I went with Rashomon because it's lasted longer (respect), the woodcutting scene is like a sustained cinematic orgasm of happiness, and I've seen it more recently than Ran.

I have manageable handful of films more I need to watch from Kurosawa until I've seen all of them. One of those includes The Idiot, which I was not planning to watch until I've read the novel -- which will not happen for a while, I imagine. Damn Kurosawa and your Euro-fetishism!

Also, most of the criticism I've ever read about Kurosawa was directed at Rashomon because of its status as his "western crossover" film, so I have a lot of direct criticisms. It's certainly not his "least Japanese" film though. At least it's based off of something Japanese.

It's certainly an interesting one, like Raging Bull vs Taxi Driver a while back.

Yeah, but mood-wise TD and RB are kind of opposite, which made it easier to say TD because it actually makes you feel good at the end on top of being a beautiful piece of art; at least for me. R and R though...

The ones by Kurosawa that I haven't seen yet are (in chronological order): The Most Beautiful, Those Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail, No Regrets For Our Youth, One Wonderful Sunday, The Quiet Duel, The Idiot, The Lower Depths, Dou desu ka-den, Rhapsody in August and Madayo. Plus there are a bunch (most, really) that I barely remember.

I'm pretty ignorant of the "not Japanese enough" criticisms other than that they existed and drove Kurosawa nuts. I always just assumed it would be based the usual superficial and self-serving nationalist/authenticity rhetoric, or is there more to it than that?

As for Ran vs. Rashomon I think they're radically different. For one thing there's the color factor, but I also think in Ran he never moved the camera while in Rashomon there are some amazing dolly shots, and there's an ever shifting camera psychology in that film (which mirrors the psychological subjectivity of the narrative). Ran feels much more like a god's or demon's eye view painting. They're both pretty great, but I'm long overdue to re-watch the later film.

Based on interviews with other Japanese directors he tried to commit suicide because of these criticisms, and from what I can tell the criticisms were based on obvious film critic jealousy. His films weren't "japanese enough" because of the outside influences and his anti-feudalistic attacks.

There's no reason for anyone to justify their votes, and when they do, I actually feel the explanations make less sense than silence. This "tourney" did work out rather well but it's actually just a big exercise in tomfoolery. However, I'll vote at least one more time. Shut up, mark.

16. Goodfellas vs. 9. Lost in Translation
12. Sunshine vs. 4. American Psycho (Why are these movies still around? And one of them will continue on)

12. Terminator 2 vs. 4. Unforgiven (coin toss)
11. Network vs. 3. Night and Fog (I can see now how "unfair" this all is)
7. Stalker vs. 2. Z (my fave film on the list vs. my least fave)

All in all, I found the entire task of comparison to be highly stimulating. For example, I would've never noticed the deep similarities in plot between T2 and Unforgiven if it was not for their arbitrary pairing here.

Shut up, mark.Aye.

If Network vs. Night and Fog is one of the ties, I've just watched Night And Fog and my vote goes to Network.

Of course, if it's not, then it's too late so disregard all that. :D
