View Full Version : Is Australia racist?

I have been wondering that.
Here in Australia, we let alot of migrants from forign countries in. When i mean forign, i don't mean America, UK etc.... I mean real forign countries like Somalia, India and China.
Pre 1950 in Australia, we didn't let any non-white people in. But around 1955 we started to become less racist and abolished all racist laws (ecept for laws against Aborigines).
Ever since then, Australia has looked at it self as being multi cultural.
That is furtherst from the truth. We in fact are still racist.
Australians have develped a theory that if you come from another country, you are welcome to stay here, unless you bring over your culture and your language/religion.
I'm seriouse, Muslim folk tried to build a Mosk (a Muslim church) but protesters stoped construction. Guess what? After this story broke out, there was no media out cry and people backed the racists!
We have this theory here in Australia, that is, "if you don't like it leave". In other words, all migrants have to right to express their views about Australia, because they can just go back to their country.
To me Australia seems racist. Sure there are nice people here and you will be welcomed if you come from a diffrent culture, but just make sure you don't bring you culture here and you will be fine.

In short, yes. The whole Cronulla Beach thing is a shining example in recent memory of just how bad Australian racism is.

I'm not going to touch on this here subject at all, no sir.
But just so you know, all countries other than your own are considered 'real foreign' countries to you.

I'm a white Australian and I barely tolerate the Australian way of life. Problem is, I don't really care enough to leave.

Not to be facetious, but do they really boot people for crimes in Australia?

As far as I know, Australia doesn't do corporal punishment anymore.

So long, then.
By the way, lots of people discuss things they really have no idea about.

Yeah. You only get that for using kangaroos as a form of transport.

 This thread is funny. Love the "real forign countries" comment. :rotfl:
I have chuckled at some of the comments but I have no idea of the culture in Oz so I really cannot comment ;)

Yeah, me neither. I always thought of Australians as the most benevolent and amicable of the anglophone nations for some reason. Apparently no nation is free of bigoted retards...*another bubble burst*

It's too early in the morning for me to make a comment about this... but in case anyone is wondering, Iro was not having a conversation with himself... one of the other members deleted all their posts...

I feel like I have go to in, republish them just so this thread makes sense. :D I've been to two ports in Australia, Darwin and Sydney. Since I'm white, I fit in, I didn't notice any racism while I was there, but we were only there for a few days.
Oh, for you Aussies...anyone else eaten at I'm Angus?

I don't have any problems in Australia. Yes I'm a Caucasian Australian, but the town in Victoria I grew up in has become a become a very multicultural town. The town celebrates the different cultures with all sorts of festivals etc. There is support for all kinds of religions. There is even a new Mosque for the Muslim community recently built. Its a community made up of Italians, Greeks, Israelis, Africans, oh the list could go on for a long time. My old high school recently had a festival celebrating over 55 nationalities represented at its school now. I no longer live there but my parents do and I visit regularly. I now live in Melbourne the states capital which is also very multicultural.
Yes I've heard people say racist comments in my life time, but for every 1 racist comment I've heard I've heard 100 comments about someone being a freak because of there clothes or goth hair, or someone being homeless. There are people who are just less accepting than others. And usually the kind of racist comment I hear is someone making some stupid stereotype about about a nationality being bad drivers, not out right hatred.
I don't think Australia is a racist country, not from my point of view anyway. I'm not denying that people with racist view points don't exist here, but I think the country as a whole is not racist at all.
I'm proud of our country, I think Australia is a very lucky country and I love the multicultural people and communities. I love Melbourne and its mixed pot of people. It makes it the wonderful place it is. If it wasn't, I would not have the wonderful mix of friends that I have. They are different ages, genders, nationalities, sizes, religions, and sexual orientations and I love them all.
There we go. I've said my peace.
