I haven't seen too many from this year, but of the films I've seen these could be on a top ten list:

District 9
Up
Moon
The Hurt Locker

If someone were to ask me to define the word “overrated”, I would list those two titles, along with Inglourious Basterds and Star Trek. I thought 2009 was a bad year for everyone going crazy over mediocre movies.

Moon
The Hurt Locker

Moon is really good. Still need to see The Hurt Locker.

Hey lets not forget Zombieland? Hilarious situations mixed with zombies, action, and gore? what more? Might have lacked in plot depth but made up for it every scene...

Can I get in on this strongly disagreeing action? ;) I actually won't quibble with District 9. I liked it very much, but I can kinda-sorta see why someone might merely find it good. Really wouldn't try to talk anyone out of that. But I'll defend Inglourious Basterds, Up and Star Trek to the very end. The first two, moreso.

Inglourious Basterds and Up were amazing in their own respects. I agree that District 9 was good but not spectacular. If you want spectacular, see The Hurt Locker and stay away from Funny People

And "funny people" is and mediocre overrated film ? It`s not only mediocre, it`s bad mediocre. Oh yeah, from all great European film`s this year that make almost all of your top 10 from this year overrated, you did not mention even one of them. Sorry if I sounded a little arrogant, but it just does not get into my head.

The only problem with a list like this (as you imply in its title) is that this is the time when Hollywood releases its 'best' films, that is, those they think are Oscar worthy/possible. Although that's not reason enough to delay posting this list (IMO) I will ask whether there's any more films for release this year that you think could make this top 10?

Honestly, you sound more incoherent than arrogant. I'm not entirely sure what you're asking/telling me. And which European films are you referring to? As for Funny People being "bad", I'm sure you could make an argument for that. In fact, I acknowledge that it is a very flawed film. However, on a personal basis I enjoy it very much and I think it has a lot of positive components to it. For example, I think all the characters and relationships are given the right amount of screen time. I think it combines comedy and drama successfully, and analyzes the damage that fame does to people. It's also a great performance by Sandler.

I think there are plenty, and that's a very good point.

Unseen Movies That Could Make This List
Bright Star
The Hurt Locker
Antichrist
A Single Man
I Killed My Mother
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
The Road
Broken Embraces
The Informant!
Whatever Works
Up in the Air
The Last Station
Me & Orson Welles
Avatar
Brooklyn's Finest
It's Complicated
Invictus
Nine
The Lovely Bones
The White Ribbon
In the Loop

Of course, I probably won't see all of those, but I think all of them would potentially have a spot on this list. And there are probably even more that I'm forgetting about.

That's quite a list MM. Actually, it's a lot more than I'd considered (as it contains lots of films that've already come out) but I was thinking of The Road, The Lovely Bones, Me And Orson Welles, Nine and Avatar.

I'll be interested to see how many (if any) of them make it and what they'll displace. I assumed that they were in order (given the numbering and Tetro being at the top) but I know from experience that when you decide that something has to be in a top 10, it's not always the #10 choice that makes way.

I wouldn't put District 9 on the top 10 list, decent but not great. Also agree with the thumbs down on Funny People. I would agree with the prior poster who listed An Education and 500 Days of Summer. Also liked Bright Star and would add Red Cliffs, the Chinese war movie from John Wu.

Well, some of them I just haven't gotten around to yet, and others we haven't gotten where I live. I'm going to a preview screening for Nine in a couple weeks.

I'm sure some of them will make the list. It's just a question of which ones. My ordering is pretty exact right now, I think, but you're right in saying that the bottom one isn't always the first to go. I do think Funny People will be the next one to get the boot, though.

I know Tetro is going to stay number 1, because films like that only come out very rarely.

Off the top my head would have:

Black Dynamite
In the Loop
Moon
The Hurt Locker
Crank 2
Let the Right One In
Watchmen
Gomorrah
Zombieland
Inglorious Basterds

Last one be pretty replaceable once seen more releases, i'd say

Maybe it`s a problem with me, because I distinguish personal favorites and objective best films, and when I see best films of 2009, I expect to see an objective list, and not personal favorites, but it`s your oppinion and I can`t change it. I was referring to your comment that "Up!" and "Inglorious basterds" as mediocre. I agree about "Tetro" and "A serious man", not that much about "Shrink"

@My neighbor from Croatia
Well for starters, von Triers "Antichrist", Cannes 2009 winner "The White ribbon", which I really enjoyed, "Mammoth", "The Milk of Sorrow" Serbian "St. George slays the Dragon", "Honeymoons" and "Life and death of a porno gang" (but I know except me, nobody else saw them).

12-05-09, 03:50 PM
Well, considering I'm familiar with all the titles you listed, you're not the only person in the world who saw them. I'd be more than willing to watch any of them, but they're all limited releases that haven't been made available to me where I live.

Shrink is a movie that I'm assuming I'll be alone in admiring, for the most part. Glad you like Tetro though.

12-05-09, 03:59 PM
Unfortunately they won`t, maybe "St. George slays the dragon" because it`s considered for an oscar, but the rest, certanly won`t. "Shrink" I liked, because of Spacey mostly, and "Tetro" is certanly worth considering for the best film of 2009 on any list.

I was just suprised to see the list, I liked your reviews so I was hoping for a bit better list, but as the old Romans said, "de gustibus non disputandum est".

nothing. i just said my opinion. i just think it's a good movie :-??

I nominated Depp in my 2009 "awards" (something I do for fun). But the movie itself didn't do a whole lot for me. Oddly enough, I ended up seeing it twice on opening day... long, uninteresting story. It's a good film, but not a great film.

Unfortunately they won`t, maybe "St. George slays the dragon" because it`s considered for an oscar, but the rest, certanly won`t. "Shrink" I liked, because of Spacey mostly, and "Tetro" is certanly worth considering for the best film of 2009 on any list.

By "considered", do you mean it's getting Oscar buzz? Spacey is incredible in Shrink. In my opinion, it's some of the best acting he's ever done. And I agree, obviously, that Tetro is great. I think it's a genuine masterpiece.

I was just suprised to see the list, I liked your reviews so I was hoping for a bit better list, but as the old Romans said, "de gustibus non disputandum est".

I don't see anything wrong with my list... Oscar season is still just starting up.

12-06-09, 12:57 AM
Well it`s serbian nominee for an oscar, but will it get a nomination, I don`t know, if "Catch" didn`t get it, I don`t think it will, but still it`s a great movie, Kovacevic wrote the play years ago, and finally Dragojevic decided to make a film of it, it`s the most expensive Serbian film ever made so we all have high hopes for it. Spacey now rarely does any film, he`s mostly in the theater as I`ve heard, thats a pity for us who can`t see the master at his best.

Gomorra was relesed in Italy, France and all across Europe in 2008, was the US premiere in 2009 ?

Harry Lime
12-06-09, 03:18 AM
Gomorrah was released in L.A. at the end of December so I think that makes it technically a 2008 film. I've been thinking of it that way anyway, it sits at the top of my top ten from 2008 list.

Pretty sure Rachel Getting Married was from 2008 as well. Sorry to pick away at your list there Meat, was it really that good to include it in your top ten? I need to be seeing that movie.

michaelcorleone
12-06-09, 03:28 AM
Rachel Getting Married is irrefutably a 2008 release. I saw it in 2008 at a main local cinema, it was nominated for countless 2008 awards... there's no way it can be considered a 2009 release.

It's pretty good. About as good as District 9. Maybe a bit better.

I have a lot more to see of course (haven't seen most of the good non-American movies yet because they aren't out on DVD), but I imagine it may be hard to dislodge the fantastic Hurt Locker and Up from the top 2 places. Ponyo and In The Loop would, I think, probably be in the top ten. Other good stuff includes My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, One Week, Sin Nombre and Moon, though they are a fair bit behind.

I knew I had forgotten some:

I loved Star Trek. Just a whole lot of fun.

3 In The Loop
4 The Princess and the Frog
5 Ponyo
6 Mary and Max
7 Up in the Air

Moon, Rachel Getting Married

these are all right but wouldn't be-

Precious, 500 Days of Summer, District 9, Funny People, Watchmen, Gomorra, Let The Right One In, Star Trek, Tyson, The Hangover, Coraline

these really wouldn't be-

The rest I haven't seen yet.

Blind Side has to be in some people's top ten lists, i thought not just the performance from Sandra Bullock was immense but the whole film was great. To add to that it was based on a true story. Really enjoyable and gripping film.

As for the Hurt Locker, i don't see what all the fuss is about. I thought it was a decent film but nothing going beyond the term ''Decent''. I know we can argue the fact that it's realistic and it's what happens in Iraq for American soldiers but to go beyond saying it's the best film the year, the film itself has to match the label it's getting and for me, this film just didn't have that effect. Sorry, decent movie but vastly overated.

Avatar, best film of the year for me. I was the one of the majority that went to see it at the cinema and hell was it a enjoyable movie. The effects were tremendous, but for me i also thought the film was immense. The storyline was great, the cast played great roles and the whole film was a classic of the modern era. One of the best movies of this decade, not just because of the effects and animated characters, but because of the whole film collectively.

Films like Inglorious Basterds, Up, District 9, i have yet to watch but will be giving them a watch in the next week.

i think fast and furious should also be included in this list
I hope you're joking.

Looking back at 2009 I find it hard to REALLY like 10 movies. There are some on this list I don't but I felt I had to put something down at least:
(in no order)
Zombieland
Hurt Locker
Hangover
Avatar
Star Trek
Up In the Air
Terminator Salvation
Inglourious Basterds

8 worth watching. To remember?....i don't know about that. I just got done watching a Serious Man. Hated it. I wanted to strangle every single character by the end of the movie. I just wanted to scream out to the main character "Grow some balls and do something!" Anyways...

Amazing how Avatar got so much accolade when several good science fiction flicks came out last year.

I just finished watching Surrogates last night and was very pleased with what I saw. Cool idea, somewhat similar to the concept of Avatar at least in the aspect of a flawed human being able to live within a tube while controlling a avatar in the real world. Unfortunately both never really explore the idea as much as they should.

1. Moon - A
2. District 9 - B+
3. Surrogates - B-
4. Avatar - D

There are a couple of other sci-fi films from the year that I have yet to see.

Not only late, but wrong, as there's no mention of Black Dynamite and yet has both Avatar and Inglorious Basterds.

I own Black Dynamite but haven't seen it yet. Avatar has great technical achievements, and while it's weak substance wise it's extremely strong in visuals. Inglorious Basterds while it might be my least favorite Tarantino (which isn't bad) it's his most artistically accomplished.

So? You already know your tastes are rather heterodox, so you shouldn't expect that other people to react in the same way as you do, pointing out to the same movies as exceptional. I still haven't watched black dynamite, and I also not planning to watch it soon. Basically, there are two types of movies: those that everyone watched and those that only you watched and your example fits the second. Black dynamite (judging from the cover, screenshots and synopsis) looks like something that only few film critics and buffs would place above Avatar and Inglorious Basterds, for instance.

The only 2009 movie I have seem (though I don't know if it was released in 2009 in the US, but someone could easily get it until the end of the year) which I would give 5 didn't receive a single mention there (it's the only 2009 movie in my top 100 favorites) and I am not complaining, because I know my tastes and experience with film aren't the most ordinary among westerners, I don't expect others to watch it as well.

8. Inglorious Bastards

The Inglorious Bastards was released in 1978, not 2009. ;)

He just likes reminding people. Usually without elaboration. Repeatedly.

I don't get it either. ;)

Yes, if I don't go around telling people how wrong they are, how can I expect them to know. :D
