"Before you judge me, try hard to love me" ~ Michael Jackson, Childhood
Here's the video for the song Childhood from 1995's HIStory album.
This song reveals why Michael appeared eccentric and weird to the world in his own words. It has gained new life in light of his death.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVJscGa5vbc&fmt=18
The lyrics:
Have you seen my Childhood?
I'm searching for the world that I come from
'Cause I've been looking around
In the lost and found of my heart...
No one understands me
They view it as such strange eccentricities...
'Cause I keep kidding around
Like a child, but pardon me...
People say I'm not okay
'Cause I love such elementary things...
It's been my fate to compensate,
for the Childhood
I've never known...
Have you seen my Childhood?
I'm searching for that wonder in my youth
Like pirates in adventurous dreams,
Of conquest and kings on the throne...
Before you judge me, try hard to love me,
Look within your heart then ask,
Have you seen my Childhood?
People say I'm strange that way
'Cause I love such elementary things,
It's been my fate to compensate,
for the Childhood I've never known...
Have you seen my Childhood?
I'm searching for that wonder in my youth
Like fantastical stories to share
The dreams I would dare, watch me fly...
Before you judge me, try hard to love me.
The painful youth I've had
Have you seen my Childhood...

Michael's iconic performance of Billie Jean at Motown 25. This performance elevated Michael to international superstardom, and introduced the world to the moonwalk.
With every move Michael makes, and the audience's cheers, it's still exciting watching it today!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RuxoCDfbjU&fmt=18
I have always been a bit annoyed by this performance. The lip-syncing is I guess forgivable, as it was pretty common then, and he was dancing a lot. I just feel like for all the accolades this gets for the dancing, his dancing is not that great. He just sort of does the same shuffle for 90% of the performance, throwing out moments of brilliance now and then. It's pretty average
Don't get me wrong - I like MJ quite a bit.
I feel like this video has some CRAZY innovative dancing in it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ex30DYwQlHU
His animations, footwork, speed changes and timing are ridiculously crisp. Yeah, he uses a gimmick for the lean, but the rest of the stuff is so well done, I just don't care. I have met many people (myself included) that can mimic this guys moves, but no one can come close to the level of precision and quality MJ achieved in this sequence. Amazing stuff.
The lip-syncing is I guess forgivable, as it was pretty common then,
Unless it's an actual live performance, everyone lip-synchs in a music video.
and he was dancing alot
Well yeah, it's Michael Jackson. :p

Are you serious? His dancing is not that great? It's pretty average?
Man, no offense, but you have no idea what you're talking about. To say that Michael's dancing is beneath greatness and average is like saying Steven Speilberg is not a movie genius.
Nobody had the moves nor the charisma that Michael had. His every move on stage was better than the other, especially inthe Motown 25 performance, regardless of the lipsynching.
And yes, I do agree that Smooth Criminal is one of his best music videos. I love that song and its video. Thanks for adding it.

These videos gave me the chills!

I like that we have a new thread called a "tribute" thread. I also love that flash mob stuff, it's so cool!
I teach a Media class, and every year I try to do something different to introduce my class. Last year, I showed a scene from the Dark Knight and wrapped it into a lesson; this year, I did Michael Jackson. It was a huge hit with my students, thank god. If I can get them to "like" my class in the first week, they're much more cooperative all year! :)
Lol, I showed "Beat It" and was a bit concerned because these are 13 year old boys.... and yep, 2 classes were a bit too immature to handle it. I wanted to communicate the anti-violence/anti-gang sentiment, though.
Sedai, I agree, Smooth Criminal has some amazing dancing there. I also think the Motown 25 video shows a young performer before he perfected his particular signature moves. Nevertheless, this was a pivotal moment in music history/pop culture and in Jackson's career. It was the moment he became a star.
Among my favorite videos are: "Earth Song," "They Don't Care About Us," "Smooth Criminal," and this video, which not many know about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_quXnUa2bc
The style of this video is rather amazing; love the many "storylines," and how it communicates so clearly the idea of loneliness. It's also one of Michael's greatest songs, imo.
I've also noticed how many of my students have become fans since Michael's death. They knew about him but hadn't really listened to him. It's kinda sad that so many have just "discovered" him, but I'm just glad they did.

Clearly, you didn't read my entire post, especially the part in which I said many people can immitate his moves, but no one will ever match his level of skill and quality. Then I go on about his impeccable animations (this is a dance term, not talking cartoons here), his timing and speed changes, and pretty much praise him up and down. Reading my post, one can clearly understand I was saying the Motown 25 performance is a bit average in comparison to the smooth criminal video, where his level of skill and creativity in through the roof. Sorry, but the majority of his dancing in the Motown25 performance just isn't that exciting; he pretty much just shuffles back and forth the entire time. It's good, just not amazing. The highlights of the video is definitely the moonwalk section and a couple of other flashes of brilliance.
As to not knowing what I am talking about: I have been street dancing for decades. I started in Jr. High School in 1983, during the popping and locking fad that was prominent at the time. I didn't dance as much in the early 90s, as I was focused on other things, but in the late 90s, I started attending raves and began seriously dancing again, which I still do to this day. I still pop here and there, as well as some tutting, liquid, 'botting, and animation.
So, I do know at least something about dancing, specifically isolation styles. MJ is one of the best dancers that has ever lived. That particular performance is just not on a level with much of his other work.
@ JRS - I was talking about a live performance in regards to the lip syncing; the Motown 25 performance that everyone is discussing, to be exact. I had posted the Smooth Criminal video to showcase some of what I consider to be MJ's best dancing. Catch up, please. ;)

Thank you for your contribution Tramp. I've realized the same thing in regards to people, especially kids, getting into Michael Jackson now after his death. They say, "you don't know what you had til it's gone". We had Michael, and now we've lost him forever. The world realized how much they really did love and adore him once the news broke that he passed. It was shocking and sad, and this is the only reaction people have to a pop culture phenomenon dying. They indulge in his music, and performances. At first I called them hypocrites since they were probably the same people who called him a freak, weirdo, and uncool just hours before his death. But now I've realized that deep down inside, people DID love him. If only he were alive to see how much the world misses him.
Here's one of my favorite songs and videos for him: MAN IN THE MIRROR. This is Michael's legacy.
P.S. I love Stranger in Moscow, and do agree it's one of his greatest and underrated songs.

I LOVE this song! I do tend to like rock a lot, though... great song with Slash playing guitar. :)
EDIT: Sedai -- I didn't know you were a dancer! That's wonderful. :)
It really was amazing how he was able to bring the rock and Motown worlds together - an accomplishment of tremendous magnitude.

Interesting, isn't it? People said horrible things about him before his death. I had even lost track of his 90s music, but I'm not sure if that had anything to do with him but more about me. Yet, the truth is many people had written him off. I also heard many people just assume he had molested children, yet after his death, I was heartened to see how many decided to really look at that and not jump to a conclusion.
Oprah was completely silent about his death. Seemed she thought him guilty. I just read where she was going to do (or did) a show as a tribute to him. Did she change her mind? Did she look a bit deeper into his life?
I'm a much bigger fan now. I feel rather guilty about that in a way, but after he died, I got really curious about him as a person and saw many interviews, etc., that made me fall in love with him a little. I also looked harder at the messages he was sending through his music which were positive and desirous of a better world. He really was special. Before his death, it was easy to follow the media narrative that he was a freak and weirdo.
It's fascinating to me that people honestly began to embrace his music and him instead of falling into a trap of "the weirdo is dead." I think that speaks volumes about his music and talent. And I don't think we were embracing a bad person who suddenly looked good after death. I think he was good... and a victim of others. I also think he made some crucial mistakes that we can feel some empathy for, even if he is also a lesson as to the danger of too many drugs and too much money.
This really is a story of appreciating someone more after they're gone. Kinda sad but better than the alternative. :(

I've always been a fan of Michael Jackson, ever since I was in ealry elementary school. I'm almost 32 now, so I've been a fan of his for almost 27 years. I never lost interest in him nor his music. I got into other forms of music especially grunge, alternative rock, and britpop, but Michael remained special. I must admit that the media's constant coverage of "everything weird Michael Jackson" got to me in a way that I just did not want to hear anything about him anymore because everything that was being said was negative about him. I longed for him to make a striking comeback to shut everybody up, but unfortunately that wasn't to happen.
I do believe that the media played a huge role in his death. The day he died, I was so stunned and so angry that I blamed the media for breaking, and literally killing, his heart. I don't think that even Michael knew how the world would turn on him the way they did, especially here in the States. He thought that whatever he did, people would still see the young boy in him, but they didn't. People were to judgmental of him and accused him of eccentricities that, I'm sure, he had nothing to do with, and I am refering to the child molestation charges. Michael was an innocent and pure soul. He was a child in a man's body longing for the childhood he never had the pleasure of experiencing. I doubt that anything evil was on his mind when he hosted those sick kids in his house.
Like his brother Marlon mentioned at his memorial, they will now finally leave him alone.

I agree, mojofilter. The media was pretty relentless. I'm also pretty appalled at how judgmental Americans tend to be, but don't get me started on that. We are among the most judgmental people in the world.
One of the videos I watched that I had never seen when he was alive was when a grocery store had been opened for him by a friend so he could see what it was like to go shopping. On the one hand, it showed how strange his life had to be, on the other hand, I saw a funny and life-loving man that was truly endearing. He was an innocent and a man-child, but unfortunately that left him open to relentless attacks and people that wanted something from him.

Michael Jackson is arguably the best artist ever to bless the stage and I am still saddened by the untimly death of such a star. Since I was a young boy I have loved his music and even though im a death metal fan his music is still in my collection and on the iPod. People are entitled to thier views and thoughts about him but MJ has touched us all with his music, his videos and ofcourse his legendarly dance moves.
He went far to soon for us music fans and Im just chuffed that his music will go on and on, he will never be forgoten :nope: My favorite songs are as follows:

PHEW, still get loads of chills from this.
I'm here clarify on my recent (quite out of the blue) MJ related actions on this site. For one, I've been undergoing an early transcending period in my life. The best way to put it, would be: "different." In that period, I've gotten back into Michael Jackson's Music. I grew up on Michael's Music. Non-Stop.
And as of very recently, I've done a large extent of research on the guy, and I was shell-shocked to read the details of both of the Child Sexual Abuse Trials. I found out a lot more about Michael afterwards--so and so, etc. It actually made me sad, like a lot. I felt like I misjudged him, and the public did too. (Which they did.) I'm a good judge of character. And Michael was, in all of my 'research', No Sexual Deviant. In my humble opinion; he was an absolute genius (albeit very emotionally damaged) man-child who was used by others for their own gain. It's a really sad story.
Plus, my father was a child molester. That doesn't automatically make me the ultimate expert on these things... but, c'mon. Just trust me on this.

Just his mannerisms alone... wow.
Did he have any voice and movement training? I read somewhere he did not, and was a total natural.
Now do not hurt me but I was never a fan ie I never bought his records but I would listen to him on the radio, and absolutely adored him in Jackson 5 and wanted to marry him when I grew up, but I will not deny he wasa total genius when it came to his music.
The other stuff, both what was claimed about him and the claims about his childhoodwhich were both horrific - well I'm still on the fence. It was never proven 9n court, was it?
That aside, my thoughts about him as a musician wont change.
And that spoiler of yoursis incredibly sad, Cyn. I dont know how you would manage to reconcile that.

Favorite Song: State of Shock
I always felt like Michael Jackson sort of had a stunted mental development. In a weird way, I saw his actions as acting out a childhood he never had the opportunity to experience. I can't even begin to imagine the psychology of any human raised as he was, in such a bubble under such an emotionally and physically abusive father in the lifestyle that he was surrounded b,y and more or less force-fed.
He acted like a kid, in my eyes. Granted he was an adult and responsible as such, but I just never thought his mental awareness of expected social norms made it past preadolescence.
I never met the guy. I have no idea. Just my observations on what the man displayed based in no scientific reason at all.
As to his music, I love it. we share the same bday of August 29 and I remember in 2nd grade telling some friends that he and I were twins because of it. I bought a Michael Jackson spiral-bound book in grade school (rather, my mother probably did. I don't remember) that had a life-size photo of his sequined shoes. I would stand in front of the hallway mirror with the book opened to that page, propped in front of my own feet, so that I could image being Michael Jackson. I saw the "Beat It" music video for the first time during a family trip to Panama City beach. The hotel room had cable, my family home did not. Everyone was silent, in awe, of the mini-movie playing out before us. I hid my eyes during the dance/fight knife scene out of fear of bloodshed. As an aside, hat was the first time I had seen/heard the introduction to Nickelodeon's Pinwheel kid's show. That was trippy as hell, btw, and kind of freaked me out. When Weird Al came out with "Eat It," my grade school friends and I all rallied in protest at how someone could disrespect the King of Pop in such a way.
Sad I never got in a show =*(

By far, one of the most underrated songs on my favorite album of his. Really savage rhythm and flow to it all.
