of injuries and surprises, to say nothing of 3 or 4 of them.

Anyway, a challenging season, but under the circumstances I guess I can't be too displeased with third or fourth. :)

Yep, I feel the same. I had serious pitching problems early, and I decided that I would concentrate on really learning how to work the roster with a specific goal in mind for the season (making my pitching better). I feel like I achieved my goal, although i also lost a bit of offense along the way. Still, I don't see those 1s and 2s I had for points in the pitching categories anymore, so I think I learned something along the way.

Congrats, Dex! I'm not sure what else to say. I waited too long to try to gain in the offensive categories I could have, and my pitching was good, but overall I couldn't ever get much higher with the pitching because it was TOO good. I kept thinking the Wins would come, but even that last week, they never showed. Next year, I'll have to pick up a little more sock, but not at the price of my pitching?!? It's a fine line to walk. Congrats to the DEXTROYAS!

A good season!

(Did I mention I took bronze?) ;)

Yes, yes....thank you all MoFos! This is a great honor. I am also glad to be part of the experimental DVD betting system that states the following:

"All players will send a DVD to the third place winner this year. Forget first, that guy already has DVDs from football."

Congrats Dex!

Some tightening late season, predictably, but actually fairly little drama overall. I think I've just given you all a warped view of Roto, because it's fairly unusual for two teams to sit on top all year like that, particularly in a league this engaged. But then, we did have a few owners who were largely absent, so we need some tweaking. But I thought it went well and am looking forward to next year already. :)

And yes, congrats to Mike for hanging onto third, he said reluctantly.

Yeah I was hoping to catch up with Dexter, but his 2-3 week surge bumped him so high in points it sustained him for 2 months after. I went into a nasty dip for a good month there.

Really thought Mark was gonna overtake Dex as his pitching made his numbers strong and steady, but he never got the offensive pop necessary. Cargo going down was probably the last nail in the coffin.

Really am looking forward to next year, and am bummed the Rays missed the playoffs. They beat themselves with the atrocious hitting. I guess that Miguel Cabrera being ranked 1st the last 2 years in FBB was spot-on after all.

Great win again Tim. It was bound to happen as you have the smarts, and dillegence to win a league. Seds and PW are very due. :yup:

Let me go on the record here and now, Mike can finish 3rd next year as well.

Days of future past indeed
