44. Harry Lime (Orson Welles)
http://www.obsessedwithfilm.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/joseph-cotton-orson-welles-the-third-man.png
Harry Lime (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000080/): Nobody thinks in terms of human beings. Governments don't. Why should we? They talk about the people and the proletariat, I talk about the suckers and the mugs - it's the same thing. They have their five-year plans, so have I.
Martins (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001072/): You used to believe in God.
Harry Lime (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000080/): Oh, I still do believe in God, old man. I believe in God and Mercy and all that. But the dead are happier dead. They don't miss much here, poor devils.

Love the choices so far, especially those last five. I'm intriged to see the 40 characters you think are better.
39. Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman)
http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news/13322/_1243554726.jpg
Royal (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000432/): Baby, I'm dying. I'm sick as a dog. I'll be dead in six weeks. I'm dying.
Ethel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001378/): What are you talking about? What happened? Oh, my God. I'm sorry. I didn't know. What'd they say? What's the prognosis?
Royal (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000432/): Take it easy, Ethel. Hold on. Hold on.
Ethel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001378/): Where's the doctor? Let's get...
Royal (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000432/): Wait a second. Listen. I'm not dying. But I need some time. A month. Maybe two. I want us to...
Ethel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001378/): What's wrong with you?
Royal (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000432/): Ethel.
Ethel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001378/): Are you crazy?
Royal (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000432/): Baby. I am dying.
Ethel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001378/): Are you or aren't you?
Ethel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001378/): Dying? Yeah.
38. Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas)
http://www.mannythemovieguy.com/images/gordon_gekko.jpg

"A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti. "
35. Jessica Rabbit (Kathleen Turner)
Jessica would be the sexiest woman to ever live if she wasn't a cartoon, and some would still vote for her anyway :p
http://www.fanboy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/1sexy-gal-who-framed-roger-rabbit1.jpg
Jessica Rabbit (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000678/): You don't know how hard it is being a woman looking the way I do.
Eddie Valiant (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001364/): You don't know how hard it is being a man looking at a woman looking the way you do.
Jessica Rabbit (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000678/): I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.
Love the choice of Brendan, though I also hate it because it'll make my choice seem less original/surprising if I ever sit down and do one of these lists, cuz he'd definitely be on it.
Nice start.

Royal Tenenbaum, the Dude, and Rorschach are three of my favorite movie characters of all time.
This is a cool idea, more people should share their favorite characters.
34. The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenneger)
For Schwarzenegger, T2 is really the role of his life. The way he acts in this movie is just unbelievable. Best performance of his carreer.
http://babbleon5.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/james_cameron03.jpg
"What's wrong with your eyes?"
33. James Bond (Sean Connery)
My favorite Bond of all time, Sean Connery is a class act.
http://blog.iweb.com/en/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/sean_connery_as_bond.jpg
32. Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day)
I am not featuring many TV show characters on here, probably only two more later on down the list - so it goes to show how much I love It's Always Sunny and Charlie in particular.

"Now, what we got here is a little game of show and tell. You don't wanna show me nothing but you're telling me everything."
30. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)
I still think of the Iron Man films as a summer blockbuster, but Tony Stark as a character is brilliant to me. He is completely hilarious, witty, and resourceful and is far more interesting to me than "Iron Man".
http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Business/images/tony-stark-iron-man.jpg
Pratt (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2111652/): Is it true that you went twelve-for-twelve with the Maxim Girls last year?
Tony Stark (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000375/): That is an excellent question. Yes and no. March and I had a scheduling conflict but fortunately the Christmas cover was twins.

The addition of Charlie is genius, one of my favourite shows, the ranting and shouting between the gang is hilarious. I love how Charlie adopts a certain character in some episodes, like when he thinks he's Serpico and when he believes he's a knowledgable lawyer.
Brodinski

+ rep for all of those posts. I already mentioned in your top 100 that we have very similar taste in films; this also appears to be the case with characters. I especially like Bond (although - don't shoot me - I believe Daniel Craig to be equally good as Connery), The Dude, Quint and Nick Naylor (I still think Thank You For Smoking is by far Reitman's best film).
Very nice start to this list and I'm looking forward to your other choices.
I really enjoy Daniel Craig as James Bond, too!
Thanks everyone, I look forward to others making a characters list as well - this is fun :)

This is a great list Fiscal, you and I seem to have very similar taste when it comes to movies. I'm sure at least half your characters would make my top 50 list. When I find some time I really want to sit down and bash out a list and get it up on here.

These two performances are actually very similar, but I think his character in There Will Be Blood was better.

Not to try and spoil anything but I got my fingers crossed for Hit-girl.
9. Larry David (Himself)
God, what can I say about Curb Your Enthusiasm? This is the perfect sitcom, and Larry David is a comedic genius. Mr. David admits that not every great actor can be given an idea and asked to improvise a situation in front of the camera, but CYE and Larry gather the best of them and execute it flawlessly!

3. Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant)
You don't understand how tempted I am to put Raylan Givens at number 1. It just wouldn't be fair, Justified is only one season deep - but I have watched it over and over again already. I absolutely loved the show, I should also have the character Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), but I can get my Justified fix on the list by just adding Timothy Olyphant's excellently acted Raylan Givens here at number 3.

Fine list. Very fine job. Can't say I'd change much knowing what I "know about" characters. They "ought" to be a little bit quirky and flamboyant, I feel.
P. S. P. T. Anderson sure writes some great characters.

Your list is awesome. I'd do my own, but it would have at least half of the people on yours, so I'm not sure people would care. My favorites from your list in no particular order:
The Dude--should have been higher
Travis Bickle--my same number one
The Joker
Frank T.J. Mackey
Daniel Plainview/Bill the Butcher Cutting
Jakes Gittes
Jake LaMotta
Indiana Jones
Dirk Diggler
