View Full Version : HBO Making Game of Thrones

Seems HBO is making a new series from the Games of Thrones novels. It's a medieval fantasy. The reason I'm excited is that Sean Bean is cast in a lead role and he gets to be noble, probably carries around a sword, and gets to dress up in costume.

Yum!

There's lots of info on the Internet about it and it seems fans of the novels have wanted Sean Bean cast. Here's some info from this link:

http://www.scificool.com/sean-bean-and-his-game-of-thrones

Martin’s Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. The story of these two families and their struggle to control the Iron Throne dominates the foreground; in the background is a huge, ancient wall marking the northern border, beyond which barbarians, ice vampires (http://www.scificool.com/sean-bean-and-his-game-of-thrones/#), and direwolves menace the south as years-long winter advances. Abroad, a dragon princess lives among horse nomads and dreams of fiery reconquest. They start shooting soon. If it's like Rome and the Tudors, I think it will look great and be rather entertaining. I'm hoping, anyway. I haven't seen Sean in anything lately that is this meaty and wonderful.

Peter Dinklage is in the cast, too. Yea. :D

Ooh, that's interesting. My friend has been on at me to read this for ages and leant me his copy which I'm now about a third of the way through. So far I like it, I think it would make a good tv series.

Fantasy really isn't my favourite genre, but I have read the first book in this series. After hearing the praise that it was getting from friends who are fantasy fans and from other places. I thought it might be one of those books that can sometimes cross over from being fundamentally a genre book to something that can be read and enjoyed by non-genre fans (which was basically how it was described to me). And whilst it wasn't as great as I felt most were making it out to be, it wasn't bad, but not something to get overly excited about. I haven't felt the need to pick up the second book yet which probably tells you a lot about how I really felt about it - but maybe I will, one day.

Anyway, if it's ever shown over here - I suspect it will be, most HBO shows are - I will watch it.

I should probably add that I've read more about it and it seems this is a pilot and would still have to be picked up by HBO. They start shooting at the end of October.

They've lined up a pretty nice cast. They've got a nice built-in audience already with the fans of the books. I love fantasy so even without Bean (which is what sparked my interest), I'd probably want to see it.

Brother Blue, where is "over here?" -- do you live in Europe?

I've read all the books so far. Unsure which "lead" they would have Bean cast for, as there isn't really a lead, per se.

The two reasons I like these books the most, in that they are of tremendous scope, and that they have a whole set of 'lead characters" amongst which the point of view constantly rotates, are the two reasons this could have trouble working on screen.

I will of course watch it when it hits, as I love these books.

I think that's why it will work quite well on screen. It's similar in that respect to Rome or The Tudors, different groups of characters each with their own agendas, interacting with one another.

I'm not sure who Sean Bean would play either - the closest thing to a 'lead' (at least as far as I've got which is half way through the first book) is Eddard Stark so I'd take a guess at him...

tramp
09-28-09, 04:18 PM
yep, Eddard "Ned" Stark is who he's playing. Word is the author wanted him and he was mentioned by fans as well.

Glad to see there is some interest here. Maybe I should get the first book...

I just finished Game of Thrones. Brilliant, but it doesn't really finish the story. I want the next book now! I
really hope they do make the tv series.

It certainly doesn't finish the story. Prepare yourself for some irritation when it comes to these books. The next two installments are flippin' FANTASTIC, but I must say I never even finished the fourth book. I won't go into detail here, but a couple of problems arose:

The first and foremost is that this damn guy just can't seem to get back to writing this series. The fourth book was delayed for literally years beyond the announced publication date. The rub is that it never actually got finished. Martin dicked around with it for so long, he eventually decided tochop the book in half and release only certain POV characters as opposed to telling the story he wanted to tell. Fan and publisher pressure, which had built for years as he kept telling people it was "almost done", forced him to compromise.

Imagine my surprise when I finally got my mitts on the fourth book, only
to find a great majority of the main characters absent, while I read
chapter after chapter about characters that had only been bit players in
the previous three books. I found myself not caring about them, because
they and their stories seemed so far removed from the story I had left
at the end of book 3.

During the waiting period for book four, Martin lamented regularly on
his website about how he was having trouble making the story work for
the fourth book, as he had written himself into a corner in regards to several of the storylines. During all these, he started writing other stuff instead; comics, card games and the like.

At that point I made the decision to wait for the entire series to be completed, at which time I would approach the series again, starting from the beginning. I mean come on, I read the first three books in the frippin 90s! I can't really remember much detail about the books.

Yep, that's right, the first book was published in 1996, thirteen years ago. George is NOT a young man. I question whether he will ever finish this series, ala Wheel of time, a series I dedicated myself to reading, only to find that the author died before he could finish the series. That was over ten books!

As for Dance with Dragons, the fifth book in the series, Martin claimed it would be published very quickly, as he had already pretty much written the book, but he had to remove the content from book four to get that one out the door. He claimed it would come out in about a year. This was in 2005-2006 or so.

Last time I checked his site was around July 2009 or so, and here is what I read:

"It can't be June already. It really can't. Where have the months gone? I am so depressed."

This is after several failed attempts at finishing book five over the past 3-4 years. Researching back I see that he had posted now and then with comments stating he hoped to have book 5 finished by X date in X year, and that he would not update until it was finished. Months later he would indeed update, sometimes lashing out at fans for the nasty emails he was getting, other times claiming he was depressed or this or that.

I am of the mind that he has let all this get to his head and heart, and he is just not passionate or invested in his series anymore. He would rather write short stories, go to sci-fi conventions, or any other activity that isn't writing The Song of Ice and Fire.

All I know is, I got exactly halfway through A Feast for Crows, and had read exactly three chapters with information pertaining to the story I had been following. The rest was entirely new characters (well, bit players from the first three) getting involved with brand new plot lines that had nothing to do with any of the main narratives of the first three books. Three Arya chapters, and the rest was filler. I closed the book and never went back. I was REALLY bummed at the time, because up until then, the series had firmly entrenched itself in my "Best fantasy series ever" category. Now I doubt I will ever finish it...

This is the big problem with long fantasy series. The Wheel of Time books as you mention were the same. I think authors should either have some idea of where they are going, or give each book a little bit of closure so they can either write a sequel or not. I hate when series just get spun out without seeming to go anywhere. Often with longer and emptier installments. I was going to buy Clash of Kings straight away but now I might wait.

Just seen on Amazon you can preorder Dance of Dragons... due to be released in September 2010!

I just started my summer break, and I've been looking for a book to get my head into, so I went and purchased Game of Thrones yesterday.

Of course, I did a little digging and I see that Ned dies in the first book. Of course he dies! He's being played by Sean Bean! Every time Sean gets involved in an American or high profile studio production, he dies!

I am a bit worried about starting the series after reading Sedai's posts, but maybe it will work out. *crosses fingers*

tramp
04-20-11, 09:56 AM
This premiered Sunday and got 4.2 million viewers which is pretty good for cable. Has already been renewed for a second season.

The marketing push has been pretty intense. Big giant billboards with Sean sitting on the "Iron Throne" all over the place. HBO put a lot of money into this thing and they're gambling it will pay off.

The reviews have been extremely positive.

I broke down and subscribed to HBO to watch it. I read the first book and its pretty damn good. The characters are extremely interesting and there isn't really anything stereotypical about them. HBO has been describing this as a Sopranos type series -- full of backstabbing and ambitious characters all out for themselves. Yep, that's what it is!

I'm happy to see Sean Bean involved in such a high profile project.

With this and Doctor Who starting up again, I've got two shows to be excited about!

:D

If you get HBO, hope you checked it out... anyone?

I saw the first episode, thought it was a really good start. I liked the credits, with the map, it's always hard to remember where all the places are supposed to be in these big fantasy epics. I see that they made everyone older than in the books. I thought the guy playing Viserys was excellent, Tyrion was good too (he's my favourite character from the books). Looking forward to next week.

I like it so far, but I'm not a big fan of the nudity. I like a woman's breast or ass just as much as the next guy, but you're just bombarded with it in every drama or even comedy series nowadays. 95 % of the time, it has no bearing to the story being told or the point being made. It's just purely gratuitous. This was the case in Rome, Boardwalk Empire, Deadwood, Californication (there's like 3 new 'characters' that are just there to show their boobs EVERY episode), Spartacus (also shows male and female nudity in every single episode) and now Game of Thrones. I guess it's just cheap tricks to get some people to watch and keep watching.

I'm almost expecting a voiceover to say: "and now for some ass..."

Ah, but it seems the fact that those other shows contain a lot of nudity is somehow affecting your opinion of the material, when those other shows are completely irrelevant to the source material. The fact of the matter is that these books are just chock full of sex. It's adult fantasy for people who wanted a bit more than hobbits and elves running around. That was Martin's intention from the start. More dark magic, more violence, more sex, and evil, incestuous deeds for the villains. I mean, the sexual stuff with the Lannisters is clearly and largely an integral part of the character arcs for those two characters.

Cable shows can really only trump Network shows with heightened sex and violence, and they must do so graphically to raise the bar. The writing on regular networks has improved to the point where it's relatively equal to cable these days.

You do have a point overall, to a certain extent though. Oh, and Spartacus is terrible.

Brodinski
04-27-11, 03:51 PM
I don't know about Spartacus being terrible. I basically got what I expected, namely gladiator fights and somewhat witty dialogue. Every time someone says something the like of "remove cock from ass" I'm laughing. Maybe that's just because I like childish humour. Meh... I'm not saying it's one of the best shows right now, but just that it's not terrible. It's pretty mediocre, but I like it so far.

What I like about Game of Thrones is that you're never quite sure whether a dragon or something like it is going to show up. We saw those White Walkers in the beginning and those sure didn't seem natural unless it was a really clever ambush. You've got the dragon eggs that doesn't burn the Calisi. We've heard about the fantastical creatures lurking beyond the Great Wall (thought I'd caps that) but we haven't actually seen them. Within the universe there are the black guards who supposedly have fought these creatures but there's also the learned, noble half-man who takes it as nothing more than primitive folklore.
There's no doubt in my mind that we're going to see some fantastical ****! The question is whether it'll turn into a full fledged, Skyrim like dragon or maybe the eggs are just gonna hatch tiny dragon calves (cubs? Pups?). Maybe the Calisi is going to become a dragon summoner. Maybe the bastard Black Guard is going to become a Warder like character who fights off trolls and frost giants (not the crappy Thor ones). God I love this stuff look at that terminology!

And talk about a great cast! Everybody raves about Sean Bean and it is well deserved but I was watching Black Death the other day. I've also seen Lord of the Rings and even Percy Jackson... Yeah you get me. But he does do a very good knight slash nobleman slash... Zeus? Yeah alright.
We've got Danish Champ Nicolaj Coster-Waldau so you know it's good. We've got Peter Dinklage who shows that little people can actually act instead of just copulate with sheep in American Pie. We've got a bunch of beautiful, talented women, we've got beautiful talented guys with razors and stuff. All around man. All around.

Better than Lord of the Rings. Ooooooh.

The fiction is awesome I take it?

The cast is awesome. Sibel Kekilli from Gegen die Wand (one of my favourite films) just showed up as Shae. Like some of the others, she's not quite how I imagined the character from the books, but works really well. Charles Dance is thoroughly evil and creepy as Tywin Lannister.

It's completely kept me gripped even though I know what's going to happen.

Tyrion's still my favourite character. He is in the books, and I think Peter Dinklage's portrayal of him has made him even more likeable.

Spoilers about the Lannisters from the books...

I am amused by all the people who hate the Lannnisters and want them to die in the next episode... you'll have a long wait. I'm up to book 4.2 and most of them are still alive. Worse, I find I'm really starting to like Jaime...

Very very funny. "For those that thought this was an incredible dramatic turn of events, leave the room!" "two-legged spoiler" -- :rotfl:

Well, I must say this was incredible. I was actually a bit bored in the first few episodes -- surprisingly, since they were Sean Bean heavy -- but then the show really picked up and I was pretty excited each week. I had read the book so I knew what was coming, but after a while, I didn't care about comparing the two, I was just enjoying the look and feel of the series.

I absolutely love Peter Dinkage and that "stay low" joke from episode 9 had me laughing out loud. Of course, I wasn't laughing for long. :(

As many of you know, I love Sean Bean and well -- he did what he does so perfectly.

I will miss Sean and he is why I got interested in the first place, but the story is rather compelling and HBO did a great job. I'll be back for season 2!

I absolutely loved all the Sean Bean love that was all over the Internet with people screaming that the best actor/main character was gone! It was funny to me, too, since he dies most of the time anyway and it was no surprise to his fans!

Looking forward to season 2. That last image was pretty terrific. I couldn't tell it was CGI. It's a long time to wait, though...:(

Post contains spoilers to episode 9 & 10

Wondered how long before heard from you on this thread, tramp. The only things that can help Bean survive any film or show seems to either be by being Sharpe or faking an American accent. So, pretty standard arc for him here! But then most aren't fans and more annoyed that he was advertised as the lead and main character and feel duped. Which is entirely the point and is a bold move that sets the tone fantastically. Though, on the other hand, I like the direction Walking Dead has taken.

KK- I think I preferred that the stories were set in a World where there could dragons opposed to actually being any. I'm glad there was a pay off for Dany's story as after Khal went, I wondered if there was any story left there. I figured she wouldn't get burnt when she went in the fire but didn't expect dragons. Some ***** is gonna go down!

As a finale it was much more a segue to Season 2 than capping off anything and I suppose that can't be helped due to the nature of the show. And things are certainly heading in an interesting direction, just hope there a little bits of pay off as we go and not continual progression (I heard the books aren't even finished yet).

Big speculation now is who will play Stannis..... thoughts from book readers?

And Joffrey is possibly the biggest ***** weasel on TV. Was so hoping Arya would spiking him last episode or Sansa push him. His comeuppance will be a treat.

Hope Tyrion brings Bronn to Kings Landing.

One issue I have is the wolves- after seeing the corpse of their Mother, the threat they seem meant to portray (taking down 10 men) doesn't live up to the depiction. And wonder how budget will handle Dragons, after they obviously shied away from grander scale battles.

Last night's episode was pretty impressive. I'm really curious as to what direction the story is going to go in regards to Littlefinger and the eunuch. Their conversations are always interesting.

I had a feeling about those eggs. They just keep showing them too much for them to not have any significance. Danys story just keeps getting better and better.

This is the only show I've ever watched that had me hooked from the first episode. I'm going to miss looking forward to Sunday nights for sure.

I've been meaning to watch it. I think it'll be available on demand for quite some time though, so I won't have to rush.

I see Mark Strong as Stannis.

He seems a popular choice on other boards, glad the stupid rumour of Gerard Butler getting it turned out false.

In-cre-di-ble! A season finale that delivers, surprised me, and left me longing for more. When Sedai/Mike said the first book was good, but the 2nd and 3rd were great! LOL! Oh I can see why?! Theres so much they have to resolve, and you know theyll be introducing new stuff. Siiiiiiiiiiigh! I hope season 2 will be longer.

Some people are really upset.
I saw this video, these two black guys from L.A., and the older one tells him I died, and the young one is really pissed off that I’m dead! He keeps going, “That can’t be ****ing true. He killed off my man!” It’s fantastic. It’s so funny. I can’t stop laughing at that. They’re the last people you would expect to be so pissed off!

Done.

Good show, upset at some characters deaths and interested to see where they take it re: the last shot.

Started reading the book, can see how well the show tackled the source, have the shows images living in the words. Kind of shame couldn't make my own interpretations of the writing but it's still a great read so far even though know what's going to happen.

Love love loved this show. I haven't read the books, so not wanting to scan this thread too much just in case of spoilers (Sweetie!)

I do agree with the hate that is Joffrey.

Lots of casting news lately, all seem fairly positive choices. Liam Cunningham is pretty much best for Davos, others are all close, can't comment too much on Stannis after they messed up Renly a bit.

'Game of Thrones' in for long run, says HBO

HBO executives Richard Plepler and Michael Lombardo have declared that Game of Thrones will have a long run.

The fantasy drama was renewed for a second season back in April, with new episodes expected to air in 2012.

"I hope it lasts for 20 years," HBO programming president Lombardo told Entertainment Weekly. "I promise you we won't stop it before it's ready to stop.

"There's a great relationship fans have with the show and we appreciate that. We've never seen people get so excited about casting [decisions]."

HBO co-president Pleper also insisted that the television adaptation will continue "as long as [author George R R Martin] keeps writing".

However, Lombardo confirmed that HBO does not have a "predetermined number of seasons" in mind for Game of Thrones, and also rejected the notion of expanding each season beyond ten episodes.

"If we could do 12 [episodes], we would," he insisted. "To produce those shows in the time they have, there's no way they could physically do more than ten... without diluting the quality."

Game of Thrones executive producer David Benioff recently revealed that a potential third season will begin to branch away from George R R Martin's original novels.

That's good news. I am fine with only 10 episodes per season, I just want each season to be as good as the first.

Tom Wlaschiha joins 'Game of Thrones'

Tom Wlaschiha has reportedly landed a role in the second season of Game of Thrones.

The actor has signed up to play Jaquen H'Ghar in future episodes of the show, fansite Westeros reports.

Jaquen is a Lorathi prisoner who is recruited to the Night's Watch by Yoren (Francis Magee).

Most of Wlaschiha's previous work is from Germany, although he has appeared in the British shows The Deep and The Sarah Jane Adventures. He also starred in the one-off Matt Smith drama Christopher And His Kind.

Wlaschiha is the latest actor to sign up for Game of Thrones after Nonso Anozie and Gemma Whelan.

Other stars who have joined the cast for the second season include Liam Cunningham, Carice van Houten, Stephen Dillane, Natalie Dormer and Gwendoline Christie.

Game of Thrones is expected to return for its new season in the spring.

A mess tent collapsed on the crew when they were filming in the high winds on the North coast yesterday. Just thought I'd mention. ;)

Y'know, I should try my hand at being an extra 'cos it's filmed an hour up the road. The family have form in that area...

Finally had the time to make it through the first season, and I'm so amazed. I usually hate the stuff that takes place in this time period, which is why it took me so long to watch it, but this had me hooked after the first episode. I can't wait for season 2.

Finished season 1 two nights back. Holy cow. I did NOT see some of that coming!!

Mainly: Ned Stark getting shorter. WTFingH!!!

Some completely awesome female characters, here. LOVE Daenerys, Arya and Cat. The reveal of the dragon hatchlings was fantastic and gorgeous. And I can't wait to see Arya kick arse. I haven't read the books, but I'm guessing she's going to kick arse hard.

Peter Dinklage is also completely awesome. What are the odds of having an actor who is good looking, brilliant, and a dwarf? Dare I say "small"? (blahahaha) I've seen it suggested that this role was written for him. It would have to be, because that combo is rare indeed.

The art direction is generally excellent, though I have to say: those wigs are friggin' distracting. The sets make up for that, though.

Looking forward to season 2.

I can not wait. Finished the book's recently so it's hard to comment without alluding to what I know is coming.

Surprised at love for Cat, though. She's generally one of the most reviled characters.
