What are the guidelines for a thread on trading or selling things between members? Is it an issue and frowned upon? Has anyone tried it? Would anyone be interested?

I've posted a thing or two in the shoutbox and tried to keep it mostly to "if you're interested PM me." Just outta respect (not hustling/bothering others). Anyways, I just point to my eBay auctions because of the security for both parties. Not saying I wouldn't sell to someone on here directly. They'd have to be a regular user/someone I trust, though.
Anyways, whatcha trying to pedal....uh, sell? ;)

It's not something that's ever been (at least to my knowledge) done on here. It's definitely uncharted territory, but John's got it right. Don't talk business with anyone you don't know, and I would avoid discussing business in public.

I have an idea that involves water in bottles. Any takers?

Well, interactions on here most likely taken up on ebay through paypal.
I'm just wondering, I've got nothing to sell. Curious to buy though, whatever is out there in this inter-web.

I've seen it done on another forum where I'm a member and it became a bit of a minefield (although the things being sold were higher-end electrical goods not, I suspect, DVDs) with huge disclaimers put up by mods that they weren't held responsible if private transactions went wrong.
What they eventually did was have a section devoted to buying and selling with posts advertising wares or asking for something specific. Any negotiations had to be done via PM and replies to threads were just general queries or indications that the items had been sold.
Paypal is a good idea because it gives an added buffer between bank accounts and you don't need to use eBay to avail of it, just set up a private transaction. ;)
I give away loads of stuff, usually DVDs or VHS tapes which I've replaced.
I'm cool with members doing this, so long as they understand that, like Taccy says, I really can't hold anyone responsible. I'd merely encourage people to restrict the trading to longtime members in good standing, which should be quite safe.
I've had ideas tossed around about a forum for such things, but that might imply some sort of oversight or endorsement that obviously can't really exist, and I don't think it'd be quite active enough to justify its existence. But I think it's a cool idea for members who know and trust each other to swap stuff out, and I know it's already happening now and then. So yeah, rock on if you want to post open trade or sale requests now and again.
