I guess so... Last outing Garza gave up many hits and registered a 12 ERA - last night, no hits and 0.00 ERA. I guess he isn't fired...

I have my eye on Mr. Scott Baker, though. If he keeps blowing up my WHIP and ERA, he's out!

EDIT - ANOTHER INJURY

I go through outfielders at an alarming rate....

Huston Street has been "hit in the right pelvic area by a line drive in batting practice and taken off the field in an ambulance."

But wait, there's more (emphasis added): "Rockies trainer Keith Dugger said that Street passed out two or three times and had ringing in his ears after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Ian Stewart. Street also complained of pain down his right leg and stomach discomfort."

Stewart's on my team, too. So, basically, my 2nd basemen knocked out my best closer in batting practice.

That's uh, not good and stuff.

My best starting pitchers are getting hammered pretty good right now, if that helps any.

Tongo's ERA - 1.83

Sedai's ERA - 1.83

Don't see that very often!

Tongo's ERA - 1.83

Sedai's ERA - 1.83

Don't see that very often!

Yeah we were neck n neck all week but I just pulled ahead 6-4, and Matt Kemp hasnt played yet. It was a great matchup Seds, and alot of the games were close this week overall.

Yoda

Alright. Just went 9-0 which means I'm just...what?! Still 11 games behind PW? That can't be right. Geez. I've won the last 5 series', going 36-11 and jumping into one of the two Bye week slots, and I'm still down 11 games.

Re: Chris Perez. Nice snag of a Chris, from a Chris, to another Chris. I had a lot of very, very tough choices to make leading up to the trade deadline, and it looked like Wood wasn't going to be moved, so I dropped him. Naturally, Wood gets traded out of nowhere shortly thereafter. D'oh. I did manage to grab Storen and Hanrahan, however, so I'm not too worried.

August is going to be very interesting, as I should be getting Pedroia back, and Ellsbury should start up in a week or two, as well. Be afraid, MoFos. Be very afraid. The Isotopes are going radioactive for the stretch run again.

I only went for the guy because, umm, it appears that the Mariners may very well, NOT win another game this season much less be able to roll the DA out there for a save opportunity.

Just trying to stay proactive (if that word even applies here) because the fact that your team has been on fire of late has not escaped the 'Ragers management.

Yoda

This is why I love Tim Lincecum:

- O. Infante singled
- J. Heyward walked, O. Infante to second
- C. Jones struck out swinging
- B. McCann struck out swinging
- E. Hinske struck out swinging
Gets himself into trouble, and then just blows through three straight guys. The really great pitchers -- the ones with a ton of strikeouts, mainly -- can really get themselves out of trouble with the ability to miss bats.

Powdered Water
08-07-10, 10:43 AM
This is why I love having 4 or 5 closers. The new guy (Chris Perez) blew his save last night and then in the bottom half of the ninth he gets bailed out with a tater to end the game.

So, I get a win instead of a save. I love that. Its happened at least 3 or 4 times this year too. The best part is, as long as the closer doesn't give up more than a few runs, ERA for the week doesn't balloon up to bad either.

So, uh, yay. And stuff.

Yoda
08-11-10, 01:33 PM
Well, TONGO got hosed; Santana got his leg broken horrendously, and Martin went on the DL about the same time. Ouch. No way to see it coming, though.

Very disappointed in my last week; I won, but not by much, and it had all the makings of a blowout. Lost a few categories I really could have won.

Duking it out with Seds at the moment; I'd be running away with some of the pitching categories, 'cept Lincecum got shelled. Not a banner year for that guy, but all will be forgiven if he comes through in the playoffs...

Starting to heat up; 2 or 3 of us are fighting for the other bye (little hope of catching PW at #1, unless I absolutely kill him in our head to head soon), and we've got 3 or 4 fighting for that last playoff spot. Drama!

Sedai
08-11-10, 02:15 PM
Le Sigh - I blew it.

It seems like whenever I play Chris, I forgot to check my line-up. Multiple missed starts this week already, and I just blew it AGAIN today. Just no way I can win pitching without my aces going this week, and one is sitting today.

Add to that the fact that Texiera's wife just had a kid and he didn't even fly out for the road trip, and I am only collecting points for half my staff this week, as I missed multiple starts on batters this week. The most common mistake I made this season is putting a sub in on Monday/Thursday, and then I fail to replace the starter until days later. Oops!

I need to pay A LOT more attention to my team next season. I absolutely needed Garza to play this week to have a chance at Ks...

I was ONE minute late on Garza, btw....

Yoda
08-11-10, 02:22 PM
Gah, that sucks man. Sorry. Believe me, I'm not happy about it; I wanna win with everyone going if at all possible.

'Course, now that you've lamented this, odds are 50-50 Garza gets rocked. :D As always, I'm rooting for it not to make a difference in the final results of the week.

Yoda
08-11-10, 04:42 PM
Whaddya know; Garza has a bad (but not terrible) game; no win and 3 earned runs in 5 and 2/3 innings with a 1.74 WHIP. 4 Ks, but those probably aren't worth the hit to ERA and WHIP.

Should've waited and then pretended to meant to bench him. That's what I would've done.

Had a bad night on Tuesday. The damn Rockies cant score 1 run with Jimenez on the mound? Against the Mets?! And then Lincecum totally blows it versus the the Cubs? The Cubs?! Bankroll took a hit. The Horror... The Horror.

Yoda
08-13-10, 09:15 PM
Josh Johnson struggling! Sure as heck didn't expect that, seeing as how he'd given up 2 runs or less in 14 of his previous 16 starts. Gives me a chance to swing 2-3 categories I might not have been able to otherwise.

Seds' hitters have been sick, however. I'm within a reasonable range in a few of the offensive categories, but I'll be lucky to flip even one of them, I think.

Sedai
08-16-10, 10:14 AM
It was a close one! Johnson is having trouble lately - not sure what is up with that. Luckily Jimenez was his usual self. ;)

Yoda
08-16-10, 11:49 AM
Yeah, you pulled it out. Obviously I don't care too much about technically winning or losing the series, so much as losing a category that could have gone the other way. I think on three separate occasions my hitters start slamming the ball, putting up 2-3 homers in a day, and then I'd wake up and see that you had matched it later in the evening. There were a couple of pitching categories we were both trying really hard not to win, too.

The pitching was insane; you had a huge lead on me until the Johnson game, but Lincecum really blew it for me. D'oh. I'm obviously stuck with him, and he's still sporadically brilliant, but for him it's a down year. But of course, if he performs in the playoffs, all will be forgiven.

We're all just playing for the second bye for now, though. Unless I win, like 8-10 games against PW this week, in which case there'll be an outside shot at #1. But I doubt it. It's probably just gonna be me and the Dirt Stars for the bye.

After the top three it's crazy. Five teams within 2.5 games of each other for three playoff spots, including three teams all deadlocked at .521. Very exciting stuff.

Sedai
08-16-10, 12:04 PM
It's SO close in the mid-field right now. I have a chance! :D

Yoda
08-16-10, 09:21 PM
Wow. Francisco Rodriguez was already in hot water for attacking his father, and now it turns out he hurt himself in the process and is out for the year.

I feel pretty bad for TONGO; I traded him three guys, and now two of them (Santana and Rodriguez) are out for the year, both on freak injuries, and his alternative at C (Russell Martin) is on the DL, too. Them's some tough breaks, TONGO.

TONGO
08-16-10, 11:09 PM
Whats funny is ive been good and havent traded all season till then, and look at what happens! Aw well hopefully there will be some karmaic payback for the football season. In fact the karma dam seems to be overflowing for PWs Roid Ragers this season. He just whooped me very well

Yoda
08-17-10, 12:29 PM
Yeah, that's incredibly bad luck, TONGO. Sorry man.

Meanwhile, PW: you and I might actually have a series on our hands. :D Marcum threw a gem, and Scherzer did, too, though I had Scherzer on the bench. He's been awesome since he was called up again, but against the Yankees' best-offense-in-baseball, I decided to play it safe. Obviously, a mistake, but oh well. I'm trotting Verlander out there today, most likely, and odds are he'll be the one shelled now.

Keep your head up, Water man. We're one day in and the first punch has been thrown.

Sedai
08-17-10, 12:34 PM
Wow, I have 4 starters going today!

Sedai
08-18-10, 10:33 AM
^^^^^ Three of the four starters dominated, posting 0.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across the board. Strikeouts weren't so great with a couple of guys, but Garza delivered 10 Ks. If my hitters stay at least somewhat consistent this week, I should have a good week!

Powdered Water
08-18-10, 09:01 PM
I had four starters too. Two of them are still on the bench! um... boooo!

Stupid. Maybe you'll get that 10-0 victory you' were looking for Chris. My offense appears to be taking the week off as well..

Yoda
08-18-10, 09:08 PM
I saw. Wainwright I'm sure you'd have wanted to start (though he only did so-so). I wasn't sure if you'd even have wanted to play Gonzalez, though, who actually pitched well, but was probably a pretty mediocre choice for the day. Guess we'll see if it makes any difference.

Anyway, you've actually been adding a game here or there over the last couple of weeks, so I could win 8-10 games and still have a hard time getting the #1 seed. You've got quite a bit of margin up there.

Powdered Water
08-18-10, 09:15 PM
Yeah, I've been neck deep in this web site I just got into a few days ago and have been a little side tracked. Apparently A-Rod is hurt a bit and Cruz just went on the DL again, which I actually knew about but still... bummer dude.

I like my margin just where it is, so at this point I'll be happy with a 5-5 or 4-6 split if you please.

Tell your team to lay off and save their strength for post season. You don't want to use up all your runs in one week, yeah?

mark f
08-18-10, 10:33 PM
Hardy Har Har!. Now I realize that the Hemerroids II are so far superior to anyone else here (Yoda doesn't want to admit), but I think that's becase Chris knows how to draft and play for 12-team leagues rather than 10-team ones.

I hope I get to do what I did last year. I was on a roll at the end of the year, and I barely made it into the playoffs, and then I won the first two playoff brackets and lost to the other Chris in the two-week finals..

I mean, c'mon now! Who woulda thought that two different Chrises could be such S.O.B.s?

Yowza!

That's Mr. SOB, to you pal.

Yoda
08-19-10, 12:11 AM
Hey, I'll admit it; PW's been killing us. I'm honestly surprised I'm within a stone's throw. I think it's closer now than it was earlier in the year, and a few of us have improved enough to have a shot at him, but he's absolutely destroyed all of us in the first half and hasn't let up much in the second. He's probably got the #1 seed, and he deserves it.

And if he's Mr. SOB, I get to be Senor SOB.

All that said: Hemerroids, heh. Nice burn. No pun intended.

Powdered Water
08-21-10, 01:51 AM
Jon Lester. 2 innings pitched, 40.50 ERA. Carlos Marmol 1 inning pitched, 27.00 ERA. Ouch.

Yoda
08-21-10, 04:39 PM
Oh, it gets better: Huston Street, 18.00 ERA. Man, what a day. How do you get a 40.00 ERA? They left him in long enough to give up 9 earned runs? Good grief. This was looking like a big win, but they just destroyed me. I'll have to scrape for a tie now.

Ichiro just decided he's actually a power hitter, slamming two homers today, giving you the lead there. I wonder when the last time he did that was.

And did I mention Ellsbury went right back on the DL...and then Pedroia did, too? This is TONGO-level luck.

Man oh man. Big missed opportunity. I'll have to call a closed door meeting after tomorrow's games.

Powdered Water
08-21-10, 09:45 PM
Half of my team may be on the DL by the end of the weekend as well. Sure hope these guys can make it back by the end of the year.

Yoda
08-21-10, 10:01 PM
At which point you'll only be winning at a .590 clip, I'm sure.

Another bad (though not horrible) outing for Lincecum. Man, that's such a blow. Guy can't get it together; his season's been quite mediocre among pitchers overall, and downright terrible given what was expected of him. Seemed like a really safe pick, and this is the worst possible time of year for him to fall apart. That alone could kill me in the playoffs.

Pity, I was feeling really awesome about my pitching for a week or two there.

Yoda
08-22-10, 07:52 PM
Well, my pitchers were awesome today, but it won't be enough. Neither Hudson or Marcum got any run support, so I only got one Win, which it looks like will be the difference between taking that category, and merely tying it.

Did the math, and Lester's mind-blowingly bad start was the difference between my 4.24 ERA and -- get this -- a 3.06 ERA. Would've swung WHIP, too, so if he hadn't played I'd have gone something like 7-2, instead of 5-4 (which may or may not hold; we'll see). Even with all my relievers getting knocked around, I would've made up all that ground if not for Lester. Ow. That hurts.

Anyway, even if I eek out a win, the Dirt Stars are killing, so they're going to take the #2 seed. I play mack's struggling Zeppelins next, which may help (though anything can happen in a given week). After that...it's me and the Dirt Stars in the final week! Odds are excellent that the final bye week will be up for grabs in that. Gotta love those randomly generated schedules...

Blue Lou
08-22-10, 10:03 PM
Tough break for Chip and the Braves. But it looks like they are bringing in the vets for the field general's last run. Still can't believe Cards traded Ludwick. They needed his bat. Dumb sons a bitches.

Nicely done, Seds. You've got your work cut out for you, but you're probably playing PW at the right time, though that may not be saying much.

Meanwhile, 3 teams are within 2 games of each other for the final spot, including my friend Adam, who was really struggling earlier in the year.

Not that you and Mark are completely safe, of course, but with only two weeks left you probably just need to put up so-so numbers to hang on.

Yoda
08-30-10, 09:43 AM
Well, here we are: last week of the regular season. Here's where we stand:

Playoff Clinchers
PW, myself, and the Dirt Stars have clinched the first three playoff spots.

Bye Weeks
We're both mathematically unable to take the #1 seed, so the Dirt Stars and I are fighting it out for #2...and we're playing each other! He got decked last week, though, so I'm going into it with a 3.5 game lead. So, basically, as long as I go at least 4-6, rather than 3-7 or worse (or something similar depending on the number of ties), I'll have the #2 seed and, with it, the other Bye week.

On the Bubble

Five teams are fighting for the final three playoff spots:

Dodgers (mark f)
Tongos Naturals (TONGO)
Cubs (mikeython1)
The Clueless Clowns (Sedai)
I Like Turtles! (my friend Adam)
Mark's almost definitely safe, as he's 5.5 games ahead of the 6th place team; he'd have to get really creamed, and have 3 of the other 4 teams have huge weeks to miss the playoffs. And since 2 of them are playing each other, that's a long shot. TONGO's team is a few games ahead of the other 3, so he's in pretty good shape, too, though by no means safe.

The big battle is between the Cubs, Clowns, and Turtles, who figure to fight for a single playoff spot, with only 1 game separating the 3 of them. Sedai's Clowns play the Dodgers, the Turtles play TONGO, and the Cubs have it easiest, playing the last-place Meat. Then again, with the Turtles playing one of the teams ahead of them, if they happen to open up a can of whoop-ass, that could drag TONGO down, open up another playoff spot, and really make things interesting.

Good luck guys!

Oh, woe is me...

Terrible week last week! It just seemed like most of my dudes took time off or were "rested" on planned days off. Bummer!

Yoda
09-01-10, 11:50 PM
Max Scherzer is a MAN! He's FORTY!

He's actually 26, but you get the idea.

Dude just threw 9 innings of 1-run ball and needed just 106 pitches to do so. Game still tied 1-1. Wonder if they'll trot him out there again, Jack Morris style? Probably not.

What a season this guy's having. Very talented, so I snagged him in the very last round of the draft. He struggled and got sent down, so I dropped him. He took, like, two weeks in the minors to straight himself out, struck out a whopping 14 batters in his return, I snatched him back up, and he's been awesome ever since. I think his ERA since coming back up is about 2.20, covering 17 starts, striking out something like 116 batters in 110 innings. If you count tongiht, he's given up 1 ER or less in 11 of his last 14 starts.

"Yes, it'd be fair to say I like [Max Scherzer] from the start." The start of the second time, I mean.

TONGO
09-02-10, 07:34 PM

Wow, Adam's killing TONGO. Looks like he might not only get into the playoffs, but grab 5th!

Meanwhile, the Cubs are holding their own and look like they'll hang onto 6th.

Seds and TONGO are fighting for dear life, just about a game or two out of the last spot. Seds needs to swing a few categories tonight to get in.

TONGO
09-06-10, 10:43 AM

Ouch, man; a half-game! So friggin' close.

Gotta give props to my friend Adam for hanging around all year and then making a move late. He had a big 10-0 like 6 weeks ago, then kept splitting series, then hit it big last week and this one, and it was enough.

Interesting that 4 of last year's 6 playoff teams made it again this year. Also interesting: I had a .584 winning percentage last year, which was good enough for first, and even thought I upped it to .598 this year, Istill finished 14 games back of PW's .661 percentage. Yowza. I've got a feeling we could play this league for a decade and no one would hit that mark again.

Yeah this has been the year of the PW in baseball fantasy. Total dominance from beginning to end. If Chris/PW doesnt win it this year he'll have been so robbed.
