Capra for sure.

Capra most definitely. I haven't seen enough from Miyazaki to give him my vote. Miyazaki fans, what of his should I watch? (I've seen Spirited Away which I really liked and Princess Mononoke which I didn't like as much).

To the best of my knowledge I've never seen anything by either of them.

[edit] Correction, I've seen Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

I haven't seen anything by Capra , but I sincerely doubt I could ever say he's better than Miyazaki. He puts so much time into his films , even animating parts himself.

Hey meaty, you need to get all over Capra. Any and everything he made from 1933 to 1948 is recommended, but especially It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life for starters.

I'd throw You Can't Take It With You and Arsenic And Old Lace in there as well. After those, you should check out some of his other movies like Meet John Doe or Mr. Deeds Goes To Town.

As I said above, I'd watch all of them (even the ones pre-1933 and post-1948), so you need to do so to, young man... (I realize that you're off to a good start.)

What meaty said but I'd throw Howl's Moving Castle in there

Its a choice between a guy who has directed some of the funniest and greatest movies of all time? And some dude who directs cartoons? And its tied? Really? Jesus...

Not anymore.

0.0 he doesn't just direct cartoons! I'm so offended they're much more than cartoons!

Powdered Water

You're so offended? Sorry. So am I.

I do kind of get what you're trying to say but they are and always will be cartoons. Doesn't mean they aren't good... not saying that.

Yeah Capra's winning!

So because they are animated they are lesser films?

I've been wanting to see It's A Wonderful Life for ages now, but never seem to get the opportunity. Apparently (it was on the news once) some people love it so much they watch it every day. On the strength of that alone I've decided to vote for Capra over the nothing more than a kiddies cartoon bloke;)

I watch It's a Wonderful Life, every Christmas. Great movie.

I would rather have not nominated Miyasaki at all than have to feel the pain of reading all the posts bashing his 'cartoons' that have way more heart than most movies these days

And to make you all feel better i watched Arsenic and Old Lace just for this thread but i still love Miyasaki more

I, for one, will never badmouth a director of animation. I believe their job is certainly as legit as any other director's. I also have liked every Miyazaki I've seen. It's just that I loved Capra long before I even knew who Miyazaki was, and Capra is certainly as universal as Miyazaki is, even if you don't realize how personal he is. (Capra adapted Arsenic and Old Lace, a stageplay, in 1942, with the stipulation that it wouldn't be released until 1944, long after the play had become ultra-popular, so it doesn't quite qualify as a full-fledged Capra flick, no matter how fun it is.) For those who don't realize it, Capra volunteered during WWII and made a series of stunning war documentaries, which even if some will call them propaganda, proved that Capra cared more about his country than his career.

I'm the opposite Mark, i've loved every Capra i've seen, granted it was only Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (which i really loved a lot) and Arsenic and Old Lace but i grew up watching My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke and yeah i looove Miyasaki's movies since childhood which definitely influenced my vote...

Is this a contest for who made more favorite films or who has more talent in directing a motion picture ?

rice1245
05-20-09, 11:44 PM
well the other one was favorite characters so i'm assuming this one is favorite directors

Ack, just pick the director you want to see advance to the next round, this isn't rocket surgery or anything.

Powdered Water

What's, "rocket surgery"? :D

Iroquois

I was torn. I've seen about three films by each director, and while Miyazaki's films trump Capra's in terms of visual flair and interesting narrative, I've quite simply found Capra's more enjoyable to watch.

Harry Lime

It's new, look it up.

Iroquois

If rockets need surgery now, does that mean they're alive?

Don't make 'em angry, whatever you do.

Winner: Frank Capra.
