I saw it. I liked it a lot... I think it was tough to have so much action in it, since they had to put the entire origin of Spidey in. They did a hell of a good job though, keeping it pretty much consistent with the comic book.

The guy who played J. Jonah Jameson was awesome... Tobey was great. My only complaints about the casting is that Kirsten Dunst looks nothing like an 18 year old high school graduate... (wow, I just looked up her age on IMDB, and she's only 19! But she looks old.)

Dafoe was the bomb... his portrayal of Norman Osborn was awesome.

The only thing I think can be complained about is the lack of crazy action scenes, but without making the movie into a 3 hour monster, it isn't possible.

Two thumbs up!

I just came home from the theater.

Classic good hero, bad villan story and some flying around buildings. That's it. But it's cool. :o

Good flick. Very good. Not too many surprises unfortunately, though, so I was rarely genuinely thrilled. Just digging how cool some of the scenes were. LOTS of lulls, though...not action-packed by any means...re-watch value is a little low, but I'll probably see it a second time anyway. Good film, though, for sure.

Silver mentioned Eberts rating of very low marks, and I read somewhere that Ebert also gave X-MEN a low mark as well, so Silver's hopes of knocking my joy out of it's really really high pedestal were shot down..:)

Ebert can find one tiny flaw with something, and then will ride it to death. He said that Spider-man looked *too* fluid. So I don't know.

You like it Spudly?
Or have you still not seen it?

I thought Spider-Man was a great movie except for the differences between the comic and the movie. Things like SM shooting webs out of his wrists instead of having to make a contraption that does it for him. Also, the entire MJ story is completely screwed up. Supposedly he's liked her since the fourth grade? CRAP! He met her on a blind date! Fox has single-handedly beat the hell out of one of the best lines in spidey-dom, "Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot!" The plot of Spider-man is basically the Gwen Stacy story told with MJ taking Gwen's place and her NOT dying at the end. Aren't they gonna have a sequel or two? If they had just used Gwen instead of MJ it would have made a hell of a lot more sense and it would have impacted people much more because of her death. It would have left SO much room for a great sequel. Plus, the whole MJ blind date thing would have made a great story.

nukez2k
05-03-02, 09:38 PM
Oh yeah, and the action sequences are awesome and very, VERY, very true to the comic spidey. A great movie, despite the wannabe Gwen Stacey story that was less-than-tragic...

Welcome to Movie Forums, nukez. :)

I don't agree at all, sorry to say. It wouldn't have made "more sense" to use Gwen Stacy, because Gwen Stacy doesn't have to exist at all. The goal here was not to recreate the comic book completely, but rather, just to tell the basic story. They HAD to change some things. Personally I think the organic webshooters are a LOT more believable. I don't see a high school kid inventing something like that, even if he is a science whiz. The feel of the movie early on was perfect: stuff just happens to him...he's wary, but he gets used to it. Wouldn't have worked as well, in my opinion, if he'd been ambitious enough about it to go building something advanced like that.

The MJ thing doesn't matter to me much...I'm much more concerned with how they handle Parker's side of things...and besides, she used the word "tiger." It's close enough. It's not going to be a direct translation, obviously.

Gwen Stacy was not, from what I've read, a very interesting character. She garners interest only because she dies...which tells me the character holds very little actual weight. Besides...

Don't you think it'd feel like Uncle Ben all over again if we had another main character die? It'd feel like they were just trying to jerk more tears out of us.
Anyway, there was one part/theme I really, really liked...

I dug the fact that they kept heroism realistic...it was the LOTR: FOTR style heroism, where it's not really fun. It's not a blessing, it's a curse. Sure, he has fun with it at first, but he learns the hard way that he can't handle himself in that manner with those kinds of powers in his possession.
I'm exceedingly glad that they didn't take the "easy" out of having him end up with MJ at the film's finale. It was much more consistent, and moving, in my opinion, to have him turn her away...it represents the life he knows he has to choose. I loved it.
And, for the record, I thought Dunst was decent most of the time, but very good when crying/distraught...each time she cried, It was completely believable to me. My symbolic hat is off.

Well, I'm getting ready to post my review on the main site, when I have that done, I'll link to it on here.

I thought Kirsten Dunst's final speech, when she was confessing her love, was horrible.
The audiance, including myself, were laughing at her "Breathy Love Speech". Everything else was cool...just like a comic book. Willim Defoe was SO menacing...if not slightly sexy.;D

I don't remember what she said exactly...I just remember the gist of it: you've always been there...which I dug. I'm convinced that it's the guys who are always there...the ones who stand through it all, that do the most good for others. People notice that sort of thing.
And yes, Willem was awesomely creepy. What a snarl...borderline Grinchish, even. That raised-eyebrow/skeptical look he gave MJ midway through the film was perfect. Very, very good casting.

Saw this today. I'd probably give it 3 outta 4 stars. It was a good superhero film, but I liked X-Men better, and Batman much better. I liked the whole aspect in Spider-Man that Peter and Oswald were good friends but their alter-ego's were enemies.

I knew Willem Dafoe could pull of the creepy Green Goblin. While I was watching it I just kept thinking about Shadow of the Vampire. But its cool how he can make those faces without a whole bunch of vampire makeup and still look awesomely creepy. I just loved the whole movie, especially Tobey Maguire. I don't care what people say, he was great as Spider-man (and Peter Parker) and I couldn't think of anyone who could do it any better.....

Saw the movie last night, and I loved it. Sure, it could have been better, but overall it was a good flick. When Peter was first learning to use his webbing? Hillarious! The only thing I didn't like was the way the movie kept moving around, not giving you enough time to actually get to know the characters or their background. Other than that, I enjoyed it, and I'll keep some money stashed for the DVD's release.

I saw this last night. One thing that struck me was the similarity between Peter Parker and Rand al'Thor from The Wheel of Time.

I am not familiar with the comics but I assume they were true to the story and situation of spider-man, and how he shuns attachment for fear that the people he loved could be used to hurt him.

This is the same with Rand in those books, he alienates himself from the women he loves and his hometown so that they won't be used as bait for him.

What I'm curious about is if Robert Jordan stole this theme from Spider-man, as much as I like his books Robert Jordan is a huge "borrower" and it wouldn't suprise me.

Spider-Man just ROCKS. Seriously. Give it the Best Picture Oscar. I'm not kidding. I have to see this again. Sam Raimi is finally back to making truly great movies. Let's all hope for Evil Dead 4 next! One complaint: They didn't use the hilarious Ramones version of the old Spider-Man song anywhere in the film. But it DID have Bruce Campbell, Macho Man Randy Savage, Lucy Lawless, "the Classic" (Sam Raimi's car, which has appeared in every one of his films), and Ted Raimi in cameos, so that more than makes up for that one oversight. Bring on Spider-Man 2!!!!

I used to like Macy Gray...a lot, even...at first. I dug her unique voice. Now, it's getting kinda old...and the fact that she seems to be a very unlikeable person, I admit, has a negative effect. I also saw/heard that Lawless had a short part/cameo/whatever, but despite two viewings I haven't actually noticed her in the film.

I haven't seen it yet, but obviously the Oscar is out. If they can't give it to FOTR, they certainly won't give it to a comic book movie anytime soon. I'll try to catch this in the next few days; I think I'll like it, not love it.

(Spoliers) I'm only going to warn you once

Making a Superhero movie not BAD ! not! OK but great ! is an achievement.

One part of me says, I love how Raimi just gets right into it , another part of me wishes he had taken more time to develop such an intresting character in Peter Parker. My best example would be what Richard Donner did with Superman.

The Begining scene goes well with the film as it is but had it played for another 20 mins and started the same way it could have been ugly if that 20 mins had been added anywhere else other than the begining. Still I think the begining was over-paced and a bit sloppy. For the length of the film it's understandable and he really needed a means of gettting right into the thick of things. I just think that had it been 20 plus minutes it could had been better than it already is had it been added to the begining.

I think the innocent factor of characters while working many times and on different levels, becomes redundant & repeatitive. The Dialogue seems like it was attentionaly rip straight from the comic book itself. It's Funny and work most of the time too. The Editing was a bit flashy but all in all it needed to be. I don't feel as if that was a problem, more of a device to hide some of the rough edges instead of tryin to smooth them out.

The last scene was a mixture if greatness applied with down right sillyness. It's Raimi relience of the script to take him were he wants to go that truthfully hurts him. The impact of that scene would have been much better to cut sort on some of MJ's dialogue.

You also have to look at it, consider it, and think of it, as the fact that it could have been so badly mad and the fact that Raimi was able to do a good job of it makes it even better.

Raimi is a very visual director, as said before his leaning of the script tended to be at points heaven, too much and using it to get himself out of situations that should have been more visual than talky.

Strenghts
- The Seconds yes the seconds Spider-Man should open up more and be very revenage filled.
- Marking a come back for Sam Raimi.
-Every action scene suited the movie and suited a purpose.

Just got back from this one.

At first I thought the dialogue sucked, as well as the delivery. I was thinking Tobey Maguire was some massively untalented actor. Then I realized, "Hey...it's a comic book movie. It's comic book dialogue."

After that, I had a lot of fun :)

I mean......great action. Fun, simple story. Evil, hatable villan. Cool, likable hero. Tense moments. A really classy ending. I walked out of the theater feeling satisfied, sated, and fulfilled. My 6 bucks had been well-spent.

Can't ask for much more than that, these days.

All Batman's villans are insane. That makes them similar. But Spidey's - Vulture, - Dr Octopus, -The Sandman, -The Enforcers, The Rino, -The Lizard They're all cool and different!

That would be perfect for lots of sequels. For instance, we all know the formula for a successful sequel is to have something similar from the last movie but also make the movie different enough that it can stand on it's own. Vulture, flys like the Goblin but cool cuz he has wings. Doc Oc, mad scientist like Osborne but he has 8 arms. Lizard, like the baby Godzillas but can talk and he's a scientist too. The Rino would be too much like the Hulk, that one would be good for working in more story. Sandman would have cgi effects similar to T2, that would be cool. The Enforcers would be good but I'd bet no one would make it with all these other characters to choose from.

Who's going to be in Spiderman2 anyway?

I wonder if they are going to bring back the Green Goblin? Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin? Maybe they will start doing what the Batman movies did and make each movie have two villians.
