"You're so original, you remind me of Cyndi Lauper!" I think it was that embarrassment to Ireland, Louis Walsh, who said this a few weeks ago.

Can't stand it for a number of reasons, the chief one being the belief it fosters that all you need to do to be a pop star is practice in your bedroom and queue up once a year and hope that Cowell and his army think you're good/quirky/have a dead relative enough to go further.

What happened to forming a band with a bunch of like-minded people, practising until your fingers bleed and playing in p*ss holes of clubs and pubs in the hope of a) getting better and b) someone noticing you? You'll not get anywhere this way without some talent, of course, but that's not needed on X Factor.

All you need to do is to be able to project the image that Cowell thinks is current and will shift the most units. The production team will do the rest...

The Marcel Marceau tribute act? If I were one of the other acts I'd be pretty brassed off if those pretty little chancers with their vast choir of invisible backing singers win.

It's pretty clear that Cowell and co have been pushing Wand Erection, the Scouse girl and the bloke from the early stages which would make sense because they're all varying shades of bland and malleable, even by the show's standards.

me too Lud. I like that guy, and I do watch X Factor despite agreeing with everything Tattyhead says ;). They're all fairly bland performers that's why Matt stood out singing that song. Rebecca looks like a sweet girl but she's in a long line of girl ballad singers - if you listened to her on a record I doubt you'd buy it. One Direction - jeez yet another made up boyband..yawn. Mary was a great pub singer along the lines of the one who used to get up and belt 'em out in the British Legion at closing time when I was a kid. There must be hundreds of kids like Cher in singing and dancing classes around the country. I went to my friends daughters Saturday club Christmas show last week and there was two kids who stood out as having at least as much talent as Cher and far more than the other one who left, Katie.

It's lazy tv. I must have no taste cos everyone else in the family leaves the room when it's on, but me and the dog watch it :D

It fosters a belief that's completely true. to be a pop star. Your confusing genres as far as I'm concerned. Name one hopeful 'recording artist(s)' who has accomplished success working their way from the garage with bloody finger tips to the main stage at 'Rock in Rio' besides Lady Gaga who's the exception to the rule.

You'l struggle. I have this conversation with a hardened Rock/Metal fan at work every Saturday when this show is on. I relate to the irritation you guys feel towards the style of music and the manner they reach the top, but we shouldn't begrudge the contestants.

I used to be in a band called Wired to the Moon, a Northern Irish band who played **** holes around Belfast. Were gradually got better and our shows got bigger. We just played for the fun of it mind. But the point is our inspiration was Iron Maiden, Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, Trivium, Rage Against etc. We were doing it the way they did, the way our particular genre demanded.

However Cher, who just got booted off X-Factor tonight. Her inspiration is Cheryl Cole, an artist with a fantastic album, none of which she wrote (music of lyrics) and which she refuses to perform live. I know rite, at what point does she even qualify as a musician...? she's not, she's a 'recording artist' kept alive by the Radio one chart show and the UK's love of **** pop music. She's (Cher) after a record deal, a contract that promises her the use of a studio and some talented writers. You want her to play bars and dingy clubs, with what? She has no material. Simon Cowell and the XFactor is not responsible for the way the pop music industry is.

I leave you with a song, It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll, not so if you want to push out a pop album.

Yes, there have always been and always will be 'manufactured' acts, brought together by a savvy manager, from The Monkees through The Bay City Rollers (and even The Sex Pistols) to Take That and The Spice Girls, but the last decade has seen the Cowell approach conquer all.

He's lucky in a way that so few people buy singles these days but the flip side is that his acts need to tour regularly if they're to make any serious dough.

You ask about pop singers who've grafted? The days of Madonna, Duran Duran are probably gone forever in the mainstream but even the manufactured bands I mentioned earlier all had to start off playing dives just like you did. Just like I did.

I'll say it again but The X Factor makes kids believe this isn't necessary. Queue up, emote a bit to the producers (while mentioning that you're doing this for your kids/dead gran) and hopefully get through to the televised section. If the show didn't exist then 99% of the hopefuls would be auditioning for Big Brother or whatever other reality show is in vogue.

For every Cheryl Cole there's a Katy Perry who's grafted, taken the knocks and come back stronger. I'm not saying that Princess Cheryl hasn't worked hard (and I think Girls Aloud are by far the best of Cowell's crop) but in terms of her music career it's all down to reality shows.

Well, I have to admit I'm surprised that One Direction didn't win. But third? Did Simon sabotage them? I have trouble believing he made a mistake that big. I didn't hear it, but I was told they sung "Torn", which is a terrible choice for a boyband or any group with more than one singer. How bad was their performance?

TBH, it sounds better than I thought it would... But that's not the same as sounding good. I don't like the arrangement, for a start, and, as I thought and IMO, it just doesn't work with a vocal group. A single, strong male voice may've been able to do it, but I still wouldn't like the arrangement.

Thanks for digging that up, though, LuD.

My favourite went two weeks ago, Kitty. I never spend money on these things though, don't vote. I'd like to see Little Mix or Amelia win.

And let Tulisa advertise her perfume with her arm, dear me. I didn't even know it was the name of her perfume until it was reported...

Thankfully that Craig went last week, what a boring singer.

The only one I like is Janet Devlin.

Ellie Goulding is very similar but the voice isn't annoying like Devlins. Liked her at the start but her voice started to grate a few weeks back.

Godoggo
11-23-11, 07:37 PM
Janet relies on that hiccupy thing she does with her voice too much, but if she would tone it down she would be really good.

I liked Kitty when she did that Bjork song. Other than that she was a little too shouty. Same with Amelia.

Craig was boring, but his audition wasn't. I think maybe Gary made him sing boring songs. I think the contestants would probably fair better without their mentors. Gary and Louie are awful.

Holy crap! Jedward!?!? The Irish Dumb & Dumber? If they each only had half a brain, they'd still only have half a brain.

That said, they didn't annoy me on Eurovision this year. Not only that, but I wanted them to win. Have you ever seen Eurovision? It's great. Not the brilliance it used to be, because it's too professional now (even to the point that the UK seem to take it seriously now :() but there's still some, what I call, proper Eurovision acts. As Europe has grown, they've had to have a semi-finals to get rid of some countries (and because of the cost of it) and those two semi-finals now usually have the best acts. Well, the acts I like best anyway. :D Too many of them sing in English now. I liked it when just about everyone sung in their own language.

A fanmade video of this years Eurovision entries. As you will see (should you suffer it all) Jedward fit right in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oqGYn-qGbk

These performances are from all over, but I'm sure all the whole Eurovision show is on youtube. I'd expect that the last few years are up.

Are you watching I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! atm? If not, try and find that. It's, possibly, the worst of the reality shows. I think I'd rather watch Dancing On Ice and/or The X Factor than that.

Probably the most memerable winner of recent years.

Probably my favourite of the last 10 years or so.

Lordi is obviously a huge fan of GWAR. :)

I'm secretly fond of Jedward. In Celebrity BB they were so fun. It figures the two Americans that they cast were stark raving should they be allowed out without supervision? crazy. Tara Reid was uncomfortable to watch.

I can't watch things like I am a Celebrity...It's too gross.

I liked them and I would've been fine with them winning. I wanted Jedward to win because countries often try and follow a trend. We've had a lot more rock songs since Lordi won (I remember GWAR from 'back in the day' as the kids say) and, if Jedward had won, maybe we'd have more of the type of stupid acts I like in the years to follow. I don't think there's much more stupid and ridiculous than Jedward. Hence I wanted them to win. :D

My favourite song, the one I'd have had liked to win 'musically', if you will, would've been this one. I like the set, the staging and she sings in her own language.

How have I not heard of Eurovision until now?
Because you live in America? I don't know how well Eurovision travels. Way back when, almost no one sang in English, there wasn't much in the way of staging (as the judges only heard the performances via radio. The public voting started around 2000, I think) so it wasn't very professional. I couldn't see the Americans going with it. I've heard rumours now and again over the years that the US wanted/were going to do their own version, with each State making an entry, but it's not happened and, alas, I doubt it'd be very Eurovision. Well, not what I call Eurovision, anyway. :D

BTW, the semi-finals and final are at the end of May. The Final is usually the last Saturday of May and the two semi's the Wednesday and Thursday before. I'm sure it'll be streamed somewhere online.

She is apparently a bully, and not very nice to people behind the scenes, even two of the judges mentioned it live on one of the shows... they played the sympathy card with her last week, *wipes eyes*.

Is that why that Frankie kid left?

He left because it was set up that he was always going to leave to let Amelia Lilly back after the 'shock' voting off by the judges in the very first live show... oh sorry, did I say that out loud...

I meant, he left because he took cocaine apparently and blabbed about it to the X-Factor bosses, plus too much drinking when he is suppose to be working/training the next day and being a slut.

X Factor voting figures revealed

X Factor voting figures have revealed that winners Little Mix were the most consistent contenders on the show and that flame-haired Janet Devlin won the most weekends, coming out top on each of the first four weeks.

The results of each phone vote were announced shortly after Little Mix, the first group to win the show, were announced winners at a packed Wembley Arena.

At the show’s climax there was just a 4.5% difference between the girl group and runner-up Marcus Collins.

Early favourite Janet Devlin flew to victory in each of the first four voting weeks before a series of bad song choices and fluffing her lines saw her popularity plummet.

Misha B was the luckiest contestant, reaching the final despite receiving the least votes for four out of the eight voting weeks she was on the show.

It also turns out that Frankie Cocozza never really had a chance in the competition, coming in the bottom half of each vote before he was chucked off the show following week five.

It shows that this year’s ‘X Factor’, for whatever reasons, was a far closer competition than the show is accustomed to.

Last year Matt Cardle won all but the first week of the competition, and in 2009 Joe McElderry won each of the last four weeks of the competition by a sizeable margin.

The X Factor voting figures are below ...
