i've spent far too much time working on this today.
it has been nearly 3 years (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=17549) since i did my first Top 100 list. like i was saying in the Shoutbox earlier, this isn't an exact science, but for the time being, it's close enough.

Great list so far!
So ash, without spoiling it for those who haven't watched it, what did you think of the ending of The Letter? Was it perfect or would you have preferred something else?
I also think that Newsies is criticized far too often, but what about it makes it one of your faves?
Oh, and since I didn't comment the first time, what's your fave part of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly?

In this context, "eclectic" means that there's a very unusual mixture of films on the list so far - whether or not that's bad is up to you. I don't think this is the most eclectic favourites list I've seen on this site - that honour should probably go to Linespalsy.

So ash, without spoiling it for those who haven't watched it, what did you think of the ending of The Letter? Was it perfect or would you have preferred something else?
the first time i watched this movie, i didn't like the ending at all. but then i watched it again and decided i had completely misjudged the entire movie.
afterall, the entire film build up (for example, Davis's constant nervous knitting "web of lies) is a fantastic climax; the entire outside scene leading up to the stabbing was brilliantly done.
I also think that Newsies is criticized far too often, but what about it makes it one of your faves?
um... probably the fact that Mom took me to the theater to see it on opening day when i was only 8-years-old?
no, honestly, i think Newsies is one of those movies that made a wonderful transition from my childhood to adulthood; it's a pretty fabulous musical for a non-animated Disney film based really terribly on historical events. i still love just as much - if not more - all the dancing and singing numbers.
not that long ago i found out that the music from this film was written by the same crew who did High School Musical, another popular Disney musical. i can't vouch for that one, though.
plus, Newsies is definitely one of my favorite movies to quote. it's just filled with amazingly bad dialogue. :)
Oh, and since I didn't comment the first time, what's your fave part of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly?
it's been a few years since i've seen it now. it's not my favorite scene but off the top of my head, the most vivid is the one where Bauby has the stroke in his car. it was so terrifying.
i also really liked the opening scene, too, though. it starts out straight from the point of view of a person who is basically being held prisoner in his own body. we see his frustration at not being able to communicate with those around him, and not only do we understand his frustration, but we also immediately see his charm and wit through the voice-over monologue that's going on inside of his head.

That's one career all females have in common, whether we like it or not: being a woman. Sooner or later, we've got to work at it, no matter how many other careers we've had or wanted. And in the last analysis, nothing's any good unless you can look up just before dinner or turn around in bed, and there he is. Without that, you're not a woman. I didn't like Wolf Creek either... but I love The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Just out of interest Ash, with such a large turnover of films do you really think all these films are better than those from your previous list? Or do you think a lot has to do with the freshness of them in your mind?
Just I struggled at times trying to work out if I wanted to put a film on the list either because it deserved it, or did I just feel it should go on because I've seen it recently and it's nice and fresh. If you know what I mean

I managed to stop (most) of this by making two rules for my list. Firstly, there isn't a film on my list that I saw for the first time within the last year. Secondly, there isn't a film on my list that I've not seen at least five times.
I felt this meant that the films I had on my list were films that I truly loved, rather than one I was just impressed with or one that I didn't feel held up to repeat viewings.

to answer your question, no, i don't feel that all the movies from this list are better than those that were bumped off the other one; but i do think some of them are. :) there are various reasons for this. it could be like you said, the "freshness" of having just seen it. sometimes you change your mind on things on repeat viewings.
it also is because i've watched a lot of movies in the past 3 years that i'd never seen, and there's still so many visionary films i've not seen. it's so daunting thinking about it, but i try to watch as much as i can. this is why it'd be hard for me to judge things based on how honeykid does it - for one thing, i rarely watch movies more than once in a short period of time. sometimes i'll rewatch things a couple years later, but the only things that get repeated viewings from me are movies i've loved a very long time.
maybe i should make a list after this is over of all the films that were bumped off, explaining why.
nah, forget it. sounds tedious as hell.

*takes this into consideration, delays publishing of revised list by another six years*
Thanks for taking the time to give me an answer Ash. I was just wondering both with the large turnover, and also looking at my list now there are some I've seen or re-seen recently where I either wonder if it should be that high, or even be there at all.

Five times?!!! Wow there are some films I absolutely adore and are definite stick-ons on my list that I've maybe not seen that many times. I seem a lot more like Ash in terms of how often I watch and rewatch films. I just don't like to watch films or TV shows over and over in case I get bored with them, or at the very least my love for them dips.

Love seeing Little Women on the list. I love that film as well.
Congrats on finishing your list Ash. http://images.paraorkut.com/img/pics/glitters/b/bravo-7466.gif
Of your top 10 I loved Paper Moon (could get into my top 100 with repeat viewings), think I enjoyed Sideways (but it's been so long I'm not sure) and Spirited Away was so close to making my list. My favourite of those 10 however is Aladdin. No idea what happened with that one as it was on my list, round about the 60/70 mark, but obviously when I've been re-writing and fiddling with my list it's got lost along the way
Oh yeah and the two that I loved from your previous group but didn't mention as they were about to appear on mine were Eternal Sunshine and The Princess Bride.
Great top Ten Ash :yup: congratulations
Awesome list Ash.Great choice with Spirited Away I was blown away by that film to.:yup:
I remember seeing Spirited Away 4 years ago, transfixed... Both Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies are my favourite Ghibli films.
