You probably feel about as slighted as I was with the Sunset Boulevard/Grapes of Wrath matchup. Although I'm not sure Grapes of Wrath has enough followers to get it far regardless of many of these matchups.
Strangely, I've only seen 6 movies so far in total of bracket 4, and I can't vote on any of the matchups. But I've got A Boy and His Dog lined up for a viewing for tomorrow, to start things off. I'd like to see Out of the Past and The French Connection as well.

Mildred Pierce vs. Platoon
Hmm, I smell cheating.
You haven't ticked off Mildred Pierce in your 100 film noirs list even though you've just updated your Cannes' Award winners list. If memory serves, you also nominated Platoon. Did you actually watch Mildred Pierce or is this just a vote for the film you nominated?

In fairness, I've seen part of Mildred Pierce (the Joan Crawford one) -- just like Mark F has seen part of Good Burger. I almost stopped myself with this entry because I remember liking what I saw with Mildred Pierce, but I don't think it would have got my vote, anyway.
Now stop investigating me. Bad boy.

I told you, Mark. Look what you started. The whole thing's gonna come crashing down. People are gonna watch five minutes of a film and then vote.
SC, watch the damn film. It's good and worthy of your time. Don't follow Mark's lead, he's a troublemaker.

Lighten up, Sexy. At least Ferris Bueller will likely advance to the next round.
Nice to see that there's 3 Michael Curtiz films nominated in this tournament. I'm certain of Angels With Dirty Faces (nominated it myself) and Mildred Pierce, but iirc Casablanca was nominated too.
Anyway, I have to get a hold of Man With The Movie Camera, Mildred Pierce, Persona and A Boy And His Dog. I might not bother with Cabaret and Midnight Cowboy, and they seem like the kind of movies for which you have to be in the right mood to fully appreciate them. And I'm rarely in the mood to watch a musical (not my cup of tea).

I have Midnight Cowboy (on Blu-ray) to watch, but haven't stuck it in and watched it yet. I've seen part of it before - years ago. I have never seen Cabaret, though.
I was disappointed that Fight Club got paired up with Persona, since I believe that's a favorite around here. I picked Fight Club. I thought it had a good chance to win -- I wasn't even real keen on picking it -- didn't it win some other kind of contest around here?
Yeah SC watch the movie!

This confuses me. What sort of mood do you have to be in to watch Cabaret and Midnight Cowboy which makes them different from the other four movies? The "I Will Try to Like a mark f Fave Mood"? HA! Maybe some people think they're depressing or too serious, but I find them two of the funniest films ever made. Plus Cabaret is unlike any other musical. It doesn't have anybody sing or dance who isn't working in a 1931 Berlin cabaret, except for probably the best scene in the whole movie which could never be called "someone just bursting into song".

Yeah, see, I don't see what's so terrible about choosing your favorite over a movie you haven't seen. If you haven't seen it, well, maybe you haven't seen it yet for a reason. As in, maybe it hasn't called to you. Maybe it's not the right time to see it. I watch movies to experience... not just take everything in like a robot and its database. I'm sorry, but for me, if I'm not in the mood for a certain movie and it feels like it's not the right time for it, it's just database material and it might mean nothing to me.
For example, I saw Donnie Darko when it first came out and I HATED it. Still don't believe it's one of the best, but Jake Gyllenhaal did NOTHING for me, then. It wasn't the right time.
ash_is_the_gal
06-23-11, 02:37 PM
Sexy, you and i have both only seen a small amount of movies compared to a lot of people here. not because those movies didn't "call" to us, but other movies appealed to us, and we probably don't spend enough time watching movies as some.
you simply can't vote just because you love one film and the looks of the other one doesn't call to you. it's not only ridiculous, but it's pretty insulting to those who have seen all these films and have been thoughtfully voting all along.
if you love a film as much as you say you do, then you should be happy to watch its opponent.

By the time I come to put on a DVD, I put something on to match my mood. If i'm in the mood for something I haven't seen before, then ok but normally I can't determine whether an unseen film would match the mood i'm in. Hence I have about 50+ DVDs i've never seen before because rarely in the mood to watch Kagemusha or Amacord

Here's the thing though, and I'm sort of agreeing with sexy, though I'm also going off-topic a bit: Life is too short to force yourself to sit through some movie you hate. There are too many other movies that I want to see to waste my time with that nonsense.
Now, if a movie gets dull in spots, or is just so-so, I generally stick with it. Okay? I'm not some child who need explosions or gore every five minutes. I love many mature and subtle films. I've seen some movies that didn't do much for me but ended up, overall, as a like.
But I'll only put up with so much before I quit. If a movie truly annoys me or is tedious, I'm not going to sit there just so I can mark it off some imaginary checklist. The way I look at it is this: If I watch two movies in a bracket, and I absolutely can't sit through one and can sit through the other, well then, guess which one I'm gonna vote for?
Obviously when I give it a fair chance and still don't like it, then as far as I'm concerned, it sucks. Sure, maybe you love it. But we're not really voting objectively here. That's horseshit. I'll give a movie a chance even if it's not my usual cup of tea. But I'm not going to force myself to watch every minute just to please someone else who likes it.
Either you're voting for your favorite or you're voting for someone else's. If I didn't like it enough to want to see it all, then I seriously doubt any number of viewings can change that.
So don't expect me to torture myself with something I hate, even if you love it. I just don't believe you can watch a movie for the majority of its run-time and hate it, and then suddenly change your mind in the third act. That's never happened in my life.

Okay sexy, you asked for it. :p
Well, it will take me some time to sort my thoughts....
I'll try to not mention stuff I've talked about elsewhere, if I can. So don't freak if I leave out stuff.
First, let me say, I love movies. Just movies, period. I love watching movies, I love the very idea of movies. So I'm always partial, more generous and open than maybe the average person. It's very hard for me to be as specific as you probably want.
I have my personal preferences, of course. They are not set in stone, though. Sometimes my mood says one type of movie, sometimes another. Mainly I just want to see something well-made with an interesting story and good acting. That's all. :D
I have a particular affection for horror/fantasy/sci-fi. That's just me. But I also love many, many others. I have broad tastes. Sling Blade is one of my favorite movies ever. Hotel Rwanda was a great film. The Grumpy Old Men movies. The Conversation was a superb movie. Marathon Man was cool.
What else? 21 Grams and Babel. The Talented Mr. Ripley. I liked Ripley's Game even more. As Good As It Gets. I always like seeing Jack Nicholson do his thing. Fried Green Tomatoes is a good movie. I like Kathy Bates. About Schmidt. Boys Don't Cry is a movie I really like. Trainspotting is another top favorite. Shine is too. I also highly recommend Perfume. It was amazing. Harold and Maude. Great movie. Ghost Dog.
Land of the Blind. Dancer in the Dark. The Pianist. The Color Purple. Beloved. Cool Hand Luke. Man on the Moon. Broken Vessels. Deceiver. Joe Versus the Volcano. Copycat. Michael. Of Mice and Men (remake). The Minus Man. Kinsey. Jerry Maguire. The Sweet Hereafter. Eve's Bayou. In the Company of Men.
I'm not especially interested in western and war movies, but I love Saving Private Ryan and Tombstone, as well as other films from those genres. Platoon is fantastic. McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Das Boot was excellent. Casualties of War. The Thin Red Line. The Assassination of Jesse James.
I really dug Revolutionary Road. Thought it was a great drama. What's Eating Gilbert Grape is one of my favorite movies too. If you like Night of the Hunter, I recommend Undertow. It's very much like it.
The Aviator was fantastic. I've seen most of Scorcese's stuff. He's great. I also like Woody Allen. Match Point. Crimes and Misdemeanors. Pretty much all his movies, I dig. Sweet & Lowdown. Annie Hall. Sleeper.
Hitchcock. Rear Window. The Birds. Strangers on a Train. Tarantino. I like his movies. The Coen Bros. Barton Fink, ect. Lynch. You know that.
I have seen lots of movies, man. I'm forgetting lots of titles, I'm sure.
I have never disowned a movie if I liked most of it. I'm willing to accept a movie that goes against what I expect/think it should be in the end. I think I'm intelligent enough to recognize when a movie is leading to something, when it has a slow build. I can be patient. We all have our bad days though, so maybe I misjudged a few. Hey, I don't claim to be perfect. :)
And I've never ended up liking a movie that I hated throughout most of it, as far as I remember... I'm not talking about so-so movies. I'm forgiving of movies that aren't very good. It takes a lot for me to really hate a movie. So if I hate it, I really hate it.
Maybe that's just me.
These were all movies I would rate 4 or 5 stars out of 5. I purposely tried to avoid listing horror/fantasy/sci-fi because I don't want to crash the internet. :D
Like I said, film nut.

Out of those movies, I like: About Schmidt, As Good As It Gets, I remember liking the Grumpy Old Men movies but it's been about 15 years since I saw them, Babel, Harold and Maude, The Pianist, The Color Purple, Cool Hand Luke, MAN ON THE MOON -- I used to really love this, Copycat, Kinsey, Jerry Maguire (but it's been years), Eve's Bayou (but it's been years, too), Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Revolutionary Road, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Das Boot (I swear, you must be looking at my Top 100 thread), The Aviator, Tarantino movies -- but I do not like Lynch. Barton Fink was good, I saw that about 6 years ago. I have the Of Mice and Men movie now - the one with Gary Sinise and John Malkovich -- it's on my list of movies to watch.

I do tend to be more forgiving of a movie if it has at least one thing going for it that I am partial to, such as an actor I'm fond of, or a specific directorial style, or just an off-the-wall story. It's not so easy for me to pinpoint just what I'll like or dislike. But usually I'll knock my rating down a bit in those cases.
When I personally rate movies, I mostly rate within genres and subgenres. For example, I'm not usually going to rate an Evil Dead 2 with a King Kong in mind, or an Exorcist against a Forrest Gump. That's not fair, in my opinion. Of course, in this case, that's exactly what we're expected to do. And yes, the movies are unfairly and arbitrarily put up against each other.
But as I said in the beginning, I don't see this as definitive. Only as an interesting thought experiment, contrasting movies I ordinarily wouldn't and maybe seeing them both in new ways.
That's worth the minor annoyance of having to make hard choices between movies I really like. Plus it promotes interesting debate, and I get to beat up on people who pick A History of Violence over Ferris Bueller. :D
Like I said, film nut.

2. A Boy and His Dog vs. 15. Million Dollar Baby
It's not even close in my opinion. Though I did enjoy A Boy and His Dog at least halfway through the movie (I'd have given it an 8/10 half way through) it's weird and whacky second half ends up giving it an overall 3 or 4/10 for me. Which is kind of sad really. Not sure how it has actually garnered votes thus far, but I'd be guessing it's due to all the hate for Million Dollar Baby, which is an amazing film to me.

Fight Club is really well made, really enjoyable, and definitely worth a watch, but it is political, and it's politics feel wrong to me. And for as much of a Hollywood production Amadeus is, I still find a large part of my relation with Mozart's music visually and emotionally guided by this film.
