According to Variety (http://tvseriesfinale.com/articles/rescue-me-season-eight-canceled/), the network has decided the show should say its goodbyes ten years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that provided the creative impetus for the series. Star Denis Leary is said to be consoling himself with a pint of Guinness and a couple of broads down at O’Shameus’s in Manhattan.
There will be 19 more episodes of the series, following next week’s season finale. It’s likely the network will split the episodes up – therefore sneakily concocting itself two more seasons.
“Rescue Me”, created by Leary and Peter Tolan, focuses on the professional and personal lives of a group of New York City firefighters in the fictional Ladder 62 / Engine 99 firehouse.
The show mainly follows veteran fireman Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) and his ever troublesome family as they deal with real life issues, either with post 9/11 trauma or domestic problems. Tommy has to struggle with the loss of his cousin and best friend Jimmy Keefe, who died on September 11, 2001, and frequently visits Tommy in visions.
Among the many ‘name’ guests that stopped by “Rescue Me” – Susan Sarandon, Marisa Tomei, Maura Tierney (appears in this most recent season), Gina Gershon, Tatum O’Neal, and Michael J.Fox, who popped up in several episodes earlier this year as the paraplegic boyfriend of Tommy’s ex-wife, Janet (the beautiful Andrea Roth).
