Yahoo news is reporting Walter has passed away at 92.

Wow, this has been a depressing summer.

I truly loved this man. I also enjoyed teaching my students about him and they would often ask, "is he still alive?"

I told them to do their homework (research him) to find out. It'll be sad this year. :(

Cronkite was always on my family's TV. He was my connection to reality concerning all the tragic assassinations of the '60s, Vietnam, and for something positive, the Apollo 11 Lunar landing. I don't know why my father preferred CBS and Cronkite, but I always trusted him implicitly. Cronkite was almost like a surrogate father to a young boy whose pop often came home from work after the news was over. All I can say is watch these clips. First, the JFK one. Cronkite is famous for his professional measured rhythm and cadence, and he was also famous for his use of his glasses. Well, if you really want to understand history and human nature, watch how Cronkite almost completely loses it near the end since his rhythm and cadence disappears as he basically collapses into tears (albeit subtly). Next, check out how Cronkite predicts omniscently how the end of the Vietnam War will occur years before the actual ending. Lastly, you should all watch that cartoon I watched when Apollo 11 made its lunar landing. I loved the concept of space travel as a 13-year-old, and if any of you are silly enough to believe that it was faked, I'll tell you now that you are a "silly person". Cronkite is interesting all the way through. The different voices are Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin in the Eagle, often talking about going just about as slow as somebody walking since they were afraid they'd crashland, the NASA guys responding, and Cronkite and astronaut Wally Schirra.

great job, mark.

He gets me every time I see him take off those glasses when he announced JFK's death. And you can hear the emotion in his throat ever so slightly. I've heard that report countless times and it still gets me.

I was complaining in another thread about journalism today and then one of our greatest dies. :(

I don't remember ever having the privilege of hearing one of his news reports firsthand... but I've seen a lot of his news clips and have always thought he was the best of the best... my parents, and grandparents all thought the world of him...

Rest in Peace Sir...
