I hope everyone's aware of how boring One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is compared to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I mean, it takes place in a psychiatric hospital, unlike all the fun locations in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

===

Part of what hooks me to Lawrence of Arabia is the visual element, yet Star Wars also has an extraordinary visual element in its own sense. Both implicitly speak to politics larger than the frame of their own stories, and both are admirable in that sense, even if Lawrence does paint a far more nuanced picture of the true revolutionary.

Children of Men and Dr. Strangelove are political films that speak wonderfully to the contradictions of their own time. In this sense, Children of Men naturally speaks clearer to us today. Still, it is not as if the absurdity of government machinations has gotten any less absurd even if the potential for instant doomsday does not loom quite as near as before. Yet, perhaps what might make Children of Men the superior film is that, in addition to its critique, it also provides an answer, a message of hope. It, in some sense, takes place after the sardonic end of Dr. Strangelove.

It looks like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf will come out on top. Still, I couldn't have picked a better parallel to Contempt. Look at all the other films in these brackets. No other comes as close to the subject matter and even structure of Contempt as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf except perhaps one of the plot lines of Yi Yi. One could even say that both films center around a missing, invisible, yet unifying lie that constitutes a relationship and what happens when that facade is shattered. Yet, it is possible that Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf botches this presentation by actually providing an answer, an almost mechanistic key? Perhaps it is in this way that Contempt is much more successful in its signalling of the absolute Other, the unknowable abyss from which our subjectivities flow. But I have not watched either in some time, so I hesitate to pursue further.

Oh what glorious pairings The Fates hath dealt us (or just rauld being clever)!

Comments: I've been finding some odd parallels in matchups, but the oddest so far is the strange similarity of Apocalypse Now and Lebowski. Both are journeys that explore themes of madness and insignificance, each with a central character acting as our guide and the "eye of the hurricane"....but where AN is a deadly serious meditation on evil, BL is gleefully absurd fun.

As for Contempt and Woolf? Woolf is far better. Contempt is sloppy, ridiculously self-important, dull pseudo-intellectual schlock, exactly the type of laughable and inept wanna-be "insightful" mediocrity so beloved by cinema geeks, the kind that has given genuine thoughtful art movies a bad name.

I think Contempt is pretty ridiculous too. But I think that Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is more ridiculous, and manages to have less camp appeal (though Richard Burton tries), far less of the occasional touches of insight, and none of the moments of cinematic flair that pop up sporadically in Contempt and make Godard's film, silly though it is, for my money the more interesting and memorable of the pair.

The greatest play written in the English language (sorry, Shakespeare) with awesome acting and directing is more ridiculous than an average film directed by the most-overrated director in film history? I don't believe it. You may call it hyperbole, but I call it reality.

honeykid

Some vote favourites, while others vote for the better. I'll always vote favourite, unless we're looking for 'the best film'. That's one of the reasons I get frustrated by not being able to vote against a film I've not seen. I understand the reason and I agree, but there's no way a film I'm seeing for the first time is going to beat a 'favourite'. With me, it takes time to become a favourite.

I am glad to see that my movie, Apocalypse Now, has won again, but saddened to see Ferris Bueller defeated by that damn Cuckoo's Nest. Also glad to see Oldboy defeated since it defeated my Tootsie in the last round.

I am glad to see that my movie, Apocalypse Now, has won again...

It looks like it'll win at least one more round for sure.

I'm predicting it'll be Apocalypse, Empire, Strangelove and Cuckoo's Nest in the Sweet 16 from the top brackets.

That movie is such bland toast. How dare it beat Ferris Bueller. It better not beat Apocalypse!
