Aw lonely thread. I like the last two albums a lot, but other than that they generally bore me. Though Russia On Ice is soooo good.

The Sky Moves Sideways and Signify were interesting records also, but I can't see myself returning to them

I can't see myself returning to themSounds like a meh restaurant review.

Surprising, you don't like the first album..

So I guess I am the only fan here..

It's better than a meh restaurant because I don't regret listening to them...but alas

From the reception I've gathered a lot of usual PT fans don't like The Incident because they say it's too similar to other stuff they've done. Firstly, they've never done a real concept album before (fear of a blank planet had a theme, wasn't technically a concept), and as a single album/song, depending on how you hear it, stands apart from their discography for the sole reason of sounding like they have a purpose in writing the album in the same way the newest Anathema comes across as a band who finally knows what they want to doSurprising, you don't like the first album..

So I guess I am the only fan here.. If you're referring to The Sky Moves Sideways, I did like it, and I do consider myself a fan, just not in the same way I know most people consider them to be utter gods

I am no expert either.. but I do follow & love most of their stuff.

I am glad atleast someone appreciates their work here.

I wonder how many other people here listen to more underground music. It's not often you can discuss those bands with people who know what they're talking about.

What did you think of The Incident?

genesis_pig

I liked it a lot.. my only regret was that the track "Kneel & Disconnect" which I loved the most was really short in length...

wintertriangles

That's my drummer's favorite track haha, he pretty much creamed himself when they played that part live. Since you bring that up, I was pretty surprised they didn't use the notes in that song as a motif like they did with a couple others, it would've worked well I think

genesis_pig
08-26-10, 09:07 PM
You have a band??... what do you'll play?

wintertriangles
08-26-10, 09:09 PM
I play everything but drums, can't find anyone else who can play the stuff I write unfortunately. I'm trying to find a violin and a flute so I can learn those but I'd rather pay for recording equipment at the moment.

Yopu composed anything yet, would love to listen.

I have but I'm not really happy with my demo as those songs are super old. The album I'm recording is a big step up, I'll let you know when it's done in a few months

Would love to listen to it..

Have you heard of Ship of Fools, they have only 2 albums.. I am currently listening to them.

One of my favorite progressive acts, for sure. In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear of a Blank Planet are all amazing records. I've seen them live, as well, which was mind blowing.

I like prog in general. If they have g_p's AND Sedai's blessing... I might just DL an album now and see what it's all about. I'll do Russia On Ice 'cause of wt's comment.

Porcupine Tree would be my second favorite progressive band. Riverside being number one. Seriously, check them out if you like the former. Anyways, their album Fear of a Blank Planet is simply brilliant (avatar, case in point :D). As for the The Incident, I only like a few tracks off of it. Not the greatest album but still good.

Never heard anything by RIverside..

Recommendations to try them out..

I hear the most good about the record Out Of Myself, so check that one out

By the way Genesis I heard Ship Of Fools' Out There Somewhere record, it reminded me kind of what The Pixies did on Bossanova but the spacey concept was a lot more overwhelming. The first half or so of the album was a bit underwhelming but I really enjoyed the second half, especially From Time. Is there another album you'd recommend?

genesis_pig
08-28-10, 12:42 PM
I think Ship of Fools only has 2 albums... the other one is Close Your Eyes.

Have you ever head of Quatermass?
They are another cool prog band, sadly they just have one self-titled album.

wintertriangles
08-28-10, 01:46 PM
I'll get both of those. As far as obscure prog I only can think of Dun, Comus, Blackwater Park, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. I'm surprised you namedropped two bands I didn't know, hopefully I like the other one as well

genesis_pig
08-28-10, 01:57 PM
The only one heard from that is Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Heard of them on a Compilation of Psychedelic Rock.

Quatermass was good

I should forward Mark F's recommendation from another thread, Happy The Man - Crafty Hands is another great record

I'll look into mark's recommendation. thanks

I am at work... Just titled a track by Ayreon from the album Human Equation..
It was good..

anyone heard more of Ayreon?...The Human Equation is probably the band's most dynamic album because its concept is interesting yet never becomes musically or lyrically redundant, so yes, good album, check out the whole thing. Into The Electric Castle has no lineage, nor does its concept have logic, so that ruined it for me, and 01011001 just got boring, wayyyy too many castrated male singers, which is too bad because the concept is kinda cool, but the lyrics are unfairly unimaginative in comparison

genesis_pig
09-05-10, 06:06 PM
SO you suggest I try Human Equation first?

wintertriangles
09-05-10, 06:11 PM
Absolutely sir. And if you're in the mood for some ultra bizarre stuff I just found out about the French band Magma. My my I have no idea what to make of them, let alone the name Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh. I guess the drummer actually invented a language for all the lyrics to be sung called Kobaian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koba%C3%AFan)

Don't you'll think we should have this thread renamed to Prog-Rock?

wintertriangles
09-05-10, 06:23 PM
After you hear The Human Equation come back so we can talk about it

Don't you'll think we should have this thread renamed to Prog-Rock? Nah, we can always segway back to PT if need be, plus this thread was made forever ago

EDIT: MADE BY YOU, as a matter of fact, why aren't you on topic woman

genesis_pig

I am at work now.. So can't hear more of Human Equation.

I actually thought PT was quite a popular band, so expecting more people to join in.. Surprising there were so few who joined..

Maybe I should start a thread on Justin Beaver, what say????

Ok, winter.
I think I want to tryout Opeth, what's the best album you recommend to start with.

wintertriangles
12-13-10, 04:42 PM
Watershed, it has the most clean vocals (sans Damnation which is all clean vocals) of any of their albums but is still heavy, pretty, and experimental as ever.

Now if you live in an area with a lot of snow, there's better picks for that atmosphere if that's something that helps you get into the music.

genesis_pig
12-13-10, 05:04 PM
Thanks & nope, no snow here.

A lot of J-pop, Bjork, and the guy that did the soundtrack to The Last Emperor. Nothing too groundbreaking. You?

I have been exploring the Post-Rock genre. Fascinating.
I am sure you're already familiar with most artists from this genre.

Also just started listening to Chingon (Robert Rodriguez's band).. loving them.
Highly recommended
