View Full Version : ABC’s "V" Remake
ABC's 'V' invading soon
ABC's "V" is invading sooner than you might think. In the final panel of the TCA press tour, producers announced the show will premiere Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m., taking over the time slot for "Shark Tank."
"V" was originally planned for midseason, but at Comic-Con producers noted the show had been moved up to November.
Though serialized shows tend to do better in the spring when they can run straight through without interruption from the holidays, going in November could be the smarter play this season. With ABC's "Lost," NBC's "Day One" and Fox's "24" airing in the spring, there's a lot of serialized heavy hitters coming after the first of the year, so launching a sci-fi show in the fall might work better.

Is ABC’s ‘V’ In Trouble?
http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/v-logo-00.jpg
ABC’s ‘V‘ is slated for a November 7th premiere and for curious fans of the original series, it can’t be soon enough to see what ABC has done to it in this latest incarnation.
Yet you may wish to temper your complete enthusiasm for the first season of ‘V‘ because ABC is (as they put it) splitting up the season.
Yes, you read that right. ABC is splitting up the season. They’re going to run the first 4 episodes in November, leaving the 4th episode as a sort of cliffhanger. This will then set the stage for a mid-season return.
Maybe.
It’s all rather confounding. Apparently there’s been a flurry of speculation that the series is having problems of one fashion or another.
The production shut down of ‘V’ (http://screenrant.com/v-remake-brusimm-24387/) that took place in late August is helping fuel lots of rumors. The rumors are ranging from the series is dead to what has been filmed will be aired as a mini-series.
Yet ABC and Warner Bros. TV says episode 4 is getting ready to be filmed (mid-October) and then they will go on a holiday hiatus.
Huh? Did they just say, “No, it’s not in trouble, but we’re going to take a holiday break months ahead of schedule.”?
Any good corporate entity has to put on the smiley face. And it's odd that this comes on the tail end of a WGA mediation that ruled that ‘V‘ is a remake (http://screenrant.com/v-remake-brusimm-24387/), and as such, has to credit the original series creator, Kenneth Johnson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0425540/).
So hang tight gang and be patient. That’s all we can do until they resolve their issues with ‘V‘.

Watch The First 9 Minutes Of ABC’s V
http://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/v-logo-00.jpg
ABC has made available the first 9 1/2 minutes of V and you can watch it below..
In the video they try to tie into the emotions one might have felt when JFK was shot or on September 11th. They ask you where were you when these events happened - and where were you this morning. Meaning, the morning that the visitors arrive.
If you live in California, you might have an issue or two as the ground shakes with the arrival of the ship. The first of 29 ships that arrive on Earth.
ABC released this quip alongside the video:
An image of Anna, the leader of the V’s, is projected worldwide as she talks about people joining together.

V is scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, November 7th.

Well the premiere has aired and like i stated in the shoutbox, I enjoyed it much so. Elizabeth Mitchell is great and I was very impressed with the show in full. Not only the characters, but how the writers shaped this remake and its storyline. The preview for the upcoming V episode(s) look even more promising.
Has anyone else watched the premiere on ABC? If so, share your thoughts.
I plan on watching it on DVR tonight! I will post thoughts when we finish it! :D
Oh great.. nobody on Movieforums watched V, yet I finally get someone to respond to the thread and it's spam.
Edit: thanks for deleting it :D
Ok - Sorry it has taken me so long to respond! :D
I have yet to watch last night's episode, but I will comment on the pilot.
Overall, I liked it. I liked the tone of the show, and pretty much the entire cast, with an exception here and there. As a fan of the original, a couple of things bothered me a bit (like completely reversing the meaning of the spray painted V), but stuff like this are minor quibbles.
Morena Baccarin (Firefly) was STELLAR, as was Liz Mitchell (Lost). I think Baccarin played Anna perfectly, with enough ambiguity yet still maintaining the underlying dread the character should have. She was creepy, and it worked. As I stated earlier, i though ost of the cast were good - most of the cast. Laura Vandervoot is a terrible actress. I hated her on Smallville, and she is just as wooden here, maybe more so. Hopefully they keep her part to a minimum, but I have a feeling they are going to develop a sort of Romeo and Juliet relationship between her character (Lisa?) and the son of the FBI agent (Tyler?).
Also - I think it was a mistake to run just an hour long pilot. The material certainly seems strong enough to warrant a two-hour treatment, and some of the plot points and especially the two reveals at the end seemed VERY rushed. I'm glad they got the reveals out of the way, because let's face it, most people knew the twists were coming. One of the pitfalls of re-imaginings, I guess.
Overall, a promising start and I will continue to watch the show as it airs, starting with episode 2 on DVR tonight!

My only problem with it is how can a guy with lizard skin not tell his girlfriend by her standards he is really repulsive and still be a sympathetic character? I bet that lady FBI agent's partner is an alien spy.

Well, I would be very surprised if he was an alien spy...
Oh wait, no I wouldn't - because they clearly and definitely revealed this in the very first episode.
Maybe...watch the show next time? Guessing doesn't really work very well.

Anybody other than me watching this? I have never seen the original series, but this show is making me want to go get it. Should I? Should I not?
Anyway - so far, enjoying the show. Im loving the choice of Morena Baccarin as the High Commander, though a part of me wonders if all the compliments to her beauty are also backhanded insults as an underhanded suggestion that she looks reptilian? :D I definitely think they have shots of her standing particulary still with just her eyes moving, and they are quite eerie and sinister. The point, I guess.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t313/theladycat/full.jpg
The other thing the jury is still out on is the use of Elizabeth Mitchell (from Lost). I really wanted to like her in Lost, because it seemed she was always always the loser, and I'm nothing if not a sucker for the underdog. However, I'm not sure she's coming across any better in this role - believable, but am I buying what she's selling? Not sure yet.
Finally, just glad Joel Gretsch got back in front of the camera, because what red-blooded woman wouldnt want to look at THAT guy? The cancellation of The 4400 was a sad, sad day for Gretsch fans everywhere.
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t313/theladycat/19108065.jpg
Plus, he can act. But y'know. Priorities! :D
Anyway, thoughts?
I was looking up the old show, and ran across something on Wikipedia that suggested that the new show was a censure of the Obama presidency, and that it would be a show that would rankle Dems and please Repubs. I was surprised. The show hardly reminded me of Obama per se - if nothing else, I thought of it as a sort of the paranoid conspiracy theorists take on government, in its entirety. Plus, I like the show, so n'yah! :)
In fact, it was said in the same article that the original series was a take on the evils of Facism, and this series may be seen as a take on the evils of Religion. They definitley focus more on the religious aspect, rather than governmental conspiracy - to me. In this way, it reminds me of The 4400. Lastly, it doesnt really bother me that they would update the show's plot thematically to make it more relevant. You dont see too many current spy or war movies about the Cold War or Vietnam anymore, do you? Why? Not as relevant. Instead, our spy movies focus on other countries, and our war movies (if not blatantly historical) as well. Social relevancy is pertinent, and I dont have a problem with it.
Other than that, any thoughts on the show?

I love the original show but haven't seen this. For some reason I thought they were making a V movie; seems I was wrong. All I want to know is, are the aliens still slimy lizards? That was what I thought was so cool about the original show.

I think this is going to be shown on Sci-Fi over here early next year. I'll certainly check it out, but I haven't gotten my hopes up. For a start, Diana was much better looking in the 80's.

I give ABCs V 2.5/5. I have seen every episode and I'm pretty into it. I can say this my wife loves this show.I think this show could and will get better.Ill be watching either way. My wife won't let me miss an episode. I'm still wating for the revolutionarys to start kicking butt. The whole alien human romance a little twisted.Good to see Scott Wolf has a job again and I think he's giving the best performance.I'm very interested to see the hole story behind his character and where its goingm I've actually havnt seen the original but have heard a lot of mixed reviews on it. Either way I'm going to borrow it off my brother and watch it....
Hey HoneyKid - who can compete with 80's big hair? :D We're just gonna have to call you winner on that one!

Oh right - the reporter! (whom I fondly call the "Michael J. Fox look-a-like" - all he needs now is feathered hair, jeans and a bomber and the Delorean). I do agree that his story is interesting, but I'm slightly irritated because they billed him as the intrepid reporter who becomes uncomfortable with Anna's deceit, and does some digging of his own. I had visions of .....you know....responsibility? perhaps a little danger? Instead, on his charted course of professional responsibility, he attacked the V's only to veer safely off onto the ramp of Personal Egotism and power tripping. I dont know. I'm willing to give him time, but his story has actually become boring to me. Plus, if nothing else, its a censure of Media responsibility - and it shows how they often give too little, too late. I mean, Wolf's character has already given them the world - or at least America's ratings - on a silver platter. Call me a harsh judge, but I think for a change so massive (and potentially detrimental to the world as we know it) he should have had more in sight than jumpstarting his personal career.....
by the by - when it comes to bald and beautiful chocolate, I do prefer Richard T. Jones

to Morris Chestnut
http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t313/theladycat/morris-chestnut-1-sized.jpg
..but I think its because Jones can actually ACT better. At the very least, he's proven better at playing the conflicted good guy.

The original V wasn't corny, it's dated. It's not the same thing. Better storyline? The writing might have more detail, it's strokes less broad, but I doubt it's a better storyline. As for entertaining. That's a personal thing, but I can't see it happening for me. Even if I really like it, I doubt I'll like it as much. Here's hoping though.
ABC has set March 30 as the return date for "V." It will follow "Lost" Tuesdays at 10.

I watched the originals and really liked them. I was kinda excited for this remake because I thought that it would work...I watched the first episode and I'm just not feeling it. The original cast and acting and...it's not bad so far, but I doubt I'll follow it after the third episode if it doesn't strike my fancy soon.

I'm going to have to agree with honeykid. I may give it a go, but I just LOVE the original, plus the cast, and I'm not too fond of remakes. Yes Mack, even the hair. ;) Plus, I just viewed the trailer awhile ago, and it seems too Independence Day at the start, or what I assume is the start. The supposed earthquake, and everyone going outside to watch the enormous spaceship hover over them.
Plus, honeykid left off an important actor . . .

My problem with this show is they revealed WAY TOO MUCH in the first episode. What could have been cool having fans guess who is an alien or not, they flat out tell you almost everyone in the first episode. I wanted that mystery and puzzlement, but didn't get it.
Out of all the new serial dramas that are new, I'm watching FlashForward, which is still pretty lackluster, but interesting.

Given the numbers, my guess is that both V and Flashforward won't be returning. Flashforward is a bit of a surprise, but V being done after a season won't surprise me at all.
Given the numbers, my guess is that both V and Flashforward won't be returning.
I enjoy Flashforward alot. With the season wrapping up May 27th, and the storyline coming to a close, I hope they decide to either move the show to another network, or better yet put out a series of Flashforward DVD releases to coincide with the series if the show doesn't get picked up again.
I cant really muster up enough enthusiasm to even TRY to watch Flashforward, and I love scifi tv. so - it goes to show how poorly the show is doing, imho. V, on the other hand, continues to hold my interest. I think the show is less about shadowy plots and big reveals than it is about character drama and relationship investigation.
just saying.
Yeah, I think going the route of "Who's the alien?" would have been a mistake, and I am glad they didn't head that direction. BSG already did this for many seasons with the whole sleeper cylon concept, and V, already a poor attempt at BSG cloning, would have mishandled it, as their writers are nowhere NEAR as good as Ron Moore et al. The fact that they avoided this concept doesn't mean they are doing a good job, though.
So...no mention of the ridiculously poor special effects and incredibly contrived screenplay in this week's episode?
The stuff with Georgie coming to the ship just reeked of Deus Ex Machina used in the worst way possible. None of it made any sense. Why did they think Ryan was in trouble and needed help - It had just been a couple of hours, and no sign of trouble had presented itself to those on the ground. The whole set-up with the stabbing was so telegraphed and senseless... Why did the guard notice Ryan at just the right time to set up the stabbing incident, when he was just walking along with some other Vs? And don't say it was because he was in a friggin T-shirt and the other Vs weren't. Why did the guard zone in on him while an incredibly suspicious human escaped his notice just a few paces away? Why did Georgie stab the guard instead of just distracting him or causing a disturbance some other, less deadly way? Why did the shuttle just continue its launch right after someone was murdered just outside the shuttle door?
Why? Because this was one of the most contrived scripts ever written.
I can see these writers frantically trying to cobble their screenplay together while trying to maintain their overall season-long plot outline they seem to have randomly set up beforehand. It's as if they knew they had to come up with a tense situation, so they just threw out arbitrary ideas until something sounded like it might work, then tried to develop the story around the idea even after discovering none of it made sense in the context of what was already happening in the show.
I dunno what it is, but since the show came back on, I could swear it is being handled by an entirely different crew than the 4 episodes we got in 09. It's plastic, rigid, and bland. Some of the dialogue was painful and cringe-worthy. The direction is narrow and reserved, rife with cliche and corner cutting. The set-ups look goofy and the interior ship effects look like they were lifted off Kurt Whimmer's Amiga after he made Ultraviolet, the only other source I can think of with worse effects.
I am pissed because this show started off VERY strongly, and then went RIGHT into the toilet when it returned for its full season. This just can't be the same crew that did the first 4 episodes.
There were a few saving graces, like the scene between the priest and the reporter, which was written pretty well and acted decently enough.

I was a huge fan of the original V back in the '80s and I do like this one as well.
However I do agree that the writing here is way sub-par.
http://i42.tinypic.com/2i9s70x.png
For one thing, all the humans in this world are really really gullable.
Why in the hell do they believe every little thing the Vs tell them?
And what's up with those shots they were going to give everybody.
Doesn't it usually take years to get drugs approved by the FDA? Yet the world is ready and willing to take a vile of some unknown alien drug and inject all it's people with it under the guise of a cures-all remedy?
http://i44.tinypic.com/zl2qvr.jpg
The holographic technology used to find the bomber guy was ridiculous but their security tech, despite the cameras in the uniforms, is pathetic.
They can track imaginary fingerprints with holograms but they can't tell if one of their own people injected the top security prisoner with something that killed him.
I think maybe their science is so super-advanced, it goes full circle and dumbs itself out.
http://i39.tinypic.com/1hyypl.jpg
My biggest gripe is when the resistance kills a V.
I know the one guy disintegrated himself but not all the dead ones have, like James May's girlfriend for instance.
Take one of those bodies and reveal it to the world as a lizard already.
That was a huge plot point in the original series.
http://i40.tinypic.com/5a2l5g.jpg
I just wanna see them revealed as mammal-eating lizards before the Soylant Green goes on the market.

I just wanna see them revealed as mammal-eating lizards before the Soylant Green goes on the market.
what he said! yknow I was all fired up to argue with Sedai on that point, but then I watched the 4th episode myself, and it stole all my thunder. The writing IS bad. I console myself though, that SGU and 24 are worse, so in a world where every shows sucks, you just brave it on through, right? I havent yet been able to muster the enthusiasm to watch ep 5....
You know, I hate to double post, but after seeing the last few eps, I gotta ask: am I the only one getting bored with the plodding pace of plot development? I mean goodness - I found myself repeatedly and in various eps waving my forefinger in that familiar horizontal circle that is the uniform language for "hurry up" or a very bored, very annoyed "cut to the chase."
No really. Cut to the chase. If this is the writer's best foreplay, it cant be good that I'm already bored to tears.
I'm sick of hearing how humans are selling themselves cheap. I'm sick of watching clandestine meetings. I'm sick of seeing Mitchell "almost" get caught at work (I mean, how many times are they going to run that tired plot up the flagpole?) I'm sick of bitter recriminations about lying to family members. I'm sick of everyone and their mother exploring their inner feelings. I'm sick of all these weak second thoughts from doggone MIDDLE-AGED adults who knew what they were getting themselves into. I, even I want to reach into the screen grab somebody, anybody by the throat and tell them to grow a pair and get on with it.
So yeah. I'd like to tell the writers that when we first started seeing each other there was a spark there. But then they kept talking. What a shame.
In other news, I finally figured out where I recognized the High Commander Anna (or Morena Baccarin) from. Its from Firefly!

I disagree. She actually looks attractive with long hair. ;)
I've only seen about 4 episodes so far, but it sounds like this is suffering from the fact that it's a mini-series that's been stretched to a season.
People keep telling me this, and I have to clarify that I dont disagree. I'm a fan of long hair myself, but its a rare woman that can rock a do that short and still exude that level of femininity. (INTERMISSION: Not really relevant, I know, but I've been fixated on female hair choices since I lost my entire head of hair to an illness in 12/2008 - its finally grown back out to shoulder length. 4-5 more inches and I'll be back to normal! So my hair is the subject of much discussion for everyone that remotely knew me before "the great chop." They're fixated on my hair, I'm fixated on everyone's hair. :D)
It's amazing how a little thing like a hairstyle can change a person's entire appearance. In this case, Baccarin was younger during Firefly as well, and you can tell. ;) I think they went for short to express power. In Firefly, however, she was a high-class escort. Ynow. A hooker. The long tresses flowing wild and free attract the appropriate attention. ;)

IMO, a woman has to be good looking to make a really short do work. Pretty works better than beautiful, IMO, which is one of the reasons I think she looks better with long hair.
Also, in that pic at least, her head looks much too small for her body. :D

back to the show - nice to see Hobbes finally get some real face time, and its about time they let the big mean terrorist come out and play. my supposition, though, is that they are going to pull a Guerrero from Human Target on his latest antics, and make him be the good guy pretending to be bad to get the drop on the real bad guys.
Unless they dont, and then he'll just be another character to hate. :D And finally "Erica" is shaping up like she's going to start playing politics with the big girls, so here's hoping. Maybe, just maybe....we'll get some movement on this little tale.
I just want to jump to the run and gun part. :dizzy:

Ok, so this show, over the last 4-5 episodes, became a giant tub of AWESOME. They picked up the pace with developments, and came up with a pretty strong story for the last half of this season. The return of Jane Badler as Diana, which at first seemed silly to me, just flat out worked. They ditched the hard dichotomy and blurred the lines a bit, something the show desperately needed. Early in this season, the lethargic pacing and typical "Anna makes threats but does nothing" motif wore thin quickly. I've grown to like Laura Vandervoort a lot more and I think she's brought her acting up significantly since her stint on Smallville. Her role as Lisa, Anna's daughter, has given her more to work with, especially over the last few episodes. So, there's hope for the show! I look forward to season 3.

I stopped watching this before the end of the last season. I have to admit that I was tempted to check back in with it when I saw that Diana was back. Not sure how many episodes in to the second season we are.
Season 2 just ended - I think really only the last 4-5 episodes have been good. You can probably skip the rest and be OK.
