Since this forum is full of friendly, helpful people, I thought I'd go ahead and ask this question. I have been researching my family tree for a little more than a year now. As of right now I'm using the free version of RootsMagic 4 to store my data. I'm looking to upgrade to a full program with the idea of eventually doing family history books to share with my family. Right now I'm torn between Family Tree Maker 2011 and the full version of RootsMagic 4. I wondered if anyone out there has any experience with genealogy software and had any recommendations.

There's a software for this?
I feel so old.

Apparently Family Tree Maker has been around for 20-some years (I had no idea). Software and the internet make it much easier to collaberate and share info. Even without subscribing to a pay genealogy site like Ancestry I have found some distant, and not-so-distant, relatives. I'm glad there's a computer program to store and organize it though, but my personal organization skills really suck.

Genes Reunited and Ancestry are the two I know about. My mum's into this in a big way, so I'll ask her if she uses any other sites.
