View Full Version : New Shoutbox Record
Yep, it's true: we've got a new record for most Shoutbox shouts in one day. Here's the thing, though: the "day" is only 6 hours old. The server time is set so that each new day (IE: 24 hour period) starts over at 7 PM EST. So, posting this at 1 AM EST, it's only 6 hours into this "day," and we've already got over 300 shouts...the old record was 265. Yowza.

Wow... Holden and I must have combined for more than 3/4's of those shouts :) The wonderful Oscars allowed me to pass both Sades and Toose, what a special night. ;)
I think the day finished with like 455. That's the mark now, gentlemen.

And the record hasn't been break since?

"hasn't been break" ---- WTF
I haven't checked in awhile, but I doubt it. The Shoutbox is generally less active than it used to be.

Let's go break it! Movie commentaries will take place in the shoutbox from now on!

Sounds like a plan. If I was going to be around this weekend I'd be in on that. :)

Same. :(
I'm giving some pretty serious thought to changing The Shoutbox. I'd rather not close it, but it certainly needs to be reworked, at minimum. It filled a pretty obvious need at first, and for many years, but these days people just use dedicated threads for stuff.
Open to suggestions/pleas/whatever.
Keep it on the front page, but put it right underneath the forum title on top. Maker it bigger, bolder, and something people want to play with. :)

I think that's where movie commentaries started,is it not? I remember sexy did one of the first ones and it broke either a shouts in a day or posts in a day record

Collapsible beneath the header?
I don't like visiting a separate page to check on a chat room that doesn't auto-update like the Who's Online page. If it did, maybe I'd keep it open in a separate tab, but I'm not gonna dump CPU into an auto-reload plugin for that.

If we want to break it then we need to invite some Korean spammers.

It really isn't used enough for that to be a concern unless i've misunderstood you (probably). I think there's about 20 shouts over 24 hours most days,
Well there's been 6 over the last 24 so i clearly overestimated it.

The only thing the Shoutbox needs done, more than anything, is an option where you can edit your shouts.
I don't know for sure, but I would be surprised if simply making it more prominent on the home page led to a big uptick in activity. The regulars back in the day used it for a long time and knew where it was, but still decided to outsource a lot of the stuff on there into threads. So I think, if it's going to keep existing at all, it would have to fundamentally change.
That actually does give me an idea for something I could put in its place that's still marginally similar, though...hmmm...
You could just run sports scores down there.

If it auto-updated I guarantee it would be used more.
I buy that it would be used more. But I'm not sure how much more, and it would have to be used a LOT more to be worth keeping around more or less as is.

It is worth keeping the way it is. Trust me. It just needs an edit feature.
While that's not a bad idea, I can't fathom how it could possibly lead to a massive increase in use.

The Shoutbox doesn't need a massive increase in use. Let the Shoutbox remain for people who still like to use it. It still serves a good purpose, I feel. Sometimes it can get really active. It's alerted me to a lot of news events. Celebrity deaths and such. I still like reading over the Shoutbox everyday. It has a good purpose. I fear you'll change it to something else... and this forum will just lose something that makes it feel like MoFo.
When it absolutely DIES... nobody's shouted in a month... THEN it's time to ditch it. I don't feel it's ready to go yet.
I buy that it would be used more.
I don't. Why would it be used more?
Maybe initially because it is something different but that would last a few weeks at most IMO.

If the question is whether or not to ditch it, then I'm talking about something else entirely.

Not having to keep reloading a tab eliminates discouragement.

I like how old fashioned it is. Don't go changing. You see how everyone these days is buying vinyl records? People are into vintage!

People are also regressive.

If that happens, then it'll mean I waited too long already.
Over the last five months it's averaging about a dozen a day. Screen real estate is pretty valuable, especially since it's one of just a few links underneath the header. Removing it outright is certainly a last resort, though: I'd rather try changing it first.

Gotta admit, a Subscribed Threads link would massively useful.
Also a direct link to the ACTUAL Search (http://www.movieforums.com/community/search.php?). Or even the Review Search (http://www.movieforums.com/reviews/search/any/higher).
Those are my three main bookmarks for this site.
Yeah, I'm happy with most of the redesign, but the sub-navigation is one of the few things I wish I'd done a little better.
Still toying with an idea for all this. I laid the structural and data-collection groundwork for it awhile ago, so maybe I can whip something up quicker than usual for testing...depends on how well a few other projects go.

Keep in mind that this suggestion is coming from someone who rarely reads the Shoutbox, and usually just forgets that it's even there.
Could you put the last Shoutbox comment(s) in a thin scroll along the top of the page somewhere, kind of like a newsfeed, to make it more noticeable?

I thought of that and been on many forums designed that way.
Personally, I think the real estate is too valuable for something with that level of functionality (can also be a bit of an eyesore).
Also, bear in mind that anyone's outrageous and heavily opinionated shouts will be one of the first things people see when they visit the site for the first time.
Well the Shoutbox original use was to "Shout it out" where everyone can hear it right? Go with the same formula which worked before. So if its right underneath the forum title up top, thats the first thing users see when coming to the site, is the Shout. Hence itll get more usage. The way it is now I think people might notice its there after a week or so.

What if you made a brand new subforum solely devoted to Shoutbox shouts, turning all of the shouts that ever existed into posts? You could divide all of the shouts made into threads titled after the years they were shouted in..... 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017.........
That way people could easily find shouts from different years. There could just be a huge thread for each year's shouts. It could be like a MOFO CHILL CLUB-esque subforum. You could even divide the shouts into months/years if you really wanted to go that far. That would probably make people "shout" more because it wouldn't be shouting anymore... it would be posting. Just turn every shout into a post. Create a brand new subforum for "shouting"... I don't know what you'd call it... and just eliminate the Shoutbox.

I'd prefer new users figure out we have a feature after a week than not join at all because one person had an obnoxious shout plastered at the top of the screen for a few hours. If it were collapsible the shoutbox content could at least be hidden.
There are probably better options though, namely auto-update and/or separate rooms for semi-private drop-in/drop-out movie commentaries (which would be SUPER useful, a forum thread's just not gonna compare to something like that).

That could be nice, but that could also be a ridiculous amount of effort.
Given that even regular users who did know where it was stopped using it en masse, I think it's safe to say making it more prominent isn't going to fix the issue. So while I appreciate all suggestions, I'm ruling that out as a solution, even if something like that might be part of a larger set of changes.
As for the subforums thing: I don't think anyone would spend much time just browsing years (people like browsing by topic). But if you're just suggesting that to make sure the old shouts don't vanish, don't worry: at minimum, they'll be saved and accessible somewhere, in some format. I wouldn't just ditch almost 200,000 messages.
Ok
What if the shouts, like the last 5 in a row, were visible. Kinda like the "Now Playing" thing on the right. It would look like a little brisk shout thread. That whole left side of the screen is empty, could be a good spot for it.
Anyway just throwin stuff out there.

Front pages divided into 3 columns has always bothered me visually.
