Thanks you for all the congratulations and kind words everyone. :) And thank you for providing the Lea Thompson pic HK, somehow I know you'd be the one to do it. :p

holy crap, you haven't seen Pleasantville? you'd love it! seeeee it!

I know, I know. And I have no clue why not. I've fancied watching it for ages and even blind bought the DVD 2/3 years ago but still not watched it. It keeps coming into my mind and I'll think 'oh I must watch that soon' then it slips my mind again for a while

But as you are all hounding me here :D I will give it a go soon and post my thoughts in my Movie Musings thread.

Taking my cue from the board's top 100 list a couple of weeks back I went ahead and figured out the most popular year, actors and directors by number of films on the list. I did it fairley quickly however, just skimming through, so likely that there is a mistake or two

Most Popular Years

1999 – 8 (American Beauty, South Park, The Matrix, Galaxy Quest, The Mummy, Man on the Moon, Austin Powers,
Being John Malkovich)
1994 – 7 (Lion King, Shawshank Redemption, Leon, Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Speed, Ed Wood)
1993 – 7 (Jurassic Park, Groundhog Day, Heart and Souls, In the Line of Fire, The Fugitive, The Mask, The Sandlot)
1987 – 6 (Princess Bride, Lethal Weapon, Predator, Lost Boys, Raising Arizona, Over the Top)
2001 - 6 (Lord of the Rings:Fellowship of the Ring, Donnie Darko, Amelie, Zoolander, Monster Inc, Royal Tenenbaums)
2000 - 5 (Cast Away, Unbreakable, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Remember the Titans, The Dish)
2004 - 5 (Eternal Sunshine, Spider-Man 2, Anchorman, Team America, 50 First Dates,
1991 - 5 (Terminator 2, Beauty and the Beast, The Hard Way, Doc Hollywood, Hot Shots)

Most Popular Directors

Steven Spieldberg – 4 (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can
Robert Zemeckis – 3 (Back to the Future, Cast Away, Forrest Gump)
Alfred Hitchcock – 3 (Strangers on a Train, Psycho, Vertigo)
Andrew Stanton - 2 (Wall-e, Finding Nemo)
John G Avildsen - 2 (Rocky, Karate Kid)
John McTiernan - 2 (Die Hard, Predator)
Luc Besson - 2 (Leon, Fifth Element)

there are actually loads and loads with two films, and not going to list them all

Most Popular Actors

Tom Hanks – 6 (Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Big, Catch Me If You Can, Toy Story 3 – voice)
Jim Carrey – 5 (Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine..., Man on the Moon, Cable Guy, The Mask)
Bruce Willis - 4 (Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, Fifth Element, Sin City)
Owen Wilson - 4 (Zoolander, Royal Tenenbaums, Cable Guy, Royal Tenenbaums)
Samuel L Jackson - 4 (Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, Unbreakable, Iron Man)
Elijah Wood - 4 (Lord of the Rings, Eternal Sunshine, Sin City, The Faculty)
Robert Downey Jr - 3 (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man, Heart and Souls)
Sylvester Stallone - 3 (Rocky, First Blood, Over the Top)
Johnny Depp - 3 (Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ed Wood)
Emilio Estevez - 3 (Mighty Ducks, Breakfast Club, Repo Man)
Harrison Ford - 3 (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars V, The Fugitive)
Ben Stiller - 3 (Zoolander, Royal Tenenbaums, Cable Guy)

Not surprised to see 1999 and 1994 up there as the top film years. What was a surprise was the complete lack of Will Smith. I've always liked him but there's not a single film of his that made it despite me enjoying a lot of his - Independence Day, Men in Black, I Robot, Ali, Enemy of the State etc

Honourable Mentions

As I said I would, I'm really missing having my list to do each day. So I'm following through on my threat to list more films I love, and feel are worthy of a mention even if they didn't quite make the list. And I'll keep going until everyone gets fed up and tells me to go away! :D

I've decided to do the groups by themes and first up we have the...

Shoulda Made Its

These are films that should definitely be on my top 100 list but somehow got overlooked. Either I completely
forgot about them or just went temporarily insane and discounted them

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/TotalRecall.jpg

Total Recall

“I just had a terrible thought... what if this is a dream?”

This is a film that should definitely be on my top 100 list. I only just finished my list and already I hate it! :D Just when I was making my list I went through all my DVD covers (which I keep in binders) to help choose films but as Total Recall is a special steelcase edition its separate, hidden away and I forgot about it

Anyway this is a cracking film. Schwarzenegger is in fine ass-kicking form, in what is for me his best film outside of Terminator 2. It's just a lot of fun with some admittedly gratuitous violence/bloodshed and some fantastic special effects, which when combined make for some truly memorable scenes. It also has a gloriously OTT performance from Ronny Cox as Arnold's nemesis and Michael Ironside as the henchman, Richter. Both suffer rather awesome deaths

Just great fun and should have made it comfortably round about the 70-80 mark I'd say

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Aladdin.jpg

Aladdin

“Three wishes, to be exact. And ixnay on the wishing for more wishes. That's all. Three. Uno, dos, tres.
No substitutions, exchanges or refunds.”

How this one disappeared from my list is a mystery. It was definitely on there in the 70s/80s I think but at some point when I've been transferring and updating the list it got lost in the shuffle

One of the big hits that was a part of the 90s revival for Disney this is just a wonderfully entertaining film. Full of beautiful animation, lots of laughs and an incredible showcase of Robin Williams manic talents. His performance is just incredible and really set the trend for big name stars voicing characters in animated films. As well as his tremendous Genie, there is also a truly menacing panto-like villain in Jafar, and a wonderfully entertaining performance by Gilbert Gottfried as Jafar's parrot.

Those performances along with some beautifully animated set-pieces and catchy songs earn its place in the pantheon of Disney greats.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/FerrisBueller.jpg

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

How could I leave this off? One of the funniest and most feel good films I've ever seen; it's just a really breezy film with some great performances. One of the definitive movies of the 80s and I forgot about it!!! Not only should it have been there but should easily have made the 60s/70s at least I'd say

Matthew Broderick is excellent as Ferris, incredibly charming and likeable. Jeffrey Jones makes for a great villain as the slimy, scheming Principal Rooney. And it's filled out by winning turns by Alan Ruck, Mia Sara and Jennifer Grey.

It doesn't have much of a plot really, instead relying on series of classic set-pieces one after the other. Favourites include singing “Twist and Shout” at the parade, visits to a restaurant and an art gallery and of course the fate of that gorgeous Ferrari.

Oh and it also has a great little cameo from Charlie Sheen as a troubled bad boy. What a stretch that must have been for him! :D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/EnemyoftheState.jpg

Enemy of the State

“If you live another day I'll be very impressed.”

Just a fantastically entertaining thriller. Completely implausible and absolute nonsense but a lot of fun, with two extremely engaging performances by Will Smith and Gene Hackman. Smith is great as just a normal guy who begins to crack under the extreme situation he finds himself in, but Hackman just about steals the movie from him any time he appears.

Even though it's complete nonsense, the incredible pace it flies along at and the tone of paranoia it creates really grabs you, and makes you buy into the notion that all this amazing technology and surveillance could be possible. Just a highly entertaining, gripping film.

This really should have easily sneaked onto the list at least somewhere in the 80s.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/X-FilesFighttheFuture.jpg

The X-Files – Fight the Future

“How many times have we been here before? So close to the truth.”

I'll admit if it wasn't for the X-Files aspect of this film I wouldn't get half as much of the enjoyment from it as I do. I adore the X-Files. It's my favourite TV show of all time and I am still rather obsessed with it. The only reason I missed this is it's kept separate from my other films along with all the seasons of the show.

So why do I love the film? Easy. It's got Mulder and Scully, the Lone Gunmen, aliens, conspiracies, shadowy Government figures...what's not to love? And compared to I Want to Believe it's an absolute masterpiece! :D

Oh not sure about that. Some years would be ok but I think there are others where I seem to have seen hardly any of the supposed top films from that year. Will have a think about it though. And thanks for thinking that I'd be able to do it! :D

Coulda Made Its

These are films which I strongly considered putting on the list but felt I didn't remmber well enough to put on the list, and even if I did I'd have no idea where to put them. They are films I either haven't seen in a long time or some I've only seen once but not for quite a few years. When I finally do get round to watching them I'd say at least a fair few would make it onto the list

As my memory of these is rather vague I didn't have as much to say about them.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Negotiator.jpg

The Negotiator

“You hurt one of them, you burn up any currency you have with me. They're all I care about.
Getting you out of here alive...a distant second.”

I was close to putting this on the list but haven't seen it for absolute years so feared my memory was perhaps betraying me. But in my mind it's a great and highly under-rated thriller, with two great actors (Kevin Spacey and Samuel L Jackson) going head to head

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/BillandTed.jpg

Bill and Ted

“Ok if you're truly us, then what number are we thinking of?” ~ “Sixty-Nine, Dude!!!”

The Bill and Ted movies were absolute favourites for me when I was younger but I haven't seen them in so long I'm not sure if they would still be enjoyable enough to make the list and if so where on the list; so I left them off for the moment. I can remember specific moments but not sure from which of the two movies they come from

From what I remember they were two very enjoyable films with a couple of very loveable characters created by Reeves and Winter. I imagine I actually used to like the sequel, Bogus Journey, more but could be wrong.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/YoungFrankenstein.jpg

Young Frankenstein

“I am not a Frankenstein, I am a Fronkensteen!”

I think this is a film that would definitely make it onto the list but again been so long since I last saw it. I only remember individual moments/aspects rather than the film as a whole. Those being the famous dance number, the brilliance of the whole cast, Abby Normal and the magnificence of just about everything Marty Feldman did as Igor.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Crow.jpg

The Crow

“Tell them death is coming for them tonight. Tell them Eric Draven sends his regards.”

One of the early comic book movie successes, this dark and atmospheric film is excellent. I think. Again not seen it in so long I don't know if it actually lives up to what I have in my mind. I do seem to remember for sure being very impressed by Brandon Lee's performance however. Along with the general look of the film.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Goonies.jpg

Goonies

“Goonies never say die!”

Like Bill and Ted a real childhood favourite (even if Sloth did scare the crap out of me as a kid) that I haven't revisited in way too long. I just remember it being a lot of fun and being a part of those great fantasy comedies for the whole family that were big in the 80s – Back to the Future, Princess Bride, Big, Gremlins, Flight of the Navigator, D.A.R.Y.L etc

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/AddamsFamily.jpg

Addams Family

“We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Adams, this Mamushka is for you.”

I remember the two Addams Family films being truly ghoulish treats with some fantastic performances from actors and actresses who just seemed born to play these parts – Angelica Huston, Christina Ricci, Christopher Lloyd and Raul Julia in particular. Would however need to see them again as I don't think I've actually seen them all the way through this century!!!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Beetlejuice.jpg

Beetlejuice

“I'm the ghost with the most, babe.”

Similar to the previous films this is another dark, ghoulish treat but with a bit more of an edge to it. Just a perfect film for Burton to make and has what I remember to be a great performance from Michael Keaton. And I really quite loved Winona Ryder round about this time (Edward Scissorhands, Heathers etc)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/BattleRoyale.jpg

Battle Royale

“So today's lesson is...you kill each other off til there's only one left. Nothing's against the rules.”

Only seen this film the once about 7 years ago maybe and while I don't remember much about the film itself I remember it rather blew my mind. For the kind of film it is however would really need to see how it held up to repeat viewings

Honourable Mentions - Drama

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/FindingNeverland.jpg

Finding Neverland

“You find a glimmer of happiness in this world, there's always someone who wants to destroy it.”

A charming, heartening film, which features a wonderful central performance from Johnny Depp. As J.M. Barrie he delivers an understated and very touching performance, capturing a joyous and whimsical nature. As someone who has always seemed like a bit of a big kid at heart, Depp is just about perfectly cast as Barrie. Oh and it's so nice not to have someone butcher a Scottish accent for once! :D

While both Depp and Kate Winslet are in great form it's the young Freddie Highmore as Peter who is the true star here. He puts in a fantastic performance, one of the best I've ever seen from a child actor.

With some great sets and top class costume design this is a quality period drama. A film that is joyous and uplifting, but is also very moving and indeed heartbreaking.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/12AngryMen.jpg

12 Angry Men

“It's not easy to raise my hand and send a boy off to die without talking about it first.”

Expertly constructed legal drama. Almost the whole film takes place in one room, with nothing other than talk really. It could so easily be dull but the writing and performances ensure it is engaging and riveting throughout.

The great accomplishment of the film is that each character is able to be developed as a unique individual with their own qualities and their own voice. Whether it be the seeming old, doddery man whose mind can be just as sharp as everyone else, or the men who have entered with a prejudice, determined to render a guilty verdict no matter the arguements

And at the end the men who have come from all different walks of life go their seperate ways. We never find out if the young man on trial is actually guilty of his accused crime or not, and while it would be nice to know in a way, it doesn't really matter. That's not what the film is about

In a way this is a film that's similar to Mr Smith Goes to Washington. In Mr Smith it's about politics but here it shows how wonderful and idealistic the legal system can be but also how polluted and small minded it can be. Without Henry Fonda's character to speak up it seems sure it would be a surefire guilty verdict without any great thought

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/ToKillaMockingbird.jpg

To Kill a Mockingbird

“Neighbours bring food with death, and flowers with sickness, and little things in between. Boo was our neighbor.
He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a knife......and our lives.”

Perhaps my favourite novel of all time is one of the great screen translations ever made. And a large part of that is down to the incredible performance of Gregory Peck, and the character he helps create. He doesn't have any superpowers. He doesn't wear a cape. But Atticus Finch is one of cinema's great heroes.

Can't really think what else to say about this one just now, but just an absolute American classic

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/WalktheLine.jpg

Walk the Line

“You wear black 'cause you can't find anything else to wear? You found your sound 'cause you can't play no better? You tried to kiss me because "it just happened"? You should try to take credit for something every once in a while, John.”

The fact that I adore the music of Johnny Cash, and indeed the man, is a large part of why I like this film so much. The other part is the excellent performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as Johnny and June Cash respectively. Both of them are tremendous, both in terms of 'acting' and also singing. Together they have a wonderful romantic chemistry.

Telling the tale of Johnny Cash's life it takes us from his childhood through to the height of his popularity, without glossing over the personal problems that were a large factor in his life. It's not original whatsoever in those terms, it's a well-worn structure for a film (particularly biopics) but is made something a little bit special by the two central performances, and by the fantastic soundtrack that Cash's catalogue of songs is able to provide.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/BillyElliot.jpg

Billy Elliot

“I don't want a childhood. I want to be a ballet dancer.”

A really charming and sweet-natured film which ends up as one of the more uplifting films I've seen. It's well written, excellently acted and just puts a little smile on my face whenever I watch it.

Earlier on I said that Freddie Highmore put in one of the best child performances I've ever seen; this is another. Jamie Bell is fantastic here, giving a really touching, natural performance. He's not alone in impressing in the acting stakes however. Gary Lewis is great as his father, going from angry and ashamed, to showing support and pride for his son. And Julie Walters too is excellent.

Just a great, heart-warming film.

Just missing out was The People vs Larry Flynt.

Have you seen Neverland and Mockingbird?

Nope, would have mentioned them if I had. Mockingbird is definitely on the list. Am I right in saying Finding Neverland is a fully-fledged J.M. Barrie biography? Or is it more Peter Pan-story orientated? Because I'm not sure I like the Pan story enough to watch it if it is.

Honourable Mentions – Thriller

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Rope.jpg

Rope

“Good and evil, right and wrong were invented for the ordinary average man, the inferior man, because he needs them.”

Another great Hitchcock film. This one came very, very close to making the list. It's a tale told in real time with little action and lots of dialogue, but at no point does it drag. The performance of the three main actors and Hitchcock's direction give the film a lot of energy and tension. And the plot itself is a wonderfully ghoulish idea which just grabbed my interest right away.

One particular scene that I love is the long holding shot on the trunk as the maid clears the dishes off of it. The focus just sticks there for seemingly ages, ramping up the tension more and more by the second as we wonder if it will be opened or not. Expertly orchestrated

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Collateral.jpg

Collateral

“Of all the cabbies in L.A. I get Max: Sigmund Freud meets Dr. Ruth.”

Really gripping, effective thriller with two strong turns from Cruise and Fox who engage in a battle of wits. These are the kind of roles I prefer to see Cruise in (this, Minority Report etc); when he does comedy or the hero I find him quite smarmy and slick.

Mann makes the film look really great, giving us lovely hues of colour throughout – blue, purple, grey etc. It creates a really effective, atmospheric look for Los Angeles.

I also remember it being quite funny; very dark humour, but funny nonetheless. While the film does perhaps lose a little of its power once they actually get out of the cab it remains a fabulously entertaining film throughout.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/RunLolaRun.jpg

Run Lola Run

“What happened to you? Did you run here?”

This is an extremely fast paced, and at times absolutely bonkers film. Quite often it feels more like an MTV music video than an actual movie. But I mean that in the best way possible. Add the incredible pace to it's short running time, and it's just a pure adrenaline rush from start to finish.

While the 'what if' scenario isn't exactly new in movies (Sliding Doors, Groundhog Day etc) I don't think anything has done it with so much energy, and been so perfect at showing just how the smallest of things can completely change your life. The odd little change here and there and everything goes down a different direction.

Franka Potente is wonderfully engaging as the titular Lola, as well as being sexy as hell. With some frantic and inventive direction I was left pretty much breathless the first time I saw it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/Jaws.jpg

Jaws

“You're gonna need a bigger boat.”

One of the all time classic blockbusters! A film that mixes action and suspense wonderfully. The performances of the three main actors (especially Robert Shaw) are all excellent as well, especially when they are actually out on the boat and begin to bond against the threat of death that surrounds them.

The first half is good but it's when they get out on the boat and it turns into a three hander that it really goes up a few levels in terms of quality and excitement. And from the moment they realise that the shark is actually hunting them it is a wonderful edge of the seat ride through to the end.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/PhoneBooth.jpg

Phone Booth

“If you hang up, I will kill you.”
I wasn't greatly interested in this originally but just stumbled across it on TV one night and was instantly hooked. While Joel Schumacher's direction was never going to threaten the Oscars, he does a very good job making it all feel gripping and extremely energetic.

I have never really liked Colin Farrell but was very impressed with him here. He carries the film very well, showing off the anger, fear and confusion that he is suffering

Considering the limitations the film places upon itself, it does a fantastic job of creating and maintaining the tension and sheer terror of the situation. Just really good fun.

104. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter...and Spring

“Lust awakens the desire to possess. And that awakens the intent to murder.”

A beautiful, visually stunning film that contemplates life, death, love, redemption and everything in between. It's a simple little film, with just one set and only a handful of characters but is so tranquil, poetic and ethereal that it really leaves a mark. The film is full of incredible images, most notably of the Buddhist monastery which floats in the middle of a lake surrounded by mountains.

The film is wonderfully performed by the actors, especially considering how sparse the dialogue is. Yeong-su Oh as the Old Monk is notably excellent. A wonderful little gem.

Good movie, I watched it several years ago and I really dig the part where he paints with the cat's tail. Nifty to see it show up on someone's list, as I don't know how popular it is.

Honourable Mentions – Action

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/PointBreak.jpg

Point Break

“You're saying the FBI's gonna pay me to learn to surf?”

This is a film that could perhaps have snuck into the actual top 100 but I completely forgot about. It's just a fantastically fun film with some great action. Over the top, overblown and rather daft but when the end result is so much fun you don't really care.

It's wonderfully fast-paced with some great sequences and stunts. In particular the skydiving sequences, and the on foot chase scene which is just brilliant, probably the best I've seen.

Swayze, Reeves and Busey all throw in very engaging and charming performances. A lot of the film (particularly the dialogue and surfer spirituality) is actually rather daft and cheesy but somehow it works. And works brillantly.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/TheRock.jpg

The Rock

“I have a unique knowledge of this prison facility. I was formerly a guest here.”

Wow two Nicolas Cage films in a row?!!! As someone who's not much of a fan that's quite a shock.

Some more enjoyable nonsense here. This is just an excellent blockbuster, just about a perfect example of how to make an action film. Moving along at a lightning pace you barely have time to catch your breath, or allow your brain to do much thinking about the film and the plor.

Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery make for an engaging double act, and there are some great actors filling the villain roles – Ed Harris, John C McGinley, David Morris etc.

One of the last great pure action films

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/FaceOff.jpg

Face/Off

“I want to take his face...off! Eyes, nose, skin, teeth. It's coming off!"

Absolutely ridiculous but highly entertaining nonsense from John Woo. The premise is just so stupid that's it's brilliant! The film is a relentless, frantic adrenaline rush with some humour thrown in.

Cage and Travolta both do a very good job (Cage in particular is really entertaining, his style which can usually be so annoying works here), but it is probably Woo and his direction that is the real star of the show. Some of the action sequences he delivers are just mesmerising, full of slow motion, bullets galore and yes some white doves! :D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/RunningMan.jpg

Running Man

“I'm not into politics. I'm into survival.”
I won't argue about this being a particularly 'great' film but I do think it's fantastically enjoyable, a real guilty pleasure.

In many ways it's a bit of classic 80s action cinema. You have the muscle-bound hero (Schwarzenegger) taking on people who are clear villains, some cheesy action and gruesome deaths; either followed by or preceded by a puntastic quip delivered in that style that only Arnie could. For example after cutting someone in half with a chainsaw he explains that they “had to split.” :D

Schwarzenegger is never likely to win many awards for his acting (well there are always the Razzies I suppose) but for this type of film he's just about perfect, and here again he is very entertaining. Oh and Richard Dawson makes for one slimy, nasty bugger as the host of the show Arnie takes part in

The film is also heavy on satire and sadly with 6 years still to go until the date the film is set in, I wouldn't be all that surprised if we end up there by then.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/LongKissGoodnight.jpg

The Long Kiss Goodnight

“Do not make an assumption, cause when you make an assumption, you make an ass outta you; and umption!”

It was a close call between this and another of Shane Black's films, The Last Boy Scout. In the end this was just edged it, although the fact I watched this recently and haven't seen Boy Scout for a few years maybe gave it an unfair advantage.

Like most of my picks here it has a fairly ludicrous premise, but allows you to overlook it with large dollops of action and comedy which distract your brain just enough that you go along with it.

The film features two excellent central performances from Samuel L Jackson and Geena Davis. Davis in particular is absolutely wonderful, a real charismatic presence as she jumps back and forth from being an everyday soccer mom to the absolutely terrifying, borderline psychotic assassin.

Love Point Break and The Running Man. Even I think The Rock isn't bad, and that's with my hatred of its two leads and indifference to action films. So that must be a bloody great action film. :D

I knew you liked Point Break but nice to see some love for The Running Man, wasn't sure how that would go down on here. And yeah that must be a great action film then! :D

Just out of interest are there any genres you do like? :p So far while I've been on here, although there are exceptions, I think (and correct me if wrong) you've mentioned your indifference for sci-fi, western, film noir, sentimental/whimsical films and now action.

Not everyone's Top 100 has to be the same, bra. If everyone on here all had the same films that'd be boring as sh*t.

Au contraire, Doctor. I loved the originality of this list. Like ash said, if everyone just listed the films you're "supposed" to list, it would get pretty damn boring. Lists lacking The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club and all those other "correct" picks are more exciting to me because they at least show some individuality. I don't like people that follow the crowd.

Not that those films aren't great, of course, and I certainly wouldn't think less of anyone who picks them. But when I see people reel off lists I've seen time and time again it just bores me.

Sorry you found it 'turrible' but not everyone's tastes can be the same. I'm guessing if you made a list of your 100 favourite films I'd probably dislike/hate some of them as well. Just the way it goes. As I said at the start and throughout I wasn't advocating that these were all great films, just my favourites. I'll admit some aren't particulary 'good' films but I have my reasons for loving them.

And I'm 24.

Horror,gangster/crime and drama are king with me.

BTW, I'm not indifferent to Westerns. I don't like them. :D I also don't care for war films and fantasy. Just one of the (many) reasons I've never been called a fanboy. :p

That seems quite strange. We agree on a lot of films and seem to have very similar tastes and yet when it comes strictly to genres we seem miles apart!!! :D I don't like horror films unless they have a comedic or satirical slant to them. I only have a few films that could be termed as 'horror' on DVD - American Werewolf in London, Dawn of the Dead, The Frighteners, Arachnophobia, Lost Boys, Casper (well it's about ghosts isn't it? :p)

And really not a fan of gangster or crime films, particularly if they are based on actual people and events.

Thanks for taking the time. For me it would be too much time as I would have a hard time making a Top Thousand movie list, having seen over 10, 000 movies. Probably much easier to do it by genre and/or country. I was pleasantly surprised by your inclusion of Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter....Spring. That movie is a gem and would make my top hundred, if I was ever to make one.

Thank you very much. And yeah Spring, Summer... stand out as little surprising as it is probably the most high brow, arty film on the list. Perhaps as I get older and tastes mature more like that may sneak onto the list

And thanks for bumping this as it just reminded me that I still had some honourable mention categories in mind.

I watched your list and I can say it is pretty good, though there were some films which I haven't even heard of.So some comments:
My favorites from your list are Psycho,King's Speech,Raiders Of The Lost Ark(why none of the sequels made the list?),Saving Private Ryan,Spider-Man 2,The Mummy,Pulp Fiction,Leon,Seven Samurai,Forrest Gump(but there's no way I would put it below Cast Away),LOTR

I'm glad that you reminded me about Austing Powers and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.I remember enjoying both so I will rewatch them.

I am interested in these: Heathers,The Lost Boys,Lethal Weapon(my father loves it actually but I never get around to watch it),Ferris Bueller's Day Off.They are all from the 80s,one of the decades from which I haven't seen much films,so I'm looking forward to seeing them.

I have 14 films of my top 100 list in your first 100 positions here. Most of these are concentrated in the first few places. Easily, my favorite from your list would be number 67. Some films in your list I find rather mediocre but, from those of your list that I have watched, nothing here strikes me as bad, all tend to be average or better for me.

Definitely liking what I see. There are quite a few movies here that I don't particularly care for but I love that this list doesn't look like it was copied and pasted from a critics' poll. We do have quite a few in common though, ten of the movies from this list are also on mine plus one of your "Could Have Made Its" and two of your Honorable Mentions. There are also several on your list that almost made mine.

70. Being John Malkovich

“That portal is mine, and it must be sealed forever for the love of God!”

One of the oddest little films I've ever seen. Certainly of films that have become fairly mainstream. It has a bizarre central concept surrounded by weird touches at every turn. It is a bewildering, mesmerizing experience. You could argue it doesn't add up too much in the end but for me that doesn't really matter too much when you've had such a fun journey getting there.

John Malkovich is an absolute sensation here, just having glorious fun with the role. And the scene where he enters his own brain is amongst the most entertaining and memorable scenes I've seen in quite a while. Cameron Diaz too deserves a mention for giving what I find to be her most interesting and intriguing performance.

The reason it isn't higher on the list is that I felt it lacked a bit of heart, especially when compared with other offbeat comedies. But it is a beautifully crafted film. A true original.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/SinCity.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/SinCity2.jpg

69. Sin City

“An old man dies. A little girl lives. Fair trade.”

Visually stunning, this was like nothing I had ever seen before. It is a brutal, breathtaking and visually stunning film. It really is like the graphic novels have been brought to life, each shot being an almost clone of the comic panels they are based on. The black and white effect with just the odd dash of vibrant colour works spectacularly well for the film.

Of the three stories, which interweave in a Pulp Fiction style, my personal favourite is actually that featuring Bruce Willis (That Yellow B*****d). While the story of Marv steals the show for most people it was Bruce Willis' turn that for me added a little heart and character into the film.

While it is undeniably a dark and violent tale there is also something rather beautiful about it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/OBrother.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/OBrother2.jpg

68. O Brother, Where Art Thou?

“This band of miscreants, this very evening, interfered with a lynch mob in the performance of its duty.”

The usual brand of quirkiness from the Coen brothers here. So we have some madcap situations, some deliriously odd dialogue, memorable characters and some wonderful humour. Throw in some beautiful cinematography and one of most offbeat but engaging soundtracks I've ever heard.

I think this is also my favourite George Clooney performance. I'm not a huge fan of his really but his charming ways and willingness to send up his slick, dapper ways make this a very entertaining performance. All added up it gives the film a somewhat mythical and lyrical feel.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/PrincessMononoke.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/PrincessMononoke2.jpg

67. Princess Mononoke

"What I want is for the humans and the forest to live in peace!"

A majestically beautiful film, this really is an epic fantasy. Detailing the struggle between man and nature it is full of mythical creatures, gods, demons and spirits. The animation is gorgeous, especially when it comes to realising the beauty of nature.

Not as whimsical as many of the other Ghibli films this is certainly more of an adult film, with some rather strong violence. It is still however able to prove itself to be magical and touching stuff. For me this is Miyazaki's masterpiece.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/ManontheMoon.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/JayDee87/MovieForums/MoFo%20100/ManontheMoon3-1.jpg

66. Man on the Moon

“Andy, you have to look inside and ask this question: who are you trying to entertain - the audience or yourself?”

And yet another Jim Carrey film. :D This is a very fascinating film, well for me at least. It covers a number of subjects that I find interesting including Andy Kaufman, the sitcom Taxi and his wrestling feud with Jerry Lawler. Indeed for me it's a real, if slightly bizarre, treat to see the actual Jerry Lawler and the actual members of Taxi playing themselves; and in the case of Danny DeVito, someone else

Carrey is magnificent in this, recreating Kaufman down to an absolute tee. He is able to nail the character that most people know from stage and screen, but keeps it from being a mere impersonation by also delving deeper into this flawed, enigmatic man. A man who finds no great pleasure in fame and suffers frustration when he feels he is being typecast. It is one of my favourite performances by any actor, how he wasn't nominated for an Oscar still surprises me.

I believe this is a beautiful film which is in equal parts funny and moving

What a great set!

Welcome everyone to JayDee's 100...and 8! 108 Favourite Films

I did have the list cut down to 100 but in the few weeks it's taken me to get organised to post it I've either remembered or seen 8 other films that I wanted to include. But I then felt bad about cutting films that had already made it. So I didn't cut them. So we have 108.

Now as you can see by my percentages on the movie lists I still have a lot of films, many supposed classics, to see. As a result I was planning on delaying making a list for a while until I had seen a larger selection of them. However I decided to post a list just now and then in a year or two, when I will hopefully have seen a lot more, post a new list and compare the two. Similar to what Ash has done recently.

One thing I'd like to make clear is that this is my favourite films list. Not a list of the best films I've seen or must-see films - my favourite films. As a result we have a mix of critically acclaimed, award winning films, big popular blockbusters, small little films, guilty pleasures, some absolute garbage etc.

When it comes to artistic merit there are some that are full of it, some that are lacking in it and then some which are completely devoid of it!!! :D

I think it's quite an eclectic little mix. Hopefully even if you don't like many of the films on here you'll enjoy reading through it. Any comments (however abusive they may become with some of these picks! :p) are welcome.

Oh and trying to write something for so many films means that I repeat myself quite a lot I believe. In particular look out for the word charm/charming which I use 183 times!!! :)

Anyway, I think that's enough of an introduction. On with the films...

I know this thread is old but I just want to say good list, Jaydee and I like how you put so much work into this, you must of been having alot of fun doing this I know I would. There's some movies I've seen which I'll list which ones I liked the most.

- Heathers
- Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Ark
- Jurassic Park
- Die Hard
- Back to the Future
- Spider Man 2
- Lethal Weapon
- Terminator 2
- Bourne Ultimatum
-Truman Show

I've seen some more that I haven't listed also. I wonder if you will have an updated list by now, While reading you list, I liked the special mention idea or adding a certain sequel to the first movie's review to avoid filling your list up with sequels and giving the standalone films that you liked the most a shot on the list also.

Thanks for the compliments MovieFan. I sort of have an updated list but it's not done and has kind of been abandoned. Was working on it for a while and had intended on it being the most epic list possible in terms of effort and work etc. But yeah as I said for a variety of reasons that project has been completely abandoned for quite a while now. Perhaps one day I'll get back to it and a new, updated list will see the light of day
