Completely agree with the Charlie Brooker programmes. They're usually one of the best of the week.

BTW, do you know that Harry Hill's TV Burp has moved to Sky? For me, this is Sky (once again) buying something just as it's gone off. HHTVB hasn't been that good for the last 12-18 months or since it became sketches and 'bits' rather than the mocking tv programmes/scenes/characters. All that stuff with the jelly and the knitted character last time out was dreadful. It's moved away from what it started as and is now more like a HH show, with his "Like the lining" 'comedy' taking prominence. My guideline for it is, once he starts mocking Corrie, it's over. For some reason, I don't get a laugh from then on.

Degrassi High ( 1989 - 1991 )

Favorite episodes:

Season 1 - Episode 11 .... 'All In Good Cause'.
Caitlin and Claude protest against a factory involved in nuclear missiles. Kathleen is tired of being abused by Scott, so she presses charges against him.

Season 2 - Episode 16 and 17 .... 'Bad Blood Part 1 / Part 2'.
Part 1: BLT starts seeing a girl named Cindy and finds it difficult to end his relationship with Michelle. Lucy has started to make videos for LD, whose cancer is in remission which has allowed LD to holiday with her father at the Islands. Joey wants a car but doesn't have any money so he bets everyone that he will walk the entire cafeteria wearing nothing but his fedora. Dwayne is shocked when he discovers that he may have gotten HIV from a girl he slept with over the holidays named Penny. Degrassi has installed condom machines in the toilets and one is vandalized by Dwayne and Nick.

Part 2: Dwayne takes an HIV test and it comes back positive. BLT confronts Michelle and finally breaks up with her, telling her that he isn't cheating on her. Alexa and Michelle later discover that BLT lied and that he has been seeing Cindy behind Michelle's back. Joey tries to pay people back for the bet, but is still coming up short and has to think of a way to get back at Dwayne. When Wheels spots Dwayne vandalizing yet another condom machine, Wheels tells Joey, who attempts to blackmail Dwayne. When Dwayne learns of this, he starts a fight with Joey. Dwayne eventually stops fighting and tells Joey that he is HIV positive.

Season 2 - Episode 25 .... 'Showtime Part 1'
Auditions are held for Talent Night with acts ranging from poetry to singing hats to dancing. Joey needs help with science. The school is suddenly thrown into turmoil when Claude commits suicide in the boys' washroom. This situation is difficult for everyone to accept, especially Caitlin.

After the finale of Justified, I am so close to saying that this is for sure my new favorite show. The acting is absolutely top notch. I can't think of a feature film in the same genre with better performances...

The only TV program with more sex and violence and even better actors than Justified is The Tudors, but lord, look at the script they have to work with! No one could make up anything as good as the truth of what went on in Henry's court. I have my system set to record both series.

One series I had a lot of hopes for when it first started was that Amazing Grace thing about the policewoman with her guardian angel Earl. But it degenerated into neurotics with guns. The crimes they were supposed to be investigating were so minimal that they could just as well been washing machine repairmen. And none of the so-called criminals were nearly as dangerous to the public and other law officers than those neurotic cops. Grace's sidekick, the gal who played George Segal's daughter in the Just Shoot Me series, is so tiresome in her role. On top of that, the actress playing Grace just doesn't do it for me. She's not good-looking enough to get even 1 boyfriend, much less lay the whole police department. Boy, talk about the poster girl for a STD sign! Too paraphrase an ol' Texas saying, if she had as many sticking out of her as she had stuck in her, she'd look like a damn porcupine!

Even with all its flaws, I love 24. It's gripping and addicting. I didn't even like it at first, but I had to keep watching just to see what happened. Then, I was hooked. The characters, while many are annoying, are terrific for the amount of time we know them. Plus, you can't get more bad-ass than Jack Bauer. In all his glory, we still get to see a human side of him too, which is why I'm always cheering for him.

Animu is TV after all. NGE of course. The greatest work of film in the history of evar. As for "real" TV, Twin Peaks. I also loved Lost for a long while, but the ending gave me massive mystery blue balls, so I've kind of disowned it. What's the point of analyzing it? They never had any intention of having any of it make sense.

I think the greatest 30 minute show in recent history was Arrested Development. Everything about that show was epic, in my opinion.

I also love The Wire, Dexter, and Community. But I binge watch all these shows. I don't really watch TV, I just watch the DVDs.

I absolutely loved Lost up until the last season. I think it was supposed to be analyzed. There were a lot of connecting themes throughout the first few seasons that I think demanded analysis. But, in the end, without giving away too many spoilers, none of it effing mattered. I did not like the ending, but how could it live up to expectations?

I'd have to say House has been my faviourite show since its pilot. Absolutely love the show. Whether its because I relate so much to the character or just find the style fun.

The earliest, oldest, best TV show I remember watching when I was a kid was "The Andy Griffith Show". I just watched two episodes yesterday from 1963, and they were both excellent and very modern, especially to me, since both involved Andy interracting with Opie's teacher, Miss Crump.

I have to show some love for Degrassi Junior High 1987-1989 and Degrassi High 1989-1991. What an amazing show. I did not start watching the show till later on in the 90's but I instantly fell in love with it :) The show deals with everyday teen life and beyond, including drug abuse, sex, Aids, bullying ,love and pretty much everything a teen will go through during the course of their lives. This was the only show I could ever relate to as a teenager so I thought I would give this TV show some love.

I would have put Angel up there had it not had a muddy 3rd and 4th season. Both these shows I have mentioned are exceptional television to the point where I don't even think of them as 'tv shows'. They transcend that, I feel. We'll never get another Buffy or Wire.

I'm not real big on television, but the last shows I can remember watching with any regularity would be

Life (2007-2009). A really good show starring Damien Lewis, about a cop wrongfully imprisoned, who is proven innocent and settles for a skillions dollars with the police/city hall/whatever. I forget the exact details.

The catch is, though, that part of the settlement is he's permitted to go back to his old job on the police force.

As he's doing his normal duties, he's also (on the side) piecing together who on the force set him up. That part of the show was a running storyline to go along with the 'weekly episode' cop stuff.

It was pretty good, and getting some really interesting twists (e.i., his partner's father (also a cop), was killed, and may have played a part in his frame up.

Anyhow, it was something I watched, but I can see how it got cancelled. If you didn't follow it, it just seemed a mess.

I also used to watch Northern Exposure. Great setting, quirky characters, storylines that were outlandish, but believeable.

These days, though, I don't watch any tv as far as network tv goes. Don't have the time or will to find something to hold my interest. 19 versions CSI/ER/SVV with the obligatory brooding hero/heroine, quirky stat person, minority, expert geek. Cookie cutter stuff.

I've tried watching the new Hawaii Five-O, but I can't stay with it. I mean, how dumb do you have to be to commit muder in Hawai???

First of all, it's HAWAII!! Palm trees, beaches, sunsets. I'f you are contemplating muder in Hawaii, you may as well just walk into the ocean, because whatever you've got, if Hawaii can't make you feel better, you're a lost cause.

Secondly, it's HAWAII!!. If you kill someone, you're not gonna get away.

I haven't read much of this thread so i don't know if my favorite has been mentioned yet.

Cowboy Bebop. Best TV show of all time. Seriously. I love it. It has great characters, great stories, great animation. Just an awesome show all around. I think it blows most US television shows out of the water.

Runners up:

Batman: The Animated Series
Breaking Bad
Samurai Champloo
Futurama
True Blood
Dexter

Oktober
10-30-11, 01:54 PM
Thinking of animations, I'd rate King of the Hill as a personal favourite, closely followed by The Ren & Stimpy Show & Futurama.

Thinking of police procedurals, I'd go for The Sweeney, the inimitable Homicide: Life on the Street, which has a cult following in my neck of the globe & the long running Law & Order series created by Dick Wolf.

Thinking of sitcoms, obviously Fawlty Towers is the best ever made, but I would include Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, Drop the Dead Donkey & Curb Your Enthusiasm as up there with the greatest.

Thinking of sci fi, I think Star Trek (TOS, TNG), The X-Files & The Walking Dead are good contenders.

That's enough thinking for this evening ... I think.

I really didn't rate the US version, to me, it was so peculiarly English it was impossible to replicate abroad. Even Judd Hirsch couldn't save it. Although I think it ran to two seasons in the US.

Sometimes shows can be transplanted successfully into other cultures, I suppose it all depends on the competency of the writers & cast. The UK version of 'That '70s Show' bombed abysmally. It deserved it.

Mind you, I've never seen either the UK or US version of 'The Office'. I count myself lucky. ;)

Indeed. I think I made it to the advert break and, frankly, I'd done it a favour hanging on that long. Ditto the horrible UK version of Married... With Children. Of those coming back the other way, I think Three's Company has got to take the prize. I prefer it to Man About The House and if you could've taken the UK's Ropers and put them in Three's Company, it'd have been perfect.

I thought I'd only be able to provide a link to prove it's existence, but I think you can even see by the opening, how lacklustre it felt. In essence, they stripped it of everything that made MWC funny so they could show it pre-watershed.

I really liked 2 Point 4 Children and, like you, Belinda Lang had a big part to do with it.

Thankfully I never saw the UK version of MWC, maybe I did once & my brain shut down & refuses to remember it. Comedy is often culturally specific but some things are universal. Obviously no one told the UK version's producers & writers that.

I think I can add Twin Peaks, The Wire & Lost to my list. I only started to get into them recently, but they're each great shows.

Also, I inexplicably left out Robot Chicken. Robot Chicken beats Family Guy, American Dad and other every other crude animated show, hands down. Definitely top 5 TV shows for me.

The Wire was superb, I don't think David Simon could write anything bad. Homicide: Life on the Street was & is a cult classic IMHO. As for Twin Peaks & Lost, well, it's best I don't say anything. I can think of a lot of things I'd rather do than watch them.

Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David is a genius!

I also love In Treatment, though third season wasn't as good as first two seasons.

Here are my favorite TV shows of all time and reasons behind em, not in any particular order:

Seinfeld (Who else can make the little things hilarious?)
Ghost in a Shell (More thought-provoking than The Matrix)
House (I love medical shows, and this one has the best people in it)
Bones (Incredible and very human cast)
The Simpsons (Really, how can you go wrong with this dysfunctional family?)
Dragonball Z (Best anime ever!)
Bleach (Very entertaining and highly emotional)
Daria (High school was pretty much this)
Breaking Bad (Was really surprised by Bryan Cranston's performance)
King of the Hill (The deadpan humor mixed with bat-s**t crazy moments always make me laugh)
Spongebob Squarepants (The only kids show I can still tolerate)
The Animaniacs (My favorite TV show as a toddler)
Batman: The Animated Series (It's Batman, and it's awesome)
Ed, Edd n Eddy (Well thought out immature humor and enjoyable characters)
South Park (The shock value is what makes this show)
Friends (The cast...nuff said)
That 70s Show (Again, you can't go wrong with the cast and a clever script)
Malcom in the Middle (The ONLY dysfunctional family done right besides The Simpsons)
any Law & Order series (Realistic moments and no annoying side stories)
Wolf's Rain (Depressing yet worth the watch)
The Walking Dead (A zombie series with heart)

I know I watch more shows than this, but I can't think of any at the moment.

There really is no competition for me...I have a ton of trouble getting interested in TV dramas. I find just about everyone of them implausible, silly and forced. That was until I feel in love with a little show called:

Breaking Bad

I'll contend that it is the best TV drama in television history. Not one thing in the show is put in it without purpose. It all feels very plausible. It never opts for cheap thrills. The slow burn build up and continuous story line lend more power to the memorable climaxes/moments. Not too much the incredible premise/writing/atmosphere/acting you name it. I absolutely adore it and highly recommend it.

Now comedies I tend to gravitate to more. I seem to enjoy the 90s sitcoms the most. Here are my fave TV comedies in order:

1.)Seinfeld
2.)Fraiser
3.)South Park
4.)Futurama
5.)Simpsons
6.)King of Queens/Everyone Loves Raymond (almost the story of my family)
7.)Home Improvment
8.)Fresh Prince
9.)Scrubs
10.)Aqua Teen

Going try out Happy Endings dvds soon heard great things.
Also they need to do an American Peep Show..only saw one episode my buddy showed me. It was really funny.

The first time I watched through Heroes I loved the first season, hated 2 & 3, and thought 4 was okay (with the exception of everything involving Claire). I recently watched through all 4 seasons again with my brother and while I still think season 1 is the best, 2 was much better than I remembered. 3 is where a lot of bad writing seemed to come in (I believe the writers strike was going on at the time). Season 4 seemed a little more like season 1, but I hated the Claire stuff even more this time because it seemed so pointless and distracted from everything else which was much more important.

You might want to check out gohastings.com, they have really cheap used seasons sometimes. My brother bought all 4 seasons of Heroes recently for around $20 combined (the last season cost him more then the first 3 I believe). I'm sure Dexter would be on there as well.

Heros had perhaps the best first season of any show I have ever seen. There was no way they were going to follow that up. Shame too the only reason I kept watching was because of Hayden Panettiere :p.

I have only watched a few episodes of Dexter and it looks like a great show. I used to also watch Entourage alot. Shows I watch right now are South Park, How I met your mother, Psych, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Community, and Rules of Engagement. I'll catch New Girl, White Collar, Franklin and Bash, Anger management, Perception and workaholics when I can.

You might have expected me to show up here after my replies in the Inbetweeners thread!

But yeh, I thought that was a really good little show, although I haven't heard many people talk about it. Despite being an Inbetweeners fan, I wasn't that mad about Will's character in this, my favourite characters are the dad and Jim. I had actually completely forgotten about the show, although a quick check on wiki shows me that season 3 should be showing at the beginning of next year :)

The Killing, the show that kicked off the a/v part of nordic noir, and i'd like to give a fond shoutout to a British iteration of the scandi noir phenomenon that my mom loved alot Broadchurch, at some point i shall sit through the whole thing, whenever i play it with dad around he spoils plot points!!
