View Full Version : The MoFo Millenium Top 100

Brodinski
01-03-12, 02:21 PM
Hello all,

I promised you guys an announcement soon in another thread and here it is. It's been almost a year and a half now since Badger started his MoFo all-time Top 100 countdown. Most of the regulars here know it was a smashing success: over 40 members sent in their all-time Top 25 and the Top 100 thread counts an impressive 1,559 posts. So, I, Badger and Yoda figured it was time for another Top 100 in the similar vein, but with one important difference:

The films you can put into your Top 25 must be those that were released starting from 01-01-2000 up until and including 12-31-2011. The release dates that we'll take are the USA ones. So, if a film was released in your home country in, say, February 2000, but it was already released in the USA in December 1999, then you can't nominate it. This 'rule' is installed merely so that everyone is clear on which films they can and cannot put in their Top 25.
This choice was made by myself and Yoda for several reasons. First of all, a lot of members on this board are fairly young and thus, chances are that they've pretty much only watched contemporary films, bar some ultimate classics. So, if we make a Top 100 with only contemporary films in it, there's a good possibility that it will spark more discussion, because more members have watched the films that appear on it.

A second consequence of limiting the timespan from 2000-2011 is that not only the most well-known and critically-acclaimed Hollywood films of the millenium will appear on the list, but also some lesser known gems and 'foreign' releases will find their way onto the list, possibly even very high up. In that way, we'll get a) many surprises on the list and b) the MoFo members might discover some new films that they simply hadn't even heard of.

The last and final argument in favor of the Millenium Top 100 is that it will be even more unpredictable as the MoFo Top 100. Yes, there were some surprises on the MoFo Top 100, but pretty much everyone expected either Pulp Fiction or The Godfather to win and a lot of people had a good idea of what the top 10 would look like. As far as I can tell, there's no real frontrunner for # 1 in the Millenium Top 100, let alone a clear view of what the top 10 would look like.

Hoping to have all of you won over by now :D, the Millenium Top 100 will be created as follows:

1) As many members as possible send in their personal Top 25 of 2000-2011. This can be done from as of right now until June 2011. Points will be allocated like this: # 1 = 25 points; # 2 = 24 points and so on.

2) New members can send in their Top 25 as soon as they've been on the MoFo for one month. This measure is taken so that the list isn't influenced by members who've been on here for a week and then pack their bags and never come back. If we get too many of such lists, the Top 100 wouldn't be really representative of the MoFo's taste.

3) Films that are part of a series (Kill Bill, LOTR, Harry Potter,...) must be regarded as SEPARATE films. It is not permitted to submit an entire trilogy as one entry.

4) All Top 25s must be sent to me via PM. Don't bother sending in a Top 100, because only the 25 first films will receive points.

5) In July, I will jot up the scores via Excel.

6) The MoFo Millenium Top 100 countdown thread will be posted mid-August, early September. If it would be the case that I don't have enough spare time or am on holiday, the countdown will be continued by either Badger of Yoda.

Well, that's all I have to say for now. I hope each and everyone of you will send in your Top 25 of the millenium so that we have a big pool of lists to create the MoFo Millenium Top 100 from. If you have any questions or comments, you can always post them here or simply PM me.

My first big - and maybe stupid - question: Do we count The Lord of the Rings as a single title or three separate titles? It is obviously three individual films, but is often counted as a whole on such lists.

TheUsualSuspect
01-03-12, 03:19 PM
If I recall Fight Club was the #1 film the first time we did the mofo top 100. o I suspect it will be top 2 this time around.

Brodinski
01-03-12, 03:32 PM
@ MadMikeyD: I would personally consider them to be 3 separate films, because they were released as such. The Harry Potter movie series aren't considered as one huge film either. Yoda on the other hand prefers to consider the LOTR Trilogy as one film, because they were filmed at the same time and because when judging them as separate films, they might be badly represented on the Top 100, i.e. too low because they will snatch points off each other. I'll leave this open to discussion for now.

@ TUS: Fight Club was released in 1999, so no dice ;).

JayDee
01-03-12, 04:51 PM
Like the idea of this list. Like you said Brodinski should make it quite interesting.

And I would consider the Lord of the Rings trilogy to be just one movie. But then that's only so I can submit 24 other films instead of 22!!! :D

I could send the list right now but will wait a while and try and see more films from this century first.

PS - Just so I and others know is it just films whose original release was between those dates? For example would the 3D version of The Lion King count or not? Or any other similar examples

Brodinski
01-03-12, 05:01 PM
Yeah, the original release date must be between 01-01-2000 and 12-31-2011. So The Lion King 3D and other re-releases can't be put on your list.

JayDee
01-03-12, 05:05 PM
I assumed not but just wanted to check so both myself and others were clear.

This. Is. Awesome. Very cool, I'll definitely be catching up on some contemporary classics that I've been meaning to see.

I wish i'd made top of year lists starting since 2000 :(

Maybe someone with some time could hunt down the respective threads for individual year discussion to spark ideas for members.... i.e. me

Is there any emphasis on an objective or subjective list or, as I imagine, entirely at our own disgression

Sexy Celebrity

Personally, I don't like the timing. You announce something like this and the results won't be shown until July? I understand it gives people time to see all they wanna see from 2011, but, sheesh, Brodinski, you are a movie dominatrix from Hell. That's a long time until you'll allow everybody to get off.

Or if you were really committed you could look at every film released since 2000! :D

Lord of the Rings. That's what's gonna win. Oops, I should have used spoiler tags. Oh, well.

^I certainly hope not.

I'll have to give this some thought and turn in my list. Chances are my top five or so will be the same as they've been for ages, but the rest may change. Also I need to watch some more films from the last decade, though that may be a bit of a challenge since I've cancelled my Netflix account.

Hmm, Miss Vicky. I wonder if I might put I'm Still Here on my list. It's certainly unique - I think.

Hmm, Miss Vicky. I wonder if I might put I'm Still Here on my list. It's certainly unique - I think.

Unique? Yes. Among the best of the last decade? I don't know. I'll have to rewatch it. Spent the whole movie just mouthing the words "What the f***?" the first couple times through.

My list will definitely be including at least 3 Phoenix movies, maybe more.

Oh, God, if it's not The Lord of the Rings, it'll be Amelie.

Again, I certainly hope not.

MadMikeyD
01-03-12, 09:37 PM
Well, being a list of the top 100 films from only the last 12 years, I'm wouldn't be suprised to see either Lord of the Rings as a whole or one of the individual films (depending on how they're counted) take the top spot.

HitchFan97
01-03-12, 10:01 PM
Lord of the Rings is certainly a likely candidate. Others that I would expect to see rank very highly include Memento, Eternal Sunshine, The Departed, Amelie, Mulholland Drive, The Dark Knight, City of God, Requiem For A Dream, and There Will Be Blood. That's probably a pretty accurate lineup for the top 10, actually.

Sexy Celebrity

My early, rough, ridiculous Top 25 of the Millenium (not gonna send in an official ballot until June because there's still a lot I might end up seeing):

1. Ghost World
2. Adaptation
3. Kill Bill (can both volumes count as one movie?)
4. The Town
5. Black Swan
6. Brothers
7. No Country for Old Men
8. Brokeback Mountain
9. Observe & Report
10. Little Miss Sunshine
11. Cloverfield
12. The Dark Knight
13. Synecdoche, New York
14. Superbad
15. Source Code
16. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
17. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
18. Spiderman 2
19. Signs
20. The Matrix Reloaded
21. Bruno
22. Precious
23. Up
24. Wonder Boys
25. The Help

MadMikeyD
01-03-12, 10:13 PM
If LotR counts as one I would say Kill Bill would also. That may be an arguement against it though. It becomes "where do you draw the line?"

Only one Phoenix movie and one Pixar movie? :(

I didn't know you were so fond of Ghost World. Excellent movie. Just rewatched it the other day in fact. Not sure if it'll make my top 25 though.

I like Joaquin, but I'm a Jake Gyllenhaal man. And Up is largely boring, but it manages to have some strong parts. Some of the films I listed I'm not even totally sure about (Lemony Snicket, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) -- I know I've seen them a lot and I have good memories of them, but it's been years since I saw them.

Ghost World, to me, is the millenium. I would love for it to win, but I'm pretty sure it won't.

01-03-12, 10:29 PM
Kill Bill was one film split into two, whereas the Rings are three seperate films which tell one story. Kill Bill could be one choice, but the Rings should one each.

Skepsis93
01-03-12, 10:39 PM
Personally, I'd say we should be separating movies in a series. It really does end up being a question of where you can draw the line.

I mean, I happen to much prefer the first Kill Bill over the second, and I'd prefer to differentiate the two. Just an example.

i'm looking forward to this, but gosh, we have to wait six months? what if this thread gets lost in the shuffle between now and then and some of the regs who haven't been around lately (Caitlyn, Destiny, etc) miss it?

Miss Vicky
01-03-12, 11:09 PM
On the subject of film series: I think it's fine to lump them all together (provided that all films in the series were released during or after 2000) or to list them individually. However, I think a decision needs to be made one way or the other and be applied to all film series, not just a select few. Otherwise I think it could make voting for and arranging the list rather confusing.

in case anyone wanted an official 'best of' list as a starting point of what they haven't seen, here's IMDB's Top 50 movies of the 00's (that's 2000-2009, specifically), for starters.

LoTR I can see both arguments but each Kill Bill varies so drastically stylistically they're their own entities imo.

Holden Pike
01-04-12, 08:15 AM
You gotta pick each film separately, not lump a series or trilogy or even a duo together. If you want to list all three LOTR movies, more power to you, but one at a time. You like Harry Potter? Great, there are eight potential slots for you.

Turned in my list: two Lars von Triers, two David Finchers, three scripted by Charlie Kaufman, and seven that primarily use a language other than English. And Sexy and I only have four overlaps.

Tyler1
01-04-12, 08:32 AM
Shouldnt we all post our lists on some other thread? i dont want to wait till July before the mystery is revealed.

and seven that primarily use a language other than English.

Uhhh.. I have seventeen non-english movies... out of twenty five.

Yoda
01-04-12, 09:17 AM
My argument on LOTR being lumped together is twofold. Ya'll can tell me what you think:

1) It was filmed as one and only released separately. It is one "production," which sets it apart from, say, the Harry Potter series.

2) The point of these lists is to produce an accurate representation of what people think of the films of this decade. Splitting LOTR up will almost certainly lead to it being lower than is truly indicative of how beloved it is by most of us. And indicating how beloved the films on this list are is the entire point.

I think that second point is really all that matters. Which will place it in a ranking more in line with how much most of us like it: by splitting its vote, or consolidating it? Seems like it'd definitely be the latter. And I think the first point provides us with a good way of drawing the line.

MadMikeyD
01-04-12, 10:20 AM
I can agree with Lord of the Rings being counted as one entity. However, I think the same argument then applies also to Kill Bill and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, since it's my understanding they were also filmed as one but split up for release. Those three would be all I can think it can be applied to, though. Of course there may be others I'm not aware of, and if there are, it certainly diminishes the argument.

Yoda
01-04-12, 11:07 AM
Yeah, I'd agree about those other two examples, as well.

linespalsy
01-04-12, 11:48 AM
I've sent mine in. 9 non-English movies, and 5-6 more British or international English-language productions. 2 that I've seen for the first time in the last 6 months. The bottom 5 or so were all surprises to me and might have changed several times between now and the deadline. 7 are on my top-100 (+12) of all time, and a few others will likely be added to it eventually.

I have 4 overlaps with Holden's Top 25 of 2000-2009 (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=21604&highlight=decade) with a couple others that almost made mine.

No overlaps with Sexy Celebrity but he also has 2 or 3 that I almost picked.

Holden Pike
01-04-12, 11:55 AM
Frankly, I don't rate all three of the LOTR films equally. I think Fellowship is superior to the other two, and I would have The Two Towers down much further than the first and third installments. So by averaging them together and combining them as one, you're also disallowing geeks to, well...be geeks. I think it's much more interesting to find out, at least among the MoFo contingent, which of the three is The Empire Strikes Back, to see if there is one true film that places above the others.

And perhaps mostly, it just feels like a way to cheat and get two extra slots. I say if you love all three parts of LOTR, use three precious places on your list.

And yes, "precious" was intentional. :D

Yoda
01-04-12, 12:06 PM
I guess it comes down to what you feel the list is "for," then: is it "for" the process of submitting our entries (hence the emphasis on slots as a precious commodity), or is it "for" the creation of a list that best summarizes the best films of the decade? For me, it's the latter, so that's why I prefer combining them. If someone else thinks it's more about the former, then it makes sense that they'd rather break them up.

Obviously, it's not my game and not my call. That's how I'd roll if it was, but whatever's decided, I'll naturally go with.

Sexy Celebrity
01-04-12, 12:11 PM
I say don't waste a slot on something you know will never win. If the film is really, really, really that important to you, maybe, but if it's something you know nobody else is gonna vote for and you can live without including it -- ditch the bitch.

MadMikeyD
01-04-12, 12:11 PM

Yeah, I'm prepared either way. And I agree with Holden that The Two Towers is the weakest of the three individual pictures, but give The Return of the King a slight edge over The Fellowship of the Ring.

Due to peer pressure, I sent in my list to Brodinski. I changed some:

1. Ghost World
2. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
3. Brokeback Mountain
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings
5. Inception
6. Spiderman 2
7. No Country for Old Men
8. Black Swan
9. The Town
10. Wonder Boys
11. The Help
12. Transamerica
13. Brothers
14. Precious
15. The Dark Knight
16. Up
17. Signs
18. Observe and Report
19. Sideways
20. Source Code
21. Adaptation
22. Jarhead
23. Little Miss Sunshine
24. Kill Bill: Volume 2
25. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

MadMikeyD

If several such lists are already coming in viewing Lord of the Rings, Kill Bill and such as separate films, it would probably be best to go that way with it.

Sexy Celebrity
01-04-12, 01:10 PM
A movie's a movie. If you hated Kill Bill: Volume 1 when it was released maybe you didn't bother seeing Volume 2, which you possibly could have liked more. Don't separate your movie into pieces if you want it all to be viewed as one entity. People do have their preferences. I'm one sexy person, but if a cannibal chopped me up and put me in a refrigerator and ate me over the course of a week, he might rate my right leg as being better than my left leg, my head better than my butt, etc.

ash_is_the_gal

i would rather see a specific film from the LOTR trilogy rather than lumping it all into one. It's like Holden said: if you love it so much, use up 3 slots. i think people will be more honest of how they rate those films if they're separate, even if that means it's lower.

TheUsualSuspect

I assume Brodinski will just pick and we'll all abide by whichever way it goes.

You'll all see how wrong you are when LOTR finishes, like, way too low and stuff and future generations will think we didn't like it that much. WHATEVER!

I've drawn up my current top 25 but won't submit until nearer the closing date to give me a chance to catch up on unseen films and revisit others for repeat viewings

Though if it's decided that Lord of the Rings is 3 seperate entries I'm going to have a hell of a time deciding where each would go. I think RotK is the 'best' of the three, but Fellowship might be my favourite. Tough to call

Others that I think could challenge for a top 10 spot include Inception and Wall-e. And I think the surprise of the list could be Super. While I've not seen it on many people's top 10/100 lists so far any time it has appeared it has been right up at the top

Ok guys, thanks very much for all your comments so far and big thanks to linepalsy, Holden and SC who've already sent in their list.

Looking over the thread, I see the majority of people prefer separate films to just be regarded as such, and like I said earlier, I'm of that mind as well. So, films must be submitted individually and NOT as a series. I'll also put this up in my first post, so that it's clear for all.

I'll read this thread more into detail during the weekend when I've got more spare time.

Memories Of Murder
The Lives Of Others
Amelie

Wow! Either I missed a lot of something in Memories Of Murder or you just love that film. I liked it, but it's not a patch on the other two (much lower) I've left from your list, IMO.

Also, I agree with TUS. While I understand why people are posting their lists, it makes the overall list a little redundant.

 I really like Memories Of Murder. It's my favourite Korean film, and I feel that i need to have at least one (eventually i settled for 2 korean films, both by Bong Joon-ho) on my list. Never really liked Oldboy. Memories Of Murder is an astounding serial killer movie, the best i've seen. Yes, better than Zodiac imho.

As for The Lives Of Others, its great but not as re-watchable as Memories. Initially i wanted to have Downfall or Head-on, both are great films as well.

And lastly, Amelie. It's still pretty high on my list. The other French film is Cache, which i very much prefer.

Tyler1
01-05-12, 06:22 AM
I feel that i should give an short explanation for my top 10. Everyone's just gonna submit their lists quietly. :p

1. Mulholland Drive

from my top 50 thread:

Lynch takes two simple concepts of dreams and reality, and draws up a complex relationship between them. He merges them together, then dissects them, then attempts to turn them into each other. And if that is not enough, he confuses us further by not establishing which is which in the first place. This is the cinematic equivalent of the ultimate Rubik’s cube.

2. Spirited Away

Miyazaki's mind is so creative, so full of youthful ideas. This film is pure magic, and i enjoyed immersing myself into Miyazaki's endlessly expressive world.

3. Memories Of Murder

Memories of Murder offers something which all other murder suspense films fail to offer - an in-depth character study. The most fulfilling message from Memories of Murder is that nothing is as what it seems; in our crazed and insatiable pursuit for knowledge and justice, we find ourselves plunging deeper into the unknown... Just when we are about to think that everything is clear, all that we have known is suddenly torn asunder.

4. Still Walking

This is the single greatest film i've seen which has emerged over the past few years. Quiet, beguiling, charming and utterly subtle. The Japanese sure know how to make quality family drama. Depicting the events of a family over the course of one day, Still Walking is a refreshing respite from the unnecessary violence/ action movies of recent years.

5. Werckmeister Harmonies

Audacious and uncompromising. Deliberately slow but effective film about human desperation in dark times. And an unseen, unfathomable evil that pervades every frame, threatening to engulf the viewer.

6. Yi Yi

Edward Yang does it again! A masterpiece which is insightful and profoundly humane in depicting the struggles of a modern Taiwanese family. The ending is one of the best in cinema, and it will rip your heart to shreds.

7. Wall-E

As a big fan of 2001, Wall-e is both a humble homage and an indictment of the way humans take advantage of our environment and technology. The visuals are ground-breaking and this may be the only dystopian movie for kids.

8. Inglorious Basterds

I thought Tarantino was basking in his fame after Pulp Fiction with nothing interesting to say in his subsequent films. Inglorious Basterds won me over. The dialogue is so well done that only Tarantino could pull off minutes of continuous talking and at the same time maintain or even heighten the tension of the scene.

9. City Of God

There's another great movie about the slums of Brazil and that is Pixote. City Of God is the MTV-style Goodfellas of South America, and one of the reasons why I continue to explore foreign cinema with such passion.

10. Lord Of The Rings: FoTR

A movie blockbuster of epic, epic, EPIC scale that I seriously doubt if Hollywood can repeat in the future. Middle Earth never looked so fascinating... I wish this film (and trilogy) could go on for hours and hours and never stop.

HitchFan97

Thus far, the top 10 looks something like this:

1. Mulholland Drive
2. The Dark Knight
3. The Departed
4. Zodiac
5. The Social Network
6. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
7. Inglourious Basterds
8. Toy Story 3
9. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
10. Inception

Again, LOTS of interesting and acclaimed movies to catch up on. Off the top of my head, there's LOTR, Mystic River, There Will Be Blood, Inland Empire, Million Dollar Baby, Pan's Labyrinth, City of God, and anything by Aronofosky.

Chicago
Donnie Darko
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Finding Nemo
Hard Candy
Inglorious Basterds

I myself have drawn up a shortlist of 35 films, but I've still got some to watch of 2010 and 2011 before I can make an informed choice.

If you want some more inspiration, here are some Best of the Year lists that were created by MoFo members: Tyler Durden's (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=24310&highlight=year), Ludinator's (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=24204&highlight=year) and my own (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=23744&highlight=year). 3. Pan's Labyrinth
4. Lady Vengeance
5. Dancer in the Dark
6. Spring Summer Autumn Winter...and Spring
7. Amelie
8. Between The Folds

What do you think about Almodovar's Talk To Her? Is it one of the best of the decade, as many cineastes claim it to be?

Good to see someone liking Tsai Ming Liang. I'm not a really big fan of his, I prefer Hou and Yang. Tsai's films are pretty much hit or miss for me. The Hole and Goodbye Dragon Inn are the 2 Tsai films I love. The Hole is my fav Tsai. Didnt like the rest i've seen from him.

Tyler1
01-14-12, 10:13 PM
^ You mean the two other leading players of Taiwanese New Wave- Edward Yang and Hou Hsiao Hsien? Tsai's films sometimes are too minimalist for my liking. But The Hole is really, really good with memorable musical numbers.

i just realized a flaw in my logic of catching up on new movies before submitting a list... sometimes when i've just watched something and really enjoy it, my feelings would boost the rating i'd normally give it. i think i need time to let movies sink in before they settle into their proper place on the potential list. i won't have much time for this deadline, though, so now i'm wondering if i should refrain from adding any films to the list that i have only just watched.

either way it won't be accurate. but i guess it's practically impossible to make an accurate list, anyway, since my feelings towards these things never seems to be ever-present.

I say you should just put in the films you think are best. There's at least 10 films on my provisional top 35 that imo have little chance of making the top 100. Besides, if we get a healthy pool of films (say over 300-400 in total), then there's not too bad of a shot that one of those unlikely films does make it to the top 100. Only 2 or 3 people have to put it in their top 5 before it makes top 90-100 I reckon...

I watched Submarine last night which has only made me less sure about my list. I've narrowed it down to 29. I have my top 10 sorted, it's the next 15 giving me trouble.

My problem is deciding whether my favourite movies are the ones I've seen once or twice which really impressed me (City of God, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, Dancer In the Dark), or the ones I know are a bit cheesy but enjoy watching multiple times (Stardust, Latter Days, Sherlock Holmes). And while I don't quite like the idea of tactical voting, and the almost certain knowledge that nobody else will vote for my number one film doesn't deter me from adding it to my list, I do wonder whether it's a waste to put something in at 25 that isn't going to get any other votes when there are just so many films I want to give points to.

So is the "official release date" basically a few days after the end of this month or, like immediately after this month.

All of that information can be found in my thread starting post.

Don't really need to do too much harrassing really, a lot of people have already confirmed me they'd send in a list. There's some people I haven't heard of yet, I'll PM them this week.

I really need to get round to watching "Mulholland Drive" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

They seem to be at the pinnacle of a lot of millenium lists.

Not going to alter my 25 though unless I somehow watch either of the above before June 30th, and I'm literally blown away.

HitchFan97

Crunch time for me. This week alone I've managed to see Donnie Darko, Brick, and There Will Be Blood. If you check my favorite movies tab, you'll see I was absolutely blown away by that last one. It will top my list.

Same here. I like it enough, but it's easily one of Anderson's weakest films, and while Daniel Day-Lewis is brilliant as Plainview, I found his performance in Gangs Of New York much more engaging, powerful and intense (and I'm not even a big fan of THAT movie, either).

Tyler1
06-11-12, 12:52 AM
And I thought TWBB fizzled out toward the end. Scenes like the final conversation with his son and the murder at the bowling lane detracted too much from the story. However, the first half of the movie is a masterpiece, until Plainview sent his son off.

I'm not trying to be a pain but why the long wait for the thread to start?

From the end of June to mid August is like 50 days. Surely it can't be such a task that it takes that long to jot up the scores and start posting the resluts. Unless I'm missing something.

Again I'm not trying to be a A****.

Perhaps the reason for the delay is that you will be visiting the Cinema daily around that time for repeated viewings of TDKR.

If we are talking about the 10 most accomplished films that seek to expand the medium instead of using it then I can most objectively pen it down to:

Cache Michael Hanake 2005
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind Michel Gondry, 2004
Millennium Actress Satoshi Kon, 2001
Mulholland Drive David Lynch, 2001
On The Occasion of Remembering The Turning Gate Hong Sang Soo, 2002
Russian Ark Aleksandr Sokurov, 2002
Synecdoche, New York Charlie Kaufman, 2008
Werckmeister Harmonies Bela Tarr, 2000
Yi Yi Edward Yang, 2000
You, The Living Roy Anderson, 2007

But of course its also about my favourites and while a couple of the above films did not make the list, others like Save The Green Planet, Black Dynamite, Red Cliff, Pan's Labyrinth, Inglorious Basterds, Kung Fu Hustle and Tucker & Dale VS Evil were eventually included because they left such a big impression on me.

One movie that I regretted not including into the final list was Max Manus, and that was only because I watched it after submitting the list.

So... here's the final list if anybody's curious:

Mulholland Drive
Spirited Away
Talk To Her
Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring
Werckmeister Harmonies
Synecdoche, New York
Inglorious Basterds
Memories Of Murder
Pan's Labyrinth
The Skin I Live In
Save The Green Planet
Red Cliff
Gladiator
City Of God
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... And Spring
Downfall
Kung Fu Hustle
Goodbye Dragon Inn
Eternal Sunshine On The Spotless Mind
Dancer In The Dark
Wall-E
Yi Yi
Cache
Black Dynamite
Tucker & Dale Vs Evil

I will never get people calling a movie that won best picture crap. Same with Crash. It may be crap TO YOU. But it is good to he general public.

For example I did not like Burn After Reading. But it got a lot of good reviews. So I will not call it crap. Maybe I just missed the boat. Roger Ebert gave The Usual Suspects 1 and half stars. But he doesn't call it a bad movie because so many people enjoyed it.

Maybe the movie isn't bad. Maybe it is you that didn't get it.

I'm with you on most of that post. Generally I do think there's a few that are indeed crap. But I disagree with people that think 80% are crap.

The general public doesn't have a general clue. For example: Avatar.
Avatar is overrated. But it is still a good film. Just should have been nominated for best film.

I'm still betting on Matrix Revolutions, Jurassic Park 3 and Spider Man 3 making the top 3, in that order.

Ey, I had to be damn patient for you guys to send in your lists, now you can wait while I take my sweet time. Expect the show to get on the road by late August, early September, as was outlined in the thread-starting post.

Lol I just started working my way through The Sopranos again after a year or two. Currently halfway through series 2.

Don't know wtf that clip has to do with this thread though.

Here are some of the things that are going to happen to you if you don't start the damned top 100 soon.

Slumdog millionaire was absolute ****. Bottom line. It should've had a razzy sweep and not an Oscar one. It was a waste of footage and time. Watching grass grow it less boring and a better use of your time. If it was intended to make you sleepy I'll give it credit for that but I highly doubt it.

I really liked Slumdog Millionaire even though I was ready to hate it! That's pretty impressive by Boyle to make me into a believer. I still think Boyle's best movie this century is Sunshine closely followed by 28 days.

So quick question, can I send in my list? Is that how this whole thread works?

Finally watched "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" the other day.

Thought it was really good, predictable ending.

Don't quite understand why a lot of people have it so highly rated though.

I mean for me personally, for a film to be great it has to have rewatchability, and I really don't see myself wanting to watch this multiple times.

Chick flick I guess.

Nope.

Because Eternal Sunshine has rewatchability for those who love it. A lot of it, actually. And it is most definitely NOT a "chick flick."

Plenty of people love the LOTR movies, but personally I'd rather gouge my eyes out than ever sit through one again.

The ending wasn't a "they get back together and everything is roses" ending. They agreed to give the relationship one last try. I don't see how it is "predictable". We leave them when they are lost, confused, and delirious. They are strangers with a history together. How will this play out in their relationship? We don't know, the film never tells us. All it tells us is that they will try at least one more time.

The last images are of them on a loop, what does this tell us? Maybe their relationship is full of break-ups and start-overs. This isn't a happy ending, or even a predictable one in my books.

Beautiful film.

What I meant was that we were going to loop back to the start of the film again and they would obviously get back together.

Again, no. Eternal Sunshine bears pretty much no resemblance to your run-of-the-mill "chick flick" (which is a very problematic term anyway) - it's not aimed at a predominantly female audience; it doesn't have a female protagonist; it doesn't feature a cliched plotline or characters; it has an ambiguous ending rather than a clear-cut happy one, and leans heavily on elements of Sci-Fi, stereotypically a "male" genre.

Flimmaker1473

How is Eternal Sunshine a chick flick? It's someone's right not to like a great movie. But give me a break. The ending is these two people decide to give their relationship one more shot, confused and we don't know if it is even going to work. I clearly love this movie (it's in my top 20). And I do think it is a brilliant film in every sense of the word. One of the finest to have come out in the last 10 years.

Jesus I'm just being a troll. I know it isn't a chick flick.

Sorry for the long wait, guys. I've been extremely busy at work lately, but now I've got 2 weeks of vacation. Tomorrow, my girlfriend and myself depart for a small roadtrip through Luxemburg, various cities in France and the Belgian seaside. As a result, I won't have access to internet during the coming week. Rephrase: In the coming week, I refuse to lon onto the internet, take any calls or check my mails. I basically don't want to hear from anyone except my girlfriend and will go on a hedonistic rampage in terms of food and drinks, and will (hopefully) catch up on films and books I've been meaning to watch / read. After that trip, I hope my batteries will be fully recharged.

Oh, and the countdown will commence on 9/11.

9th November or 11th September? I don't know where you're from, so I don't know which way 'round you put your dates. :p

Northern France, I assume? We road-tripped 'round there this summer, Calais then about halfway down the Eastern border, West just underneath Paris, around the Eastern/Northern coast, actual Paris for a day, then back up to Calais. 10 days altogether. Saw a sh't-ton of awesome places and had a blast. Have fun!

Looking forward to the list, too. :)
