I first found out who he was through the forums, I had fallen in love with a Beetles song he had covered that was played at the end of American Beauty. After looking him up and checking out some of his own music, I can't stop listening to this song called "Between Bars".

So I was wondering, do you guys
1. Have you guys heard of him before?
2. What do you think of his music?
3. What's your interpretation of "Between Bars"?
Yep, he's not bad. "Pictures of Me" is probably my favorite. I think he's a bit idolized given his premature death (as is often the case), but I like his stuff.

Yeah, I read about some suicide/homicide thing. Went through a mini bio, sounds like the "art type".
Thanks for the recommendation :bashful:

Elliott Smith is my favourite artist and was first introduced to him through The Royal Tenenbaums in which his song Needle in the Hay is played during Luke Wilson's botched suicide attempt.

Instantly downloaded the song and was in love with it. I looked for more from him and now have every song he's recorded and the recent book that came out Elliott Smith, Autumn de Wilde.
He was given an Oscar nomination for his song Miss Misery that was featured in the film Good Will Hunting, he lost to Celin Dion and the juggernaut Titanic. Good Will Hunting also showcases other songs from him, which is why I like the movie so much (aside from it being good too :p )

He never really liked the spotlight and you could tell he was uncomfortable performing at the Oscars. Yet he still did a marvelous job.
As for my favourite songs from him? I have many:
Needle in the Hay
Fond Farewell
Between the Bars
Baby Britain
Twilight
Angeles
All Cleaned Out
King's Crossing
See You Later (originally written with his band)
His song Angel in the Snow was recently included in the film Up In The Air
I find that his songs are perfect to listen to while in bed about to go to sleep,. Some have helped me get through events in my life, as music is always an outlet for things.
He covered a lot of Beatles songs, they were a huge inspiration for him and his music. I really like his cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy
I respect the guy and his talents he played the guitar, piano, clarinet, bass guitar, drums, and harmonica. I love his voice and how soft it is, you can hear his emotion through so many words and the power in his lyrics strikes cords with me. A lot of it is dark, but a lot of it is also cheerful. He never considered himself a 'sad-sack'
One of the things I want to do in my lifetime is write on his memorial wall, but I don't know if that will ever happen, considering how stupid people are these days with vandalism.

Near the end of his tragic life and career the drug addiction would affect his performances, which would result in him forgetting some words to his songs and some cords.
I love the guy so much that I took one of his albums for my production company. "From A Basement Productions"
Rest in Peace Elliott Smith

I haven't been able to listen to most of his stuff, just the album Between Bars is one (which is on the top of my list, got me through a visit to a mental hospital for depression). He's becoming one of my favorite artist of all time no doubt.

Did you mean the song Between the Bars? It appears on the album Either/Or, his third album. I'd like to hear your thoughts on his other stuff, if you ever get the chance to listen to it.

I meant the song (that's what I get for not proof reading my posts all the time) :bashful:
From the ones on your list, these are the ones that stuck out the most as far as lyrics:
King's Crossing
All Cleaned Out
Twilight
Fond Farewell
I have yet to hear one I've disliked sound wise. One of the ones I found on my own that I really like (sound wise) is Say Yes.
If you have any other band suggestions, I'm all ears:bashful:
