Ha, that's why I didn't vote on it. Seriously though, Jaws is pretty much at the top of my favorites, and just looking on the IMDb page for A Taste of Honey makes me pretty much positive of it. With that said, I still haven't seen so I won't vote on it.

Casablanca vs. Lady VengeanceI'm casting this vote right now to shake things up, because maybe people feel self-conscious about voting against such a classic cultural staple like Casablanca for an extremely recent, slightly vulgar, "untested" film like Lady Vengeance. I too would be very reluctant to relinquish the weight of something like Casablanca for what might be considered prurient fair, but Lady Vengeance as a whole left me with enough of a positive impression that I am not at all afraid to say that it excels in many ways that Casablanca both does and does not, indeed, could not. This is not to say that Casablanca is merely great for its ostensible qualities. There is clearly more to the work than just the work itself. It carries with it an indelible web of history that is constantly being redefined. It is doubtful that Lady Vengeance will ever be able to create such a history for itself despite how ecstatic I feel about it. Already it has taken second seat to Oldboy in terms of immediate popularity.

Taxi Driver vs. Raging BullThis is a hell of coincidence. But here, I will defer to the consensus. For, although Raging Bull is perhaps the more honest portrait and certainly the more carefully and consistently shot/edited, Taxi Driver just has this euphoric inertia and freedom of possibility that few films can capture. It is not an "adventure film", yet it feels so adventurous despite its dark outlines. It also has one of the best, if not the best Bernard Hermann soundtracks I have ever heard. Although I loved Raging Bull's careful use of the Cavaleria Rusticana, Hermann's soundtrack gels so greatly with the film, I begin to wonder whether it is really the film I am enjoying or in fact the soundtrack; clearly, the sublime simultaneity of both.

I'm suddenly excited to watch Freaks, since a clear Bergman fan considers it above Fanny and Alexander.

I adore Bergman, but I've never been able to get into Fanny & Alexander. Freaks has some personal connection to me in way due to a family member telling me all about her experiences in psychiatric hospitals decades ago where she looked after people with such conditions like in the film. I find it a fascinating piece of film history.

I'm fairly certain this will be the closest match in this bracket, and it is a tough one to decide. I just love the originality of both films, but I can watch Up over and over and over again. Mr. Smith I'm not so sure, though I did think it was a good film. And I'm still giving Up a "one-up" for even more creativity. Sometimes a film is so unrealistic but yet it just works. It's a cinematic adventure to me.
