Yo MoFos.

I just posted an announcement (http://www.movieforums.com/community/announcement.php?f=7) about a Buy From Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=movieforums&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957) link I just added to the Quick Links menu. It's just a standard affiliate link; anything you buy after clicking it, we get a tiny percentage of. I wouldn't ask any of you to go out of your way to buy anything new, but if you're thinking of buying something from Amazon anyway, and you can remember to click that link first, it'd be a real help for me in terms of justifying all the stupidly ambitious plans I have for the site over the next year or two.

We're not "in trouble" or anything like that; I've worked hard to make sure this site is cheap to run, so we never have to resort to anything crazy like charging for anything, or even asking for donations to keep it afloat. But it does take up a lot of time and, as I increasingly resemble a grown-up human being, that time is a little bit harder to come by, and little things like this can go a long way towards making it a lot easier to carve out more time for it in place of more lucrative (buy way less fun) work.

Anyway, if you guys are willing, and can remember, I'd greatly appreciate it. It's a small thing to remember, but it could mean a great deal. Thank you. :)

If I ever buy from amazon I'll go through Mofo first.

I saw that, but I wish it had been up bit sooner as I just purchased about $100 worth of stuff a few days ago.

I buy stuff through amazon all the time so I will definitely go through the MoFo link first.

Just to make Yods feel a bit better...

I only spent 20 quid yesterday on Amazon ;)

(And all my final xmas prezzies are set to be 'mixtapes' & 'maker' stuff. If I need glue tho, I will buy MOFO glue :))

Yeah, I meant to put this up weeks ago, and I'm pretty stupid for procrastinating. My bad. Hopefully a few MoFos procrastinated similarly on their present-buying.

Does it only work on amazon.com or for amazon sites in other countries?

Not as it stands. I might be able to sign up for an Affiliate account on the UK site, too. I'll look into that. Thanks for asking.

so, like, if i already added something to my cart, can i just go off the site, then go to it again through the Mofo link and proceed with the transaction for it to work?

Will this thing show you what we buy?

Re: UK stuff. Doesn't look like I can do anything about that at the moment, so if you need to order from the UK site I guess it probably won't help.

Re: things already added to the cart. Not sure. If you want to be safe re-adding them would do it.

Re: me knowing what you buy. Yes in that they show what's sold, but no in that it's not attached to any data that would allow me to identify who bought it. Not that it matters to me either way, but that's the info they provide.

I will be using this later this week. I'll be getting El Camino by the Black Keys. We also have a lot of "wish list items" from there which may get snagged too. Is this going to be temporary or permanent?

Dunno. It's tucked away pretty unobtrusively on that menu so I guess there's no reason not to leave it there for the time being.

Many thanks to everyone who chooses to use it. :)

Which ones?

The tiny ones that can slip through her door's mail slot. And in some cases, so tiny they can slip through the keyhole.

boo-urns.

My mom wanted to buy stuff off Amazon, so I let her go through the mofo link. Then she clicked off and went to Amazon.ca

Yes, if someone has something in their cart and then follows the link and checks out, you will still receive your percentage.

Big thread bump!

So, advertising is pretty bad these days on the Internet--especially on forums. And I'm trying to find non-invasive, non-bothersome ways to offset the costs of our awesome new server (which is approaching a year of uptime! (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=37321)). One of the ones I tried way back in the day is a simple Amazon affiliate link. It's nice because you all probably use Amazon already, and it doesn't cost you anything; you just have to load Amazon through an affiliate link, and whatever you buy helps support the site a little bit.

So, what do you guys think? Worth trying this? I could stick a link somewhere convenient, and even put together a browser bookmarklet so you don't even have to remember or come to the site to do it.

I have some books, music, etc., published on Amazon... If you can make some money off it, have at it!

Hmmm, maybe I should clarify. :) It works by people (like you) simply accessing Amazon through a link I post, rather than typing "amazon.com" into your browser. And that's it--it's otherwise indistinguishable from any other time you shop there. Don't need to buy anything specific, and it doesn't change the prices. It just requires remembering to access is that way (or, better yet, editing a browser bookmark, if you have one, so you don't have to remember anything).

It sounds like a good idea as long as it's not a pop-up ad.

Most of us probably buy from Amazon all the time so if this site can make money off of us doing our normal shopping, I don't see any down side.

The moderator for this sports forum I write for would put my link so if one of the people on that sports board purchased my cd or book, he would get a portion of it..

Let's do this! I use Amazon frequently, and have no problem accessing it though MoFo. :)

Yeah, that's the same principle/program. It's just not dependent on any one product or anything. Also important to note that he wasn't (and I wouldn't) get a portion of the sale, but a commission on top of it. It doesn't add to the price of reduce what the owner of the product gets.

I shop at amazon all the time, but to be honest I almost never use bookmarks to get to where I'm going. I find it faster to just type in the url.
Another forum I'm on has a shop at Amazon link, but I think I used it maybe one time and then forgot about it.

If you put the link up, I will at least make an effort to remember to use it.

Link (http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=movieforums&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957) It's also in the first post. :)

That should still work, but I'll double-check.

I mostly wanted to ask first, though. I'll see if this week I can confirm the link and put together a few ways to make this easier on everyone who's willing to help out. :)

If you set it up for the .ca amazon I'll go through the forum link for anything I buy from them.

Yeah, because the affiliate (me) is in the U.S., I think that restricts it. It did last time I checked, at least. I'll try to double-check that. Either way though I'm going to take a look this week and whipping up a few ways to make this easier.

Is there a way of nominating someone to be your affiliate in the UK?

That's a really intriguing idea. I'll look into that.
