The Movie Forums Podcast - 6/12/09

Behold: the third Movie Forums Podcast! Don't miss this one: it includes an interview with our very own mark f! Big thanks for Mark for his time and insight.

If you must, you can use the emedded player on the left, or download it directly with the link below. I recommend downloading it, as the player can be a little tricky from time to time. Or better yet, you can subscribe with iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=306197266), or plug the podcast feed (http://feeds2.feedburner.com/movieforumspodcast) into your RSS reader. :)

The audio in the main segment may sound a little strange, as I had to manipulate it a bit to remove some background noise. Hopefully I'll find a better place to record soon.

Hope you guys dig it. :) As always, feedback of all types is welcome. And if anyone wants something mentioned, a question answered, or anything like that, feel free to email (http://www.movieforums.com/community/sendmessage.php?do=mailmember&u=1) or PM me (http://www.movieforums.com/community/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) and I'll see if I can incorporate it into the next podcast.

Mark's last name is French?

I'm so jealous.

I'm even jealous of myself... and no, I never considered changing it to Freedom.

Good stuff, looking forward to the next one. Gotta give Mark some rep for his participation here.

Yeah it was great I want to watch Jaws now. I also wish I was born earlier so I could've seen all these amazing movies on the big screen. :(

I want to add that I flubbed a few things in that podcast. When we discussed that scene where the Chief's chum hits the shark's head and it takes quite awhile for the Chief to say, "You're gonna need a bigger boat", that was because that was one of the two hugest screams in the entire flick. Scheider had to wait that long just so the audience could settle down and hear that killer line. (The other enormous scream was Ben Gardner's head popping out underwater after Hooper finds the tooth "the size of a shot glass".)

I also think I said Ben "Harper"'s boat the first time, although I said Ben Gardner the second time. I also kept calling the Orca a ship at the end instead of a boat. Feel free to ask questions or challenge my babblings if you wish.

One of my earliest memories is seeing Return of the Jedi in theaters. But I had just turned four so it's not the same. The re-releases in 1997 was great despite the changes Lucas made to the films, I was 18 at the time so I could appreciate it this time around instead of just being completely overwhelmed by the size of the screen and how loud it all was.

edit: Didn't even notice your "flubs" Mark.

Could a DVD really remove or screw with some shots or audio?

I'm not listening until my commute tomorrow. You've become my sometimes co-commuter C. :)

You gonna have more Mofo guests on the podcast Yoda?

TheUsualSuspect

On a side note: My only complaint is some of the musical cues go on for too long.

I think the Jaws music is overlong, especially since much of it isn't in the movie, but that can be fixed if desired. I still think that Chris did a great job.

Me too, he's good at talking. You know.

Almost certainly. :)

I assume you're thinking of the Jaws clip? If so, I think I agree. The other clips I've played were a bit shorter, and a little more inherently entertaining. Oh well. I'll try to go with something more upbeat and/or cut down next time. :) Thanks for the suggestion.

I think you both did a swell job! I learned a few things I didn't know about the movie and a plethora of things I didn't know about mark f. I like the idea of having a podcast that focuses on a particular user of the site since it really is the users who sort of set the atmosphere within the walls (of MoFo).

Nice job, both of yous!

Don't despair, man. Keep an eye out for opportunities to see old movies in theatres. I've managed to see Jaws twice in theatres now - once at the start of 2007, the second back in March this year. Definitely a worthwhile experience, and I do suggest keeping an eye out for upcoming showings. Check movie theatres, art galleries, anywhere that would have a big enough screen.

As for the podcast, I'll get to it when I have the chance.

Aye, that's the idea. Mark's an expert in film in general, but even if he wasn't, I think all of us are "experts" on our favorite films, and I love hearing people talk about movies they love.

There's a great moment in the podcast where Mark says "it just flows so smoothly," and he does it with this sort of inflection and his voice gets higher at the end, and he sounds genuinely enamored; a bit like a kid talking about his favorite toy. I like those moments. :)

Great work.

How do you get other people to talk on these podcasts, anyways? Do you like call the person or does the person get a microphone for their computer or something like that?

Very enjoyable indeed, it's always good to hear someone talk about something they love and have a genuine passion for (unless it's something really boring:D). Luckily Jaws isn't boring, it's bloody well entertaining. Good to put a voice to a face too, and Yoda asked some excellent questions.:)

The way it's set up currently, Chris calls you and records everything over the phone. I used to do another podcast where I had to talk on a microphone and record it all using Audacity. Chris's method is simpler but he's still experimenting so things might change when it's your turn on the Podcast.

If I did it, it'd have to be before the summer's over.

Pfft, I guess there are no calls to Canada.

Audacity.....such a simple yet effective program.

Okay, this is weird, Chris....

I downloaded the podcast (MP3) and then dumped it into my iTunes folder. When I then made sure to add that subfolder to my iTunes library, the 35-minute podcast is there (in my music library, not podcasts, which is okay) ... BUT ....

iTunes gave it this title info:

"Battle Without Honor or Humanity"
Kill Bill, Vol. 1

Errrr ... so what's up with that? I can change the info, obviously ... but why did it get tagged this way? Did everyone's downloads get tagged by iTunes this way?

Yoda
06-20-09, 04:07 PM
This keeps happening; that's the title of the music I use for part of the opening, and it seems to keep re-setting everything I do this. I suppose I forgot to re-label part of it.

That said, it'd be way easier to just subscribe with the iTunes link (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=306197266). It'll check for new podcasts automatically and do all the legwork for you.

Austruck, you must be so proud. :)

There really isn't an appropriate place here at Mofo to say it so i'll just say it here... you raised a hell of a kid.

*probably seems random but I just listened to the podcast again myself and I was proud of him :)

Austruck
06-20-09, 04:20 PM
You should have seen him on TV when he was covering the election ... or on the radio cohosting a show about economics with a millionaire....

I can only take part of the credit, but I'll take that part. :)

He was in "school" for only one year (5th grade) and then he asked to be homeschooled again, so we took him out of school. After a few weeks into the new school year, the school principal called me and asked us to put Chris back in ... because he had singlehandedly upped their academic stats in several ways, including the district-wide spelling bee. :)

Thanks, Shemp. :) This is actually going to come back; the echo in my apartment was horrendous though and I had to manipulate the living daylights out of the resulting audio to get rid of it. I've just moved into a new place with fairly lower ceilings so I'm going to give it another go pretty soon.

I'm about to give them a listen. :)

Just finishing listening to the Destroy All Movies podcast.

and putting it on now.... *bobbing head to music*

oh I've missed this thread. Just listened to the last one with Chris and Mark. Grand stuff! Lovely to hear you both for real. Chris you sound so professional and Mark so enthusiastic - I love it when people get so animated about films, you guys are great! Hope to hear more soon.

I love everybody who has shared comments, but I really like it when you get specific and ask questions or something similar.
