Hey MoFos.

Some of you might remember me talking about upgrading to the latest forum software when the next stable release came out. Well, vBulletin 3.8 Gold will be released this Thursday, January 8th.

As it so happens, I have some work-related things to do Thursday night, so the upgrade will likely take place sometime between Friday and Tuesday, depending on a variety of factors. Mainly, I'll be waiting for the free time necessary to debug a few things post-upgrade, and I'll be waiting for some diminished forum activity (IE: probably fairly late at night).

I'll update this thread when I have a better idea of when the upgrade might take place, though it's entirely possible I'll just up and do it if I have the time and the conditions are right.

Just wanted to let ya'll know.

Awesome mate look forward to see the upgrade.

Will anything change from this upgrade? Or does it just make it run faster and smoother?

I'm looking forward to the upgrade, Yoda.

Hey, TheDOMINATOR, I see Empire Records in your sig. A childhood friend of mine was involved with the music for that movie/soundtrack. Something like Music Producer or something.... I have to get out my CD and check, but I've always thought it cool that she worked on that movie's music. :)

Oops, sorry, O.T. there.

Yods, how long offline when it happens? Can you put up a placeholder announcement that we'd see at that point, if it's going to be a long time? Or won't that be necessary?

Austruck

But you'll...what??? :)

There will be a number of new features. I've also been working on a new forum home page, which I'll make public around (or at) the same time as the upgrade.

In addition to the new standard features, running the latest version will allow me to install some of the newer modifications available, as well, so expect plenty of new stuff in the weeks that follow the upgrade, too. :)

There'll be a message letting people know that we're upgrading the forum while it's happening.

Re: how long. The actual upgrade probably won't take more than 30 minutes or so (probably significantly less). But I'll probably have to spend a fair bit of time afterwards re-applying customizations I've made and making sure most of the new stuff works. That could be an hour or two, just to make sure most of the important stuff works.

It'll be ongoing, though; I fully expect to spend several days squashing smaller bugs.

That's pretty awesome, Austruck. I wish I knew someone who was involved in a theatrical film, but I don't. I have an uncle who guarded top-security government establishments at one point in his career, so that's something. :D

Are you still doing the upgrade tonoight?

Yoda
01-08-09, 07:11 PM
No -- wasn't ever planning to, though. I have some work-related stuff to do tonight, so it'll have to wait a bit. I might have a go at it tomorrow, but more likely it'll happen sometime over the weekend, or early next week.

Yep, but only if your first name is Martian. If that's the case, then you can just kiss all your things goodbye!

Pfft. Of course. ;) Unless something goes horribly wrong, yes, everything will be saved. We're not switching servers or anything -- just upgrading software.

Wow, I'm glad you swapped out Wild Wild West with Pluto Nash in that subtitle for the Box Office forum.

I kinda like Wild Wild West. Is there something wrong with me?

Oh, we've got older archived versions of the site than that...

But yeah, never ceases to freak me out. A lot's changed.

Yeah, I remember the days before the cool logos on top. Now THAT to me represents the biggest "change" -- because at that point onward the site looked, well, somehow, more professional.

Nope, I'd rather you update over the weekend when I'm not on the forums. So, wait till then. Thanks.

This site is one of the best looking and most professional sites I frequent. And it just gets better and better, too.

Yeah, that was a big jump forward. I got a great deal from the developer and he did an absolutely unbelievable job. I think we've had it for something like 5 years, and even after all this time I wouldn't dream of changing the basic look.

Here are a couple of older screenshots, before the current layout (click each for a larger view):

Quick update: the upgrade is complete. If you find any problems -- and I suspect you will for the next day or two -- please make note of them.

I'd go into more detail about various things right now, but it's ridiculously late here and I need some sleep. I'll be back tomorrow to few some things, polish a few others, and (hopefully) start introducing some of the new features.

The Rep gubbins is gone from the top right of my Profile page. This could well be deliberate but I thought I'd mention it. :)

EDIT - Top LEFT. I'm lost without my little gloves telling me which is which. :(

As well as Tacitus's comments above, I also have a load of old user comments in my profile that I'd previously deleted and now can't get rid of. On a more positive note though, the site is slightly faster.

I'm finding many of my posts now are duplicates, one right after the other. So far, all these posts have images, and they all show up with no rep, even if I know that they've been repped. For example, I just checked my photo taken at school. I have +11 rep for that photo, but each photo says "Even" where the rep is, but there are 11 consecutive photos now. Additionally, in My Profile, it says that it'll show me my latest rep, but instead that's no longer there, All I see in the Latest Rep area are recent comments.

The shout box monster ate my shout... :#

;)

Okay, we're back up.

I'm sure there'll be lots of scattered problems, but I need some sleep, so hang in there everonye, and I'll be back tomorrow. :)

Thank you O' Wise Sleepy One... :) I've already noticed a few cool features... like members locations and join dates... and the forum loads a lot faster than it did for me...

I'm feeling a lot of pressure here. Do I ask someone to be my friend? What if they say no? I'm not sure if I can handle rejection. I may go and set the building on fire. My friends list is empty though... Ah the agony!

Oh, and what's this tags feature that is above the quick reply now?

Powdered Water
01-11-09, 11:46 AM
OK, so this may be a small thing Chris but the Movie Club, Lists and Box Office areas have all lost most of their colors. They're accessible just very hard to read.

In the Newsletter archive it appears you have lost some Newsletters, I know you didn't do a bunch of them last year but I know you have put out one since September of 2007. They're all doubled up too so perhaps once the double up thing is solved the rest of them will reappear?

Edit: These may all be Firefox issues, I just switched over to IE and so far I can post shouts. I'll check to see if all those other things are working a well.

*Knocks on wood*

I'm not having any problems! I wanted to brag. :D

Oh, and I had been wishing for that IP deal. Plus, I'm happy to see the "Join date" back up.

Well, my comments are messed up too, but that's a small one. Maybe I should look at some of my older posts . . .

It's not just a Firefox issue.... I switched to IE and can post shouts but all the other glitches with rep and dupicate posts are there still...

Thanks Cait, I was just on my way in here to mention that the Movie club, Lists and Box Office are all wonky in IE as well. So yeah, not a Firefox issue.

Quick question: Where did your top 10 list and your 'Lists' go? It's been replaced by 'Join Date' and 'Location', so are we gonna get it back?

I'm sure we will, Yoda just did the upgrade last night and was up very late. He'll start putting all the little perks that makes MoFo, Mofo when he gets back on. Probably after he has copious amounts of coffee...

AAAHHH!! All my favorite top ten movies are gone!!! NNOOOOO!!!:(

What we have no thing for photos now either? I had some on here. I mean photos we uploaded on to the site and saved them. We can put them to private or not. :(

Well one good thing, only if I did it right is we have a friend requests now! :D

PW's right; everyone chill. :) Nothing is even remotely lost. Unfortunately I had to wait until it was pretty late to avoid disrupting too many users, which means I started a bit before 2:00 AM and finished around 6:00 AM. I'm making some coffee now and will plow through a lot of these problems today.

More updates will follow. :) But yeah, don't sweat it; 99% of this is completely temporary.
