About five years ago, I was heavily into chess. I had been playing chess for many years prior to that, but I think that was about the peak of "my chess game". I would rent chess books and video documentaries on it from the library to hone my game, and I did in the process get much better. Even when I was a kid I was good at the game, but as I grew older I just became beastly at it, studying it only sealed the deal. I even considered joining a chess team in high school, but I didn't want to have too many extracurricular activities getting in the way of studies. I just really wanted to pass to get out and move on to bigger and better things. Anyway, I guess it was after high school that I fell out of chess because no one seemed to share the interest I had.

Anyway,

The other night my two friends and myself decided to go to my local cigar shop for some cigars. My friend just returned from a tour in Afghanistan so I decided to buy him one. Anyway, while I was getting the cigars, they were in the back room playing chess. When I came to them I was shocked that they were into the game when I didn't think any of my friends were. (This is so cool). However, even though my chess-eye was rusty I was still seeing two and sometimes, though not as much as it used to be, three moves ahead. So I couldn't help myself. I was telling either friend after they played their move, "You should have..." (haha, I know I'm a jerk, but I was just excited I guess). Finally after one of my friends won, the gauntlet was thrown, and he challenged me. I was a tad nervous cause now I had to put my money were my mouth was and if I lost I'd look like a fool.

So then we started playing, I gave him first move. And immediately from there I gained my confidence again. I started dominating the board with two, to rarely, (need to hone this again), three step ahead attacks, pronged attacks, and the like. I started put him in check within less than five minutes and check mate in about ten. It wasn't all one sided though, my friends a pretty sharp guy so he had me from time to time.

Anyway,

I'm getting my chess game on again, like picking up a musical instrument again. I'm going to dust off my old chess board and bring it to my friends house every Saturday before Deadlands, (a D&D game set in the west), so we can throw down and play again. And now that I'm getting back into school, I think I will pick up a "Chess Club/Team" activity. I think it's good for me and will make me enjoy my school experience much more. Plus I may get some really nice pointers on how to improve my game.

I thought I'd share this on Misc. Chat because it's something positive, a recent joy that came into my life again, and thought I'd get some feedback. Any chess lovers/players out there?

That's cool man, it always feels great to have a hobby, especially one you share with friends. I actually did something similar, I bought a skateboard two days ago and this is the first time I have touched a board in about 6 years. It was a total impulse buy, but I've been having fun with it for the past couple days.

Anyway, I can't play chess but I am a mean checkers player ;)

Now is riding a skateboard like riding a bike in the sense that you maintain your core balance to ride it even after years of not riding it? I imagine though that you still have to practice with it if you want to do tricks with it.

If I may say sir, (please don't take offense), but Checkers = Lame Sauce. :p

I started playing checkers on the computer against random people. I AM ALWAYS LOSING. It's something I got into as a kid. My mom is a master checker player. I could sometimes beat her. But these people online are too good. However, I'm learning. I'm starting to get to a point where they may have more checkers than me, but they can't get my kings, so I make them move around the board a lot until they just give up and then the computer has to finish the game. And sometimes the computer still beats me. *sigh*

I wanna learn how to play Chess. I used to know many years ago. I played it a few times on the computer, but I was clueless.

I never really got into Checkers because the objective seemed to blunt for me, (personally anyway). Chess is about strategy and finesse; psychological warfare, (keeping your opponent on the defensive, while being cautiously aggressive, so they make mistakes); and a bit of magic too if you can guide your opponents eye to a false attack and blindside them with something that takes a stronger piece away, (knights are usually best at this). Although I seem to come across this, there are checkers players, then chess players. They each got something going for them, but I'm definitely a chess man myself.

I've always been a blunt person.

I like playing chess, but I'm not really any good. Most of my games with friends end up with a bunch of pawns and a king on both sides.

But yeah, comparing checkers to chess is ridiculous. I mean, the amount of added complexity when you imagine even giving one checkers piece added powers or restrictions would take some math to figure out. Now when all the pieces have their own style of movement. That is a strange world only some can comprehend intuitively.

The Wire has some interesting things to say about chess!

I can always beat my friends but I know I'm not that good. Billiards is more my way to win bets. Apparently Kubrick played chess inbetween shots.

I had a dream about chess last night except the game board had far too many pieces and I couldn't remember how to play.

Which is strange because I know how to play chess.
