Since the original retired and the creation of the new LA version, I still watch the shows, though more out of habit. The serious nature of the shows was always the appeal to me, the investigators aren't always flurting or cracking jokes like in other more popular tv crime dramas.

The LA spinoff doesnt ring true. Maybe its just me, but a big part of the appeal for L&O for me was the gritty realism.

In terms of the DA's in the orginal, i never really warmed to Cutter, he tried to hard to be a young version of Jack McCoy imo.

its a great show..The ripped from the headlines inspired story-lines are as relevant as ever. I just wish Dick Wolf would get his ***** together and release the seasons on DVD already.

Ratings were going further and further down the tubes for the orignal and they were replacing characters left and right just as we got attached to them; Detective Fontana, for instance, I really liked him and he was written out. As I said, I still watch the shows though much of the appeal is gone.

I've tried the other series, but stick to SVU. The original was great, but my interest has always been along the lines of sexually motivated crime, which is what makes the series so great. As soon as I first heard of Law & Order: Los Angeles, I laughed at the idea. The great thing about the real series is that they take place, and are filmed on-location, in NYC - something which is quite rare, unfortunately. One of the things I dislike about modern movies is that they never seem to be about NYC or Detroit or all the locations of the older movies from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. I've never even been to the States, but I feel as though I know NYC better than my own hometown because I've seen so much of it through these movies and, especially, Law & Order!

I'm having a hard time even thinking of traditional cop movies from the last few years. Maybe Training Day, but that came out a decade ago. These are some of the best movies ever made, and I want more of them!

I digress. Law & Order: SVU is probably my favorite on-the-air television show, and one of my favorites (X-Files is first, then The Equalizer) of all time. I like that the show is mostly serious, something which I also greatly appreciate in The Equalizer.

SVU jumped the shark years ago. On the rare occasions I have seen it in recent years the plots have gotten really silly and implausable. They have run out of stories, the problem most long running shows have. That Criminal Intent was mostly lousy from day 1. Those stories rarely made sense, but I liked that hot female psycho who kept coming back. The original Law and Order was still fairly good in its last days compared to the other Law and Orders, but it was time to pull the plug. The death of Jerry Orbach proved not all the cast members were replaceable. The show lost a lot with his passing.
