MEAT'S 100 FAVORITES : 2ND LIST

What do I want to achieve with this list ?

My last (current ?) list in no way represents my current taste in film , I think about 50-60 movies have changed from the old list and many of them from the old list seem dumb to me now.

Either way , my intentions are to recommend all 100 of these movies to you and give you a better idea of what to recommend to me. :)

On what criteria do these films enter the list ?

This is not a list of the biggest achievements in film making history (although many of them are in fact huge achievements) , they are the 100 movies I enjoy the most.

I constantly have held off making this new list until I found 100 movies I deeply enjoy - the lowest score I would give to any given film here would be a 4. I admit it's obviously not a perfect list yet (which would be 100 5 movies) - but it is indeed a great representation of what I like film wise.

So let's get this started ...

Wait a tick! I thought you already made an updated list with your thread entitled: Best of the Best Top 100 Films. I was so happy to see 2001 on that list, now you're telling me it's just not true. It can't be considered your old list because it was just finished, and I've seen your old list before - it's the one with no names for all the little red x's.

I've seen your old list before - it's the one with no names for all the little red x's.

I won't make that mistake again ! Names for all the red x's !

100.Toy Story

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:lW3JyrHlzHkgOM:http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/toy_story_ver1.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:3GJJVQIdERGHOM:http://www.waynescomics.com/images/Cards/T/toy%2520story.jpg

If all your toys get up and talk to each other and no-ones around to see it does it really happen ?

Even if I may never have the need to watch this movie because it's practically word-for-word embedded into my brain after hundreds of viewings , it wouldn't feel right to not include the movie that inspired me to watch films in the first place.

This was one of the very few movies I grew up with and I still applaud it for it's original premise and extremely natural , fluent voice acting performances.

"I've set my laser from stun to kill"

Even if it's 3D animation looks extremely dated when compared to Pixar's latest , it's clever ideas often make up for the lack of advanced lighting and meticulously detailed characters seen in their newer movies.

Imaginative story with a great cast of character actors.

Nice start Meat, I'll distribute some rep throughout and as a result indicate the films I appreciate seeing on a top 100 list.

99. Army of Darkness

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:LtcOVYR-jbwoQM:http://chasness.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/army_of_darkness.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:ib-EkaJkZZvL0M:http://members.aye.net/~gharris/blog/army15.jpg

Sam Raimi's over the top comic book successor to two of the most annoying films I've seen. Even though I absolutely hate Evil Dead and don't particularly enjoy the second one - they aren't anywhere near similar to the third.

Bruce Campbell now plays the fully realized Ash , a complete jerk ass who wields a shotgun and a chainsaw. The same hyperactive camera work from the second one , continues to make a lot out of nothing - allowing a minimal special effects budget to still look great. How awesome is it when he picks up the skeleton and breaks him over his knee ?

Very funny action/horror/fantasy flick with a very unique visual style.

98. The 40 Year Old Virgin

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:x5YhnGIP4ktnTM:http://posterwire.com/wp-content/images/40-year-old_virgin.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:Pqu5vGfJjO9tMM:http://blog.nj.com/hobokennow_impact/2007/11/2322_D008_00231.JPG

Apatow set the tone for a wave of lewd comedies with heart and launched Seth Rogen , Paul Rudd , and Carrel into the spotlight with this one. It sets foot on dumb comedy territory from time to time , but luckily you have the right guys playing the right characters in these situations making them much less dumb.

Spot on casting , such a wide array of completly insane characters - I can't help it but laugh every time I see them. The more downplayed jokes are play my main attraction though , like Michael McDonald constantly playing in the store or the complete disreguard for any reality to how video games are played (N64 controllers used on the xbox).

"Because when I remove the blade I keep in my boot from it's sheathe it can not return until it has spilt blood"

97. Robocop

Frame by frame animated robot aside , this movie's look and sound is a much more integral part of the experience. Clear , crisp action scenes set to an exciting score - a simple premise done right.

96. Doubt
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:v0_sW-oNGGWgfM:http://www.cinematical.com/media/2008/08/doubtteaseredit.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:aZQ1L0LECuwVkM:http://cache.boston.com/resize/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2008/12/10/1228957726_4872/539w.jpg

Strong actors at work , an elegantly paced mystery that explores well it's various themes. It's especially well pieced together allowing you to arrive at a different conclusion upon each viewing.

95.Thank You For Smoking

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:LG197Obhbh7YfM:http://a44paco.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/thank_you_for_smoking.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:S1tCLOlxL2LOZM:http://www.reelingreviews.com/thankyouforsmokingpic.jpg

A touching drama about a father striving to teach his son what's right , while tackling his own thin morals - also a hilarious satire on the marketing of cigarettes. Handles divorce and what it's like to be a child of one in a very realistic manner.

94. Takeshis

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:rUxn9Q6nJQDgHM:http://dreamers.com/indices/imagenes/peliculas.6780.IMAGEN1.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:jnJnFgQGERv9eM:http://www.filmpressplus.com/surprise/TAKESHIS%27-Image2.jpg

Kitano's surreal , personal deconstruction and reassembly of his own films and his own life makes for great entertainment. A hilarious parody of his own relationships with his fellow actors and production crew - as well the relationships he has with the yakuza in his every day life. Eventually it all unwinds into chaotic violence and complete insanity - so it's right up my alley.

93. Pom Poko

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:pTwjhBI2f13q0M:http://www.totoroclub.net/movies/img/Pom%2520Poko.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:N5OkwT-iy0dmtM:http://www.absoluteanime.com/pom_poko/index5.jpg

Yep , this is my raccoon pick - everyone has one right ? Wonderfully animated flick about the balance of life - it doesn't try to hit you with obvious messages and instead lets you draw your own conclusions by showing you the story from balanced eyes.

http://org.ntnu.no/anime/img/serie/upload/20071210023852_11_2_pom_poko.jpg

92.Star Wars Episode 1 : The Phantom Menace

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:Eent_GO4I9a9eM:http://thetimetube.com/wp-content/uploads/Pictures/Top%252020%2520Movies/star_wars_episode1.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:jMgfvDaUZhbC9M:http://lancemannion.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/qui_gon_jinn_02.jpg

The Star Wars universe runs so deep with many planets , creatures , and stories - so many great ideas are explored with the blessing of amazing CGI animation. Huge exciting action scenes and beautiful computer generated scenery make this my third favorite Star Wars flick.

It introduces a ton of new characters while giving you a whole new perspective on the original ones. Very amusing seeing C3P0 (still voiced by Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 back in their young years.

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/ktshep/podracer.jpg

It may not pack as much acting talent as the original trilogy , but Liam Neeson sets a great example for everyone in the movie that they are in fact in a galaxy far far away.

91.Rear Window

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:aygokkZmYQll1M:http://rearwindow-vilendrer.com/Images/Rear%2520window%2520poster.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:3zCeBO3-sCId6M:http://img5.allocine.fr/acmedia/medias/00/18/98/001898_ph2.jpg

This one allows you to see a murder unfold from a birds eye perspective , among many other things. Amazing set design allow everything to unfold from behind the view of a window - although how interesting would it be without the key players (James Stewart and Grace Kelly) on the top of their game ?

90.12 Angry Men

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:whBc5-dNlKjsEM:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/91/12_angry_men.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:U3kyv7wk0V4NvM:http://www.jungle.lt/Movie%2520posters/12-angry-men.jpg

Here's another one that takes place in primarily one room , strong acting performances all around make for a highly entertaining murder mystery solved right in he midst of a jury decision.

89.Chinatown

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:11w7vhVgQxi7mM:http://www.orcutt.net/images/Chinatown.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:-g9kZdhIqL7vnM:http://parallax-view.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/chinatown-nicholsonanddunway.jpg

There's something about this movie I don't like , yet I keep coming back to it time after time - it's definitely grown on me. What I do like though is Jack Nicholson's great performance , busted nose and all.

Just so you know, you have two #97s.

Also, I must seek out Takeshis - haven't seen a Kitano film in yonks.

88. Rain Man

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:Wi9YPZa1-I5tKM:http://www.impawards.com/1988/posters/rain_man.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:sAz5cq75fSibrM:http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/071106/rainmna_l.jpg

Very blunt story of a relationship between long lost brothers , two very convincing performances from Cruise and Hoffman make this one worth watching again and again.

87. Superbad

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:X2-BbU0aDz6dJM:http://www.planetblacksburg.com/images/entertainment/superbad-bigposter.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:VTyNQpI6kAXbQM:http://www.ugo.com/movies/salute-to-losing-virginity/images/entries/Superbad.jpg

One of the rare recent comedies that holds up after multiple viewings , assuming you are able to connect with the goofy main characters you should have a blast. There's so much more effort and time put into this that you won't see with many other comedies (especially teen comedies) - it's well shot , has numerous details about the characters , and continually uses enjoyable and fitting music.

Oh yeah and end credits

"Take the vest off , you look like Aladdin"

86. Dial M for Murder

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:Zk3sffpnpWTUMM:http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews5/dialmformurder/ttile.JPG http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:ZGwo_M0zcPbwVM:http://www.cinematographers.nl/GreatDoPh/Films/DialMForMurder2.jpg

Another murder mystery from Hitchcock that has held up especially well , again it offers another perspective of the murder - this time by letting you know exactly how it will happen.

85. Fight Club

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:-FSivtkMV4jVbM:http://www.ugo.com/a/top11-screen-gems/images/fight-club3.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ibqfnGNkBx1zXM:http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%2520of%2520Month/fight%2520club.jpg

The movie everyone loves to hate on this forums , yeah it's every young male film casual's favorite - but only for a reason. Edward Nortan and Brad Pitt's performances bend and stretch from being preachers to buddies to something else. Filmed with master precision , it's got a very dark and grimy feel just from the visual style - let alone the themes of anarchism , nihilism.

http://i44.tinypic.com/e188x5.jpg

84. After Hours

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:6pkxF-Tosm-MCM:http://www.impawards.com/1985/posters/after_hours_ver2.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:mkUqV4qikx-orM:http://vassifer.blogs.com/alexinnyc/images/2007/11/08/after_hours_pic_3.jpg

This poor guy can't get a break , when he follows up on a date with a mysterious woman - his night becomes a descent into the rabbit hole. Often hilarious and undeniably strange , it's completely different from what you've seen from Scorsese - except for the quality in which it's made.

83. The Hunt for the Red October

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:1kHGBcaPa9e8HM:http://1416andcounting.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/hunt_for_red_october_ver2.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:YTW7Q_KVMMcZJM:http://blogs.amctv.com/future-of-classic/images/bloghuntoctober_4.jpg

The perfect cold war thriller set primarily in the sea. Countless great actors here and crisp beautiful visuals. It lacks the blood and guts from McTiernan's Die Hard - but makes up for it with the historical tension between these two countries.

There is another Cold War film on my list too , with the completely opposite message - as this one shows the reluctance and wise judgment that never allowed the war to start.

82.City of God

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:RcyaoRf-U7aaJM:http://www.impawards.com/2003/posters/city_of_god.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:euFtDHeDvvjflM:http://filmjournal.net/danielstephens/files/2007/03/city-of-god2jpg.jpg

Gritty crime film set in a third world country. Even though it's all about how terrible life is in this area , it looks amazing. Thoroughly original film that also serves as a greatly accessible introduction to foreign film.

81.The Bridge on the River Kwai

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ZAPbsif157R-8M:http://www.cinemaretro.com/uploads/kwaispanish.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:UkrW1O2ptCjcHM:http://www.siteoffline.com/images/the_bridge_over_the_river_kwai.jpg

An amazing Alec Guinness performance guides this prisoner of war action/thriller with a noticeable lack of brutal violence. It forms a unique relationship between the prisoners and their captors - while working against itself with a closing in faction of soldiers set to destroy their comrades work.

I would love to see this one in the theater , with it's immensely huge shots.

80.Castle in the Sky

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:rSWSMJlwgSImRM:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/40/Castle_in_the_Sky_(Movie_Poster).jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:gJpFNojMCUVFJM:http://www.otakucity.org/IMG/cache-440x331/laputa_castle_in_the_sky001-710x533-440x331.jpg

Very unique tale about a lost floating island , with many likable characters along the way. Studio Ghibli rivals Pixar as the greatest working animators of all time - this movie is a great argument that Ghibli is winning the battle , giant landscapes that aren't just incredibly detailed from the start - but actually animated.

79.Big Trouble in Little China

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:hQ4OS5e2r0uyuM:http://markpickavance.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/big_trouble.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:mLUliVbsM8TZFM:http://christiandivine.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/bt1.jpg

Immensely enjoyable action movie that parodies Chinese culture while still taking it seriously. Even if you think it's all cheesy and goofy , the main character's right there with you as Kurt Russel ridicules everything that happens around him.

78.Iron Man

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:-EyM1yu-ud3n-M:http://jhota.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/iron-man-poster2-big.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:vfAxldLMbiIxiM:http://filmonic.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/hr_iron_man_armor.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:cBb3K_hvawwVXM:http://content.mydamnchannel.com/datastore/UserFiles/iron-man-downey-jr.jpg

Although it does step into cliché territory , the cast has such great chemistry I can easily overlook it's wrong doings. It really is the actor's superhero movie , but the few bits of Iron Man kicking butt are awesome.

77.Do the Right Thing

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:0BmDjcyThyQZIM:http://chismetime.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/do_the_right_thing.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:dSaQDfs8q5e0gM:http://blogs.indiewire.com/images/blogs/reverseshot/archives/images/DoTheRightThingSalPino.jpg

Spike Lee's definitive film , it's the only film I've seen that is kind of centered around racism - that doesn't actually incite it. Everyone will walk away with a different meaning from this one , but I'm sure most will agree it's an enjoyable film.

76.South Park : Bigger , Longer , and Uncut

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:BIS5bNVwk8L6WM:http://www.impawards.com/1999/posters/south_park_bigger_longer_and_uncut.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:0kxUS3Jv9lwDNM:http://www.mediacircus.net/southpark____4.jpg

I usually hate musicals , but this self aware parody of musicals and films in general is too much to pass on. The musical numbers almost all parodies of existing songs blend extremely well together and the minimal but effective flat character style of the show is fun to watch. So many tiny references to other movies as well , almost every other shot is a duplicate from another film.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2rhvk7t.jpg

"We accidentally replaced your heart with a baked potato. You have about three seconds to live"

75. Raiders of the Lost Ark

I would say the Indiana Jones films are among Spielberg's best and this one is a great introduction to the character and the cartoon sensibilities that run with the series. It looks amazing to this day , I mean these guys really knew how to make make a good looking movie - some of the best action sequences of all time.

74. Battle Royale

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:KO6aeiQX63p8-M:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/10/Battle_royale_pochette.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:iKFlx5yFtVDFsM:http://cinema-repose.com/wp-content/gallery/battle-royale/battleroyale01.jpg

Brutal and violent film that completely follows it's elimination premise , usually any film with this strong of an idea behind it will get muddled up and become something else - but this one just follows up on it's promise , becoming a sick reality television show. It's action scenes are shot in true anime form and it's surprising classical soundtrack works perfectly.

73. The Royal Tenenbaums

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:vGlqxgQJHkvN7M:http://www.kirkhamdotcom.org/images/blog/royaltenenbaums.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:RjPa4rphleGyUM:http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/050614/184015__royal_l.jpg

A perfect summary of Wes Anderson's work , moves stiffly and pays off with great musical moments or convincing acting in overwhelming situations. This is a perfect comedic cast and they're all in this one together.

72. Chasing Amy

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:2pLyAy4GmludzM:http://blogdolabi.com/picture/ChasingAmy1997.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:QlxS7cFdI2PzjM:http://www.scene-stealers.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/chasing-amy-1997-ben-affleck-joey-lauren-adams-pic-1.jpg

Before Kevin Smith jumped off the deep end into cartoony nonsense films , he gave us one last comedy gem with the story of two comic book artists , a gay black man , and a lesbian. I totally buy the story because of the chemistry between Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams , they both have instant screen presence and if you think their love story is too hokey or stupid - Banky's there to balance it out.

71. A Threevning with Kevin Smith

Even if his films have become terrible , he remains a great story teller.
Hilarious stories about working with Bruce Willis on Die Hard 4 and working on Clerks 2 - he doesn't get boring even though his session is about 4 hours long , I mean he really is a convincing story teller.

Maybe he should just tell you his entire film instead of actually creating it with actors and such.

70. Mulholland Drive

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:qF3ASASZRNIpXM:http://www.soundtrackcollector.com/images/movie/large/Mulholland_Drive.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:YYbZaoj70kvjXM:http://trickledown.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/mulholland-drive.jpg

It would be a stretch to call me a David Lynch fan , but his surrealistic style of horror and weirdness is at it's peak here. Unlike many of his films it also contains a certain amount of depth that ties it all together and makes some sense out of seemingly total chaos - it also contains a record amount of great individual scenes.

69. Southland Tales

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:bJ_M6pJD95PEpM:http://img.blogdecine.com/2007/09/southland%2520tales%2520cartel.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:sbwb4Gvab6mvLM:http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2007/11/14/southland_tales_402x267.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:4Py-nLDtaYuGBM:http://www.channel4.com/film/media/images/Channel4/film/S/southland_tales_xl_01--film-B.jpg

Another surreal chaotic film - except this time done in action movie standard. Apparently it frustrates those who want it all to make perfect sense , well it's not that kind of movie - there are numerous loose ends and an equal amount of awesome scenes. Not to mention the perfectly cast Dwayne Johnson (The Rock).

68. Lawrence of Arabia

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:ODo4dDWdS95_DM:http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/6/b70-3107 http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:XNqPqHGkoTwC6M:http://www.thefilmphile.com/images/blog/353/lawrence-of-arabia-18.jpg

True 4 hour epic visual spectacle of life in the desert and how war is fought in the vast open reaches of sand. Great acting performances and an amazing screenplay make no waste of the enormous scope the visuals have to offer.

The Coen's have a knack for creating comedies that are funny because of their characters and this is a shining example. Beautiful lush cinematography , genuinely funny actors , and a humorous play on mythological story telling make this one to come back to time and time again.

66. 12 Monkeys

Gilliam's time travel masterpiece , I've seen many films from this director and it's no secret he loves to make them surrealistic and maddening - but his style really fits into context here and delivers on a much more emotional level than any of his other work has to me. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt really shine in this , I would consider this their best performances yet.

The time travel movie for adults.

I seem to be on a streak here , another downward spiral into madness. Filled to the top with enourmous breathtaking action scenes and spot on powerhouse performances.

You could call it commentary on war , but it goes much deeper than that.

As far as I know this is a completely accurate representation of 70's suburban high school , tons of music and lovable characters.

Scorsese's huge ensemble is a great adaptation of Infernal Affairs. Wonderfully weaves tons of characters and betrayals , back stabbings together into a fully realized thought out crime epic - with unforgettable performances.

I'm not sure I've ever met someone who didn't like this one. Edgar Wright , Simon Pegg , and Nick Frost film debut is a glorious comedic homage to all zombie flicks.

Touching funny drama about living on the road as a band and a great exploration of criticism and rock culture. Frances McDormand is a blast in this one.

I don't particually like westerns and I can't stand Eastwood as a director , so this was probably one of the biggest suprises to me. I really enjoyed this one , an excellent cast plays out a meaningful story that constantly changes your views on it's characters.

57.Knocked Up

Great chemistry between actors and a much more mature realistic story make this the best comedy of it's sub-genre (the Apatow comedy) , a bold choice to cast his own family in this one and when it's all over you get an amazing end credits montage.

Smith tells some more stories about dumb dealings with infamous people , he couldn't make this stuff up if he tried (and he has tried - watch his movies).

53.The Shining

Isolated and incredibly tense - it never lets you settle down : it's unrelentlessly horrifying structure and uneasy family chemistry makes it believable.

52.Sunshine

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:_NleUtuYGpliiM:http://krishk.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/sunshine-poster-big.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:TmziCvvYDMFafM:http://www.highdefdiscnews.com/reviews/sunshine/image1full.jpg

The rare sci-fi flick that is fully engaging and widely imaginative , keeps you on your toes with it's fictitious technical situations. What really sells the whole concept are the strong performances that tell you right from the first 20 minutes - these people are sick of isolation and want to go back home.

51.The King of Kong : A Fistful of Quarters

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:pQ4kK_PygobxUM:http://thehealingtouch.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/url.jpeg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:h_fCnHJBVxZhPM:http://www.vanessasopinion.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/stevewiebe.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:GyLBfk-Z185DCM:http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2007/08/16/arts/17kong-600.jpg

This overly dramatic documentary gives you the best of both worlds , you get genuine real moments as well the glorified movie moments. A celebration of video games and game culture - easily my pick for best donkey kong flick.

http://i40.tinypic.com/10idlzb.jpg

The most evil and dark film I've seen - but for someone seeking a large variety of films , this one easily makes way into my favorites for it's sheer quality of film making. Top notch acting and cinematography.

49.Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:2JF3aTi8AjmUfM:http://www.weirdasianews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/ponyo.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:EcOZLXQvm25mrM:http://www.cinemaisdope.com/news/films/ponyo/ponyo.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:T0kEIcd9Qk7PWM:http://files.meetup.com/462952/ponyo3.jpg

How's that for variety ? The story is shallow but it's animation runs deep. Beautifully fluid and magnificently lit - this is one of the most visceral visual experiences I've been through. Director Miyazaki hand drew the water effects himself , which is quite amazing how he maintains complete control over the films look and does it so well. Arguably the best animation ever done on film to this day.

Text doesn't do this one much justice though ...

Tragic musical revenge tale , now that's an original premise. Aside from South Park this is the only musical I've ever enjoyed , but damn did I enjoy it. The songs are so full of emotion , Johnny Depp sings all his own songs with anger and a dark heart.

Aside from him you have Helena Carter and Alan Rickman - both great picks for the roles and newcomer Jamie Bower who gives a great debut performance. It's a very visually eccentric movie , gray and white people with red splashes of guts.

Spielberg's magical tale of life from other planets , it's the impossibly rare family film that doesn't shove dumb messages down your throat or run rampant with clichés. What it does offer is pure universal humanity.

46.Blade Runner : The Final Cut

The rare story of an unredeemable evil man , it's shown through his eyes though so you will sympathize with him through all his horrible wrong doings. There is a whole layer of this film not said with words , but with subtle acting queues and music - a unique film to be watched by all.

The ultimate war movie , a claustrophobic intense 210 minute ride in a tiny german submarine. You become so invested in the characters and the well being of their ship , you might forget this is a war movie at all - it's message dosen't hit you until the final scene : but that's when you realize how foolish it's been done in every other movie.

Wonderful casting for this noir set in the land of make believe - where everything has the polish of the press stamped right on it , beneath the surface as Devito tells you it's gritty and violent.

Beautiful scenic as well as character animation , this story of a pig humanoid mercenary pilot is as outlandish and fun as it gets.

*Note : This goes for all the animated films above as well , I highly recommend watching them in Japanese with English subtitles - I despise watching them with the annoying english dubs*

Takeshi's take on the old Japanese cinema hero , amazing sword fights with big cartoony blood gushing everywhere and a wise suspenseful story that unfolds in only a manner Kitano would unfold it.

The ultimate action movie , how many countless attempts have tried to mimic the authenticity of this movie - about a million and they've all failed. A perfect balance of characters , visual flair , and brutal action scenes. It absolutely feels like you are up in that huge Nakatomi skyscraper and Bruce Willis is getting worn down by the minute.

Michael Mann clashes Deniro and Pacino together playing a professional game of cops and robbers. Strong performances and masterful camera work make this a heist movie where the audience reaps the dough.

Each of PTA's films have a spot on my list and his debut deserves to stand right here. An amazing opening scene introduces you to how fragile and simple these characters are - a realistic tale of friendship in the city of bright lights and gambling.

Visually miraculous film with a universal appeal to all cultures and languages , it has a severe lack of dialogue and is all the better for it.

Thrilling film that dips into hundreds of different genres to give a balanced wildly entertaining stylized period piece and as suspected from the Coens colorful characters walk their skewed paths. I will never tire of them saying "What's the rumpus ?".

30.The Wrestler

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:p2TxQYpOtOVpjM:http://www.filmofilia.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/wrestler-poster.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:ULKmJPj1bmFhAM:http://www.scene-stealers.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/d_aronoksfy_-_the_wrestler_low_1.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:TfmXp_JAWoZzmM:http://streetknowledge.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/the-wrestler1.jpg

Most will take Raging Bull , but I'll take The Wrestler - Rourke knows his character like's he playing himself and the screenplay comes together to form a tragic , heartbreaking story of a man who gets enjoyment out of one thing - but a thing that has destroyed his body and will kill him.

29.No Country for Old Men

Heavily symbolic suspense thriller that works because of it's visual appeal and strong acting performances. This one gets better everytime I watch it. Please Coens continue to give us more films , we like em !

Top class film that absorbs you in it's values of what is right and wrong - which rules can be bent and which can't. Expertly done atmosphere. They're so civilized and respectful , you tend to forget they're gangsters.

It simply looks amazing , even when you bring your standards of what Pixar has done in the past - the lighting is brilliant and the food looks so good I get hungry watching. Looks aside , the heart of the story is about passion in your work and life.

Another film with a simple premise executed as planned , with his wife only having a few weeks to live - detective Nishi unfolds his plan to appreciate the last days of having his wife , leaving a trail of destruction behind him that will soon catch up.

I will give this my award for having the most clever title of all time.

Who knew Adam Sandler was an actor ? He gives one of the most surprisingly honest performances I've seen in this wonderfully strange and colorful romantic film. Oh yeah and it's really funny.

Yes it's been revisited with special effects and crisper picture (I don't mind) , but this film has still held up to this day as the major fantasy sci-fi flick of all time. Introducing inventive original characters and actors that take this strange universe seriously - it's not only entertainment , but a statement of how inventive films can be.

Along with Toy Story listed above , this was one of the few movies I grew up with and still love - so it's a very nostalgic experience for me.

A handfull of lovable flawed characters , some fine with their current posistion in life and some not. Done on a miniscule budget of less than $30,000 , it was giant risk on Smith's behalf to create it - but when your dedicated to creating such a funny and truthful film : you get better than great results.

Profoundly personal and energetic , Gondry's directorial follow up to Eternal Sunshine is another dream themed deeply affecting film. I've had a strange viewing history with this one as well - the first time I saw I was extremely tired and when it was over the movie made me excited to go to sleep.

The second time I watched it right as the girl starts to imitate a truck reversing beep sound , I suddenly heard a very loud beeping and I wasn't sure if it was part of the movie or outside. I looked out the window , yep there's a garbage truck right outside.

Paul Thomas Anderson's chance to say it all. An amazing cast , most of them give their best performances of their careers (Tom Cruise , John C. Reilly). This film is perfection , great scene after great scene - seamlessly woven together and eventually stack together for a powerful gripping drama , numerous wise lessons to be learned from this film.

Depressing , violent , and beautiful - the number one revenge flick of all time has the ability to expand it's scope numerous times and not feel out of place. Master framework makes this one of the best looking films as well.

I love it. Not intent on being anything close to the original , it uses the existing characters to go ahead and have a completely new adventure. Complete with a bitter , but hope filled ending - it's the blockbuster that introduced people to an age of amazing films with big budgets.

17.Seven Samurai

http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:tEwMIaEgoLW4-M:http://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/6/MPW-3125 http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:9qLFREwC3N6iOM:http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/aj6293/seven_samurai.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:EF16LfIpwr1b5M:http://www.gonemovies.com/www/Drama/Drama/SevenSamurai.jpg

Kurosawa's samurai epic tells a story full of very universal themes and lessons. It attaches you to it's samurai fighters as you learn why they act how they do. When it's all over , the samurai get exactly what they expected - it touches on almost every emotion , never sustaining a certain singular feel.

This expansive zombie film takes every possible creative thing about them and does it in uproariously fun way. Everything you've ever thought of doing in a mall , they are just really having fun with these zombies and as much fun as the movie is - it successfully delivers it's social commentary and varied definitions of alive and dead.

One of the few movies on this list I would feel comfortable watching with my family , heartwarming and funny - each character has their own problems to deal with and their bonding together to solve it seems unlikely. Very believable acting performances as well.

Tell you what Meat, epic respect. The turnaround from when you started out here is pretty crazy, can't imagine what your list will be like in a few years when you've seen even more flicks. Have to go through and rep these posts up when read them all. Bias of course for my mad love of #25

Every time I watch this I get sucked into the amount of facts and contemplate every suspect , it tells you all this information about the killer , all the clues and you start to get absorbed in it yourself. Really this works to understand the main characters obsession with the Zodiac as years and years start to pass - you realize it's all been time wasted.

Stunning cinematography and great musical choices , a very strong cast , and an impossibly hard idea to film done right - make this the very best of suspense thrillers : if you could even call it that.

Takeshi's yakuza masterwork throws aside every convention you would associate with a gangster film and tells a completely original story with colorful scenic visuals.

Kaufman's horror film wants to gain an infinitely large scope and say everything there is to be said , who knows if this is really how he feels or if he is indeed writing with the confines of fear. Either way this marvelously convoluted film is one of the most entertaining I've seen - it's also the most depressing and hopeless movie I've seen.

These amazing acting performances will get overlooked simply because of the huge amount of them , with Phillip Seymour Hoffman giving his strongest of all time.

I should also comment on the amazing production design to make such realistic environments come to life , they really had to think this out how they were going to put a warehouse inside of a warehouse inside of a warehouse.

11.The Dark Knight

It's not nearly as complex as the films listed above , it's a visual giant with iconic yet intricate characters battling it out across a city going mad. It's a simple but true evaluation of crime and what's sincerely right and wrong. The Dark Knight is also the absolute perfection of the action movie , by transcending into deep themes it not only entertains , but constantly keeps you thinking.

A booming awesome musical score sizes up everything you see and damn do you see a lot in this. Giant shots of skyscrapers being ripped apart and vast empty streets - I think visuals are important as anything in a movie , this one is right on the money.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xpYxCnaawEk/SVP-nPTL1kI/AAAAAAAAFPY/KwiwsE2sqKQ/s400/Best+Cinematography+2008+The+Dark+Knight+Warner+Bros..jpg

... and here's another with amazing visuals. Huge hand drawn landscapes and building interiors , with inventive characters , creatures running around. Quickly it draws you into it's fantasy world and serves as a true escape from your actual life.

Unlike The Dark Knight , this one makes you care about things that are completely unrelated to you - but it still feels authentic. From the musical score to the mysterious enjoyable pacing - I can't find a single problem with this one.

This is a good one to illustrate the very floppy standings of my top ten favorite films - it's impossible for me to lock in my 10 favorites , they change every day depending on how I feel.

"What we need here is a little solidarity !"

Each character here is assigned a color and each of them are their unique personality - I love the cast , I love the dialogue - I could quote this movie for hours. Brilliant usage of non-linear story telling and a surreal usage of music. Harvey Keitel is perfect as the veteran thief who's principles have fallen behind the times.

"It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men. And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women, and that dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!"

Any film seems small in comparison to this breath taking 12 hour epic trilogy , each film made on par of quality as each other. This is one of the largest collaborations of story telling , fictional universe , period situational acting , lighting , cinematography , visual effects , music , and the man charged with the monumental task of directing it. It's everything movies should strive to be , completely absorbing and emotionally effective.

5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:4mndZarYZVXxgM:http://roddysrockinreviews.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/eternalsunshinepubv.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:seQwzwNAK9KouM:http://touchingtheelephant.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/2004_eternal_sunshine_of_the_spotless_mind_005.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:Pn6pr74-tgCe7M:http://www.tcnj.edu/~rasmuss4/eternal%2520sunshine.jpg

Beautifully written and directed film within a dream , it's genius mixture of reality and impossibility makes for one of the most interesting - emotionally gripping movies that has ever resonated with me.

4. Hot Fuzz

http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:NxYCMzXb2TXYyM:http://www.celebritywonder.com/wp/Nick_Frost_in_Hot_Fuzz_Wallpaper_3_800.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:nEs3bPiPO3tp0M:http://www.sbbfc.co.uk/images/hot-fuzz-insert-caption-433.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:SSUNKWXB9kHWjM:http://commentarytrack.files.wordpress.com/2007/07/hot-fuzz-073107.jpg

This one never gets old , tells a unique and unexpected story of a top class big city cop trying to adjust to life in the quiet country. Even though there isn't even any shooting for the majority of the film it's shot in a hyper-exciting fashion and brings the thrills as well it does the laughs.

Coming towards the end of the show , you get the gigantic 30 minute epic action shootout extravaganza - perfectly in sync with the over the top techno orchestra soundtrack.

"Ever fired your gun in the air and yelled, 'Aaaaaaah?"

3. Kikujiro

http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:qmr1Bk1PMrIhkM:http://www.nipponcinema.com/images/releases/kikujiro_sony_pictures.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:lQxyM2dMUHfRBM:http://www.ohbara.com/uploaded_images/kikujiro2-720811.jpg http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:1qcn-eaEt2ChuM:http://bp1.blogger.com/_4hO-jYh7Rj0/R3SXtOWnLKI/AAAAAAAAAKE/8erClDgHQO4/s320/kikujiro2jpg.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:AVAprnKIKSVyUM:http://citypaper.net/articles/062200/pics/big/kikujiro.jpg

Possibly the most unexpected film from the director of such bleak films as Sonatine , Fireworks - this is one of the happiest , funniest , most enjoyable films I've yet to see. Kitano's beautiful visual style works great here with the recurring theme of a scrapbook throughout. Critics didn't especially warm to this one , but it has really connected with me - one of the best of all time in my book.

"You're a farmer, huh?"

"No, no. I'm a banker."

"You're kidding. With a face like that?"

2. Goodfellas

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:vezrTkh59YDqWM:http://artfiles.art.com/images/-/Goodfellas-Poster-C10292193.jpeg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:f6b6KVwbMvzqaM:http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3158/2991148768_08d570fa1e.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:2_cK0GKEN2-FzM:http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/tuesdayweld/goodfellas.jpg

I don't need to tell you how good this one is , extremely realistic atmosphere - the cast loves each other like family , it doesn't only tell you how gangsters live their life - but how almost everyone does. Scorsese's wild , fast style really works here as it continually churns out two and half hours of movie gold.

It really feels like a unique group effort , I mean you got DeNiro and Pesci talking to Scorsese's mom it feels like something right out of my very own life. I almost know these people , they do bad things - but they aren't exactly bad people , or maybe they are ... great film.

1. The Big Lebowski

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:WdCrgNs43LH02M:http://gonet.cz/~tri65dnigalerie/porad_booklet/600/7/79f5238406c4ca64cf63b5a60df361e6.jpg http://tbn2.google.com/images?q=tbn:RkD2_PHm3X2dJM:http://cinema.cornell.edu/EarlyFall07/images/BigLebowski-.jpg http://tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:sDt1iaa_546FgM:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/14/The.Big.Lebowski.1998.Screenshot.1.jpg

I live my life by the dude's rules , I have no job and pretty much all I do is sit on my lazy behind and watch movies and play games. Obviously as both me and the dude realize it's not going to last forever , eventually you got to get paid and there's where I separate my own life from the film.

Big Lebowski features one of the most enjoyable soundtracks put on film. What a lovable cast of characters , scene after scene of gut busting hilarity - it's one of the most inventive creative films I've seen. The occasional dream sequences are a welcome intermission to this crime mystery , taken about as seriously as the dude takes anything.

Walter and Lebowski continually keep messing things up , they care but they're lazy - it's a impractically wise and deep film that perfectly captures many of my own sensibilities. Serious things are happening , but you that dosen't mean you need to take them seriously.

"F**k it dude , let's go bowling"

Great job on the list Meat! I'm going to watch Sunshine soon, and try and get a hold of copies of Kikujiro and Sonatine based on your recommendations. I watched Fireworks a ways back, and while I thought it was decent, it didn't impress me enough to delve into the rest of Kitano's work. I think it's time I gave him another chance.

Love your #1 pick Meat. Good job.

HL, not that you'd care, but I'd recommend Sonatine. I haven't seen it for years and years, but I really liked it back then.

Now I'm kinda sketchy on that film, I wonder why.

The lame ass video store near my place didn't have either Kitano films, I'm going to have to go to a better source - the library. I did rent Sunshine though, going to watch it tonight. Plus I have a copy of Boiling Point that I've been putting off, maybe I'll watch that too. Gotta love these Friday nights when everyone you know is out drinking and you don't drink anymore.

Well, just to put you off that too, Boiling Point would've definately been in top 100 of mine 10 years ago. :D Not as good as The Killer, by far Woo's best film IMO, but a great film nonetheless.

You honestly can't compare John Woo to Takeshi Kitano, though. Both have vastly different styles - it's like trying to say Monty Python is better than Wes Anderson or something.

Anyway, back on topic, nice work Meatwad for eerily predicting at least half my future list.

Wow Meat, must admit I didn't think that this new and improved list would be all that, but it's pretty damn excellent!!! You've got a lot of my favourites high up on your list, and reminded me about some excellent films I have forgotten. Great to see the likes of Heat and The Dark Knight listed so high. I'm not too keen on your top 10, however. I really thought that Eternal Sunshine was seriously overrated. Never been a LOTR fan either, though i appreciate the care and ambition that Jackson went to. All in all, I reckon most the films lower on your list should have been higher. But it's still a great list. Your taste has improved, mate!:D

I think I +repped you on your whole list, very well done!

The only caveat I have is that I want to make sure you aren't taking this film as 'factual' in any way. This film was based on Robert Graysmith's book and has been proven to be largely inaccurate. In my mind, Graysmith ruined Arthur Leigh Allen's life. Despite police evidence to the contrary, Graysmith repeatedly pointed to Allen as the main suspect. One of the lead detectives took some DNA from Allen prior to his death and this evidence was used later to prove that Allen's DNA did not match the DNA left on the Zodiac letters.

Anyway, I've been studying this case for years and won't pollute your thread with it. Just wanted to make that one comment.

Wow...kudos Meat, for the undertaking and some great choices. I can't imagine how difficult that was to rank them. I agree with many of them, not necessarily in same order, but there are quite a few I've never seen...so you gave me some good viewing ideas. I have not seen Big Lebowski...but I plan to see it because it is so popular. LOTR trilogy is most awesome in my opinion.

The perfect cold war thriller set primarily in the sea. Countless great actors here and crisp beautiful visuals. It lacks the blood and guts from McTiernan's Die Hard - but makes up for it with the historical tension between these two countries.

There is another Cold War film on my list too , with the completely opposite message - as this one shows the reluctance and wise judgment that never allowed the war to start.

and the pacing is like so paced. ;)

Dredging up another old thread . . . .

Glad to see someone who appreciates the animation that comes out of Gihbli/Miyazaki. I saw at least 4-5 of their movies in your top 100 list.

Miyazaki has the monopoly on anime film IMO. Monumentally better than all the other anime work I've seen, and I'd like to believe I've seen a lot of it.

A very intriguing list there Meatwad. While some of the things I could take-or-leave, (and some of which I just don't like outright, I'm speaking of one in particular which is Chasing Amy, it is one of a small handful of movies I walked away from, I found it Chauvinistic and homophobic). But for the most part I was pleasantly surprised with the list, especially because I found myself nodding my head and agreeing with most of it. Though one other shocker was Kikujiro, could you go into further detail with that? I thought it was decent, but not much more than that, perhaps I need to see it again?
