The first one; songs that "get" to you emotionally in some way. Glad to hear we've got another Etta fan around here. That song just oozes with feeling...it's one of my favorites.
Dirty Vegas- Days go by
You said it...never heard the song until I saw that Volkswagon commercial, but it's incredibly addictive.

You know who Jennifer Holiday is?
No...sounds familiar though. Complicated rings a bell, too. How does it go?
Oh, and for future reference, it's better to consolidate all comments to a single post.
By the way; love the 80s hair you've got in that picture! :D

I'm sure you all are going to laugh at me when I say this, but the one song that totally destroys me, that I connect with almost totally, leaves me a complete emotional wreck, etc..., is
"Stay together for the kids" by Blink 182
I grew up in a house like the one in that song, so it actually hurts to listen to it. I think that's why I love it so much.
Probably one of the more prominent ones that stick out would have to be Who wants to live forever by Queen.
There's no time for us,
There's no place for us,
What is this thing that builds our dreams,
yet slips away from us.
Who wants to live forever,
Who wants to live forever,
There's no chance for us,
It's all decided for us,
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us.
Who wants to live forever,
Who dares to love forever,
When love must die.
But touch my tears with your lips,
Touch my world with your fingertips,
And we can have forever,
And we can love forever,
Forever is our today,
Who wants to live forever,
Who wants to live forever,
Forever is our today,
Who waits forever anyway?

Amen, my brother. That song and "One Year of Love" are great. Gotta love Queen, all 'round. :yup: The Highlander soundtrack has some of their best work, although by no means all of it.
Right now the song that gets me the most is "Left and Leaving" by the Weakerthans. Beautiful, heartwrenching, and so real you could almost touch it. I'd post the lyrics, but they wouldn't work without the music and the vocals.

Pretty much anything by Creed, and Seven Mary Three-Cumbersome.
P.s. Avril Lavigne sings Complicated. I love that song too. It gets all stuck in your head if you hear it a couple times though.

"Brick," by Ben Folds Five, always gets me. The "Hills Like White Elephants" of songs.
LordSlaytan
08-11-02, 03:05 AM
The Long and Winding Road by the Beatles. I listed to that on the day of my Mothers funeral last year. Now if I even hear 10 seconds of it, well it wrings my heart.
Amazing Grace will almost always bring a tear to my eye. Danny Boy will give me goose bumps if its sung by an Irish tenor. My ex-wife really loved country music, I always detested it. However, now it just makes me sad to hear it. I avoid it at all costs. Imagine makes me sad because I always adored John Lennons music, and it reminds me of the day he was murdered. I watched it on the news, all those people crying, and my Uncle right next to me bawling his head off. Tears in Heaven...:bawling:
I'm sure there are more, but those are upfront in my mind.

Pressure - David Bowie and Queen
Ah, Leah - Donny Iris
Sometimes - Erasure
They Don't Know - Tracey Ullman
"Brick," by Ben Folds Five, always gets me. How did I not notice this post for over two years? Brick turns me into a total mess. It's fantastic, yet I literally avoid listening to it.

How did I not notice this post for over two years? Brick turns me into a total mess. It's fantastic, yet I literally avoid listening to it.Thre are a few songs that have that effect on me. It's cool that musical artists can have such an emotional impact, but after falling for it once, I tend to hit the "skip" button like it will eject me from a collapsing building.
I'd have to say that the song that gets me the most is "How's It Gonna Be" by Third Eye Blind. The lyrics in the song are amazing and just capture the feeling of losing someone. The line "The hammocks by the doorway we spent time in Swings empty" paints a perfect picture in my head of the feeling of loss. This is just a great song. When I saw them perform it live, I cried.

I don't avoid it--I embrace it, and let myself blubber. :D
How the hell did you miss that post for so long??? It was maybe my greatest post ever, I'll have you know. :p
But I'm glad this thread's back up, 'cause I think I'm going to make a list right nyah of the songs that would be on my perfect depressed-and-wallowing-in-the-pain mix tape.
So here we go, in no particular order except the way they pop out o' my memories...
The aforementioned "Brick" (of course)
"Freakish," Saves the Day
"Wish You Were Here," Pink Floyd
"Left and Leaving," the Weakerthans - also "Pamphleteer"
"How's It Gonna Be," Third Eye Blind - add "God of Wine"
"Baker Baker," Tori Amos - also "Baker Baker," "Mother" and "The Wrong Band" (hey, Tori does depressing, and does it well)
"A Long December," Counting Crows - and "Anna Begins"
"I Am, I Said," Neil Diamond
"She's a Part of Me," Samiam
"Hurt" - Either version, really, but Johnny's will elicit stronger emotions, always, from me
"Not an Addict," K's Choice
"Cease," the Greg Graffin solo version
"A Jack With One Eye," Texas is the Reason - also "Nickel Wound" and "The Drinking Song"
"The Living Years," Mike and the Mechanics
"Cheer," Descendants - and "Hope," "Clean Sheets" and "Sour Grapes," too
"To Say Goodbye," Patty Loveless
"Angel," Sarah McLaughlan - also "Ice Cream"
"Fly Away," Poe
"Jesse," Paw
"Vindicated," Dashboard Confessional - Although I don't cry when I hear this one, oh, my, do I scream my g*ddamn throat out during the chorus...
"Trusty Chords," Hot Water Music
"Don't Sit Down," Oblivion
"29," Gin Blossoms
"You've Got Her In Your Pocket," the White Stripes
The "Mother Earth, Father Time" song Charlotte sings in Charlotte's Web
"I Am a Rock," Simon and Garfunkel - also "Sounds of Silence"
"Sunday Bloody Sunday," U2 - add in "With or Without You"
"Nightswimming," REM
"Tomorrow Wendy" and "Joey," Concrete Blonde - These two songs are a set, really--and add in "By the Side of the Road" and "Happy Birthday," while you're at it...
"Hallelujah," Rufus Wainwright
"This Woman's Work," Kate Bush
"Soul to Squeeze," Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Scientist," Coldplay - probably "Yellow," too
"Tiny Dancer," Elton John - ...and, oh hell, "Candle in the Wind," too :p
"The Man Who Sold the World," the Nirvana acoustic version
"Forever," Dropkick Murphys - and "The Torch"
"Strawberry," Everclear - and that anthem for all Children of Divorce out there, "Everything is Wonderful Now"
"How Soon is Now?" the Smiths
"Adams Song," Blink 182 - also "Miss You," although I'm a bit tired of it at this point
Christ, there's too many. Just too damn many. But this seems like a good stopping point for now--with the door wide open for additions...
So what's on your ultimate wallowing mix? Remember, this is all about wallowing, so nobody get cute and say, "I always listen to HAPPY songs when I'M sad, you big SILLY!" ;)
Otis Redding's Sittin' on the Dock of a Bay is the all-time #1 wallowing-in-self-pity song, though it's the only one I'll actually listen to when I'm happy.

I completely dig the song, but I gotta admit that I don't see how it could be the all-time numba one. I mean, downbeat, yes, but wallowing? :skeptical:
But, hey, that's you, and I'm me. We're marching to the beat of diff'rent strokes, 'cause we're different folks.
Had I to name an ultimate, I would probably say "Wish You Were Here." It's the easy choice--lost love, wasted life, regrets out the yin-yang, and a soulful guitar weeping away...

Okay, here's a song that gets me every time. It's the most messed up love song I've ever heard.
Ryan Adams - Wish You Were Here
Cotton candy and a rotten mouth
You know you're so f*cked up
You know I couldn't help but have it for you
And everybody knows the way I walk
And knows the way I talk
And knows the way I feel about you
It's all a bunch of sh*t
And there's nothing to do around here
It's totally f*cked up
I'm totally f*cked up
Wish you were here
And streets that only turn to boulevards
And houses with back yards
and it's raining like hell on the cars
And everybody knows the way I walk
And knows the way I talk
Knows the way I feel about you
It's all a bunch of sh*t
And there's nothing to do around here
It's totally f*cked
I'm totally f*cked
Wish you were here
And if I could have my way
We'd take some drugs
And we'd smile
We'd smile
We'd smile
But not tonight, my dear
Wish you were here
Wish you were here
Wish you were here
Wish you were here

Amy by Ryan Adams
I don't know why I let go
I want to be your friend
Flowers grow through my window
And I love you again
Oh, I love you oh
When you laid me down
Into your beautiful garden
Flowers in the love of my arms
It's God shining through to me I guess
It's God shining through to me, I guess
Oh, I love you Amy
Do you still love me?
I go to the places where we used to
I feel sad
I am out here looking for you
Sometimes I pretend
Oh, I miss you oh
When you laid me down
Into your beautiful garden
Flowers and the love in my arms
Is God playing evil tricks on me?
Is God playing evil tricks on me?
Oh, I love you Amy
Do you still love me?

Autumn's Monologue
Oh, why can't I be what you need?
A new improved version of me.
But I'm nothing so good
No, I'm nothing...just bones.
A lonely ghost burning down songs
Of violence, of love, and of sorrow.
I beg for just one more tomorrow!
Where you'd hold me down, fold me in
Deep, deep, deep in the heart of your sins.
I'd break in two over you
I'd break in two and each piece of me dies
And only you can give me the breath of life!
But you don't see me. You don't.
Here I'm pinned between darkness and light,
Bleached and blinded by these nights.
Where I'm tossing and tortured till dawn
By you, visions of you, then you're gone.
The shock bleeds the red from my face,
When I hear someone's taken my place.
How could love be so thoughtless, so cruel?
When all, all that I did was for you...
I'd break in two over you
I'd break in two and each piece of me dies
And only you can give me the breath of life!
But you don't see me. You don't.
I'd break in two over you
I'd break in two and each piece of me dies
And only you can give me the breath of life!
But you don't see me. You don't.
I'd break in two over you, I'd break in two over you!
Over you. I'd break in two, I would break in two for you.
Now you see me, now you don't.
Now you need me, now you don't.
The Fiction We Live
(Responding to Autumn's Monologue)
You might be just what I need, No I would not change a thing
Been dreaming of this so long, but we only exist in this song
The thing is I'm not worth the sorrow
But if you come and meet me tomorrow
I will hold you down, fold you in, deep, deep, deep in the fiction we live
I break in two over you, I break in two and if a piece of you dies
Autumn I will bring you back to life, of course I see you, I do.

The Prayer of St. Francis by Sarah Maclachlan....
"Lord make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury pardon.
Where there is doubt faith.
Where there is despair hope.
Where there is darkness light.
And where there is sadness joy.
O divine master grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love
For it is in giving that we receive-
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life."
This song always chokes me up. :yup:

another year another tree
but this year you wont be with me
it don’t, feel much like Christmas
we used to watch the same old shows
sing social D on the radio
but it don’t feel much like Christmas
this used to be my favorite holiday
but Christmas eve was filled with dreams
but you chased them all away
why did you leave me for Christmas?
you left me lonely its true
could you have waited till new years
at least the year would be through
and now The mistletoes hanging for no reason at all
and all the presents are still wrapped
but you don’t even call
a take a walk to where we go
there were lights and there was snow
but it don’t feel much like Christmas
people ask me how you’ve been I fake a smile and say ok
but I don’t feel much like Christmas
you used to be my favorite holiday
but now your gone I’m all alone
all that I can say
why did you leave me for Christmas?
you left me lonely its true
could you have waited till new years
at least the year would be through
and now The mistletoes hanging for no reason at all
and all the presents are still wrapped
but you don’t even call
waiting here alone
Christmas by the phone
said I’m waiting all alone
spending Christmas by the phone

Betray me - Adema
This song got me after, naturally, a boy was a bit of a git to me
I watched you change, I never knew
That you would be, Like all the rest
You were so true, too good to be true
I trusted you, and fell apart again
I cannot change the fact, that you're not coming back
So depressed, I'm your slave
Betray me
You're not the one, to be trusted with my love
Betray me
You're not the one, who should be trusted with my love
I had to leave, so I could breathe
I hate to fight, that's not what I want
You were so true, too good to be true
I trusted you, and fell apart again
I cannot change the fact, that you're not coming back
So depressed, I'm your slave
Betray me
You're not the one, to be trusted with my love
Betray me
You're not the one, who should be trusted with my love
I know
I cannot change the fact, that you're not coming back
So depressed, I'm your slave
Betray me
You're not the one, to be trusted with my love
Betray me
You're not the one, who should be trusted with my love
I cannot change the fact, that you're not coming back
So depressed, I'm your slave

Hey hey, my my by Neil Young
Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.
Out of the blue
and into the black
You pay for this,
but they give you that
And once you're gone,
you can't come back
When you're out of the blue
and into the black.
The king is gone
but he's not forgotten
Is this the story
of Johnny Rotten?
It's better to burn out
'cause rust never sleeps
The king is gone
but he's not forgotten.
Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
I have no idea why it gets to me, but it does in a good way, it make me feel happy. and settles me down if i'm uppity.
1916 by Motorhead
16 years old when I went to war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Counting my days down to zero,
And I marched and I fought and I bled
And I died & I never did get any older,
But I knew at the time, That a year in the line,
Is a long enough life for a soldier,
We all volunteered,
And we wrote down our names,
And we added two years to our ages,
Eager for life and ahead of the game,
Ready for history's pages,
And we fought and we brawled
And we whored 'til we stood,
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,
A thirst for the Hun,
We were food for the gun,and that's
What you are when you're soldiers,
I heard my friend cry,
And he sank to his knees, coughing blood
As he screamed for his mother
And I tell by his, side,
And that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud
And the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother
And she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault
And I wasn't to blame,
The day not half over
And ten thousand slain,and now
There's nobody remembers our names
And that's how it is for a soldier.
I am speechless towards this song.. it's that good.

Rest in peace girl, your death is such a shame
The paper said a bullet got in your way
But I smell foul play, possible poisoning
I had to bring you in for questioning
I went to your grave, dug up your body
Brought it to my house, where you lay
So let's play doctor babe
We'll operate today
Incisions must be made
You could help solve this case
For me...
I headed downtown, to share what I had found
It's not a suicide, it's a crime
I have a witness, it's clearly evident
There had to be someone else present
At the time of death, poisons in stomach
How could she pull it, if she's dead?
So let's play doctor babe
We'll operate today
Incisions must be made
You could help solve this case
We need a scalpel now
Under white lights you lay
We've got to hurry up
Before the flesh decays
Away...away
I'll catch the murderer
And send him away
I'll get the evidence
From your last day
Your last day...
So let's play doctor babe
We'll operate today
Incisions must be made
You could help solve this case
We need a scalpel now
Under white lights you lay
We've got to hurry up
Before the flesh decays
Away...away

Hollywood"
I'm calling up my Cheri
Tell her that I'm gonna leave
Cause I'm movin' on
to Hollywood you see
It's always been a life long dream
For my family
To see me
On that silver screen
And I know I can't go wrong....
Cause I finally found my song
I'm headin' where I belong...Hollywood
I know there's something in store for me
(But) nothing like the tragedies
That have seen me through
In real life you see
Next time that you see me
I'll be done with misery
I'll be shinnin' bright
For all the world to see
And I know I can't go wrong....
I'm headin' where I belong..Hollywood
I know that something's there for me...I'm flying free
That's why I'm calling up my Cheri
Tell her that I'm gonna leave
Cause dreams are free
In Hollywood you see
And I know I can't go wrong....cause I finally found my song...
I'm headin' where I belong...
Hollywood...Hollywood
And I know I can't go wrong ...
I'm headin' where I belong...Hollywood

"Holdin' On" by Citizen Cope
My ex-girlfriend used to tell me that song made her think of me, and made her wish I was there. We went to see Citizen Cope one night - our relationship was getting pretty rocky. He started to play "Holdin' On," and I went to hold her, and she recoiled. It was the first time she ever did that, and it was the last time I ever touched her. We broke up shortly thereafter. That wasn't a good night.
I have been wanting you for so long
I have been wanting you for so long (so long)
I been down
I been down a different road
I been out
I have been out of control
Girl, when you touch me back
yeah, yeah
I get my senses back
Yeah
Girl, when you touch me back
yeah, yeah
I get my senses back
Yeah
So now I'm feeling alright
Cause nothin' feels like
When you're holdin' on
Said, I feel alright
Cause nothing feels like
When you're holdin'
When you're holdin'
I'm feelin' alright
Cuz nothing feels like
When you're holdin' on
When you're holdin' on
I wanna treat you like you wanna be treated (yeah)
I wanna see you as you wanna be seen (yeah)
I been down
I been down a different road
I been out
I have been out of control
Girl, when you touch me back (yeah)
I get my senses back (yeah)
girl, when you touch me back (yeah)
I get my senses back (yeah)
Oohh
So now I'm feeling alright
'Cause nothing feels like
When you're holdin' on
Said, I feel alright
Cause nothin' feels like
when you're holdin'
when you're holdin' on
Said
I feel alright
Cause nothing feels right
When you're holdin'
When you're holdin' on
I feel alright
Cause nothin' feels right
When you're holdin' on
When you're holdin' on
