On a side note, who could have predicted this as the Final 4. I think next time we do this we should have a prediction thread as well. Star Wars and Persona both had tough 1st round matchups that almost knocked them out. Battle of the Algiers and 2001 actually didn't have that many close calls. It's strange but it's made it fun.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back vs. Persona

I think both are very accomplished films. What it comes down to for me is entertainment value and re-watch value. I think Persona is definitely the more intelligently satisfying film. After you've watched it, you feel like there's still so many questions, but there's a form of closure. I've watched it twice so far, but I don't think it stops there.

When I think of Empire though, it's really, really entertaining. Ultimately, I go with Empire, simply because of the entertainment value. That's just my taste. But both of these are of a crazy high level and have every right to be here in the semi final.

And lol, people talk about I HAVEN'T SEEN BATTLE OF ALGIERS.

It's not really that one-sided, but like any war film is portrayed from the eye of the beholder, that being the people who were, at least in Alain Resnais' opinion, similar to the victims of Night and Fog.

I can think of two simple reasons: (1) Many people believe that 2001 is boring and/or don't "get it"; and (2) Many people do not like Kubrick.

I suppose that some people really like both films and just prefer Algiers, but I don't know about the MoFos who specifically voted for it this round.

After seeing 2001 on 70 mm at the Egyptian theater at the beginning of the year, I have to say that I believe it to be quite possibly the greatest film ever made on a technical level (of course, of the films I've seen...)
