Hello everyone. First post!

I've been an avid movie watcher for the past three years. When I say avid, I mean renting anywhere from one to five movies per week. I have enjoyed many and disliked many more. I don't think I'm "picky", but I have learned that I really demand some sort of originality. Do something different!

I like to "rate" movies out of 5. I'm very selective as to what my 5s are. To date, only eleven movies have that distinction for me! There are a few I need to rewatch, though. I am learning that I like war movies, movies with narration, and good ole gangster movies. For me, a film is a specific art form that can do something that other forms can't: multi-task. If I can see one thing, read something else, and hear another thing, we have surpassed the realm of the novel. Because of this personal requirement, simply having a nice story is not enough to be a great movie. For instance, 12 Angry Men, a great play, doesn't function well as a movie. Virtually one set, no great '50s music scores, etc. I know I'm in the minority in not enjoying this movie.

Also, I absolutely HATED A Clockwork Orange. Let the enraged comments begin! Good to be here, all.

daniel3417's 5-stars:
-The Godfather
-Amadeus
-Platoon
-Dances With Wolves
-Gran Torino
-Goodfellas
-Forrest Gump
-Braveheart
-Stranger Than Ficton, random I know
-American Beauty
-The Sixth Sense

Welcome! I didn't like Clockwork Orange either, although I don't think I'd give any of those in your list 5 stars except maybe The Godfather and American Beauty. But differences of opinion are what create good discussions, hope to see you join in with some :)

I guess renting 1 to 5 movies a week is weird to most people. But not here. You're in the right place. :)

Welcome to Movie Forums. And for the record, while I didn't hate it, I didn't particularly like A Clockwork Orange, either.

No retort on 12 Angry Men, Yods? ;)

Yeah, Some people on this board will watch 5 films per day, so am thinking neither weird nor avid applies here. ;)

Regardless - welcome! :)

Most surprising on this thread is the lack of love for A Clockwork Orange.

I suppose I can see why people would find the presentation distasteful, but the underlying message and the way that it's approached, to me, is exemplary.

Ah well, to each his own. There's no accounting for taste. One man's junkyard is another man's treasure. Just felt like ending my post with axioms/adages/aphorisms.

Wow I didn't expect so many negative comments toward A Clockwork Orange either!

Alex one of my favourite characters in cinema!

As long as American Beauty is on your list, your okay with me :bashful:
Check out Six Feet Under if you haven't already. It was a tele show on HBO by Alan Ball (same guy who did almost everything for American Beauty).

It'd be weird for me. I haven't rented a film in about 15 years.

Surprising... But welcome. :p :)

Anyway, welcome daniel. :)

Welcome Daniel, Gran Torino and Forrest Gump are some of my favs as well. On the other hand, didn't think much of Platoon or American Beauty.

Stranger than Fiction is an interesting film that I would actually put in my top 100. I just think it has great repeatability quality and a nice ensemble of a cast.
