I'll get the ball rolling...

I'm a bum :D

Partially a student, and partially a freelance web developer. I also help produce a morning drive-time radio show, which entails requesting review copies, scheduling interviews, managing the schedule, etc. It's working out pretty well. I'll probably snag a job at the video store or movie theater within the next few months, though, in addition to this stuff.

I work for an elementary school in the Internet Lab (we have two labs here and the other one is Keyboarding) helping kids with math two days out of the week and the rest of the week we do internet stuff.

I help out with the Sound board at my church, I also run the laptop which displays songs up on the screen as well as announcements for other things going on in the church.

Up until recently I was running a small DVD site, but closed it down on account that I didn't have the kind of time to work with it.

I help my dad work on lawnmowers, cars, and anything else that has an engine from time to time. But please, don't call me a "Grease Monkey", I don't care for that term, I've never seen a monkey change the exhaust system on a car.

Here, very soon, I will be (hopefully) joining the ranks of the U.S. Navy and get into the computer field where I will be stationed in one of the many ports here in America. :D

I am also back in control of the DVD section here on Movie Forums to which I have proposed many new features to Chris and we are in the process of bringing some of these to life. :)

I'm a graduate (gradual) student in creative writing, and I teach two classes a semester at the university (composition, literature, advanced writing, you name it--basically, whatever they want to give me). I love teaching, in many ways, and it's what I'm planning to do for the rest of my life... or until I write a best-seller. :D

But I elected not to teach this summer. I'm severely burned out, as it's been going non-stop for two years... and as much as I love my students, they drive me freakin' insane--oh, the writing horror stories I could tell you. So this summer I'll be working odd jobs where I hopefully won't have to do much of anything. I've got a line on a laundromat job, which will be sweet--lots o' reading, reading, reading.

And lotsa writing this summer, as it's thesis time. Got about sixty pages... only two hundred to go...

But please, don't call me a "Grease Monkey"

GREASE MONKEY! GREASE MONKEY, I SAY!!

 You know, Spud, I never woulda said it if you hadn't forbidden it...

I work for a catering company.

AND I book bands for my catering boss' bar. He's mafia. :yup:

I mainly said that all because of the Seinfeld episode in which Putty lands a job as a car salesman and is no longer a "grease monkey".

It's also the episode in which we see a candy line-up, and we find out what the rust-proofing really is.

I understand your reaction, but seriously, if you just have fun with it, it can be great. I just try to make sure my students don't fall asleep.

My favorite story:

We were discussing about Maus in my literature class. We're about fifteen minutes into the class, nobody is talking, not even my regulars (you know, the kids you can always count on to speak, whether they say something intelligent or not). So I give up and jump up on my desk, shouting, "JESUS, PEOPLE! THIS BOOK KICKS A*S--HOW CAN YOU NOT WANT TO TALK!" And then I jump down and start pacing around the front of the room, waving the book in the air and channeling Jesse Jackson: "The Reverend McG will preach to you the gospel of Maus--can I get an amen!"
They're all laughing by now--from shock, mostly--but no one says anything (I know they're all thinking, "The woman has lost it")--so I say it again: "Can I get an AMEN?" Then a couple of people say: "A-amen?"

This sounds crazy, and it was, no doubt, but it totally worked. We had our best discussion that day. Sometimes you just have to shock them into giving a sh*t.

But the thing is, most of my students are freshmen or sophomores, so I've still got to deal with hormones. It's worse in college, though, 'cause the majority are on their own for the first time in their lives. :p They've had a taste of freedom, and then I have to try to rein them in again.

Actually, I work in an office for the Army National Guard, and as my civillian alter-ego, I'm a college student. for the past few years i do whatever work i can do where my little whippersnapper can go along- kid-care room at my healthclub, and babysitting for some graduate student/parents.
.....before mommyhood clipped me on the chin (in a good way ofcourse), i was finishing up art education certification to teach art to middle thru highschool kids. but i have worked in a few commercial photo labs....darkroom, copyshooting, etc. and i've been a baker for many years.
once my girl is in school, i hope to teach art as planned.

on the side and deep into my soul, i'm a nature lovin' freak and artist.....and now mommy.

i still fantasize i'm a writer but i don't write. i will always fantasize that i could make a living with my art.

OHO! I told you all you would want to follow in my foosteps! Secretly, you all crave to create the magic that is the written word!

Mary Lo - dahling, too bad you're in IL, I could use your skills! All we writers ever do is use one another. Read my story, read my story! Is it bad, is it good? Be honest! No, don't be honest! Wait! Be KIND OF honest!

People keep asking me if I want to be a teacher. Well, they used to more often when I was still in school. Cuz of the good ol' English Major. And my answer is no. I have no patience for other people's children. It will take me way too much energy to find any for my own, one day.

I can't believe you kids have Creative Writing actually offered as a class in high school now. that is some bullsh|t. where was MY creative writing when *I* was growing up? Huh? HUH?! well, just appreciate it. d@mned whippersnappers.

Anyhoo, jobs I've had - um, not many. Parent was strict and over protective. That means I lived off the mercy of a $5/week allowance. But in college summer jobs I had: I was an Office Assistant for the Finance Dept of MCIWorldCom in Napa, CA. Another time I was the shipping receiver for Michael's Arts & Crafts. And during school I was the 4 years smoothie queen (smoothie bar heroine)/cashier/student manager at my dining hall. I still make a mean smoothie. We rivalled Jamba Juice and stole their customers.

Then, volunteer webwork for nonprofit type things, just trying to get writing exposure. Including this site (movie reviews) and various webzines. I earn no mula, but you know, gotta get the name out there somehow (poetry, short stories).

So yeah, the plan is to be a writer. I have hundreds of pages for various incomplete novels collecting dust on the good ol' hard drive. I finally decided my major focus is to write erotica (see my profile and link). And to revive love poetry in America. Or the world. The universe! The Age of Romance is dead and I think there's something horrible in that. I'm part of the Renaissance.

And for the day job, internet related stuff, since I live in Silicon Valley. I was sort of a tech writer/instructional writer at my last job. Now i'm in customer service/advertising which has nothing to do with that but I do get to write moving emails to incensed customers! The company i'm with is good tho, so there's potential to move up and have more fulfilling work.

all i wanna do is write, man. have my own little island in the caribbean with a hot cabana boy, my own private beach, crystal blue water, feet up, shades on, keyboard keys click clacking away ...

someday. i'll be dead eventually and the whole world won't be able to stop talking about me and remaking my life story. like shakespeare. woohoo!!

I am a full time college student. Officially, I'm majoring in psychology, but I take a lot of biology classes as well because they're fun. I have yet to decide what I actually want to do for a career. Right now I have several odd jobs. I do animal care for the biology department at my school, I do some lifeguarding, I work at a battered women's shelter, and I'm going to start doing some guiding for a whitewater rafting company. None of these jobs are especially lucrative, but I make enough money to pay $200 a month to live in a walk in closet in some friends' apartment and to pay for school and, of course, to fund my movie addiction (somewhat). =)

Hmm. Somebody help me out here... I feel like Donnie, and Donnie's out of his element.

whew. yes yes, i know, it's been a while ... chris, you still doing the email thing? though if we get up to having large files on Word or something, that may prove a problem for everybody to share. there are yahoo and MSN communities that let you upload files to folders everyone can share, and basically it's a little community that you can have daily, weekly, or web-based email digests.

when i was young and aspiring, i actually signed up for a few. but those things can really flood your inbox, and you find that you have little time to actually READ everything everyone writes ... with a small group, you feel sort of obligated. when the group is 20+, you feel less obligated, but then when 20 people write back and forth ... I agree--so, how do we get the ball rollin' on this thingy? I need motivation, being cursed with the lack of same.

I work with my family at our paint/powder shop. I am actually 4th generation, which is pretty neat b/c less than .5% of family businesses make it this far :)

We are a relatively small job shop and specialize in objects about the size of your hand... We do quite a bit of work for the appliance, automotive, and office furniture industries (can you tell we're in MI, LOL). Probably the most exciting part we've ever done are the 25th Anniversary Corvette flags, but we've gotten away from that work and moved towards more mass production over the years... Not the most exciting work in the world, but I love it. It's fulfulling to see a raw piece of ugly die-casting come into our shop and then leave as a Class A surface, ready to enter someones home :)
